The churches built underground in the Ethiopian town of Lalibela draw tourists from all over the world.

Many marvel at just how an army of workers at the end of the 12th Century managed to chisel the 11 churches out of rock.

As the BBC's Will Ross reports the people of Lalibela are determined to preserve their religious heritage.

It has... I believe there was a film, in English, released abroad, in the late 90's simply called "Adwa". I believe it was by the same guy who made"Teza".

And Adwa was a bit less heroic than that. The Ethiopian army was nearly as well-equipped as the Italian and outnumbered them by a 10:1 margin.

They are interviewing Haile Gerima that made Adwa & Teza, he is looking for funding for a feature film. The one released in the 90s is more of a dramatic documentary according to imdb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209898/) (I haven't seen it yet).

This is the plot from that dvd:

"In 1896, an African nation, largely armed with spears and knives, defeats a well-equipped and organized Italian military bent on colonization."

Where did you read that they were as well-equipped as the Italians?

Simfan34

The Italian army comprised four brigades totalling 17,700 troops, with fifty-six artillery pieces.[5] However, it is likely that even fewer men fought in this battle on the Italian side: Harold Marcus notes that "several thousand" soldiers were needed for support and to guard the lines of communication to the rear, so he estimates the Italian army to have consisted of 14,500 effectives.[6] One brigade under General Albertone was made up of Eritrean askari led by Italian officers[7]. The remaining three brigades were Italian units under Brigadiers Dabormida, Ellena and Arimondi. While these included elite Bersaglieri, Alpini and Cacciatori units, a large proportion of the troops were inexperienced conscripts recently drafted from metropolitan regiments in Italy into newly formed "di formazione" battalions for service in Africa[8][9].

As Chris Prouty describes:

They [the Italians] had inadequate maps, old model guns, poor communication equipment and inferior footgear for the rocky ground. (The newer Remingtons were not issued because Baratieri, under constraints to be economical, wanted to use up the old cartridges.) Morale was low as the veterans were homesick and the newcomers, too inexperienced to have any esprit de corps. There was a shortage of mules and saddles.[10]

But the Ethiopian army had its own problems. The first was the quality of its arms, as the Italian and British colonial authorities could sabotage the transportation of 30,000-60,000 modern Berdan rifles from Russia into landlocked Ethiopia. The Ethiopian army was also based on a feudal system of organization; as a result nearly the entire army consisted of peasant militia. Russian military experts[citation needed]. advising Menelik II suggested avoiding full engagement with Italians, instead engaging in a campaign of harassment to nullify problems with arms, training, and organization. In the battle that ensued wave upon wave of Menelik's warriors attacked the Italians.
Negus Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam.

Estimates for the Ethiopian forces under Menelik range from a low of 73,000 to a high of 100,000, outnumbering the Italians by an estimated five or six times.[11] The forces were divided among Emperor Menelik, Empress Taytu Betul, Ras[nb 2] Welle Betul, Ras Mengesha Atikem, Ras Mengesha Yohannes, Ras Alula Engida, Ras Mikael of Wollo, Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael, Fitawrari[nb 3] Gebeyyehu, and Negus[nb 4] Tekle Haymanot Tessemma.[12] In addition, the armies were followed by a similar number of traditional peasant followers who supplied the army, as had been done for centuries.[2] Most of the army was composed of riflemen, a significant percentage of which were in Menelik's reserve; however, the army was also composed of a significant number of cavalry and infantry only armed with lances.[2] On the night of 29 February and the early morning of 1 March three Italian brigades advanced separately towards Adwa over narrow mountain tracks, while a fourth remained camped.[13] David Levering Lewis states that the Italian battle plan

called for three columns to march in parallel formation to the crests of three mountains — Dabormida commanding on the right, Albertone on the left, and Arimondi in the center — with a reserve under Ellena following behind Arimondi. The supporting crossfire each column could give the others made the… soldiers as deadly as razored shears. Albertone's brigade was to set the pace for the others. He was to position himself on the summit known as Kidane Meret, which would give the Italians the high ground from which to meet the Ethiopians.[14]

