Best in the South.Show your pride in your favorite Southern city.List and show pics of your cities. NO MORE than 8 of the most stand out architectural structures. They can be skyscrapers,high-rises or can be public buildings such as museums, universities buildings etc...These structures should be something that architecturally stands out.Not something that is ordinary or found in the other cities.

Here are my favorites in Atlanta.
191 Peachtree and The Westin Tower

8 seems like a weird number, why not 5? as 10 would probably be too many.

the Westin in Atlanta definitely stands out, but Detroit has the Renaissance Center , so i wouldn't say that hotel is unique to Atlanta...
While the design isn't too ordinary, it is found in other cities, but whatever, to each his own.

I like Detroit's better, but only because how important it is to Detroit's skyline.

I always liked the Renaissance Center except for how it plays into the Detroit skyline. The rest of the skyline is more attractive from a distance.

Yes they are the same but a case could be made for an exception to the rule. They are "equally important" to each of their skylines. The Westin Atlanta was the first. It was built by famed Atlanta Architect John Portman(a Georgia Tech graduate) in 1976.John Potman revolutionized the hotel high rise industry and scored an immediate popular success with his innovative atrium hotel form. The Westin is the second-tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere at 73 stories. The building opened as the tallest hotel in the world; in 1977.It being the first ,its an Atlanta fixture in its skyline, makes it one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. The single silhouette makes it more distinguishable to Atlanta as Renaissance in Detroit is grouped together as a plaza of similar buildings collectively. In both cities you instantly recognize which one is in either city.
Largest Hotel in the U.S./rank in the world
12. Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center ... Detroit 221 m 727 ft 70 1977
13. Westin Peachtree Plaza ... Atlanta ... 220 m 723 ft ... 73 ... 1976
16. Four Seasons Hotel ... New York City ... 208 m 682 ft ... 52 ... 1993
26. Waldorf=Astoria ... New York City ... 191 m 625 ft ... 47 ... 1931

That said I prefer the one in Detroit as well.

I started to do just 5,but for me that would be too hard.10 like you said was too many.* still is too many ,but I originally wanted an even number of high-rises and other buidings or structures.

This is about the "Arc de Triomphe" style monument I posted about Atlanta earlier. It has been controversial. Particularly while it was being built.Considered by some that it would be too " kitschy".Since it has been completed, most people seem to like it.I told some of my friends from France when they came for a visit about it.At first they snickered and said something "smart"in French. However after I showed it to them in person, they thought it was very tasteful.

Millennium Gate
The Millennium Gate is the largest classical monument to be dedicated since the Jefferson Memorial. An eight-story triumphal arch overlooking a colonnaded lawn, the monument is flanked by two sculptures representing peace and justice.
Inside the arch is an American history museum. 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) of gallery space display a timeline of American history starting with the native Indian population to the Spanish exploration and ultimately British settlement. Twenty of America’s pioneer families are highlighted in individual cabinets to convey how the great philanthropic ideal of America’s 18th century founders has become a reality. Also included are the Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Hearst, Carnegie, and Roosevelt families, all of whom have Georgia connections. The Philanthropy Gallery will be the most novel room in the museum, housing a floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall screen that displays a series of 360-degree virtual images of historically important locations in Atlanta, Georgia. In this space, visitors will have the ability to virtually manipulate the landscape and unveil the contributions of great philanthropists. They will also be able to “remove” significant contributions with the wave of a hand over the screen. As an example, the visitor can request to see what Atlanta might have looked like had Robert Woodruff never lived. The Millennium Gate’s unique combination of traditional and virtual galleries has compelled both Mayor Shirley Franklin and Speaker Newt Gingrich to publicly name our museum the newest and most exciting teaching model today, and believe it will be imitated across the country

Hmmm my favorite 8 OKC-area buildings.

