IT park project progressing

Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (ETC) and the Chinese Telecom Corporation, ZTE, recently signed a 10 million dollar agreement to construct part of the technological infrastructure of the long awaited Information Technology (IT) Park of the federal government.

[....]

ETC and ZTE are expected to sign this agreement in October to commence the IT project. According to their agreement, ZTE is expected to build the Internet Protocol (IP) framework and will supply equipment such as routers and switchers. Building National Operating Center (NOC) which will be used to manage, maintain and operate the IT Park is also a job for ZTE, which is further expected to supply an internet protocol phone service with an integrated access device.

When the IT Park is completed it will give an opportunity for businesses willing to engage in IT manufacturing and the IT service industry to work in the same compound.

ICT Park to be Built with 5b Br
Bole Yerer location with 200ht is secured by ICTDA

The Council of Ministers decided on March 5, 2010, to establish the Information and Communication Technology Park Corporation with a capital of five billion Birr.

The directive for the establishment was approved by the council after it deliberated on the proposal of the Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (ICTDA). Its starting capital far supersedes the capital of both the Housing Development and Railway corporations, each of which started out with three billion Birr.

“We believe that it will elevate the development of ICT in Ethiopia,” said one of the officials who attended the meeting.

ICTDA has already secured 200ht of land from the Addis Abeba City Administration in the Yerer area of Bole District. Since last week the district has been issuing notices to property holders on the site, mainly to owners of quarries who are supplying gravel for construction work in the city. These owners have already started complaining to the district for ordering them to leave.

The development of the park includes roads, sewerage lines, various buildings for hotels, banks, and insurance companies. Various ICT companies will lease space in this park and conduct educational, service and production businesses.

The design of the park has been done by Vitro, an Indian company.

Board members and a director general are expected to be appointed for the park over the next few days, after which construction is expected start, although the time has not been fixed.

The government believes that ICT is one of the key inputs in its initiative to make Ethiopia a middle income country, according to the official who attended the meeting of the Council of Ministers. The ICT park will provide critical support toward fully exploiting the WoredaNet and SchoolNet projects which have been underway for sometime. The park corporation will be critical for the success of these projects, which aim to interconnect all woredas, schools and universities in the country in an information network, which, according to the official, is the reason why the government has allocated a huge starting capital.

very good news. I really wish they would branch out from the Bole area for development tho...they plan to build a new zoo in peacock park in the Bole Area as well.

In my opinion, some of these projects need to be taken to west Addis maybe towards Gefersa or Kolfe, there is plenty of infrastructure in that area and the ring road circles around there as well.

It park in first phase of construction.

Addis Ababa, February 23 (WIC) – The first phase of the Information Technology (IT) Park project, on which construction began three years ago, will be finalized next year, according to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT).

The Park which lies in an area of 200 hectares of land is located at Addis Ababa on the eastern side of Bole International Airport, just a few kilometers away from the center of Addis Ababa.

“The first phase with an area of approximately 70 hectares which consisted of MCIT Headquarter, data and incubation centers is expected to be completed next year,” Beker Seid, Communication and Public Service Head of MCIT told WIC.

The second phase is expected to be finalized after three years, he said.

The establishment of the IT Park would help attract overseas investment, generate foreign earnings, stimulate growth of domestic ICT industry and create employment and career opportunities for Ethiopian citizens, he said.

Upon full build-out, the IT Park will generate job opportunities for about 300,000 compatriots, he indicated.

According to Beker, the IT Park is expected to cost from 800-900 million birr to be fully financed by the government of Ethiopia.

The project positions Ethiopia 2nd in IT Park in Eastern Africa next to Kenya, he indicated.

I thought this project was a nonstarter. Very pleasantly surprised to read it actually went ahead. How come they didn't release a render though? It must not look too good lol.

I was just reading about this project, very nice

Hopefully a rivalry with Kenya's ICT Park will drive both to better themselves.

Ethiopia is exciting me greatly. The 2 countries that are getting everything done are not the most democratic in SSA- Rwanda and Ethiopia. In Ghana they have been talking for years about such plans. Nigeria have hardly made progress either. Rwanda, Kenya and now Ethiopia look to be at the head of ICT in Africa.

Is this just a single building or a combination of multiple ones? The project seems to be a much bigger one.