However, the three leading Italian brigades had become separated during their overnight march and at dawn were spread across several miles of very difficult terrain. Their sketchy maps caused Albertone to mistake one mountain for Kidane Meret, and when a scout pointed out his mistake, Albertone advanced directly into Ras Alula's position.
An 1890s Italian map of Adwa (the map appears to be facing west)

Unbeknownst to General Baratieri, Emperor Menelik knew his troops had exhausted the ability of the local peasants to support them and had planned to break camp the next day (2 March). The Emperor had risen early to begin prayers for divine guidance when spies from Ras Alula, his chief military advisor, brought him news that the Italians were advancing. The Emperor summoned the separate armies of his nobles and with the Empress Taytu beside him, ordered his forces forward. Negus Tekle Haymanot commanded the right wing, Ras Alula the left, and Rasses Makonnen and Mengesha the center, with Ras Mikael at the head of the Oromo cavalry; the Emperor and his consort remained with the reserve.[14] The Ethiopian forces positioned themselves on the hills overlooking the Adwa valley, in perfect position to receive the Italians, who were exposed and vulnerable to crossfire.[2]

Albertone's askari brigade was the first to encounter the onrush of Ethiopians at 6:00, near Kidane Meret[15], where the Ethiopians had managed to set up their mountain artillery (40-42 Russian's mobile guns and some Russian's officers of the volunteers). His heavily outnumbered askaris held their position for two hours until Albertone's capture, and under Ethiopian pressure the survivors sought refuge with Arimondi's brigade. Arimondi's brigade beat back the Ethiopians who repeatedly charged the Italian position for three hours with gradually fading strength until Menelik released his reserve of 25,000 Shewans and swamped the Italian defenders. Two companies of Bersaglieri who arrived at the same moment could not help and were cut down.

Dabormida's Italian brigade had moved to support Albertone but was unable to reach him in time. Cut off from the remainder of the Italian army, Dabormida began a fighting retreat towards friendly positions. However, he inadvertently marched his command into a narrow valley where the Oromo cavalry under Ras Mikael slaughtered his brigade, while shouting Ebalgume! Ebalgume! ("Reap! Reap!"). Dabormida's remains were never found, although his brother learned from an old woman living in the area that she had given water to a mortally wounded Italian officer, "a chief, a great man with spectacles and a watch, and golden stars".[16]

The remaining two brigades under Baratieri himself were outflanked and destroyed piecemeal on the slopes of Mount Belah. Menelik watched as Gojjam forces under the command of Tekle Haymonot made quick work of the last intact Italian brigade. By noon, the survivors of the Italian army were in full retreat and the battle was over. So the Ethiopian army had been able to execute the strategic plan of Menelik's headquarters, contrary to a feudal system of organization and any objective circumstances.

Well this is the travel section- they're not going to be all negative there. Of course, I'll be happy once people start talking about "Ethiopia's economic miracle".

ESAT is the same "quality" as ETV in its programming, equipment, presenters (in fact, I'll even say ETV is better in this last point). It's the same tired old way of doing it. The same old snoozefest.
ESAT does not try to be dynamic, modern and engaging in its graphics, presenters, style, etc. It's bored looking people, talking about boring stuff, with boring outfits, in hushed tones, etc.

Ethiopia comes with many faces. It is a country rich of over 80 different ethnic groups, identities and culture. Distance brings very weak interaction with those groups in remote areas. Moses Riet DAK is an Ethiopian from Gambella region, currently living in the capital city, Addis Ababa. In addition to his regional mother tongue, he speaks fluent Amharic, the vernacular language of Ethiopia. Yet, people ask him where hes from and point to him as a foreigner. Moses shares his life experience and reflects on interethnic tolerance.

Pente-ism is the fastest growing religion in Ethiopia, I remember reading that somewhere.

The Orthodox must counter their work, but they are busy fighting each other.

The missioners go around and helps a lot of people by building schools etc in remote areas, it's no wonder that some people "switch side".

Anyways, freedom of religion should never be questioned.

More or less my stance on the issue- but the Pente missionaries do have some really shady practices, and the Orthodox Church is in need of serious reform.