1. First National Tower (the one further right), was OKC's first 400+ ft tower. It is also OKC's largest office building with a million square feet inside it, currently all is being renovated (FNT is unfortunately 80% vacant).
http://www.okcreview.com/userfiles/image/FNC.jpg

2. The Memorial...just a very special place where you can really get a sense of some of what OKC has been through.
http://z.about.com/d/okc/1/7/8/1/MemorialBEF1.jpg

3. The incredibly beautiful Oklahoma State Capitol.
http://www.jempics.com/capitolhdr.jpg

4. The recently restored Hilton Skirvin Hotel in downtown, one of OKC's most important historic structures that the city chipped in to restore after decades of neglect.
http://www.okcago.org/picts/skirvin.jpghttp://www1.hilton.com/ts/en_US/hotels/content/OKCSKHF/media/images/OKCSKHF_The_Skirvin_Hilton_Oklahoma_City_home_left.jpg

5. The historic Gold Dome at NW 23rd and NW Classen Blvd is an important Route 66 gem that was also recently saved from neglect. It now hosts an Asian community center and a wide variety of unique restaurants and bars, as well as upscale condos in the adjoining tower.
http://16.media.tumblr.com/RSWRGxKntr2csmu3LdiuatuTo1_500.jpg

6. The old OKC Farmer's Public Market, which is currently just an antique market, is one of the most important historic buildings in the Central Oklahoma area. Before the 70s and urban renewal, it used to be a community gathering spot and a major economic marketplace.
http://www.oklahomafilm.org/photos/Oklahoma%20City-Urban/slides/Farmer%27s%20Market%20downtown%20OKC%20July%2005%20002.jpg

7. Leadership Square, probably downtown's most modern looking skyscraper, is also the city's most prestigious real estate address. Interestingly considering what's going on in OKC today, it was supposed to be one huge, 800 foot skyscraper but they cut it into two separate towers so it didn't throw the skyline off-balance.
http://www.priceedwards.com/announcements/tronox/leadership.jpg

8. I always had a fondness for the OPUBCO tower on the North Broadway Extension in far north OKC, despite that most people don't notice it or that it may seem like just another suburban tower to people coming into OKC from Edmond. The staggered elevation and extensive grounds I think set it apart.

Richmond's definitely got some impressive ones. Didn't even know about the Egyptian Building and the Markel Building. I like that old parking deck from the 1940's or so (it wasn't listed).

Here are a few from Charlotte I dig (aside from BOA and Hearst):

Calvary Church in Charlotte looks pretty neat.
And I love how they changed the name to Bojangles Coliseum as Bojangles is probably my favorite take-out chicken restaurant.

I would amend Louisville's to include:

City Hall:

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/10253648.jpg

What is so fascinating about this building, and why I posted such a large picture, is the detail on the facade. Above the windows on the second floor are busts of various livestock. This was put in to pay homage to Louisville as a marketplace: where the rural community came to sell their products. In the transit at the top is a bas relief of a railroad that is heading south. At the time, Louisville was a gateway to the south, and was the place where the Midwest industry shipped their goods to the post-war South. Also, the clock tower was originally built as a watch tower for fires. Ironically, City Hall caught on fire, and was completely missed by the watchman. It was rebuilt as a clock tower later. I just love this building.

The Cathedral of the Assumption

And, while I don't find it architecturally significant, I really like Preston Pointe

Love Louisville's City Hall....

Question: Were there originally supposed to be other watchtowers/clock towers on the other corners of the building? Kind of looks like it would look cool with another one to balance it. But its a great looking building either way. And the faced is beautiful. I love old buildings with intricate facades and ornamentation.

I know there is another city hall, but I think its still city offices? Maybe I'm totally wrong.

You're absolutely right about the water tower. Can't be lieve I left that out.

I must say, great pics.

And I'll also say, I believe BOA Charlotte may be one of the most attractive tower in the south. Something about it is very timeless. So many towers (especially those built in recent decades) become very outdated relatively quickly, but I dont really see that being a problem from BOA Charlotte.

It also seems like a design that any city in America could benefit from having it its skyline. It may not be a landmark or standout like it does in Charlotte, but I can't picture a major city in America that the BOA Charlotte building wouldn't look "at home" in.

And I 'third' spencer114 and SRG's sentiments: The South really is a beautiful place by any standards.
