Dredging for Dubai's new Dh650 million Dubai Maritime City (DMC) has begun and the first phase will be completed within one year.
The first phase involves the reclamation and building the facilities for the ship repair work,
DMC will provide world class maritime services, catering to maritime industries that are continually growing
Gulf Craft Inc is taking part in the project as an investor in the first phase of DMC.
The mission to emerge as a supplier of state-of-the-art pleasure boats and yachts to local and international customers, has now been translated into a reality
The maritime city, to be built between Port Rashid and Dubai Dry Docks, will cater to a diverse international maritime clientele and will focus on national, regional and international companies and institutions involved in maritime related business in six areas — marine services, management, product marketing, research and education, recreation, ship design and manufacturing.
The maritime city will have a separate set of rules and regulations and this will be drafted through consultations with prospective participants in the maritime city.
DMC has the potential to host an array of shipping services including classifiers, onshore and offshore caterers and suppliers. Each service can operate as a separate entity but in close proximity to their prime avenues of business.
Ship repair and maintenance services will also be headquartered within this maritime project.
Marine management services ranging from cargo, vessel and life insurance agencies to legal businesses specialising in consultation, legal advice and marine domain lawyers will find DMC the perfect base for their operations.
The marine related marketing includes exhibitions and trade shows, and hence media information groups will also find DMC an ideal venue.
Marine research and education will receive a big boost in the form of a 'marine academy' within DMC, where curricula like marine engineering, marine transportation, naval science, maritime operations and technology, logistics and intermodal transportation and pilot and navigation simulations will be promoted by DMC in the future.
Ship design and manufacturing companies will also find a permanent base at DMC.
Builders and designers of yachts, traditional ships and recreational boats will be based here along with ship repair and maintenance services and ship modification companies.

Dubai Maritime City exhibits at Cannes Boat Show
The Dubai Maritime City stand at the Festival Internationale de la Plaisance, being held in Cannes from 8-13 September, will showcase the range of services and facilities being offered on this iconic maritime development according to Amer Ali, Project Manager, Dubai Maritime City.

'We have a range of facilities and services that relate specifically to the leisure, boat and yachting sector. We have already attracted major international names in yacht manufacture to register with as our location and our offering make it more viable for them to locate their businesses here. Also, Dubai's numerous waterfront properties have created a growing market for our services and facilities. Boat manufacturers and retailers are already interested in the rapidly increasing demand within the region.'

Dubai Maritime City is part of Dubai's Ports Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), and is linked to Dubai Ports Authority, Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority, Nakheel, Dubai Customs, and several other business units. PCFC is headed by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman.

DMC will be a 195-hectare manmade peninsula, and will create an iconic, multidimensional maritime center providing a unique world-class environment for the global maritime community.

The first development of its kind, DMC will provide a hub for six large and diverse sectors: marine marketing, management, services, recreation, education, ship design and manufacture. Every element of infrastructure required by these sectors will be provided. At present reclamation work for DMC is being carried out and the Master Plan is being finalized. The project will be developed in phases.

Four distinct areas are planned within Dubai Maritime City. The commercial area will include a harbor, offices, banks, hotels, showrooms, support services, restaurants and leisure areas and a flexible exhibition site. DMC will support the iconic waterfront properties in Dubai such as the Palm Islands, and The World by providing berthing for yachts, a maritime mall and repair and maintenance facilities. The leisure area will provide recreational facilities and retail outlets. There will be a dedicated section for repair and maintenance with a dockyard, ship lifts, state of the art equipment, warehouses and workshops. Maritime education, research and development facilities will be located in the academy area. Reclamation for DMC will be complete in 2005. The facility will be ready by end 2006.

Both Jebel Ali port and Port Rashid in Dubai are managed by the same "Dubai Port And Free Zone" and the same group is behind Nakheel.

Jebel Ali port is a comercial and container terminal port mostly for goods transitin Dubai and serves to Jebel Ali Free Zone companies, while Port Rashid
serves to Dubai companies. Actually there were words that Port Rashid would stop serving businesses and would turn to serve tourism and the Maritime City serve nothing to comerce related business.

However there are multi billions plan to expand the Jebel Ali port.

Dubai Maritime City takes part in Waterfront 2005

11 May 2005

DUBAI — Dubai Maritime City yesterday participated in Waterfront 2005 Dubai, the Middle East’s leading conference that focuses on the future of global coastline development. A spokesperson from Dubai Maritime City presented a detailed overview of the world’s most comprehensive maritime complex.

The presentation included a summary on the magnitude of the world’s first maritime cluster that will be located on a 216-hectare man-made peninsula on Dubai’s coastline, aimed at serving the needs of a diverse global maritime audience. It was also emphasised that Dubai Maritime City will add a new dimension to Dubai, as its creation will satisfy a growing need for a multi-dimensional maritime centre in the region. By offering world-class infrastructure, services and regulations, Dubai Maritime City will create a unique specialised environment that will promote the networking and integration of leading maritime companies in one destination.

Commenting on the importance of the event to the Middle East’s business community and the maritime industries around the world, the spokesperson added: “We are delighted to be here with other “mega project’ developers to discuss and further our shared goal of creating sustainable and visionary business models that are placing Dubai’s waterfront at the cutting edge of global commerce and reinforcing its potential to be a world-class destination for the maritime community.’

“As the first development of its kind, Dubai Maritime City will provide a strategic location for seven main sectors: maritime management, maritime services, maritime retail and recreation, maritime education and research, ship repair and maintenance, yacht repair and maintenance, and yacht manufacture. The first phase of the project will be ready for occupation by the end of 2006,’ he said.
Waterfront 2005 Dubai was opened by Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai’s Land Department.

Having brought Dubai into the information and digital age with projects like Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, the emirate is looking to its past for another future area of growth with the creation of Dubai Maritime City - an integrated state-of-the-art development that will provide every element of infrastructure required by key marine and maritime related industries.