Religious freedom? That looks like "religious imperialism" to me. If you want to help people then do so without infringing on their beliefs. These "Christian Imperialists" are so brazen that they try to convert muslims, even in somali areas.

Ethiopia should allow freedom of religion but "prostylizing" should be considered illigal. It is arrogant and a form of cultural imperialism. This video on the gamo shows this well.

I couldn't agree more with you AM2. It is really sad to see all they do is provide their assistance bundled with ideology and that is sad. IMO, the government needs to put some control mechanism that religious orgs shouldn't mix their ideology with assistance. I am not saying they should not preach, but preaching and assistance should be kept as far apart as possible. Using the financial vulnerability of people to spread their ideology is cheap shot. It is surprising people have no qualms doing that!

Gypsum boards are much more common in the US, and I guess they're cheaper here. Even the bigger concrete buildings can use the steel and magnesium boards as partitions and external cladding in Ethiopia (instead of using those concrete blocks). And no more plastering walls too. Gypsum boards are more common here because aside from the fact that it's been here for over a century, the United States doesn't really have any MgO ores. Canada has some, and so does China; but China is restrictive in its export.

So in the US, it makes economic sense to continue to use Gypsum boards rather than MgO. MgO boards are generally better products though.

Very nice presentation.....I wish it had about 6 parts to include the Southern region ( Ogaden, Harer, Dire Dawa) and the Eastern region ( Dessie, Combolcha).

I agree. I mean, the Hamers are unique and all but foreigners have covered them plenty of times, it would had been more interesting to see the Ogaden in the South-East. Other regions I would like to see is Benishangul/gumuz, Gambella, etc.

Now, why would these Ethiopians want to secede and join the hell hole Somalia? They would never want to do that. Meles is right, our Unity is based on in the improvement of our living standard. He said this 13 years ago.

That was just a whole lot of Amhara, and a couple sprinkles of Afar and Southern people.

Where are the Sidama, the Harari, the Oromo....?

How do you miss them?

 I knew you would say that! He probably just went with the photos he liked the most without being "politically correct". Here (http://www.chesterhiggins.com/portfolios_ethiopia.html?gallery=portfolios_ethiopia&skipno=119&currentIndex=4) is a photo from Oromia, there are many more on his website.

He has an impressive portfolio with not only portrays but a lot of photos on historical sites, nature, holiday ceremonies etc.

LOL You knew I would say that because you found it to be peculiar too, no?

It was a skewed presentation, if the idea is to show the diversity of the country.

(perhaps "diversity" was an impression I was given by Musa90's statement)

Otherwise, it probably would not have occurred to me.

..and where are Harari and Sidama 'n the rest? (I admit I haven't browsed his site thoroughly)

A rain forest in our region is pretty unique, they should educate the importance of keeping it to the wider population in the area. But it's hard to tell people with no means to support themselves, that they can't destroy it in order to make room for farm land. Pretty interesting people and story, thanks for sharing.

Does anybody know jonatan dimbilby? Well for us who grow up during the dergue reign he was part a hero and part a saboutor who show the world the terrible famine of 1972/3 which about 200,000 people perished b/se of hunger ,and which give to dergue enough execuse to dethrone emperor Haileselassie and his government(before they dethrone him on sep 12 on sep 11 they show dimbilby's "the hidden famine"on Etv to the people and turn the mass against him).
Well he is back to ethiopia and doing some docus the last time i saw was the amazing effort and investment the govrnment was doing to spread elementary schooling to the populace including the nomads, now on this documentary he is showing how the country is struggling to free itself from poverty and heading to prosperity. I love it  and i would like to thank ras siyan who first posted on the oasis! yaa even from the oasis sometime you get good stuffs

Did Aliens build the Lalibela churches? Angles?

The scientists can't explain how humans were able to build these churches considering the architectural complicity. Considering the amount of people that flock to the pyramids in Egypt, Lalibela should be promoted harder by the tourist ministry.

I was expecting good news relating to the Ethiopian economy and how it is improving...but this is just religious b.s talking about how even though Ethiopia is dirt poor it has x,y,z (insert non-economic "family values" characteristics here).

This is NOT nice words about Ethiopia...no different from what you regularly see on western tv.
