bukhrin August 10th, 2010, 04:36 AM Noticed that it stopped at Tasik Selatan too ! How they're going to manage it since they only have 2 platforms there ? Ticket inspectors standing by ? But the 6-cars trains will cover the whole length of the station.
I'm not surprised if one of these days those angry mobs tired of waiting there will just gate-crash the ETS transit just to get to KL-Sentral or more realistically some of the commuters will accidentally board it, thinking that finally KTMB has bought more trains for Komuter. (Not everyone read forum/news on transportation btw)
http://www.ets-train.com.my/web/asset/images/others/ETS-Fare-Structure.jpg
But the pricing scheme is at least smart enough, skewed for long distance travels and discourages short ones.
KL Sentral - BTS = $9.00 ETS
KL Sentral - BTS = $4.20 ERL (at 2 TPH) and I suspect faster
KL Sentral - BTS = $1.00 Komuter (at whatever TPH KTM feels like giving you)
mrtfreak August 10th, 2010, 01:21 PM I smell something weird here, it's written "Ipoh-KL in less than 2 hours", but the schedule itself showing that the fastest journey takes 2 hours and 2 mins.
 By KL they mean Kuala Lumpur station right?

TWK90 August 10th, 2010, 04:09 PM To recap, these are the facilities that they have on board the ETS.
- TV
- Cafeteria
- Disabled friendly toilets and priority seating for them.
- CCTV on all coaches
- Power socket (one for each seat row of 2 passengers)
In future, the service can be extended to Butterworth when Ipoh-Padang Besar EDTP completes.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Electric Train Services (ETS) inter-city trips will be increased during the Raya season if there is demand.
KTM Bhd president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said trips between Ipoh and Seremban would continue but the service could be extended subject to customer demand.
”We can have between eight to 10 trains running daily,” he told reporters during a familiarisation trip from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
He said that five trains would depart from Ipoh and Seremban daily. The ETS begins operating today.
There will be 10 trips between Ipoh and Seremban at RM30 for a one-way journey.
Dr Aminuddin said the promotion rate of RM30 one-way could be permanent depending on market demand.
“RM30 is a very competitive price based on the services and travelling speed of the train,” he said.
“We will review the price after the six-month promotional period,” he added.
Dr Aminuddin also said ETS would launch its online ticketing services next month to attract more customers.
“Customers will get discounts if they book through the Internet,” he added.
Perak executive council member Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the new train service would be a boon for the tourism industry.
jeeshyan August 12th, 2010, 05:51 PM ETS An Alternative Mode Of Transport During Aidilfitri - Kong
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysians celebrating Aidilfitri in Ipoh have been urged to use the Electric Train Service (ETS) as an alternative mode of transport.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha was confident that ETS which could reach speed of up to 160 km/h would attract the public as it would take only two hours to reach Ipoh.
"I hope the people will use ETS during Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Christmas and Chinese New Year," he said when launching ETS at Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station here Thursday.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) had fixed the promotion ticket at RM30 one-way for the Kuala Lumpur-Ipoh trip until February.
Kong said the ticket would be priced at RM45.40 one-way after the promotion period ends.
Discounts would be given to senior citizens, children, the disabled and government retirees.
ETS comes in two types namely Transit and Express service.
Transit will stop at Kuala Lumpur, Rawang, Tanjung Malim, Behrang, Slim River, Sungkai, Tapah Road, Kampar and Batu Gajah before reaching Ipoh.
Express service will stop at Kuala Lumpur, Tanjung Malim, Kampar, Batu Gajah and Ipoh.
Two trains will depart Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station and two will depart Ipoh Station while the other is the Ipoh-Seremban service.
Meanwhile, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said it expects 3,500 people to use ETS daily during the Aidilfitri period.
He said ETS would start with two daily services and would be increased to eight daily depending on demand.
ETS is the first train equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and can save two hours travelling time compared to express buses and inter-city trains.
Each of the six South Korean-made train coaches costing RM48 million can accommodate 350 passengers one-way.