Like many of the recent commercial developments in Dubai, Dubai Maritime City will create a cluster of like-minded companies, with six large and diverse sectors having been identified for the facility: marine services; marine management; product marketing; marine research and education; recreation; ship design and manufacturing. It is also destined to become an ideal location for international trade seminars, exhibitions, conferences and symposia related to the maritime industry.

“As an iconic, multidimensional maritime centre, Dubai Maritime City is committed to serving the needs of the regional and global maritime community,” stated DMC project manager Amer Ali. “By offering world-class infrastructure, services and regulations, we will create a unique specialised environment that will promote the networking and integration of maritime players.”

With coastal land scarce in Dubai, the decision was taken to reclaim land from the sea to house Dubai Maritime City. In August 2003, dredging work began to create a 25 million square feet man-made peninsula between Dubai’s Port Rashid terminal and Dubai Drydocks - with the peninsula connected to the mainland by a causeway.

Utilising similar technology to that used to create The Palm, dredging began on a 24-hour basis, with the peninsula first breaking the surface on December 1, 2003. An estimated 30 million cubic metres of dredged seabed sand and 2.5 million cubic metres of rock are being used to create the peninsula, breakwaters and other associated infrastructure.

The development has also required the relocation of the Dubai Drydocks entrance channel and, consequently, the main breakwater at the dry docks had be extended by about 500 metres - creating a total breakwater length of about 2,140 metres.

Following the completion of the reclamation works, construction will begin on the rest of the infrastructure in phases, with the facility scheduled to open for business in 2006. Once complete, Dubai Maritime City will have four key areas – a commercial area, a leisure area, a repair area and a research and academy area.

The commercial area will include a harbour, offices for maritime-related businesses, banks, support services, restaurants and a flexible exhibition site. The leisure area will include berthing for yachts and a museum, while the repair area will comprise a dockyard, ship supply outlets, a ship repair area, a ship building area, and a maritime retail area. Key components of the repair yard will be two brand new ship lifts and state of the art equipment, with the repair and ship building side of the business to be expanded to include yacht and dhow repair, in addition to steel work.

Marine research & education in the region will receive a huge boost in the form of a marine academy within Dubai Maritime City, while an oceanographic research centre and naval history museum will add further educational value.

While futuristic in outlook, Dubai Maritime City draws upon the emirate’s long and proud maritime history, and will expand the scope of business for local, regional and international maritime companies already operating in Dubai.

The city emerged as a trading entrepot in 1833 when Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti began the Al Maktoum family’s rule of Dubai. Realising the potential of Dubai Creek’s natural harbour, he established a trading port along the banks of the natural water inlet that splits the city into Deira and Bur Dubai.

By the turn of the 20th Century, traders were re-routing goods through Dubai to avoid the high customs elsewhere in the region, with Persia’s principal port, Lingah, particularly hard hit. To take advantage of the influx of merchants, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum established Dubai as a free trade port, abolished import and export tariffs, and began a systematic programme to encourage Lingah's leading merchants to relocate.

He offered free land and personal guarantees of protection in his peaceful trading haven and the economy grew as smaller traders followed the more prominent merchants and resettled in Dubai, which quickly established itself as the Gulf’s leading entry port and the centre of the pearling trade.

Another major milestone in Dubai’s maritime history came in 1976 when the late Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid, gave instructions for an ambitious project - the construction of the world’s largest man-made harbour at Jebel Ali. When completed in 1979, Jebel Ali Port ranked alongside the Great Wall of China and the Hoover Dam as the only three man-made objects that could be seen from space.

With Jebel Ali firmly established as one of the world’s busiest ports and Dubai as a global import and re-export centre, Dubai Maritime City is looking to build on the well-established maritime traditions of the emirate and take them into the future.

“An advantage of DMC is that an array of diverse marine service companies can operate as separate entities, but in close proximity to their prime avenues of business,” Mr Ali explained. “Dubai Maritime City has been positioned as a facility that will develop and expand existing maritime markets, forming a bridge between overseas and regional maritime companies. It will also offer the benefits of clustering, allowing shipping related services to be closer to their partners and customers.”

Dubai Maritime City will enhance the city’s reputation as a maritime destination and senior officials from DMC and the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) have recently created a joint initiative to develop a strategic plan to devise and organise exhibitions, conferences and events that centre around the increasingly high profile maritime industry.

DWTC Director General, Helal Saeed Khalfan Al Marri, explained: “With Dubai’s growing status as the commercial and maritime hub of the Middle East, we felt the time was right to explore ways of creating a series of world-class events revolving around the marine industry, that will firmly establish the emirate as one of the prime maritime destinations and a world leader in maritime development.

“Our experience and success in organising the Dubai International Boat Show has clearly demonstrated that the marine industry in Dubai is set for tremendous growth. Rapid marina development in the UAE is fuelling demand for new boats. Ongoing projects that include Dubai Marina, Dubai Festival City and the massive Palm Island and World projects off the coast of Dubai will add significantly to the number of marina berths available.

“By working together with Dubai Maritime City we are looking to capitalise on our respective areas of expertise and build events that address key sectors of the industry including commercial shipping, shipbuilding, ship design, leisure boating, marine management and marine services.”

With new companies signing up to join Dubai Maritime City on an almost daily basis, the emirate’s future as a regional shipping and marine hub looks set for even further expansion, consolidating yet another commercial sector in the leading business city in the Middle East.

Well we knows that wrong by why nit pick. ( Many man made objects can be seen from "space", freeways tracks of lands cleared, and so. Even in 1979.

When completed in 1979, Jebel Ali Port ranked alongside the Great Wall of China and the Hoover Dam as the only three man-made objects that could be seen from space.

Sure we already knew this but

Dubai Maritime City to house the first ship registry office in the Middle East

Dubai Maritime City has announced that it will house the first ever ship registry office in the Middle East aimed at a creating a significant boost to the maritime community in the region

http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/8/16668-Amer.jpg
Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime Cit

The registry office will work in conjunction with the government in establishing the standards that ships will be required to maintain, which will coincide with international standards. The registry office will operate on an international level by accepting national and foreign ownership of vessels.

'This marks a major step for the maritime community in the Middle East as it sets new benchmarks of excellence for the industry,' said Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime City. 'The primary function of the registry will be to maintain the specific requirements of the government related to the ship owning company or the ship itself.

As the first purpose built maritime cluster, we are pleased to be involved in the setting of groundbreaking new industry standards to benefit maritime businesses in the region. We aim to ensure that the highest possible standards are maintained to make it attractive for ship owners and liner operators to register with us,' he added.

The ship registrar keeps a record of all vessels registered under its flag with details of the owners and shareholders of the owning company, the ship's particulars, classification details, all statutory and international trading
certificates, record of ISM and ISPS compliance and any registered mortgages on the ship.

An active ship register with a good support system will attract ship-owners to register their vessels under that particular flag. This will in turn attract ship managers, brokers, banks and ship-brokers and ship finance institutions and other maritime related players to the region, thus helping in the growth of the maritime industry locally.

Dubai already offers numerous advantages for those setting up their businesses here. Ship owners will be able to take advantage of these benefits, which will definitely give them an edge over ships registered in other flag states.

Omnia to redevelop Dubai Maritime City website

Omnia, the Dubai Media City-based integrated marketing and design solutions consultancy, has been appointed by Dubai Maritime City, the multi-dimensional maritime centre which is creating a unique world-class environment for the global maritime community, to redevelop its website.

Omnia is to review the existing website and devise a forward strategy that will initially involve a re-design of the site and lead to the development of an on-site community for Dubai Maritime City residents and partners.

'We believe a phased approach to the project will enable the site to simultaneously be re-developed while catering to Dubai Maritime City's immediate needs,'

said Adam Booth, Managing Director, Omnia. 'Components in the on-site community will also be released in a phased manner'.

The project is divided into four main phases. The first phase will be informative and involve the total re-design and updating of the site. The second phase will concentrate on driving sales and will be highly interactive with investors and partners. Phase three, the foundation of the community portal, will focus on development of an intranet and extranet while the final phase, a second stage community site, will include several interactive elements such as a user portal, classified advertisements, promotions, email list, message boards, calendars, news letter and web links.

'As Dubai Maritime City will be a leading industry community it is essential our web-site involves all our stakeholders,' said Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime City, 'Omnia presented a strategic, organised and creative plan that met and exceeded our expectations'.

Omnia has a growing Middle East portfolio of clients, which includes Royal Jet, the Abu Dhabi-based luxury aviation travel provider, the General Civil Aviation Authority, Dubai Municipality, Sony, Empost and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC).

DUBAI MARITIME CITY SITE 60% COMPLETE

Sunday, 29 January 2006

THE reclamation of the 216 hectare Dubai Maritime City site, claimed to be the world’s most comprehensive maritime complex, is now 60% complete and the first buildings could be rising on the artificial peninsular within months..

Project Manager Amer Ali said: “Dubai has witnessed the creation of numerous commercial and residential developments at a phenomenal rate of growth over the past few years – but the challenge set for Dubai Maritime City is to create not just a real estate project but a thriving business community for the maritime industry.”

He added: "This development is driven by the needs of the international community for a hub that is dedicated to providing every element of infrastructure required by key marine and maritime-related industries and services. Dubai's rich legacy of sea-going traditions and its enviable geographical location at the focal point of the two hemispheres makes it the perfect location for such an undertaking."

The facility is intended to provide a globally strategic location for seven main industry sectors - maritime management, maritime services, maritime retail and recreation, maritime education and research, ship repair and maintenance, yacht repair and maintenance. When complete, Dubai Maritime City is expected to serve the needs of a diverse global marine and maritime audience – comprising industrial precinct, showrooms, commercial towers, development plots, a research & education facility, a marina, hotels, retail and residential.

it looks like it is dumping the sand somewhere in the sea

actually, this island is likely to be bigger than we all expect

when i look at them doing their work i would say 1/2 of it has been reclaimed as of now

since may the size has increased dramatically, it's already quite a huge island and now i see it will become much much bigger

wonder how long it will take them to reclaim the whole thing now?!

Dubai Maritime City construction on track
Staff Report

Dubai: Dubai Maritime City has reported significant progress in the construction of its new breakwaters in order to provide the Project and the adjacent Dubai Drydocks with new access channels and harbour basins.

The breakwaters project, which began in April 2003, is now 90 per cent complete and well on track for the final deadline of April 2006.

In addition to this, 92 per cent of the rockworks have been finished and the 25-year old breakwater has been removed, using a mixture of demolished and new rock material to create the new breakwater structures.

"We are pleased with the significant progress that has been made on the project and we are confident that we are able to meet the April 2006 deadline," said Amer Ali, project manager of Dubai Maritime City.

"With the breakwater and rockworks construction having begun nearly two years ago, the formation of the peninsula is now clearly visible and is taking shape.

Construction of the breakwaters consists of 4.4 million cubic metres of rock and 38,000 units of 15 tonne concrete armour. The removal of the breakwaters consists of 1.25 million cubic metres of rock and 27,500 units of 15 tonne concrete armour.

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will serve as the world's most comprehensive maritime complex located on a 216-hectare man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and the Dubai Dry Docks, and surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Dubai Maritime City will be a 216-hectare manmade peninsula and will create an iconic multi-dimensional maritime centre providing a unique world-class environment for the global maritime community.

Dubai Maritime City will be the world's largest maritime development and will be located on a manmade peninsula measuring 25 million square feet.

The first development of its kind, Dubai Maritime City will offer world-class facilities to maritime businesses in the region and worldwide.

