View Full Version : What are your favorite photo spots in melbourne?
Kushantaiidan March 22nd, 2004, 09:27 AM For taking skyline shots, where do you go? Give us all your secrets! Heheh. I actually remember myself making a thread like this before. But I can't remember if I did or not. My memory is erratic.
Anyway, my favorite spots would be from the Shrine, and from the other side of Albert park lake, with the skyline reflected in the water.
Places I'd love to get to are on top of various buildings on St Kilda road, or from some kind of risen point north or north east of the city..
SOmething that I've found, is that in sydney, you can get great skyline from almost any angle, almost anywhere. But with melbourne, (which I beleive with great bias, is the nicer skyline), it's much trickier to find that perfect shot, getting the angle right. Possible due to the size of the CBD, the gap, the perspective of tall buildings from various angles can be misleading, and not enough waterfront! Yet!!
I'd just love to stop my car in the middle of Bolte Bridge, or even the Westgate, and take a few happy snaps.
So what are your fav spots?
Londoner March 22nd, 2004, 05:00 PM When I was last in Melbourne I took a ride out to Maribyrnong and climbed the hill to Highpoint Mall (I suspect that staying on the tram to the end might have saved the climb). You'd need a long telephoto you get a terrific view of the CBD and surroundings - probably best late afternoon with the sun behind.
falchoon April 29th, 2004, 11:11 AM One place I'd like to take a pic from is on the Western ring road just south of the Ballarat/Western Hwy overpass. I need to plan my camera and a flat tyre at the same time.
Icanseeformiles June 22nd, 2004, 10:05 AM Rukker's Hill High street Northcote.just up from the Westgarth Shops.
A few lucky people in some very cheap ugly flats have a simply stunning view with virtually every building visible.
Park you cark and click away.Evening shots are great here too.
Yardmaster June 24th, 2004, 03:42 PM Just walking down the Southbank of the Yarra to Yarra's Edge 5 gives some pretty good views.
Bronteboy June 28th, 2004, 02:03 PM Across Albert Park Lake from the Canterbury Rd side - the full sweeping panorama from the far end of St Kilda Rd to docklands available there, and a beautiful placid water foreground. In particular, there's a lawn rise above the little ampitheatre there which gives a wonderful early evening view of the city lights, with the lighting on 120 C and other talls on the eastern CBD hill looking just great - as good a skyline view as you could get anywhere, I think. Cheers Bronte
RoscoHead July 4th, 2004, 01:45 PM The two best places I've found for viewing the skyline are:
Behind the sports complex on Batesford road in Chadstone. There's a nice mound there that gives you a great view of the city skyline, over the top of the leafy inner eastern suburbs.
The park at Williamstown, just near the roundabout. Below is a pic I took from there.

A-brain July 5th, 2004, 06:56 AM That Willy angle is without doubt of the best angles that will benefit the most from the big Southbank expansion underway..
The other main benefactor will be Camberwell Hill and basically anything directly East ..
Not to mention St.Kilda Rd & directly south but E is almost going to have *too* great an impact - appearing so much taller than everything in the CBD due to perspective it will amost dimish the rest of the sklyine..
From the West/East views everything is beautifully balanced.. unfortunately one of *my* personal favourite views (definately favourite nightime view) from High St Northcote Hill isn't going to benefit much from Southbank..
DrDan July 6th, 2004, 10:12 AM my fav (if somewhat cliched) is at southbank looking back towards princes bridge and Fed Sq with the collins St towers in the background.

The view from Xavier College
Unless you’ve got a child going to this private boys’ school, chances are you haven’t set foot on the senior school campus grounds – unless you’re a local of Kew or nearby Hawthorn. Then you’d know that a position on the steps of the chapel on the hill is a great place from which to watch the sun set over the city skyline.
The New Year’s Eve numbers have been climbing in recent years. The attraction (especially for older couples and families with young children who are otherwise house-bound) is the sweeping view from an elevated position and the chance to see enough different fireworks displays across the city and suburbs to make your throat hoarse from all those “oohs” and “aahs”.
With this year barely off the starter’s blocks, though, it’s still worth a look just to see the sunset bleed its orange glow over the CBD. Stay until dark on the right night and the moon’s rise behind the chapel’s cross can also be quite spectacular. :)
Sounds like a great place for picture taking. :okay:
