St. Paul Minnesota

Population: City - 284,037
Metro - 3,365,573
53 sq mi

St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and sits on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The smaller twin in the "Twin Cities" moniker, the larger twin, Minneapolis, borders St. Paul on the west. The city is also the seat of Ramsey County, the smallest in the state of Minnesota. St. Paul's original name was Pig's Eye Landing until 1841 when it was renamed by French priest Reverend Lucien Galtier after his favorite saint. In 1849, Minnesota was recognized as a territory and St. Paul was recognized as its capital. In 1854, St. Paul was officially incorporated as a city.

Be honest :D

Exactly!!

Minneapolis is glassy and modern whereas St. Paul is much more historic and short. You really can't compare the 2 because they differ so much. I live in St. Paul so I'm a tad partial to it.

I give it a 8.5 because it and Minneapolis only are a area that would seem to only support 1 major downtown areaor 1 major and other smaller but Minneapolis St. Paul both have major areas so its a very nice skyline

I used to prefer it to the skyline of Minneapolis. That was before Minneapolis grew up. It is still a fine skyline for a city of its size that has height limitations.

I love the St. Paul Companies building; I only wish it were taller. The Minnesota State Capitol is probably the best in the nation.

I don't think these pictures here quite do the St. Paul skyline justice. No offence, but I think something is needed from the bluffs, or coming in on 94W. In terms of showcasing the skyline, I think those angles could do a better job.

I live in Minneapolis, and I love Mpls. But think St. Paul is an absolutely beautiful city. Having said that, as skylines go, I don't think St. Paul's is particularly impressive. I gave it an 8. But the experience on the street is very different. It is very compact, with narrow streets, and narrow sidewalks. Most of the buildings come right up to the sidewalk, and when you reach a park, you almost don't see it coming until you turn the corner. This gives it a very urban , and somewhat European feel. Aside from downtown and the capital, there are many other parts of the city I love to visit, including Grand Ave., Summit Ave, the river gorge, and Swede Hollow. No to mention Como Ave and St. Anthony Park.

Few downtowns' have affected me in the way this one has. St. Paul has one of the most "European looking" central core's in the nation. If you ever get the time, or have the chance to visit it, you will see what I mean. Truly, truly outstanding.

One of the most underappreciated skylines in North America, it also makes the perfect companion to Minneapolis' larger skyline. There are some key buildings in this city, which give it a great deal of identity. I give it a 7.5/10. :)

It has a curious brown color, but I like this downtown! I'm really impressed! One of the most beauty cities I have ever seen at "Rate our skylines".

Perhaps those building will not win any design contest, but they are very nice and the conbination of all of them makes downtown St. Paul a very good place to live and work (I think).
Look the parks, monuments, downtown nice streets... Very nice.

At ArchMadness first image, I can see an skyline at the superior part of the photograph. What city is this?

"9,5/10" for this an unknown (for me) city.

You really wouldn't expect St.Paul's skyline to be extra tall, since Minneapolis is next door and seems to attract all the height. The taller buildings which are older are regal.

But isn't the density dynamite?

St. Paul's skyline is "ok", still not good enough for me. Minneapolis beats St. Paul by a mile! It needs more glassy buildings!

I really like the one you posted on Jan 4th with the Mississippi and Minnesota River valley's and the Mendota Bridge crossing. Would have been cool getting a nice large jet in the foreground landing at the airport.

Minnesota's capital has a very nice skyline for its size. I happen to like Minneapolis a bit better but there is no comparison between the two. I rate every city on its own merits. St. Paul has great charm, great architecture and a wonderful skyline for a city its size. 9/10

St. Paul is classic urban dense. Great looking urban skyline with a touch of new school to compliment the classic look! I visited there and it was a shock to see 2 cities as urban as St.Paul and Minneapolis so close! Great metro area as well!! L.G.N.M

Like this! The buildings doesn't just look like cubes and it looks good situated next to the river. A nice fade of skyline. Maybe one taller in the middle of everything would be something...

I took some photos. The first one is from the West Side bluffs, the whole downtown sits in a natural bowl surrounded by short, steep hills. There are a lot of good vantage points to photograph it but it is hard to show the whole scene because you also have the the state capitol and the cathedral on hills overlooking downtown and you can't get the whole thing in one frame. It is definitely a more impressive skyline in person.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv170/Somnifor/St%20Paul%20April%202011/stpapr201109.jpg

These are from the Capitol Heights bluff, they are left, center and right, more or less:
