Brizer October 18th, 2009, 01:04 AM Casablanca and Athens buildings are Art Deco. There were some variations within Art Deco and these show aspects of the 'Streamline' or 'Moderne' or 'Ocean Liner' variations of the style. There may be some influence from Functionalism/Modernism coming through but they are still Art Deco.
I wait for someone from Chicago, San Antonio, New York, Boston, etc., to post pics as I've seen some beauties there.
Also Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, but most importantly, Paris and London.
Art Deco did make a bit of a comeback during the 1980s during Post Modernism (PoMo) as one of the favoured influences of that revivalist/historicist moment in architectural history. It can't be reborn as a complete, cohesive style because the circumstances that created it have gone so it would be imitation, or to use a word much favoured in the '80s, 'pastiche', and it never quite works except as 'witty reference' or 'ironic comment'. For instance, see some of the works of Philip Johnson/John Burgee, Michael Graves and even works by Kohn Pedersen Fox in the US during that time. It also occurred in Japan, France, etc.
Those buildings behind the magnificent Chrysler Building in the New York shot, post 13, are also Art Deco but not quite so spectacular.

Well, Art Deco is a variation of modernism. "Modernism" as a term is pretty imprecise though.
I don't consider those posted buildings ornate enough to classify it as pure Art Deco. But well, then again this term is almost as imprecise as modernism, as there aren't rock-solid attributes all Art Deco buildings share.
So I give you that, someone may classify those as Art Deco structures,
I'd specify them as streamline modernist ones. In the end, architecture at that time was in a constant dynamic process so explicit classifications are hard to find.
I wait for someone from Chicago, San Antonio, New York, Boston, etc., to post pics as I've seen some beauties there.
Also Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, but most importantly, Paris and London.
Tel Aviv, Barcelona, German housing stocks, Hamburg, Shanghai (the Bund etc.), Buenos Aires, Philadelphia, ... There are so many places offering loads of great examples.
And damn, how could you possibly forget about Miami? ;)

TomTack October 27th, 2009, 08:40 PM The KBC Tower or Farmer's Tower (Boerentoren) as it is locally known is an Art Deco Skyscraper built between 1929 and 1932.
History
Boerentoren, Antwerp
In the run-up to the 1930 Antwerp World Exhibition, the first European skyscraper was built in the center of Antwerp. The tower, constructed at a site which was cleared by bombardments during the first world war, was to be a monumental building, but one of the requirements given by the city council was that the building should not compete with the city's cathedral. A special council consisting of prominent architects had to give the approval before the tower could be built. Today, the requirement for not obstructing the view on the cathedral still exists in Antwerp.
Europe's tallest
At the time construction was completed, the originally 87.5 meters high tower was the tallest in Western Europe.
Boerentoren, Antwerp
Boerentoren
The skyscraper was built after contemporary high-rise constructions in New York and Chicago. It was also one of the first buildings in Europe which made use of a load-carrying structural frame, also originating from Chicago. The tower has an Art Deco-style facade and contained several marvelous rooms with Art Deco decorations. Plans in the late sixties to destroy the tower were fortunately set aside and the building was restored between 1970 and 1976. After the restoration the tower reached a height of 97 meters.
Protected Monument
Originally the tower was built as a multifunctional building and consisted of offices as well as apartments. With the restoration, all the apartments were removed and the tower is now only used as an office building.
Also gone since the restoration in the 70s are the café on the roof terrace of the 10 stories high wings, a tearoom and a Beer hall. In 1981, the KBC tower became a protected monument.

The Boekentoren, (Dutch for Book Tower) is a famous building located in Ghent, Belgium, designed by the Belgian architect Henry Van de Velde. It is part of the Ghent University Library and currently houses 3 million books ry
Although the tower is only 64 metres high, it makes a huge impression as it is located on the highest point of the city called de Blandijnberg. Van de Velde designed it in 1933 to be the fourth tower of the city completing the famous three towers of the Middle Ages: the Saint-Nicolas Church, the Belfry and the Saint Bavo Cathedral. Together with these 3 towers, the so called "Tower of Wisdom" helped Ghent realising the dream the town had since it hosted the World's Fair in 1913 of creating a "Parade of Towers".
During the Second World War the tower was taken by the German army because of the great city view they had over there.
Currently fund is being raised for the necessary restoration.

MDguy November 2nd, 2009, 12:26 AM Great Thread! Its also my favorite style!
What exactly defines art-deco though?
TomTack November 3rd, 2009, 02:37 PM The Stoclet Palace (French: Palais Stoclet, Dutch: Stocletpaleis) is a private mansion built by architect Josef Hoffmann between 1905 and 1911 in Brussels (Belgium) for banker and art lover Adolphe Stoclet. Considered as Hoffman's masterpiece, the Stoclet's house is one of the most refined and luxurious private houses of the twentieth century
It was constructed on Brussels' Avenue de Tervueren, in the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, by the Wiener Werkstätte or Viennese Workshop. Although the marble-clad facade is radically simplified and looks forward to Modernism, it contains commissioned works by Gustav Klimt in the dining room, four copper figures at the top by sculptor Franz Metzner, and other craftwork inside and outside the building. This integration of architects, artists, and artisans makes it an example of Gesamtkunstwerk, one of the defining characteristics of Jugendstil.
The mansion is still occupied by the Stoclet family. It is therefore not open to visitors. The palace was designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO in June 2009.

Sadly, this architectural movement didn't catch on in Toronto in the same way it swept over American cities (even Montreal has a more impressive stock). Nonetheless, Toronto does boast a handful of stunning examples of this style:

gfd08 March 7th, 2010, 10:51 PM Montevideo is the Capital city from Uruguay. The special thing about our Art Deco buildings, is that we don't have huge Skyscrapers or towers, but thousands of homes built in this style. That's what makes our city a really valuable example of a Art Deco city :)

TomTack June 15th, 2010, 12:25 AM Villa Emain, Brussels, Belgium. (source: www.ilovebelgium.be)
The, just renovated, Villa Empain is certainly one of the most beautiful architectural masterpieces of Art Deco in Brussels. In 1930, at the age of 21, Baron Louis Empain had this private mansion of 2500 square meters built, on the prestigious Franklin Roosevelt Avenue. It is to the Swiss architect Michel Polak, that this splendid mansion is entrusted to. Michel Polak is already well known in Belgium: one of his major works consisted of the famous “Residence Palace” (1928) and the institute George Eastman in the Leopold Parc (the future Museum of Europe).
The project conceived on a property of 55 acres includes a monumental villa with four granite polished facades, a garden surrounding a decorated swimming pool of pergola and a caretaker’s lodge. The modern and luxurious character of this construction generated enthusiasm and curiosity. It is true that the diversity and the quality of the materials used (marble, polished granite, bronzes, wrought iron, glasses and precious woods), the refinement of the details and the coherence of the whole imposing simple lines has contributed from the start to its patrimonial value.
Great Art lover, Louis Empain donated the property to the Belgian State in 1937, with the intention of creating a museum of decorative and contemporary art. Unfortunately this project was not carried out till after few years under the direction of La Cambre School of Arts. In 1943, the German army requisitioned the villa and occupied it until the end of the war. Thereafter it sheltered the allied armies and as well as the embassy of the USSR and did not fulfill the functions for which it was offered to the Belgian State. Considering that the latter had not honored its engagement, Louis Empain recovered his property in the beginning of the sixties before reselling it in 1973.
Since the beginning of the years 1990, the building remained practically unoccupied and left in a state of minimal maintenance. Fortunately, its recent acquisition by the Boghossian Foundation makes it possible to consider its future in an optimistic way. Its approved classification by the Government of Brussels-Capital Region in March 2007 and its future assignment into a center of dialogue between the cultures of the East and the West guarantees indeed the revival of this splendid house.

lovecharlie June 24th, 2010, 03:45 PM Its a beautiful style, one of my favourites, here are some examples from around England.
Many of the Burtons stores in England have a similar Art Deco design, many featuring elephants and zig zag patterns, one/if not the best example is in my home town of Wolverhampton.

This Burtons store in London is an Art Deco/classical mix of styles and is another good example of the Burtons design.

This London Art Deco has a strong Egyptian influence.

London's Victoria Coach Station features set-backs and corner windows.

Even the BBC likes Art Deco this is their headquarters in London.

Many cinemas in England were built in the Art Deco style. The Odeon Cinema chain had Art Deco cinemas in most large cities across the country.

TomTack September 3rd, 2010, 03:12 PM The National Basilica of Koekelberg is a huge Art Deco church in Brussels, built to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Belgian independence.
In 1905 King Leopold II laid the first stone of the basilica. The construction was halted by the two World Wars and wasn't finished until 1971.
The basilica is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, like the more famous and equally patriotic Basilique Sacré-Coeur in Paris. The more common name "Basilica of Koekelberg" derives from its location in the Koekelberg area of Brussels.
The Art Deco church is 89m high and 167m long, making it the fifth-largest church in the world. The main dome of the bulky brick-faced structure is flanked by two towers. In summer you can climb to the dome for outstanding views of the city.

Philly Bud October 18th, 2010, 05:52 PM The main train station in central Philadelphia, 30th Street Station:

The glassy modern highrise building behind the station is the 30 story Cira Center, architect Cesar Pelli, built - I think - in 2004.

The statue is a memorial for the US soldiers - who were employed by the railroad - who died in World War II.

the spliff fairy October 19th, 2010, 10:09 PM more Shanghai
- its said there's more art deco here than anywhere else in the world, not just the grand buildings
but in thousands of smaller houses and tenement blocks. Basicallly the city was caught in aspic
between the 1930s and the 1990s - in effect anything that isnt a modern highrise tends to be
Chinese shikumen or art deco (and more often both).

Dudok. Famous for building the Hilversum Town Hall. In the late fifties the remains of the buidling were demolisched.

wow.
boychild August 12th, 2011, 03:50 PM The detailing on that United office building is stunning!
I would say that a lot of early 20th century architectural and decorative styles merge and borrow from each other quite a bit which can be confusing, hence why there is quite a bit of art nouveau, beaux arts (maybe the most similar to deco?)and even quite modern, functionalist and even a couple of neo gothic buildings on this thread and why a lot of people find it hard to pin down.
There are some good examples in my home city of Liverpool that I will try to post on here now

"Art Deco Symbols and Motifs:
Natural motifs include stylized flowers and garlands, banana leaves, stylized water fountains, feathers, doves, deer or antelopes, elephants, greyhounds, exotic animals, human figures, sun rays and sunbursts. Geometric motifs that are machine-inspired include circles, spirals, squares, rectangles, diamond shapes, chevrons, lightning bolts, parallel lines, and striped bands. Female figures appear as spotlights in wall murals and decorative arts objects. Other exotic motifs derive from the Ballet Russes, Egypt, African art, and Oriental influences."

You got to be joking, this is cinema Urania, one of the best examples of art noveau buildings in Osijek, and one of the best examples in Croatia!Built in 1912 by Viktor Axmann,I know the whole history of this building and its not art deco!
This building that i posted was mentioned as a art deco building in few book that people from museum of Slavonia and Baranja wrote.
De Klauw November 10th, 2011, 04:13 AM ^^Your right about cinema Urania (although it bears some similarities of Art Deco, at this site (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/ce551/) eg it is coined as an 'Art deco style buliding') but the example you gave is definitely not art deco. Look at the buildings given in this threat. They are completely different.
Rocky031 November 10th, 2011, 02:34 PM That becouse its a different type of art deco, its much diferent then in US,UK,France.....

Brethren's Cemetery from late 1920ies - enormous complex. Architecture is more from Functionalism but sculptures - Art Deco.

Since Riga has always been under rather strong German influence, perhaps we could say it's part of the Reformstil (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformstil).
It's one of the earliest styles doing mostly without ornamentation.
Another example would be the entrance building of the old Elbe tunnel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbe_Tunnel_(1911)) in Hamburg, Germany (1911):

Well, did not know this style! But - this factory is designed by German architect Peter Behrens - thus it might be Reformstil!

Rocky031 January 21st, 2012, 01:21 AM I like art deco,it has some awasome examples but still, art nouveau iz much better :D
tommolo January 21st, 2012, 03:11 AM it's just the name different between art deco and art nouveau ;)
Brizer January 21st, 2012, 03:17 AM They are different styles.
Art Nouveau is late C.19th-early C.20th (pre-WWI).
Art Deco is 1920s-30s (post-WWI or Interwar).
Art Nouveau in Italy is known as Arte Floriale. In Germany it's known as Jugenstil. Some places - Austria? - it's known as Secessionist. (My spelling may be a bit incorrect.)
In lettering or calligraphy, a font style in Word, etc., that is similar to Art Nouveau is 'Vivaldi' while 'Broadway' is Art Deco.
tommolo January 21st, 2012, 04:55 AM my oh my! I never knew this distinction, thank you very much. We in Italy calls Art Nouveau also Stile Liberty, overall in cities like Milan, Turin and Palermo ;) thaks for the info!
Brizer January 21st, 2012, 05:42 AM Sě, č vero, I forgot that. Also I now remember it's 'arte floreale' or 'stile floreale' as well as 'stilo Liberty'.
Credo que the 'Liberty' comes from the American design firm, "Liberty", which was famous at that time and is famous for its floral designs very influenced by European Art Nouveau in interior design, fabrics, furniture and household items.
Rocky031 January 21st, 2012, 05:17 PM it's just the name different between art deco and art nouveau ;)

^^ Love this ^_^.
@b1 January 25th, 2012, 03:27 PM In my opinion, some art deco buildings are inspired from ancient building, whereas American art deco inspired from ancient Aztec or Mayan architecture and Europe from Ancient Egypt or Mesopotamian architecture such as pyramid, temple, or ziggurat. Also, Asian art deco inspired from many ancient or traditional buildings such as Angkor Vat in Cambodia or Ancient Javanese temple such as Prambanan or Borobudur in Indonesia. :)
