Great photography, but you know you're in a terrible neighbourhood when there are bars on the windows :(

It's a shame too, because some of the old architecture is beautiful.

New York, in general, lacks green in the winter. Hey, it's winter, that's expected. There's some nice tenements in there.

I'm glad there's no greenery that's how a real city should be... (wish my city was like that...)

Thats my neighborhood right there. Mount Eden Pkwy, 174th street, Grand Concourse, Weeks Av, Tremont Av... Not the best place in the world, but i been here for years and you quite get used to it. Its nice here, not as dangerous as some people think. Of course, there is always the undesirable people, but the majority are not harmful.

Not as bad as you might expect. However, most of this apartments are rented, and the building owners take the precaution to place bars in the 1st floor windows to avoid potential burglaries, but those bars have probably been there from the times when the Bronx was much more heated than today.

I gave it enough thought, and if i ever get the chance to live in new york for a while, this is definetly my #1 neighborhood choice (that i'm sure is affordable)...

ChiTown: you actually like the fact that there's less greenery in those shots? That's one of the things I love about Chicago -- it's that there is so much greenery on the side streets, especially in residential neighborhoods. The setbacks with the grass next the curb, and the corner lots with the extra patch of grass/trees on the side make a hugely appealing aesthetic difference to me.

Oh well, to each his own.

Can't argue with you about East Tremont though, it is one of the nicer/nicest parts of the Bronx.

ChitownCity
March 18th, 2011, 12:26 AM
^Not saying its a bad thing, but imo chicago over does it a little too much. The setbacks are too far back in places like the bungalow belt, making it feel really suburban. Then top that off with a full grown tree in front of each property :puke:. I wouldn't mind if it was a characteristic of a few neighborhoods here and there, but every hood? How many neighborhoods do we have with no greenery? None. I'm not surprised though considering half the urban planners board are suburbanites and daley is a huge supporter of the tree initiative (as if we seriously need that many trees. what about the new exurbs?)

Rant over....

PointDuSable
March 18th, 2011, 06:35 PM
Well, there's a reason they call Chicago the "City in a Garden," but there are plenty of low-rise residential neighborhoods surrounding the Loop (not the bungalow belt) that are very reminiscent of the "East Tremont-look," where you have largely concrete sidewalks and maybe some trees planted along the curb: Little Italy/Univ. Village between Harrison and Roosevelt/Ashland and Halsted, Wicker Park, some parts of Lincoln Park, and defintely some parts along the Clybourn corridor etc. Don't mean to highjack this thread, but since we are talking about East Tremont, all the neighborhoods I mentioned are similar Chicago "equivalents," I think.

ChitownCity
March 20th, 2011, 07:09 AM
Well firstly, the neighborhoods surrounding the core should always be dense and developed.

If there was a neighborhood within 100 miles of Chicago that looked anything like Tremont then there would be no need for me to fantasize over Tremont. Chicago doesn't have anything near this level away from the core/lakefront, and even with those, they don't even have the geography (hills) to compete...

Nice pics :)

Tremont actually dosn't look that bad, sure it dosn't look like the Upper East Side, but other than the graffiti it dosn't look like what you'd expect a "bad" neighbourhood to look like.

My neck of the woods. Some of my good friends still live in tremont. I actually grew up a little closer to burnside. Like someone said earlier, it's not that bad of a place to live. Don't walk around there just for the sake of it if you're not from there though lol. Anyone else from the Bronx?

The density in parts of the Bronx is just insane, every street looks like it is a major street lined with in many cases solid walls five-seven story apartment buildings, I mean the smallest scale buildings I saw were townhouses and row-houses, all concrete sidewalks without greenery (you have to go to the park to see plants I guess), I don't recall seeing any vacant lots and very few surface parking lots of any kind.

I love the density of the Bronx, the pics are great! Is tremont and east tremont south of the cross Bronx expressway?