It will be the hub for six large and diverse sectors: marine marketing, management, services, recreation, education, ship design and manufacture.

Dubai Maritime City starts 3.5 km quay walls construction

Dubai Maritime City has signed a contract with Van Oord/Belhasa Six JV for the construction of 3.5 km of quay walls with water depths of up to 10m at high tide.

Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime City.

The completion of the quay wall is expected to take 20 months, and will be conducted in a phased manner starting with the industrial precinct. Other construction phases of the industrial precinct includes preparation of the ship lift area, which is ongoing. The quay wall of the industrial precinct will be finalized by the end of the year when other phases will follow.

The area is cordoned by walls and is planned around two separate basins around 12 to 14 metres deep. The first one will be a rectangular shipyard basin measuring approximately 600m long by 450m wide. Berthing facilities are provided to the North, South and East of the site and two shiplifts of 6000 tonne capacity and 3000 tonne capacity will be provided to the West of the basin.

'The quay walls mark a new phase in the Dubai Maritime City project and we are pleased with the rapid progress of construction'

said Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime City. 'The peninsula is now taking shape and the quay walls are an important step forward in the overall construction of the industrial precinct.

A slipway or boat ramp, will be provided in the South East corner while a finger pier, for the removal of smaller boats, will be located at the East end of the site. In addition, there will also be sufficient access and storage to the rear of the quay walls for equipment and materials to be used in boat repair and manufacture.

The second basin will be oval, measuring approximately 400m long and 300m at its widest point. The quay walls will be provided at the edge of the marina with a water depth of between 5 and 9 metres. Whilst the basins are linked by an access channel approximately 500 m long.

All quay walls have been designed as pre-cast concrete block on a rock foundation, with the exception of the half a kilometer stretch of area surrounding the ship lifts, which have been designed as sheet piled quay walls in order to accommodate the shiplift mechanisms.

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will serve as the world's most comprehensive maritime complex located on a 216-hectare man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and the Dubai Dry Docks, and surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

87 per cent of reclamation work completed in Dubai Maritime City

Dubai Maritime City announced that reclamation work for its man-made peninsula has reached 87% of its total reclamation work, in order to meet the January 2007 deadline.
United Arab Emirates: 1 hour, 37 minutes ago

Dubai Maritime City.

Infrastructure work is expected to start in a few months on the reclaimed area and will be completed in stages.

The total volume of reclaimed (dredged sand) material is now over 30 million cubic meters spread over a land area of approximately 216 hectares. The reclamation procedure started in April 2003; this is undertaken using sea-going trailer suction dredgers to recover sand, which is either 'bottom dumped' or 'rainbowed' by pumping sand from dredgers, or discharged by pipeline into its final resting place.

Commenting on the level of progress of the project, Amer Ali, Project Manager of Dubai Maritime City said:

'Reclamation work for Dubai Maritime City is well underway and runs parallel to the ongoing construction of the peninsula's breakwaters. The depth of sand placed for reclamation is 12 meters from seabed level to finished ground level at +4/+6 meters, which accounts to a total of 18 meters in total.'

Three or four compaction rigs are used across the newly reclaimed land to compress the sand. These work incessantly using two 20 meter long steel vibrator probes which are lowered into the ground in order to achieve compression.

Ground improvement works began last December following technical trials to verify treatment methods down to 18 meters, below the finished level of the reclamation area.

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will serve as the world's most comprehensive maritime complex located on a 216-hectare man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and the Dubai Dry Docks, and surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Dubai Maritime casts the first Quay Wall block

Dubai Maritime casts the first Quay Wall block

This procedure was carried out for the first time with concrete produced at the project site, using the site's batching facilities, and marks significant progress in the development of the Dubai Maritime City industrial precinct - the first phase of the overall project development.

This is the first step in the construction of the quay wall of the industrial precinct and includes the preparation of the ship lift area which will be finalized by the end of the year when other phases will follow. The 20-month construction process for the entire quay wall will require the casting of over 10,000 blocks to form the 3.5 km quay wall.

This is a vital stage in the project and is testimony of the way Dubai Maritime City is now taking shape. When completed, Dubai Maritime City will serve as the world's most comprehensive maritime complex located on a 216-hectare man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and the Dubai Dry Docks, and surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Current construction stage includes the completion of the mobilization of the marine equipment and will commence block placing by mid May 2006. The Quay Wall at Dubai Maritime City will form the ship yard docking and wet berth areas, all of which are critical to the successful completion of the project.

All quay walls have been designed as pre-cast concrete block on a rock foundation, with the exception of the half a kilometer stretch of area surrounding the ship lifts, which have been designed as sheet piled quay walls in order to accommodate the shiplift mechanisms.

Work continues at Dubai Maritime City for manufacturing Jadaf Dubai's new shiplifts

Dubai Maritime City, the world's largest and the most comprehensive maritime complex in the world, has announced the launch of manufacturing process of new shiplifts of Jadaf Dubai -- one of the oldest ship repair yard in the Arabian Gulf - which is currently located at Dubai Creek.

The shift of Jadaf Dubai to Dubai Maritime City reflects the distinction of the Maritime City as a prestigious location and is expected to provide a major impetus to regional maritime trade.

The relocation will also facilitate a number of companies operational at Jadaf Dubai to expand their operations. With its direct access to sea, vessels calling at Dubai Maritime City will not be limited by size, as is the case at Al Jadaf Dubai's current location where vessels are restricted because of bridge crossings.

Dubai Maritime City is also going full steam ahead with setting up the new shiplift facilities, which will be commissioned by March 2007. Construction of the support structures for the new facilities is currently under way.

To be manufactured by world-renowned shiplift specialist company Hydraudyne Rexroth, the City will incorporate two shiplifts side-by-side. One of the shiplifts will be 90m long and 25m wide and designed to lift vessels up to 3000 tonnes while the other will be 140m long and 30m wide and designed to lift boats of up to 6000 tonnes.

