Habab May 6th, 2010, 05:58 PM Gondar village was built at the start of Portuguese colonization. They built low-grade castles for the local villagers. Then during the Italian colonization of Ethiopia (1936-1941), the Italians built a lot of buildings and roads, much to the satisfaction of the local villagers. If you want flies on your food and smell like fecal matter, then this adventure awaits you. Don't bother asking for a toilet, you're most likely stepping on it.

I really wish we had someone that could help us move the old thread to this section or at least merge this thread with the older one.
Here is the older thread by the way: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=455692&highlight=gondar
Anyway as far as Gondar is concerned....it is one of my favorite places in the world. When I went back to Ethiopia back when I was younger kid, I got pretty sick in Addis for whatever reason and my parents were afraid we would have to cut the vacation short and head home. But we went on instead and as soon as we landed in Gondar at my aunts home, I dont know if it was the air or what, but I was cured. All I have are fond memories of the place no matter how many times I go to visit it.
ERIFreedomFighter May 28th, 2010, 03:00 PM How many of you Ethiopians knew this about Gondar?
Gondar expanded dramatically in the late 1930s as a
colonial administrative center for Italian East Africa. The
city bears witness to the ways colonial authorities and their
planners used urban design to reconcile the fascist regime’s
demands for ideological representation with the practical
needs of everyday life. Gondar exhibits a striking sensitivity
to topography and historical preservation, yet exploits
these insights to reinforce the colonial authorities’ policies
of racial and class segregation. The city also demonstrates
the diversity of Italian architecture in Ethiopia, as state,
institutional and private interests separately sought an
appropriate formal expression for their facilities, sometimes
employing experimental construction techniques in response
to the logistical difficulties of building in such a remote
location. Altogether, Gondar offers a valuable example for
understanding the form and development of many cities
throughout Ethiopia and other former Italian colonies in
Africa.
Most of Gondar’s 14,000 Ethiopian inhabitants lived south of the
main castle complex – called the Fasil Ghebbi – where the
ridge slopes gently down toward the major market at the
southern edge of town. The Italians concentrated their
building activity north of the Fasil Ghebbi on two level
areas adjacent to each other, but separated by a significant
change in elevation. The lower area served as a commercial
district, with a wide, tree-lined street running north from
the castles, past the cinema to the prominently sited post
office. The higher area immediately to the east comprised
the governmental district, centered on two monumental
buildings for the military authorities, whose towers
commanded distant views and marked the center of power
in the new Gondar.
The Italian authorities recognized that the castle complex,
by dividing the ridge in half, served as an effective barrier
for separating the city’s neighborhoods. Ethiopian residents
were restricted to the existing districts between the Ghebbi
and market.

Yoniii May 28th, 2010, 03:11 PM ^^ That has nothing to do with ancient Gonder.
Check page 8 in that PDF file, you will see a map. Check the flags. Only Italian flags you see is in their province called Eritrea.
Ahadu May 28th, 2010, 11:35 PM Gondar village was built at the start of Portuguese colonization. They built low-grade castles for the local villagers.
Habab,
Please check your history book carefuly ------ Portuguese never journeyed to the Land of Prester John to colonize. They were not colonizers at all; rather, they were a small tight group of convicted felon trying to get a pardon from their king - King Emanuel i.e. by discovering the Land of Prester John. They were about 400 in number. Coincidently, when they arrived in Ethiopia, the country was in the middle of a religious war. Gragn Ahmad (a Somali) was purging the "Christian Land". The Portuguese ended up fighting him and managed to defeat him. King Gelawdious & Queen Elena were saved from the sward of a Somali terrorist helped by Turks. Interestingly, King Gelawudeous never took a revenge on Muslim brothers - he actually urged those who were already converted to Islam to keep their new faith. After the war, most of the Portuguese settled and fall in love with the local chicks - one of the Portuguese, for example, had 12 children (half casts) from a Gondere woman:). If we do some sort of a DNA survey, I am definitely sure we will find a trace of Portuguese blood line.
BTW: Portuguese were the first to introduce "The Wheel" made up of wood. The locals were impressed to see a bull-cart for the first time in their life.
Ethiopia has never been colonized by Portuguese!!

rasta55 December 5th, 2010, 11:21 PM I love the surrounding landscapes, the city has potential but there doesn't seem to be much development. I see some construction though.
Well, Gonder is a mountain city located on a plateau (& most likely founded to serve as a fortress capital...) which limits its relative potential for growth...And so, next door Bahar Dar (chosen the new regional capital) thrives and is drawing developers (industries, regional centers etc)...
I probably have some of the facts wrong, but I think similar situations are seen in places like Harar (ancient/mountain)- Dire Dawa (new, plains); Yirgalem (old, mountain) - Awassa (new, plains); Dessie (old, mountain) - Kombolcha (newer, relatively flatter).....And then there is Nazret/Adama which is expanding fast on the valley (benefitting from easier acces to electricity, rail/roadway, water..) & towns like Nekemte, Jimma, Debre Markos, Goba which are relatively stuck...(I wonder, what if Addis had not been located on the foothills but on top of Entoto as Menelik/Taitu initially planned)
But mountain cities like Gonder, what they lack in availability of wide-flat plains (& its developmental opportunities), they make up with stunning views of the mountain scenery, fresh air/alpine temperature, ...And therefore should make the most of it rather than pursuing & competing for what developers would think are expensive investment alternatives; which means promoting their environmental assets, offering nature enthusiasts, hikers etc.. services & accommodations...
Carver02 December 6th, 2010, 12:13 AM Thanks, Rasta55 and Yoniii.
Does someone know where Gonder University is in relation to the city? I don't think it's in the city center.
I'll be going there in a couple weeks. (In fact, I need to get my shots!)
Yoniii December 6th, 2010, 02:45 AM ^^ It will be expensive to develop areas like Gondar, but it's possible. The nature give the city a uniqueness. But making Bahir Dar the regional capital was a smart choice.

I'm not sure if the new landscaping matches the historical aspect. I would have left it natural!! Besides, there is plenty of landscaping to be done in the towncenter of Gonder anyways....

Newkids April 9th, 2011, 06:21 AM What is puzzling me is Gonder seems to be the only city in Ethiopia, which is lagging a little bit behind in development than other cities. Is there any reason to that?...
Yoniii April 9th, 2011, 08:16 PM I guess that the regional government are investing more in bahir dar, but Gondar is going through a transformation as well with new hotels popping up.
Newkids April 10th, 2011, 01:59 AM Thank you so much Yonii, LOVE all of your pictures!!!!!
