Wikipedia: Harar (var. Harrar, Hārer, Harer; Somali: Adari ) is an eastern city in Ethiopia, and the capital of the modern Harari ethno-political division (or kilil) of Ethiopia. The city is located on a hilltop, in the eastern extension of the Ethiopian highlands about five hundred kilometers from Addis Ababa with an elevation of 1885 meters.

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Harar has an estimated total population of 122,000, of whom 60,000 were males and 62,000 were females. According to the census of 1994, on which this estimate is based, the city has a population of 76,378.

For centuries, Harar has been a major commercial centre, linked by the trade routes with the rest of Ethiopia, the entire Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and, through its ports, the outside world.

Harar Jugol has been included in the World Heritage List in 2006 by UNESCO in recognition of its cultural heritage. According to UNESCO, it is "considered 'the fourth holy city' of Islam" with 82 mosques, three of which date from the 10th century, and 102 shrines.

Harar is also famous for its distinctive, natural processed coffees which bear the same name.

Harar Gate, one of the biggest points of entry into the old walled city. It's a 20th-century structure (built during the rule of Haile Selassie), purposely made big enough for cars to drive through it.

The French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) quit writing poetry as a young man and ended up living in Harar, working as an importer/exporter, gun-runner, and explorer. This house was built after his death, but he lived in the neighborhood. The place is dedicated to his legacy and his love of Harar and its people.

Are there any development projects. I remember hearing that the community was thinking about repairing the 5 gates and repainting some areas.

Also, would any new developments in Harar happen outside the Jugol?

Thats important. When I was there two years ago, there was no running water for several days - actually the whole time I stayed there. No shower, no toilet flush...only water to buy from plastic bottles.
That however, was secondary to me, since harar is such a beautiful place.

Dire Dawa has never had problem of water. In fact dire dawa is the solution to Harar's water problem and the project you are talking about was trying to take water from dire dawa to harar.

Harar for water supply!
By Muluken Yewondwossen
Monday, 17 May 2010 13:11

After three years of delays, the project to provide safe drinking water for Harar and the surrounding area should be completed within days.
Last Thursday evening, the water began pumping from the third pumping station to the last pumping station at Dengego from where it will be fed to Harar.
A source from the project told Capital that if power cuts do not interrupt the pumping work, the water will reach Harar this weekend. According to a source, after Dengego the water moves downhill, while pumping is demanded at the other four stations.
A source said that work on the fourth station was delayed for two days until Thursday due to a leak between station three and four. He said this is expected during the trial period.
The Harar Water Project was started five years ago with funds mainly from the African Development Bank (AfDB). It was expected to take 20 months. The overrun is due to the number of wells increasing to four, design revision, and financing delays from the AfDB.
The original project plan was to drill 12 wells, including two that provide a service for the Dire Jara community that live in the area but are under the control of Dire Dawa City Administration.
The 71 kilometre main pipeline installation that crossed three regions (Dire Dawa, Oromia and Harari) was completed two years ago. A source said that within the coming two weeks the water supply will cover all parts of Harar using the pipelines installed previously. The government planned to install another line from house to house to substitute the old one, but a source said the house to house pipeline project will be undertaken separately.
The 12 wells can provide 268 litres of water per second and the other four wells drilled after the increase in recipients produce 160 litres per second.
The Ministry of Water Resource (MoWR) project will provide drinking water for around six million people from Dengego, Adele, Haromaya, Aweday, Harar, Haromaya University and Dire Dawa Police Training Camp. The Dire Dawa City Administration was inquiring about whether it can use the water, as some of its kebeles are beneficiaries from the supply.
The MoWR has paid 6.5 million birr to the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation for the power supply. According to the source, the distribution networks work in Harar, Aweday and Haromaya concluded this budget year.
The electro mechanical part of the project is controlled by Indian Tenfam and a local company Hagbes, and the civil work is undertaken by CGC a Chinese construction firm. Totally, the project has consumed 333 million birr, from this amount, AfDB provided 215 million birr in loans and a 12 million birr grant; the regional and the federal government budgeted 66 million birr; and the Water Fund Office gave a 35 million birr loan.
Since 2004, Haromaya Lake, the main water supply of Harar and the area, has dried and about two million people have been affected by diseases related to lack of clean water.
The project coordinator Mohammed Ahmed told Capital a public announcement of the completion is expected to be made next week.