In his comments, Mr. Hamed Mohammed Bin Lahej, General Manager, Jadaf Dubai, said: 'The relocation of Al Jadaf Dubai, one of the oldest ship repair facility in the region, will provide a major boost to our iconic project. With their expertise in docking and undocking of ships, coupled with the commissioning of the new shiplifts, we will be in an enviable position to cater to bigger vessels.'

Both the shiplifts will be capable of 14m vertical travel and the platforms and vessels shall be raised and lowered by a series of winches and steel ropes along the length of the shiplifts.

He added: 'The relocation of Al Jadaf Dubai to Dubai Maritime City is indeed a significant milestone for us and is in line with our objectives to have easy access, conformity and fulfillment of our industry requirements. The decision was taken after several years of feasibility study. We are confident that this relocation will give our business partners at Al Jadaf Dubai a unique opportunity to adopt a new practical policy in line with the tremendous growth witnessed in Dubai.'

He said: 'Since our establishment in 1979, we have accomplished substantial achievements in terms of quantity and quality which put Dubai on the international plan of ship manufacturing and maintenance and we wish to continue on our growth path from our new address. With enhanced sea access, the relocation will boost our business in a big way, coupled with the proximity to our sister business unit - the Dubai Dry Docks.'

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will be the world's biggest and the most comprehensive maritime complex spread across 216 hectares of man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and Dubai Dry Docks, and will be surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Maritime City structural deal

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 19 May 2007

Whitby and Bird has been appointed as structural engineer for a five-tower project in Dubai Maritime City (DMC).

Maritime Centre, which has been designed by Miami-based architect B&A, will form the focal point of the offshore project and is the first collection of buildings to be developed. Turner Construction is the project manager.

"The contract includes structural, civil, MEP and fire engineering on five commercial towers," said Peyman Mohajer, regional director, Whitby and Bird.

Built on a common podium of five floors, which will be used for car parking, the towers will range from 23 to 34 storeys and will include one basement.

The project will also include a ‘creek', which will annex the development.

Construction Works in Dubai Maritime City
On Schedule

The City’s Six-lane, 1.2 kilometres long causeway fully complete to connect the mega project with Dubai

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7746/imagemu7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Development and construction works of Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre, and member of Dubai World Group of companies, are progressing apace, with the six-lane causeway connecting the mega project to Dubai now fully complete and finished on time.

In addition, 50 per cent of the planned industrial precinct (managed by JADAF Dubai) in the Maritime City is now complete and operational. This landmark has been passed three months ahead of the original Dubai Maritime City development program schedule.

The progress in the development of the industrial precinct is the latest milestone to be reached in Dubai Maritime City. It is now physically accessible to traffic via a 1.2 km long, six-lane causeway which was completed on time and links Dubai Maritime City to Dubai itself.

“We are pleased with the significant progress that has been made on the project so far. One of our proudest accomplishments to date is that we have been able to achieve this ahead of schedule,” said Mr Amer Ali, the CEO of Dubai Maritime City.

A number of other infrastructure developments in the industrial precinct are also currently well underway, with the 3,000 tonne ship lift operational and the larger 6,000 tonne ship lift standing at more than 70 per cent completion. More than half of the warehouses and workshops are also operational, and when completed the precinct will have the capacity to berth more than 80 vessels.

A significant event for Dubai Maritime City is also the establishment of Dubai Maritime City Authority. The Authority was established pursuant to a law passed by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. This law established Dubai Maritime City as the official independent maritime authority and regulatory body in Dubai, with jurisdiction over maritime operations and activities.

“Dubai Maritime City will play a pivotal role in centralizing operations and providing regulation in this - sometimes fragmented - global industry. The full value chain of maritime services offered will yield great revenues for Dubai and the UAE as it will ensure more efficient operations and sustainability,” Mr Ali added.

Dubai Maritime City to construct UAE’s first specialized Maritime Museum

One of Middle East’s most comprehensive maritime exhibits to play key role in the development and preservation of UAE’s rich maritime heritage

September 20, 2007

http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/5065/mcca0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Dubai Maritime City (DMC), the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre, has announced plans to construct and operate the UAE’s first specialized maritime museum, in a move that will see the creation of one of the most comprehensive maritime exhibits in the Middle East. The Museum will be located in the Academic Quarter of the Maritime City, and will play a key role in contributing to the development and preservation of the UAE’s rich cultural and maritime heritage.

Preliminary plans reveal that the 4,000 square metre museum will provide graphic displays, artefacts, multi-media tools and demonstrations, and contain exhibits such as marine life, history of the region, boating and pearling records, Arab navigation technologies, and other major marine-related industries.

“The museum will be a celebration, not only of the region’s rich maritime heritage, but also of the current and future technological developments related to the maritime sector in which Dubai plays such a key part. On completion, this Museum will be one of the largest Maritime Museums in the Middle East, and will become a must see attraction for anyone residing in, or visiting, Dubai and the surrounding emirates,” said Ali Al-Daboos, Chief Operating Officer, DMC.

“It is our goal to add more value to the global maritime community by creating a prestigious, and integrated, state-of-the-art development that will provide complete infrastructure, services and regulations for the international maritime industry. By including the Museum in our plans, we are demonstrating that we are not only providing the infrastructure, but we are also trying to put a soul into the city,” Al-Daboos added.

On completion, the museum will form an essential link between the industrial, residential and commercial users of Dubai Maritime City, with the more casual visitors, whether international tourists or local residents. It is only one of the planned educational facilities to be incorporated in the City, as the dedicated Academic Quarter will also feature an academy that will provide maritime training and research. Other quarters within the Maritime City will include the Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, the Maritime Centre, a Marina District, and the industrial quarter – operated by Jadaf Dubai.

The museum is the latest in a string of announcements for the multi-purpose maritime centre, as a number of other developments in the project progress ahead of schedule. The six-lane causeway connecting the mega project to Dubai is now fully complete, while around 50 per cent of the planned industrial precinct in the City is now complete and operational.

“We are proud to build a museum that will certainly join the ranks of distinguished maritime museums all around the world. It will become another drawing card for Dubai Maritime City, adding to the many benefits of living and working in the city, which already include a strategically important location, world class infrastructure, free zone benefits, responsive government support, a tax free business environment and an effective port structure,” Al-Daboos concluded.

Dubai Maritime City to build academic centre for maritime science
http://www.gowealthy.com/images/news/news_2912_2_57.jpg

Dubai Maritime City (DMC), the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and a member of the Dubai World Group of companies, has commenced negotiations with the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) to construct an academic centre for maritime science in the Academic Quarter of the Maritime City. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the two parties to inaugurate the joint maritime academy strategy to discuss mutual collaboration in order to build sustainable capacity in maritime education, and to establish a task force to conduct and complete a feasibility study for the project.

Amer Ali, CEO, Dubai Maritime City, said, “The shortage of qualified manpower in the maritime industry today is of enormous concern, as the shortage affects the seagoing, management, educational and other crucial components of the industry. To address this situation, it is our goal to build a state-of-the-art institute that is built around the needs of the global maritime industry in the 21st century.”

On completion, the Maritime Education University will be a fully comprehensive education, training and research institute for maritime science and will play a key role in the creation of a pool of professional manpower for the global maritime industry. An initial proposal reveals that the University will offer an array of full-time and short courses, covering at least ten disciplines such as maritime law; maritime engineering management; IT in maritime; logistics; environment management; ship management and operation; ship building management; ocean energy technology; among others. Spread over 27,000 sq m area, the University will also be affiliated with a research and development (R&D) institute to assist doctorate students with their studies.

Dubai Maritime City.

The new phase consists of the expansion of service networks such as fire, telecommunications, water, district cooling, electricity, wastewater pipelines, access roads, supporting civil infrastructure needs and landscaping works. The final phase of the development is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

"Dubai Maritime City will integrate all essential amenities of a self-sustaining community designed especially for the international maritime industry. We are now seeing DMC take shape as we start the final phase of the project involving the infrastructure development. Upon completion, Dubai will be home to a prestigious, state-of-the-art facility that will cater to all the requirements of the global maritime community," said Amer Ali, CEO of Dubai Maritime City.

The infrastructure development will also include the construction of highways and local road networks and associated infrastructure, such as street lighting, traffic signals, signs, road marking and landscape works. The main roads are three-lane dual carriageways, with minor roads being either two-lane dual carriageways or single-lane carriageways. The total length of the roads is approximately 12.834 kilometres.

The structural work includes four electrical sub-stations and six pocket stations; a pumping station for irrigation and fire fighting; a lifting station for sewerage; 35 inspection chambers for district cooling; and 67 branch chambers for district cooling. Currently, work on district cooling, sewerage pipe line and water facilities is in progress.

On completion, DMC will encompass Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, the Maritime Centre, an Academic Quarter, a Marina District, and the industrial quarter managed by Jadaf Dubai. The DMC will also showcase the UAE's first National Maritime Museum, a range of iconic infrastructure, and the Gulf region's largest ship lift for ship repair and maintenance. Moreover, DMC offers investors attractive incentives such as free-zone benefits, responsive government support, a tax-free business environment and an effective port structure.

First phase of Dubai Maritime City’s commercial and residential districts completely sold out

Brisk sales performance of world's largest maritime project exceeds expectations

November 25, 2007 http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/9978/dmcprojectxw4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and a member of the Dubai World Group of Companies, has announced that it has recently sold out the first phase plots of the massive maritime complex’s commercial and residential districts to leading international developers and contractors.

"The sales performance of the first phase exceeded our expectations; with the huge response owing to the huge value of the project in terms of its creativity and excellence, as well as being the first of its kind in the region and in the world. We are pleased to see the project steadily realising its economic potential, which is even more proof of this maritime city’s success," said Amer Ali, CEO, Dubai Maritime City.

Work on the various residential and commercial projects within the Maritime City will commence in the near future, with developers required to secure green building certification for their projects in line with the development policies and strict environmental standards of Dubai Maritime City. The key focus of the green building design will include energy consumption conservation measures such as reduced use of non-renewable sources; reduced production of waste pollutants; maximized opportunities for passive ventilation and cooling; and enhanced indoor environmental air quality.

The first and second phase of Dubai Maritime City’s construction has been completed on schedule, with the 1.2 kilometre six-lane causeway connecting the mega project to Dubai fully complete, while around 50 per cent of the industrial precinct in the City is now operational, and managed by Jadaf Dubai.

Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and a member of the Dubai World Group of companies, has announced that it has today (Thursday, November 29, 2007) taken a UAE media delegation on an aerial tour of the world’s largest marine development, which is currently progressing ahead of schedule in its third and final phase of construction.

The activity was organised by Dubai Maritime City to provide journalists with a glimpse into the scale and intricacies of the landmark project’s construction, which has generated widespread interest because of its first-of-its-kind integrated maritime concept. The aerial tour covered the entire length and width of the project, and highlighted the rapid progress of the Maritime City’s key infrastructure facilities.

"Dubai Maritime City is now certainly taking shape as we have moved ahead with the final phase of construction, and from an aerial perspective it is clear to see the integration of all the project’s components. As the project progresses, it is clear that this will be one of the region’s most important maritime developments, and has the potential to transform Dubai into one of the world’s top maritime clusters,” said Amer Ali, CEO, Dubai Maritime City.

The project is currently in its final development phase, which involves the expansion of the services network such as electricity, fire, water and telecommunication facilities. The six-lane causeway connecting the mega project to Dubai is also fully complete, while the Industrial precinct is now 50 per cent complete and operational.

Dubai Maritime City has also recently finalised a number of projects within its different precincts. For instance plans were recently announced to construct the UAE’s first National Maritime Museum in the Academic Quarter, which is primed to be one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime museums in the Middle East.

A memorandum of understanding has also been signed with the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) to construct the Maritime Education University; a centre for maritime science that will also be located also in the Academic Quarter. The Gulf region's largest computerised ship lift has also been recently installed in the Industrial precinct, which will allow ships of up 6,000 tonnes to be docked in Dubai for repair and maintenance.

Moreover, the project's Master Plan also mandates all developers to obtain green building certification, ensuring Dubai Maritime City's strict environmental compliance and long-term sustainability.

On completion, DMC will encompass Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, the Maritime Centre, an Academic Quarter, a Marina District, and the industrial quarter managed by Jadaf Dubai. DMC will also showcase the UAE’s first National Maritime Museum, a range of iconic infrastructure, and the Gulf region’s largest ship lift for ship repair and maintenance. i personally know people building the shipping facilities here and they seemed to have designed the project and approved, started land reclamation before they asked if it was adequete for ships! apparently not, there are hardly any or poor facilities to accomodate ships and their high needs! It is already over-budget, and they know it will be behind schedule. The shipping port-areas need to be redesigned and roads and infrastructure needs to be rectified as well! this place is a mess!

Dubai Maritime City to launch first phase of Marina Berths

January 16th , 2008
Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and member of the Dubai World Group, has outlined plans to launch the first phase of its new marina berth project in time for the 16th Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS), being held from March 11-15, 2008.

The new berthing facilities, to be located in the commercial district of Dubai Maritime City, will enable the world’s largest maritime centre to address the growing market demand on berthing spaces in Dubai, with more than 30 to 50,000 boats and yachts expected in the next five years.

A marine consultant is currently conducting a pre-construction wave study to ensure the safety of up to 50 marina berths, which add considerable capacity to what is already one of the largest marinas in Dubai and the region with open sea access.

Amer Ali, CEO of Dubai Maritime City, noted: “This is a huge project to achieve, especially in only nine weeks, and it reflects our commitment to sustain the ongoing growth of the UAE’s maritime sector. Dubai is expected to become a leading maritime hub in the near future, and we at Dubai Maritime City are helping to develop the infrastructure so that this recognition can be achieved as fast as possible.”

“By focusing on every detail, such as ensuring that there is enough mooring space, we are pushing hard to find solutions that cater to the requirements of what will become one of the world’s top maritime destinations,” Ali added.

The new berth project will also encompasses a cluster of multi-functional areas ranging from community and destination shopping quarters, hotel, marinas and ferry transit facilities.

“With the third phase of construction well underway, we are confident that many of the international visitors to the Boat Show will be impressed by the rapid progress and many benefits offered by Dubai Maritime City,” Ali concluded.

as I undestood, the maritime city aims to attact all the companies doing shipping in the world, and maritime logistics am i right?

SO, they build offices for this companies, ok.

then, the industrial zone seems too small for me...where the ship should discharge the containers?? and Dubai have Jebel Ali, so this is just for ...what? dont get that

then, why do they build a marina in front of office towers? with all the marina apartement, not menteioning the palms, the lagoons, the world ect...who is going to leave the boat here??

Dubai Maritime City Authority has announced plans to establish a specialized institute that will provide boat sailing training and licensing for owners of leisure boats and yachts of all sizes.

The new institute will support the development of the UAE's maritime sector by encouraging boat owners and users to adopt the highest standards of safety on the water.

The institute will provide owners of boats and yachts with boat sailing and registration licenses, in addition to offering boat sailing courses. The Dubai Maritime City Campus will accommodate the institute, which is an area that comprises integrated state-of-the-art educational institutions that adopt the best international standards and offers easy sea access.

'This is the first institute of its kind in the region, which has been launched as part of our continuous efforts to provide high-level services and facilities to meet the rapidly growing demands of the UAE's maritime sector. The new institute is one of the highlights of Dubai Maritime City; and will ensure that this development is an integrated maritime centre at all levels,'said Captain Majid Al Shamsi, Institute Project Manager.

'Through the institute, everyone in the UAE will have an opportunity to obtain licenses for the sailing of leisure boats and yachts,' added Al Shamsi.

Dubai Maritime City has recently commenced the first phase of the project, which includes preparation and planning; with services expected to begin from June 2008.

Press Release:

Dubai Maritime City Authority to handle registration and licensing of maritime businesses in Dubai

May 7th, 2008
Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and member of the Dubai World Group, has recently announced that registration and licensing of all maritime businesses in Dubai, which was previously the responsibility of Dubai's Department of Economic Development (DED), will now be handled by the Dubai Maritime City Authority as part of initiatives to provide a centralised point of access for all maritime-related activities in the emirate.

Under the new setup, Dubai Maritime City Authority will facilitate various maritime-related transactions including trade name, issuance of license, renewal of license, amendment of license and cancellation of license. To ensure a smooth transition, Dubai Maritime City Authority announced that it has informed all relevant government departments and concerned parties about the new structure and the specific responsibilities now being handled by the Authority.

"Dubai Maritime City represents a new era in the maritime industry as we open new possibilities and provide innovative solutions to address evolving challenges in this highly dynamic sector. With Dubai Maritime City Authority assuming maritime regulatory responsibilities, we are now well on course of realising the maritime centre's vision of catering to all the requirements of the global maritime industry," said Adel Kalantar, Director- Business Support Services at Dubai Maritime City.

"We are pleased to give Dubai Maritime City Authority the opportunity to share and benefit from DED’s expertise in the registration and licensing of businesses. We believe that due to its expertise in the maritime industry, Dubai Maritime City will certainly provide great benefits to the maritime sector and national economy as well as promote efficiency and transparency in the delivery of services to the business community," stated Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Executive Affairs at DED.

