SM Hotels Signs Contract with Carlson for Park Inn Davao
Monday, May 9, 2011
Source:
(09 May 2011. Pasay City, Philippines.) Philippine conglomerate SM Investments Corporation (SM) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation, signed a contract with Carlson, a privately held global hospitality and travel company, for the opening of a Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Davao City’s Lanang district. The hotel will be the very first Park Inn by Radisson in the Asia Pacific region. Park Inn by Radisson is one of the hotel brands under Carlson and is the largest mid-market brand for hotels under development in Europe.
The 200-room hotel will be located within the 175,000 square meter (sqm) mixed-use complex owned and developed by SM shopping mall subsidiary, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Other projects to rise in the complex are an SM Supermall and a convention center. SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation will construct and own the Php 750 million building for the Park Inn by Radisson Davao hotel, while management and operations will be handled by Carlson. Construction of the hotel is expected to start in the 3rd quarter of this year and is scheduled to open by 2013.
Elizabeth T. Sy, president of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation said, “The signing of our contract with Carlson to open a Park Inn by Radisson in Davao City is another concrete step towards fulfilling the vision of our founder, Henry Sy, Sr., to make the Philippines a world-class tourist destination. We believe that Davao is an ideal location for such an undertaking because of its robust economy, vibrant population, and excellent infrastructure including its international airport. In addition, the Park Inn hotel will benefit from the business synergies that will be created with the other upcoming SM projects within its vicinity.”
The 200-room Park Inn by Radisson will feature bright, bold, and fresh room interiors coupled with fun friendly service. “With the tagline Sleep Well, Live Well, Park Inn by Radisson hotels offer a hassle-free, clean and comfortable stay at a reasonable price,” says Xerxes Meher-Homji, executive vice-president and chief development officer, Carlson Hotels, Asia Pacific. The hotel will also offer other amenities such as an all-day dining restaurant, meeting rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, and a gym.
In September last year, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation opened the upper upscale, 400-room Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, which is also managed by Carlson. It also recently opened the Pico Sands Hotel, a 154-room resort hotel within Pico de Loro, SM’s eco-tourism project at Hamilo Coast, Nasugbu, Batangas.

isla May 15th, 2011, 05:59 AM Waterfront Cebu set for P300M renovation
By Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) Updated May 13, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments
CEBU, Philippines - Waterfront Philippines Inc., (WPI) is spending P300 million for the three-phase major facelift of its flagship hotel Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
WPI vice president for special projects Weslie Gatchalian announced the multi-million-peso renovation of its largest hotel establishment, starting with the physical improvement of its lobby and wash rooms, convention center facility, and other service outlets inside the hotel.
According to Gatchalian, this year starts with exciting times for Waterfront, re-enforcing its position as the all-in-one entertainment and accommodation complex in Cebu.
“We are extremely excited to embark on this multi-million-peso renovation project because this will further enhance our product and service offerings that will eventually yield to better guest experience and revenues,” he said.
After the three-phase renovation will be completed next year, the hotel is also planning to renovate its 170 standard rooms by 2013.
The 560-room hotel, the largest hotel facility of the WPI chain of hotels, is capitalizing on the growing interest of both domestic and global MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conference, and Exhibition) market.
Because of this, the second phase of the renovation project, will be dedicated to further improve its 16,000 square-meters Convention Center, of which a dedicated entrance for the convention facility will be installed.
Gatchalian said the budget will be sourced out from internally-generated funds of the company.
Also, Gatchalian bared plans to improve its mezzanine to give way to PAGCOR’s expansion plan within the hotel, of which the entire mezzanine area will be utilized.
“Our lobby will be grander and more luxurious than it is now. It will be the first time Waterfront will be renovating its lobby in over 10 years—a feature of the hotel that repeat guests have grown to appreciate and identify with. It is both challenging and exciting prospect,” said Waterfront general manager Marco Protacio.
WPI through its Waterfront Hotels and Casinos brand name is so far the largest Filipino-owned chain to hotels in the Philippines today. It operates five first class hotel-casino properties located in the major cities in the country.
Its properties include; Manila Pavilion Hotel & Casino, G-Hotel by Waterfront in Metro Manila, the two properties in Cebu Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, and the Waterfront Airport Hotel & Casino Mactan, and the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao.
Cumulatively, the group runs close to 1,600 guest rooms, and employs a total of 1,670 employees, and has over 13,500 square meters of convention and gaming space.
Last year, the company’s un-audited financial statements registered P1.8 billion in gross revenues, with gross operating profit of P656 million and a net operating profit of close to P100 million.
Its flagship Cebu City Hotel contributed 41 percent of the company’s over-all gross revenues as of 2010.

Pyramid of Asia Resort (http://www.pyramidofasia.org/healing.html)
Pyramid of Asia, Healing Center (Philippines)
The year 1999 was of special importance to Alex L. Orbito as it marked the final realization of the Pyramid of Asia, a lifetime dream, which began taking shape more than 40 years ago.
The Pyramid of Asia now rises from a farmland in the pilgrimage town of Manaoag in Pangasinan, the land of healers. The Pyramid was officially inaugurated on November 25, 1999 by Fidel V. Ramos, former President of the Philippines and in the presence of international participants from 21 countries around the world.
The German architect Dieter Loewer conceived the original design to accommodate Philippine cultural and spiritual patterns while capturing the cosmic energy flow. This results in a perfect collision of magnetic and electric waves inside the Pyramid.
Extreme weather conditions deteriorated the wood and in the year 2007, the entire Pyramid was restored to its original glory with the kind help of Mrs. Meijerink and Mr. Matser, applying stronger sustainable material.
Rev. Orbito advises to meditate inside the Pyramid ideally at sunrise or sunset for the balancing of energies and to subsequently drink from the energized water inside.
As of today, the Pyramid of Asia Resort furthermore consists of a chapel for gatherings and seminars, a restaurant with outdoor bar and terrace, large (adult and children) swimming pools surrounded by greens, massage cottages and a herbal and meditation garden. The resort also accommodates 20 bungalows (2 star comfort) offering single, twin or family bedrooms with a separate bathroom.
The nearby town Manaoag is considered a pilgrimage place and is known for its historical image of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, which is venerated in the Manaoag shrine.
Manaoag forms part of the Province of Pangasinan, which name means "land of salt"; it is derived from asin, the word for "salt" in the local language language. Most of the spiritual healers and/or their ancestors were born or orginated from this particular province.

Christendom June 4th, 2011, 07:23 AM BACOLOD: SM proposes P2.5B dev’t on Capitol land to build Hotel and Convention Center (http://www.bacolodcityguide.com/sm-proposes-p2-5b-devt-on-capitol-land-to-build-hotel-and-convention-center/)
Bacolod City — SM Prime Holdings Inc. is offering to buy or lease a 6.5-hectare property owned by the Negros Occidental provincial government on Gatuslao Street where it plans to build a convention center and hotel.
Hans Sy, SM Prime Holdings Inc. president, said his company also planned to expand its present SM City Mall and build commercial buildings on the property.
“We submitted an unsolicited proposal to build a hotel and convention center on property owned by the provincial government behind the Capitol. The initial estimate of investment is P2.5 billion,” Sy told reporters after a meeting with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd district) at the provincial Capitol in Bacolod City to discuss SM’s proposal.
“Whether the property will be purchased or leased is subject to final negotiations, following the provincial government’s review of our proposal,” Sy added.
The proposed convention center would have a seating capacity of 3,500, while a 200-room hotel will be built along with it. Another 200-room building will be constructed later.
Sy said he brought his team of architects, financial and legal advisers and contractors during the meeting with Marañon and Benitez to “show our seriousness regarding the project.”
Sy said construction could begin within six months of the signing of an agreement.
Sy said the hotel in Bacolod would be part of the SM chain of hotels in the country, including hotels in Cebu, Tagaytay and Davao.
Marañon said the 6.5-hectare property could be put up for bidding to all interested parties by August.
But he added he would not put on sale the property around the Capitol Lagoon Park or the site of the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail, also on Gatuslao Street.
The development of the property behind the Capitol will be good for Bacolod and Negros Occidental's economy, he added.
Benitez, a friend of Sy, said the project SM was proposing to undertake would be good for the local economy. /INQUIRER

LGU optimistic of tourism boost over first five-star hotel in Sibulan
Pia NegOr, June 6, 2011
by Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, June 6 (PIA) --- The local government of Sibulan has welcomed the construction of a five-star hotel in the municipality which broke ground on June 4, 2011.
Present during the groundbreaking ceremony were representatives from the municipal government led by Sibulan Mayor Marcela Bartoces.
Sibulan Information Officer Concepcion Rosales said the hotel, located a few meters away from Bravo Golf in Sitio Pancil, Brgy. Looc, will be the first five-star hotel in Negros Oriental.
The Sibulan government is optimistic that the hotel will drive up the tourism traffic in the town which is adjacent to Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental.
Rosales said a team was sent earlier to test the soil in said area to determine if the site is strong enough for the planned construction. "Atty. Edilberto Bravo wanted to make sure that the site can hold a 40-room structure and a convention center," she said.
Atty. Bravo is the chairman and chief executive officer of UBIX Corporation and the owner of Bravo Golf, Hotel and Spa. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

I remembered staying here during a conference in Zamboanga. This hotel is along the beach and I could very well remember seeing fast crafts and boats going to Basilan disappear in the horizon, usually enveloped by clouds. It was quite a magical site seeing those fast crafts disappear amidst clouds or mists in the sea.

Bolinao probably has the finest beaches in the entirety of Pangasinan – with the beach in Patar (about 30-45 minutes away from Bolinao town centre) the most scenic and the most well-known. I was prepared to be underwhelmed by Patar (about 45 minutes away from Bolinao town- PhP200 tricycle ride), but instead, I was welcomed by a gorgeous looking cream colored sandy beach, and very clean, turquoise waters which reminded me of the cream-colored to golden beaches of Australia (which probably partly explains the presence of a small Aussie community in the area). The beach is pretty clean, and there are no pushy touts in the area, and on an ordinary weekend, you can get a piece of solitude in Patar. We found the beach in Patar extremely likable and didn’t mind just chilling out with a beer for breakfast in one of the small open-air nipa huts in the area. Be forewarned though, we spied a karaoke machine in the area (we secretly wished it would surrender and break down against the salty ocean air). We encountered a group of Koreans living in Baguio City who tried to practice their English on our group (which was composed by 3 Australians and 1 Filipino). Our expat writer, Scott Allford cheekily suggested that Patar is better than the most famous and apparently best Korean Beach- Haeundae Beach (where you have more people than sand and you have to pay to be under one of the gazillion umbrellas on the beach). The Korean guy replied, that Patar has no nightclubs – and all of us (me and the three Aussies included) smiled – Exactly – and this is the main reason why Philippine beaches are better than most of the popular beaches in the world – beaches like Patar are relatively unspoiled, charming and not too commercialized which is the way beaches should be. If a low pressure area is nearby, Patar Beach (reef break) also offers great surfing opportunities and there is little surfing community in the area mostly composed of resident Aussies.
Apart from Patar, there are other notable beaches in Bolinao – the Balingasay Beach, and the stretches of beaches along Ilog Malino. There is a Marine Sanctuary on Silaki/Silaqui Island which features Giant Clams. In other parts of Pangasinan, other beaches that are worth checking out are Sabangan Beach off Infanta, Tambobong White Sand Beach (favorite of anglers) of Dasol, and the Tondol White Sand Beach of Anda.
Patar’s Beach, however, has faults of its own – the disgusting pile of concrete called Treasures of Bolinao, the most prominent hotel in the area, not only basically encroached on the beach itself but had the chutzpah to build an elevated walkway on three natural rock formations- an illegal act, if not a total crime against nature if not against the law. Sensible travelers and residents in the area have complained about this eyesore which unfortunately wasn’t destroyed by the last big typhoon that hit Bolinao. I would like to dissuade anyone from patronizing the services of this horrible, horrible hotel until they rectify this grievous act against nature.
A few minutes away by foot from Patar is the Cape Bolinao Lighthouse (30.78 Meters/101 Ft.) on a hill on Punta Piedra Point, it is the second tallest in the country after the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The Bolinao Lighthouse was built in 1905 by British, Filipino and American engineers and is one of the 5 most prominent lighthouses in the country. The lighthouse is literally dying and in need of immediate repair after it was severely damaged by Typhoon Emong. The building right next to it lies in ruins and almost all hope has been abandoned as no one seems to have done anything about this important piece of history. With the Philippine Coast Guard as the sole owner of the Lighthouse and the Local Government of Bolinao as the main caretaker, we hope that the lighthouse will eventually be saved and preserved and continue to stand as a sentinel of Bolinao and safely guide the ships that pass around the area. The Lighthouse has a 140-step winding stairway that goes up to the illumination tower and when it is working in its best condition (not at the moment of course) is visible 44 kilometers away guiding ships led to the Bolinao area by the Zambales lighthouse (presumably Capones Island Lighthouse) and then toward to the Poro Point Lighthouse in La Union. According to the late Bolinao historian, Catalino Catanaoan, Cape Bolinao’s Lighthouse original light machine was manufactured in England, while the lantern, with three wicks and chimneys was imported from France. For its first 80 years of operation, kerosene was used in the lighthouse in Bolinao and then when the local electric cooperative extended its operations to Patar, the lighthouse began to run on electricity (which seems to be extremely fickle in Bolinao- we caught a power outage whilst we were in Patar).

There are three popular caves in Bolinao but only two are worth recommending. The three caves are Enchanted Cave, Wonderful Cave and Cindy’s Cave. All charge a nominal entrance fee. Enchanted Cave is the most popular, with crystal clear natural swimming pools underground, coral formations, stalagmites and a display of fossilized Giant Clams. Wonderful Cave is small and a little private but there is a time limit of about 30 minutes per stay. Cindy’s Cave is the shallowest amongst the three, with the kitschy addition of a shower in the middle of the swimming area (that was a little bit random, we think) and apparently, not the cleanest waters either. You may also want check out Cacupangan Cave, (as well as Binmatya and Arasaas Caves) in Mabini town with an underground flowing into the Balincaguing River (do this only during the dry season) and the 200 meters long Villacorta Caves (also in Mabini) features basin-like formations, terraced rock, a chamber and gypsum flowers.
Apart from beaches and caves, Bolinao is also known for its waterfalls – Bolinao Falls 1 and 2 (not as named imaginatively as the Wonderful and Enchanted Caves) but what they lack in creative names they compensate with their refreshingly clean waters and seemingly unspoiled, pretty scenery. The waterfalls are located in Samang Norte which can be reached in about 40 minutes by tricycle with mostly very bad roads on the way. Tara Falls is nearby the bridge going to Anda but it is too small and unimpressive and unless you have time to kill, is not exactly on our must check out list. You may also want to check out Mambaciano and Mayaman Waterfalls near Canal Bay in Sual and Antong Falls in Sison.

The Fourteen Mile Reef off Santiago Island is perfect for diving and is teeming with marine life and hard and soft corals.

Unarguably, the Hundred Islands National Park is the ultimate crown jewel of Pangasinan tourism where its 123 islets sitting on the tranquil waters of Lingayen Gulf congregate in a small area just off the city of Alaminos. The islands, most of which are uninhabited, offer snorkeling, swimming, spelunking, camping and kayaking opportunities with its many strips of white sand beaches and sand bars. The best developed is probably Quezon Island (named after the Philippine Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon) with facilities that include 2 dining pavilions, grilling area and Giant Clams Garden. Governor’s Island, meanwhile, who once played host to the Philippine edition of that campy reality TV franchise – Big Brother has a house here which one can now rent if one decides to stay at Governor’s Island. Governor’s Island also has a view deck which boasts sweeping views of this beautiful National Park. For people with kids, the Children’s Island meanwhile has the shallowest waters in the marine park and perfect for children to practice their swimming skills. The Hundred Islands National Park has Bantay Dagat (literally “Sea Guardians”) who protect the marine park from illegal fishing and also double as lifeguards in case of emergencies –
Other places of interest would be the Manleluag Spring National Park in Mangatarem, the Agno Umbrella Rocks (three mushroom shaped stone boulders) of Agno, the hot and cold springs of Mt. Balungao near Rosales, the Limahong Channel (where the infamous Chinese corsair escaped after his failed attempt to establish a colony on the shore of Manila Bay).

Atmosphere awarded “Top 20 Resort Property 2011”
This month, Property Report South East Asia Magazine, the region’s leading luxury real estate publication,
announced its annual Top 20 Resort Properties in South East Asia.
Atmosphere Resorts Residences proudly made it onto the list this year as the only property in the Philippines.
The list features the best private residences currently available to investors – from beachside luxury to countryside retreats -
within fully operational resorts around the region.
“This year’s chosen properties aptly reflect the quality and scope of private resort accommodation on offer to buyers in South East Asia”, says Andrew Batt, publishing director at Ensign Media. “Investment in resort properties is a growing trend in popular tourist destinations. Buyers often become attached to their favourite holiday spot and the added assurance and hospitality offered by a quality resort means many people see these properties as an attractive and secure purchase.”

Antulang Beach and Apo Island
We were in Dumaguete last weekend for our annual company outing. We stayed at Antulang Beach resort.
Nestled 40 kilometers south of Dumaguete City, Philippines, ANTULANG BEACH RESORT is proud to be the first Philippine resort to offer private pool villas to guests. Each of the flagship accommodations comes with its own swimming pool (no plunge pools here), heated Jacuzzi and luxurious, spacious rooms all decked out in Canadian pinewood.
Suspended on ten sprawling hectares of sheer cliffs peppered with a kaleidoscope of bougainvillea blooms, swimming pools and premium rooms are positioned right at the cliffs’ edge, ensuring guests a commanding view of an endless sea, while winding staircases lead directly to a kilometer’s stretch of isolated white sand beach strewn with large, natural rock formations. So on any given evening, let the gentle lapping of waves caressing boulders on the beach lull you to sweet, glorious slumber, and catch up on unhurried, leftover dreams of Antulang...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qPmN447YiOA/TfbrcgaSBzI/AAAAAAAABTA/wGpTzJH4NHo/s400/antulang3.jpg
There's a winding staircase on the cliff; crystal turquoise waters--I am in love!
We also visited Apo Island via a yacht ride. Sosyal! The lovely Annabelle Lee!
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zc51mgGsIYM/Tfbse3bjohI/AAAAAAAABTE/E5m2oMD-2Cg/s400/annabelle_lee.jpg
At the island, we were greeted by these:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZdUIdJvSUEQ/Tfbs9U9_NRI/AAAAAAAABTM/sI0HToiMaHY/s400/DSCN2577.JPG
Snorkeling at the Marine Sanctuary is a must! The Apo Island is one of the top ten diving sites in the country and the world! A multitude of marine life awaits one's eyes!
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2YQ_WZhn-CM/TfbtxZDUfJI/AAAAAAAABTQ/B7ERYtbggn8/s400/marine_sanctuary.jpg
The place is very much preserved, a diving instructor told us the view underwater was replicated somewhere in US! Big time! It was low tide during the time the we dipped at the waters- we had several bruises on our legs. You can't step on the corals-- one small step may crash them.
On our last day, we had a yacht cruise to Tambobo Bay.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Mk_rUgAMcTc/Tfbujf-BpXI/AAAAAAAABTY/BhbBS8-ua7s/s400/tambobo_bay2.jpg
It was so picturesque, you thought you'd only see it on postcards! =)
I had a great vacay at Antulang-- one of the best I've been. BTW, according to this site, Antulang belongs to the Top 10 Luxury Resorts in the PH! Winner!
I also had my several FIRSTS here:

Antulang is the best-- spectacular views, amazing and warm staffs, excellent food-- I give it 10 stars!

A trip to Hundred Islands National Park and its home, Alaminos City, is a great diversion from the hustle and bustle of the busy, urban life. Breathe in the refreshing views - rice paddies, azure sea - and the rustic and peaceful lifestyle as you make your way to Alaminos City. And upon arrival, savor the city’s unique and dynamic spirit, friendly atmosphere and especially, the beauty and adventure that lies in the hundred wonders that is Hundred Islands.
Made up of over 123 islands, with only 3 developed, this fascinating chain in the northern Philippines offers travellers a look into untouched beauty. Don’t be put off by the lack of ammenities - while there is a lack of commercialism, there is no end to Hundred Islands’ natural delights

The Manor Hotel poised to set standard for green hotels

CAMP JOHN Hay’s history had undergone a colorful, storied—and sometimes traumatic path—for 80 years. It served as a rest and recreation base for the American soldiers and a concentration camp for the Japanese nationals. During the World War II it was reduced to ruins. Decades and many presidents later, the sprawling property has come to be known a scenic mountain resort and home to the world-class The Manor Hotel in Baguio City.
Built in 2000, the hotel structure has drawn unparalleled attention with its impressive structure taking concept from forest log cabins set amid a backdrop of towering pine trees. Its interiors evoke a Filipino-Colonial feel with paneled walls, wooden furniture and outdoor patios.
But this four-story structure is not just swank and swagger. Behind the imposing Manor Hotel and its cozy interiors are green warriors who take conscious efforts in making the hotel a model of green structures in the city.
Innovations
“Throughout its operations, the hotel has come up with many innovations to support the green movement,” said Ramon Cabrera, general manager in an exclusive interview with Inquirer Property.
The most significant energy efficiency measure at present is the hotel’s lack of air-conditioning units owing to an already favorable weather and temperature in the city. All lighting fixtures in the hotel were likewise replaced by compact fluorescent lamps from the old halogen and incandescent lamps.
As per report of its engineering department, as of May 2011 the company was able to save 112,320KW or 16.05 percent compared to last year’s energy consumption. The energy savings were due to the bulb replacements, it reported.
The Manor Hotel offers guests with 177 rooms on five-star services through highly trained staff and its world-class facilities. Guests can choose from studio-type, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, all offering a breathtaking view of the mountain range and pine forests. All units are equipped with a refrigerator, hot and cold shower, in-room safe and a phone system.
Energy cards to activate electrical power inside the rooms are also implemented inside the hotel premises.
Blessed with an environment that truly sets it apart from other hotels in the city, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the hotel makes a conscious regard of its environs.
For its landscape improvement, Cabrera said the hotel uses compost for fertilizers. The wood materials used for furnishings are made of cedar logs imported from Canada and have undergone wood treatment prior to its importation.
From the recent data provided by CJH Development Corp., there are approximately 250,000 full-grown trees in the area. The Manor occupies 2.48 hectares of land.
Cabrera furthered that companies within the CJH complex conduct annual tree-planting drive to replace rotten or uprooted trees due to natural calamities. If there are trees threatened during expansion purposes, it seeks permission from the local environment office. The hotel follows the principle of replacing 100 pine seedlings for every tree cut.
Breathtaking rooms
Aside from the magnificent view of the Cordillera mountain range and the breathtaking rooms, The Manor Hotel at Camp John Hay has a lot more to offer. It has a bar and restaurant owned by the famous chef Billy King, a top-of-the line gym and a spa. Outside, guests can visit places within the camp such as Shalan ni Kabadjo, Ecotrail, The Historical Core, Butterfly Sanctuary, The Art Park and Igorot Garden.
For the more adventurous, the Paintball Republic and the Baguio Tree Top Adventure are must-try. The complex also houses a Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf course.
Currently the hotel averages 70 percent to 80 percent occupancy rate during peak or off-peak period. It is managed by Camp John Hay Leisure Inc., which also runs The Suites at Camp John Hay and CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center.

Davao hotel epitomizes the city’s best attributes
http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/files/2011/07/t0703fran-polo-davao_feat4_1.jpg

One of the topmost floors of Marco Polo Davao offers a panorama of clear skies, the vast Davao Gulf in the horizon and thick patches of greenery against a dynamic cityscape. Framed by a wide glass wall in a cozy lounge, the view is proof of how the hotel takes pride in its environment.
Not only do most of the rooms and function venues offer picturesque views, furnishings and interiors come in cozy earthen colors, too.
By tapping the local produce and genuine warmth of the Davaoeño staff, the five-star hotel combines luxury with some of the city’s best attributes.
Our room had modern-day comforts: flat-screen plasma with cable connection, iPod docking station, executive desk, WiFi, mood lighting, ergonomic pillows, well-equipped bath, minibar.
Sliding glass doors led to a veranda with lounge chairs on which to sit and gaze at—depending on the time of day—large fluffy clouds or star-studded parcel of sky. Bedtime is an inviting thought, courtesy of complementary mini-desserts usually delivered or left on the minibar early in the evening.
Book a room on the fourth level and gain quick access to The Deck, a recreation hub with fitness center and 25-meter pool. Two other attractions, Polo Bistro and Lazuli Spa, we recommend you do not miss.
Shield from the elements
Polo Bistro’s charm lies in the setup and cuisine. Wood-framed glass panels shield diners from the elements but give a 360-degree view of The Deck. At nighttime, the panels are detached to let in cool air and live music.
The food is excellent (a factor shared with Café Marco and Cantonese fine-dining restaurant Lotus Court, on the second and third levels, respectively). Starters include freshly baked bread, large squid rings, lightly breaded thick mozzarella sticks paired with tangy-sweet salsa. Dishes such as Three Bean Salad, Tiger King Prawns, Escalope of Salmon, Beef Medallions and Baby Back Pork Ribs create a medley of flavors.
http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/files/2011/07/t0703fran-polo-davao_feat4_2.jpg
Adjacent to the bistro, Lazuli Spa renders services that seem to have been inspired by snack-bar fare—Coffee Latté and Chocolate Scrub, Organic Rice & Ginger Rub, Cool Cucumber Wrap, Honey Body Polish, Lemongrass Sole Therapy, Fresh Mint Foot Pampering. If pressed for time, maximize an appointment by choosing a package that combines traditional massages, facials or treatments with any of the novelty services.
Lobby Lounge, one of two venues for a nightcap on the ground floor, serves up light snacks, desserts and beverage while relaxing music wafts from a grand piano.
A few steps away is Eagles, where good deals can be had almost every night. At the time of our visit, table brochures advertised buy-one, take-one drinks all week long and 50-percent off women’s beverage tab on Saturday Ladies’ Night. A quirky offer was available Wednesdays, when winning a coin-toss challenge versus the service crew meant you need not pay the bill.
Top of the game
To stay on top of the game, the 11-year-old Marco Polo continues to invest in keeping products and services fresh, said general manager Nigel Fisher. This includes renovating facilities such as Lotus Court, which had undergone a three-month reconstruction last year, and Café Marco, now being transformed into a modern, interactive buffet café-restaurant. The makeover of guest rooms begins this month. But some of the most significant changes are not just within the Marco Polo walls.
“The name of the hotel is quite widely recognized,” said Fisher. “I use the position we have to get others publicity and attention that they would otherwise not be able to get.”
For example, the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Growers Association, whose members include ex-combatants from Bukidnon. With help from American foreign-assistance agency USAID, the group adheres to international standards in growing produce, which was introduced to the local media club in a get-together hosted weekly by Marco Polo.
Sponsoring eagles
The hotel further gets involved in the community through its support of coastal cleanups, indigenous tribal festivals, local fashion and art. The Philippine eagle sanctuary in Barangay Malagos also has an active sponsor in Marco Polo.
http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/files/2011/07/t0703fran-polo-davao_feat4_3.jpg
Davao is an ideal tourist destination, said Fisher, an Australian whose family enjoys the outdoors and has, in fact, vacationed in the city. The typhoon-free zone is a godsend, especially to sports and adventure-seekers. No less than the World Health Organization has certified the city’s tap water clean and potable. Low crime rates have been maintained by police forces and Peace and Order Councils, which rank among the best in the country. Affordable products and tourist attractions also bring more value for money.
“It’s a delight to realize that the Davao experience is nothing like how the outside world perceives Mindanao and how the outside world perceives the troubles going on in this part of the world,” said Fisher.
“It is an example of how a city can get on in spite of the negative publicity.”
The stunning view from Marco Polo’s topmost floors is enough to give one that clearer picture.

It was ubiquitous as the blue domed white structure got visible from the distance. Thunderbird Resorts sits, ensconced at the tongue of land that is the peninsula of Poro Point in La Union, the only five star resort in Northern Luzon as of this writing.
It was a great relief as we finally, after 5 hours on the road from Manila, drove up the main building in all its white washed glory whose architecture has been inspired by the traditional structures of Santorini Island in Greece. Mention of that far off place not only brings historical facts of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in recorded history but more for its beautiful bleached whited buildings that are perched on the rugged terrain of that ancient caldera.
http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/thunderbirds_1.jpg
Like its inspiration, Thunderbird Resorts is also atop a promontory spanning 65 hectares of undulating hills, 100 foot cliffs and giving a beautiful view of the sea that, at the time we were there, was rather dramatic as dark clouds pregnant with rainwater hovered above. The sight was just memorable. Like impressionistic paintings of the masters.
I just like its architecture. The smooth clean lines, block like with its arcade. An open air structure that is both inviting and invigorating to the tired soul and body. Despite its minimalistic approach, there are still surprises. The dome itself seems to be the piece de resistance, where everything else revolves around. Inside, a peek up does provide a beautiful monochromatic (blue hued) artwork.
http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/thunderbirds_6.jpg
http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/thunderbirds_5.jpg
Spacious rooms of the resort.
http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/thunderbirds_4.jpg
The area is large. With its casino, restaurants with good food, golf course and sports facilities, and eventually, the residences that will be built later on. From the main building going to the sea, is a swimming pool in an aptly landscaped area while the sea is untouched left to its rugged state.
http://langyaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/thunderbirds_3.jpg
Pool area with a view of the hotel building.
But its not all beautiful and rosy though. The benches and sheds along the coastline can be an eyesore and a bit garish even with its tri-toned color scheme. It would have been better if the structures were built in consonance with the minimalist architecture of the main building or in harmony with the environment but what you have is rather detached and imposing.
The place is actually still in development and many areas are barren or undeveloped considering that this is a five star hotel and resort. It can be a bit untidy to look at but I think, a few years from now, it will be transformed into one big landscaped area.
If given a chance to linger more, I would have just sat on a chair at the verandah of the main building or at the rooms and stared for hours at the sea, contemplating on the vagaries of life while observing nature: the changing tides, the brooding sky and fading sun as day turns to night.

This 5-star hotel which will have full amenities, will also have a convention center.
OtAkAw July 6th, 2011, 04:25 PM ^^By saying "5-star" you mean in the league of the Manila Peninsula, Makati Shangri-la, Shangri-la Mactan and the like?
ritche July 6th, 2011, 04:45 PM I guess the star rating has something to do with the ratings given by agencies (the DOT, I think) and they pertain to the amenities that a certain establishment can offer...
OtAkAw July 6th, 2011, 04:48 PM ^^And sometimes it can be used by scheming property developers to generate hype to a certain project: "We're opening this grand 5-star luxury hotel chuva chuva..." And by the time the project is finished, it will not live up to the expectations.
ritche July 6th, 2011, 04:53 PM But then their accreditation could always be revoked by the DOT...The thing is you will have to trust these developers that they will have to come up to the "hype" because there's a quantifiable standard that they are trying to achieve...In this case the 5 star rating.
OtAkAw July 6th, 2011, 05:09 PM ^^The thing is, DOT is one of the most imbecilic agencies of the government. Not that this is a matter of personal concern, but there are many members of the upper-class people getting "fooled" by hotels brandishing themselves as 5-star. I know this might sound a little prissy, but with the government upping the ante of our tourism industry, these little things should not be left at the dustbin.
Imagine the horror of a rich French tourist checking-in at a "fake" five star hotel only to find out his breakfast consists of microwaved soup and stale bread and his bathroom stocked with substandard toiletries.
Take the case of this famous blogger:
Tour of Tagaytay
June 6th, 16:57
I’m sure there are nice places to stay in Tagaytay, they’re just not open to the public. The best place to stay is a log cabin, but we have no access to one anymore. That is one of life’s regrets. My dream is to own a log cabin in Tagaytay one day.
...
Next, I checked out The Boutique. Don’t let the pictures and website fool you. Of all the places I looked at, this was the most dilapidated—from the lobby to the common areas, stairwell, and most especially the kitchen area. I had the urge to run out.

My note: This The Boutique brandishes itself as a 5-star luxury hotel.
See what I mean? ;)
At the end of the day, the discerning traveler should know what to do when traveling in the Third World: stick to the luxury chains (Peninsula, Marriott, Shangri-la, we have plenty).
slerz July 6th, 2011, 06:01 PM In Cebu City, there are a lot of hotels but most of them wants to remain in a 4 star status. There are only two 5 star hotels in Cebu City (Marco Polo hotel and Radisson Blu).
Even Waterfront Cebu City Hotel is only a 3 star if I'm not mistaken...
edit: Waterfront is a 4 star pala...

Next, I checked out The Boutique. Don’t let the pictures and website fool you. Of all the places I looked at, this was the most dilapidated—from the lobby to the common areas, stairwell, and most especially the kitchen area. I had the urge to run out.

At the end of the day, the discerning traveler should know what to do when traveling in the Third World: stick to the luxury chains (Peninsula, Marriott, Shangri-la, we have plenty).

Truly. They have to adhere to the strict star classification system, no excuses. If you are 5-star hotel, everything you offer from location to paper towels should be of the highest most luxurious standards.
ritche July 7th, 2011, 03:48 AM Well, I believe this under construction resort hotel has what it takes to meet the strict classification of a 5 star hotel because of its nice location: it is located in hundreds, if not thousands of hectares of nice golf greens overlooking the view of the Tanon Strait (where nearby Cebu is located, and the city of Dumaguete)...And of course, it is backed by well connected and financed business entities who know what it is to achieve a 5 star rating.
By the way, here's the news:
LGU optimistic of tourism boost over first five-star hotel in Sibulan
DUMAGUETE CITY, June 6 (PIA) -- The local government of Sibulan has welcomed the construction of a five-star hotel in the municipality which broke ground on June 4, 2011.
Looc, will be the first five-star hotel in Negros Oriental.

ritche July 7th, 2011, 03:55 AM ^^The thing is, DOT is one of the most imbecilic agencies of the government.

OtAkAw July 8th, 2011, 07:52 PM The question is: Is it officially accredited by the DOT as a five star hotel?
DOT is not very consistent with the granting of star-ratings. They can't even come up with a decent international tourism campaign for the country, what would you expect?
ritche July 9th, 2011, 03:25 AM So who do you think should rate our hotels and resorts? Maybe you have a better idea...
OtAkAw July 9th, 2011, 04:38 AM ^^Beats me. Developers should just stop randomly naming their properties 5-star kung obvious naman na hindi. ;)
ritche July 9th, 2011, 05:06 AM In a sense you are saying na mas magaling ka pa sa mga developers at sa DOT, am I right?
OtAkAw July 9th, 2011, 05:25 AM ^^ You are not, so please don't come up with such ridiculous assumptions.
I thought I was making a valid point, you're taking it too personally dude.
ritche July 9th, 2011, 06:10 AM So how were you able to conclude that this development could not come to a five star standard? From what you are insinuating you seem to be very experienced with the hospitality industry (I hope you are indeed).
OtAkAw July 9th, 2011, 07:27 AM ^^Oh geezus, did I?
You did not even answer my first question "By saying "5-star" you mean in the league of the Manila Peninsula, Makati Shangri-la, Shangri-la Mactan and the like?"
ritche July 9th, 2011, 07:35 AM Definitely not. Okay, can you define what is a 5 star hotel? And do you think a 5 star hotel/resort should be in a big metropolis? And you are saying that only big names such as the ones you mentioned can create 5 star hotels?
ritche July 9th, 2011, 07:41 AM Or on the other hand if you say in the league of 5 star accommodations, maybe yes (as what the developers intend this resort hotel would be). But I do not know what attributes of the names/brands you mentioned you mean...Your phrase "in the league" may have to be defined more somewhat.
OtAkAw July 9th, 2011, 07:53 AM Definitely not. Okay, can you define what is a 5 star hotel? And do you think a 5 star hotel/resort should be in a big metropolis? And you are saying that only big names such as the ones you mentioned can create 5 star hotels?
I don't need to educate you. You just have to see it with your own eyes. If by virtue of your excessive patriotism to your hometown you refuse to accept explanations as valid, then that is not my problem anymore.

This guy is really pathetic. Throws back his lack of knowledge to hide what he lacks...And shows other things which is irrelevant to the discussion. Can't answer straight. Tsk, tsk.
ritche July 11th, 2011, 02:56 PM I could only surmise why he showed those pictures, because probably for him that is his (or her?) only idea of being 5 star...
ritche July 11th, 2011, 03:54 PM Some tidbits about hotel classifications/ratings:
-There is no single and unified system of international rating for hotels.
-Hotels/resorts are rated usually rated by numbers (1-5) or by letters (A-AAA). The higher the number or the more the As, the higher the luxury.
-7 stars or 6 stars hotel are not officially recognized. So far only 5 stars are recognized as the highest level of luxury, and yet some hotels brand themselves as such to discriminate themselves from others and for marketing purposes. This shows that the hospitality industry is generous when it comes to ratings, and unless bad publicity show otherwise, the rating that the hotel owner/developer attaches to a certain hospitality property is kept.
ritche July 11th, 2011, 05:32 PM Another thing is 5 star resorts/hotels are not exclusive for beaches/areas with white sands...
http://www.tahiti.pictures-pacific.com/tahiti/east-tiarei.jpg
This is the kind sands in the island of Tahiti, and yet there are 5 star resorts in this area...

Naga Boy July 13th, 2011, 08:03 AM ^^ true... im wondering ba't hindi rin nasali ang Plantation Bay ng Cebu.. :D
I have been to some of the hotels listed, like Misibis, Shangri- La Mactan, several Discovery Managed Hotels, Amanpulo, Imperial Palace and of course Plantation Bay.
In my personal experience, although the kids enjoyed Plantation Bay tremendously, their services and the quality of their rooms are not at par with those that were on the list.
The rooms are just okay and comparable to standard hotels but far from luxurious.
But my kids a great hotel connoisseurs. They frown when they see a room they are not impressed.
They frowned when they saw our poolside Planation Bay room,:ohno: but they enjoyed their stay.
Still Plantation Bay is a great destination in my opinion.
My 13 year old daughter keeps a journal of her travels abroad, unfortunately she did not do hotel reviews, she did not discuss any local destination and failed to update her blog when she entered high school. She just blabbered like a kid that she is about the places she visited.
I still maintain her webpage as she is a minor.

Hahaha! You have a point. Furthermore, I think Amanpulo has already established itself at a point where it doesn't really need to rank in tourism lists, particularly from those issued by local organizations.
"Best resort in Asia".
Marami namang international awards ang resort na to.
like
http://plantationbay.com/images/main/plantationbayname_logo.gif
http://plantationbay.com/images/main/conde.gif
http://plantationbay.com/images/main/asiaspa.gif
tapos may ganito pa:
"it is the only Philippine resort among the 323 worldwide resorts with winning scores, surpassing some resorts in Koh Samui, Phuket, Bali, and Langkawi. Plantation Bay is the highest-rated hotel of any kind, city or resort, in the country. " :D
Or baka iba lang ang taste ng Pinoy tourists sa mga foreign tourists..
So parang ang layo ng difference ng surveys kaya IMO I won't take it seriously.
Open na ba sa public ang Amanpulo? Diba public property yun?
The most expensive resort in Asia if I'm not mistaken.

Belle finalizes share sale plans (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=Corporate&title=Belle-finalizes-share-sale-plans&id=34681)
BELLE CORP. has decided to sell over 1.5 billion new common shares at a discount to raise P4.525 billion for the construction of its resort complex in Parañaque City, the Sy-led developer said in a disclosure yesterday.
Belle’s board of directors approved the move yesterday and will be offering existing shareholders the option to buy a share at P3 apiece for every six stocks they already own.
The issue date will depend on the issuance of regulatory approvals, Belle said.
The price is lower than the share’s market value as of yesterday.
“[The] funds shall be used mainly for capital expenditures for [our] Belle Grande Manila Bay project,” the developer said, referring to the $750-million complex planned along Roxas Boulevard.
Belle Vice-Chairman Willy N. Ocier had earlier said this offering, along with the P5.6-billion loan facility from BDO Unibank, Inc., will be sufficient for the project.
The resort is slated for a soft opening within the year.
Once completed, it is said to feature 19,626 square meters (sq. m.) of gaming space, of which the first floor will be for the mass market, with 1,600 slot machines and 300 to 325 tables, according to earlier reports.
Other amenities such as the 6,000 sq. m. of VIP gaming areas, six hotel towers with 1,000 rooms -- including 86 luxury suites -- are meanwhile targeted to open in the fourth quarter of 2013.
In April, Belle said it was already in talks with hotel operator and Discovery brand owner HSAI Raintree for the management of one of the three hotels in the entertainment complex.
Belle Corp. shares closed higher by 2.7% to P4.90 from its previous close of P4.77.

Yes of course, open sa public. That is of by saying "public", you mean people who can afford to shell out $1,000 for the exclusive plane ride alone.
slerz July 13th, 2011, 05:47 PM ^^ah ic. But I did not mean what you mean. Even though the hotels there are the most expensive in the world as long as people can rent, that's open to the public... but if the whole island is bought by a billionare and is not open to anyone aside from him and his family to enjoy, ofcourse that's private, not public.
Coz I thought the island was already bought by a billionaire that's why I said close to public.
OtAkAw July 14th, 2011, 02:57 AM ^^Ah I see. Yes, hindi pa sya private. I think the whole of Pamalican Island (where Amanpulo is located) is owned by Aman Resorts.

As a beach aficionado, I would rank it 2nd in my book as the most beautiful beach I’ve been to in the world. I ranked the “Blue Lagoon” at Rangiroa, French Polynesia as number one. Amanpulo casitas cost $1150 (at that time, but now cost $1350) per night plus 10% service tax and 12% government tax per night (foreign passport holders are exempted from the 12% government tax), then you have to pay chartered flight fare of $400 (that's what we paid at that time but may cost more now) per person. Meals are not inclusive of their rates so all your ordered meals at their 3 restaurants during your stay are totaled up for your payment upon checkout before your chartered flight schedule.
OtAkAw July 15th, 2011, 06:38 PM ^^The figure I heard about the chartered flight then is grossly overblown.
My golly, with those price points, Amanpulo is something not everybody can afford! Grabe!!!

MANILA, Philippines — There is something beyond the ordinary about the creative energy in Cebu. In the field of design, the Cebuanos are parallel to none.
In fashion, for instance, the Cebuanos Cary Santiago, Furne One, and Jun Escario are synonymous to elegant silhouettes combined with fabric manipulation and detailed embellishments that are at par with the haute couture pieces from Paris and Milan.
I was very lucky to preview the latest resort collection of Jun Escario during the opening show of Fashion Watch this September. When Jun found out that I was in Cebu for the long weekend (upon the invitation of my dear friend Eva Gullas of Zee Lifestyle), he hosted an intimate gathering amongst friends in his uber chic abode. Cebu’s master couturier Philip Rodriguez came with accessory designer D’oro, whom I just saw recently at the Philippine Fashion Ball at The Peninsula Manila.
Immaculate white linens with exquisite embroidery coupled with diaphanous forms of printed fabric in hues of blue creating an ethereal look is Jun Escario’s forecast for Spring/Summer 2012. This is a collection to watch out for in the next season of Fashion Watch.
I missed seeing Cary Santiago but his presence was felt. We beheld two of his creations; two dresses in golden shades that my photographer friend Eric Alessi shot for a cover story for Zee Lifestyle magazine. Cary’s mastery in construction and fabric manipulation combining traditional haute couture techniques and modern technology like laser cutting never cease to amaze me.
When Cary found out that I was in the city, he called to invite me to be one of the judges in the most anticipated pageant in Cebu, which happens this November.
Kenneth Cobonpue was in Manila when I went to his showroom in the heart of the city, which to me is like a museum of contemporary Philippine furniture. Kenneth is busy preparing for his upcoming show in Paris, France where his most talked about “Phoenix” (the first car design made of bamboo and rattan) will once again wow the crowds.
Kenneth’s presence in the international stage has inspired our national leaders to take action in re-branding the image of the Philippines in the direction much like the Kenneth Cobonpue brand.
The world of Dedon
Did you know that the world’s leading manufacturer of outdoor furniture is based in Cebu? Dedon is a German luxury brand for outdoor furniture. Its headquarters is in Lüneburg, Germany but its manufacturing facility is in Cebu.
Dedon was founded by Bobby Dekeyser, who established the company after retiring from professional football. Dedon and its philosophy is reflected in all its products and offices. Its furniture has gained a following among VIPs and celebrities the world over. This is the result of its fresh approach to design and the perfection of elegance and style.
Designed by European and American designers, built according to German standards of durability, and handcrafted by expert weavers in Cebu, every piece of furniture embodies the excellent fusion of East and West.
Dedon has collaborated with internationally acclaimed designers like Philippe Starck, Jean-Marie Massaud, Richard Frinier, Frank Ligthart, Daniel Pouzet, and Fred Frety. These design partnerships are proof that Dedon will continue to push forward avant-garde concepts that promise to revolutionize the furniture industry.
When my dear friend Eva Gullas, the publisher of the coffee table book “Inside Cebu,” shared Dedon’s history over a lechon dinner at her home, I was blown away not only by the idea of having Cebu as a nest of one of the world’s biggest brands in design, but also with how Dedon takes care of its 4,000 Filipino employees. While Dedon is set to conquer the American market with a new flagship store in New York, it is also strengthening its brand in Asia.
In fact, the world’s latest luxury resort is about to open in Siargao, Surigao del Norte in Mindanao and it’s been named “Dedon Island.”

PROJECT WATCH: Limketkai Hotel – 18F or more?

Here are latest photo updates of Limketkai Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City’s first high rise building.
Taken yesterday, construction of the 18-storey hotel is now on the 17th floor. However, as observed, this could be taller than 18 as I illustrated below. The steel bars are still at going up at least one more level. Maybe, the 18th floor or penthouse has a high ceiling.

The hotel’s facade is said to be installed with golden glass-panels.
