A nine million Birr ophthamology hospital at Gonder University went operational early September, months ahead of its official inauguration.

Ninety percent of the cost of the hospital was covered by an international NGO, Light of the World, based on an agreement signed on January 20, 2009, according to Demise Desta,External Relations senior expert at the University. The University covered the remaining 10pc cost. The hospital will offer such medical services as optometry as well as ophthalmic and cataract surgery.

The construction started March 4, 2009 on a 2,750sqm plot on campus grounds. The construction has been undertaken by Tadesse Belay Building Construction Plc. completing the work remaining on some parts of the building. Members of the university’s technology faculty undertook the consultancy work.

The building is left with some ceramics and plastering work as well as painting Tadesse Belay, the contractor, told Fortune.

The construction company, established in 1989 with a capital of 10,000 Br, is also undertaking the construction of a four storey office and classroom building for the University.

The University is also supported by Orbit International, an NGO, which has spent 863,193 dollars to financially support capacity building of Gonder University. Orbit works to build the capacity of the university’s medical services to the community. It has helped train 164 health officials who have carried out eye surgeries and other medical treatments for 15,000 people. Orbit’s project will be terminated in November 2009.