The establishment of DMC realises the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to create a fully integrated environment that supports the sustained development of Dubai's maritime sector and contributes to the development of the national economy.

The move is also in accordance with the Dubai Maritime City Law No. (11) of 2007 that was passed into law by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The law tasks DMCA to enhance Dubai's position in the maritime industry, and to oversee the development of specific maritime sectors such as maritime services, maritime management, vessel and yacht registration, vessel and yacht ownership and charter, maritime and educational research, vessel and yacht design and building, maritime shipment organisation, maritime exhibition, conferences, training and workshops; maritime tourism and maritime specialised arbitration.

"This move is not only a simple transfer of functions; it represents a commitment to raise the level of performance and exceed the expectations of our clients in the global maritime sector, who can now expect more value-added premiums because Dubai Maritime City Authority has been established specifically as a maritime authority," added Kalantar.

On completion, Dubai Maritime City will feature a fully integrated community for business, industrial activities, residential and academic and recreational amenities designed with a unique maritime-themed lifestyle.

Dubai Maritime City one year ahead of schedule

Dubai Maritime City has announced construction on the project – currently in the third and final construction phase – is a year ahead of schedule. The world's first purpose-built maritime centre has been designed to address the requirements of the global maritime community through its integrated facilities, infrastructure, services and regulations.

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will be a mixed-use development for the maritime industry, comprising industrial, commercial, residential and leisure facilities housed on a man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and Dubai Dry Docks. "More than 100 years after establishing itself as one of Middle East and North Africa region's leading maritime trade destinations, Dubai is embarking on a new wave that will see it become home to the world's largest maritime community," said Nawfal Al Jourani, chief marketing officer, Dubai Maritime City.

On completion, Dubai Maritime City will incorporate six clusters spread across a 227-hectare man-made peninsula, which include: the Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, Maritime Centre, Marina District, Dubai Maritime City Campus and the Industrial Quarter.

The complex will also include the UAE's first National Maritime Museum, the Gulf region's largest ship lift for ship maintenance and repair and a boat licensing facility.

It is also expected that Dubai Maritime City will be able to accommodate a large percentage of the 30,000 to 40,000 boats and yachts predicted to be moored in Dubai within the next five years.

"With more than half the warehouses and workshops operational, the 3,000 tonne ship lift ready and the larger 6,000 tonne ship lift standing at more than 70 per cent completion, investors can now clearly see the vision behind Dubai Maritime City. Moreover, the project offers investors other incentives such as free-zone benefits, responsive government support, the independence as a regulatory authority, a tax-free business environment and an effective port structure," Al Jourani added.

As a peninsula development, Dubai Maritime City can take advantage of the benefits of open sea access for the industrial community, while offering sea views to residents and office buildings.

DMC's Maritime Centre launched

http://i27.tinypic.com/200wba0.gif

Dubai Maritime City (DMC) has launched its Maritime Centre, the business capital of the city, at a major show in Athens, Greece.

The global launch of the Maritime Centre was made at a press conference during the opening day of Posidonia, the world’s biggest maritime industry event.

The Maritime Centre, the heart of the Dubai Maritime City, comprises a cluster of five high-rise towers called the Creek Towers and Plaza; a landmark tower located at the head of the man-made peninsula; and seven plots reserved for potential developers planning to construct their own towers. The centre will also feature a five-star business hotel and premium service apartments, thus emerging as the first exclusive maritime cluster in the world, a statement said.

“A study by renowned consulting firm DNV Maritime Solutions revealed that Dubai is set to emerge as one of the world’s most competitive maritime clusters. The Maritime City has been singled out as one of the important elements that will help mould Dubai into a maritime powerhouse within the next few years, and the Maritime Centre forms the core of this visionary development,” said Amer Ali, CEO of Dubai Maritime City.

Located at the tip of the 227-hectare man-made peninsula, the Maritime Centre is the focal point of Dubai Maritime City, serving as the universal capital for all maritime businesses. Designed as an urban corporate park, the centre offers the choicest business amenities; it incorporates a series of multilevel facilities aimed at diverse functions and purposes such as state-of-the-art international maritime conference facilities, retail outlets consisting of shops and restaurants, with walkways and promenades, attractive landscaping, and recreational areas.

Currently in its third and final phase of development, Dubai Maritime City comprises a community encompassed within a unique maritime-themed lifestyle and divided into six clusters: The Marina District; Industrial Precinct; Dubai Maritime City Campus; The Maritime Centre; Harbour Offices; and Harbour Residences. The project’s ‘green building’ policies, whereby all developers are required to obtain green building certification to ensure energy conservation and optimised living conditions, make it the first maritime centre to implement such strict environmental compliance and long-term sustainability initiatives, said the statement.

“There is nothing quite like Dubai Maritime City in terms of size, and even environmental compatibility. Every conceivable issue that may affect the project has been thoroughly scrutinised and addressed. We have also maintained a high level of flexibility to be able to accommodate future trends and requirements as this has been one of the important aspects that ensure Dubai Maritime City’s long-term sustainability,” concluded Ali. – TradeArabia News Service

For those that don't know the project has been delayed by about two years. They had a sinking problem with the ship yards it sank about 6 inches. Jadaf is back in operation again.

Apparently the heads of DMC where told not to start construction and wait a few years for the soil to settle but they ignored and went ahead anyway. Just like Palm Jumeirah they need to time to let the soil settle.

The information comes from someone I know involved in the project.

I dunno what you mean by the delay.

As far as the 19 commercial plots & the 14 residential plots are concerned, what I hear from the people in the city; the plots have been handed over for construction & the tests are going. Construction would begin probably by September 2008. Plus, the deadline for completion of the project is 2011.

So far, we have a few towers launched:

1] Kensington Krystal - Commercial
2] Verde (Residences)
3] Verde (Offices)
4] Amwaj - Commercial

So, where do you guys see the average prices going for the towers in Dubai Maritime City in the near future?