nazrey August 13th, 2010, 06:35 AM ETS concession fare until next year
By LESTER KONG Friday August 13, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR: The Electric Train Services (ETS) RM30 concession fare has been extended to Feb 28, to ensure cheap rides throughout the festive season from Hari Raya to Chinese New Year next year.
“ETS is a much awaited service by the rakyat and they have responded well since Monday,” Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said when launching ETS’ commercial operations yesterday.
With the ETS, passengers can get from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh in just two hours.
The full journey, from Seremban to Ipoh, takes three hours.
Kong said the ministry had also set a maximum limit of 20sen per km to be implemented after the end of the concession period.
“The rates will be raised after the concession period. But maybe not to 20sen per km, maybe only 18sen,” he said.
A one-way trip at 18sen per km from here would cost RM45.40 to Ipoh and RM21.10 to Seremban, Kong estimated.
However, these fares would not take into account a RM4 fee for reservation and air-conditioning.
“There are some additional char*ges but we are studying it. We have not confirmed anything yet,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kong said the proposal to put a co-driver or a chaperone on school buses to prevent children from being victimised had to be studied.
“We can suggest a lot of things but we have to consider the cost and practicality,” he said.
He was commenting on a suggestion by Women, Family and Com*munity Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil last week to have chaperones as a safety measure.
Kong said that a better way was to teach children about the risks to their safety, including sexual harassment.

KTM plans to put company back on profitability track
KUALA LUMPUR: KTM Bhd expects its newly-launched electric trains servicing Ipoh and KL, and later the entire train service along the electrified double tracks, to be profitable. The company is planning a restructure to be more efficient and return to profitability by 2013.
The electric train sets (ETS) that now ply the route are on the books of another government company and not on KTM’s balance sheet. KTM president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the company was looking at making an operating profit from the Ipoh-KL route once its new fare was accepted.
The ETS service between Ipoh and KL started yesterday and, for the first six months, the fare offered to passengers is at a promotional price of RM30 one way.
“At the moment the KL-Ipoh route is fully booked,’’ he told StarBiz on Wednesday, adding that the KL to Seremban line experienced peak traffic for the commuter service during the rush hours.
KTM has started with 10 return trips daily for its Ipoh-KL service and plans are on the table for the number of return trips to rise to 16.
KTM has proposed that the fare along the journey be raised to 20 sen a km which would then bump up fares to RM50, which it feels is essential for its service to be profitable.
Its proposed fare needs ministerial approval, which has so far not been forthcoming as the Government said it wanted to cap the cost of a ticket to RM30 to encourage usage of trains.
KTM posted a loss of RM118.9mil for its 2008 financial year.
Aminuddin said KTM had ordered 40 new locomotives to cater for the upgraded rail service on completion of the electrified double tracking project. KTM expects to see a bump in revenue and usage of the expanded tracks once the service starts in 2014.
The MMC Corp-Gamuda consortium had won the job for the double tracking and electrification of the 329km Ipoh-Padang Besar stretch for RM12.5bil. Work is 43% complete as at July 2010. The Ipoh-Padang Besar project is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.
Upgrades on other parts of the rail network in Peninsular Malaysia are also being done. Ircon International Ltd has bagged the RM3.45bil Seremban-Gemas electrified double-tracking project which is scheduled for completion in 2012.
The final link for electrification and upgrade is the Gemas-Johor Baru stretch. The cost of that project is reported at RM8bil and has been slotted for completion under the 10th Malaysia Plan. The award of the contract would be given out soon, according to reports.
Once the double tracking routes are opened, KTM will run similar electric train sets between those destinations. Aminuddin said the cost of operations would also be lower with the use of electric train sets and hopes KTM would boost its operating profit once trains along those routes are up and running.
Aminuddin said KTM was seeing an annual growth in traffic of 10% per annum and was expecting that growth rate to increase once electric trains start plying the electrified double tracking route.
He said demand for freight services, which now account for the bulk of KTM’s revenue, along the double tracking project would increase. He said there was huge demand for freight services into Malaysia from southern Thailand.

nazrey August 14th, 2010, 08:22 AM KTM banks on double tracking
By JAGDEV SINGH SIDHU Saturday August 14, 2010
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/8/14/business/6855667&sec=business
THE next phase of the public transportation upgrade in Malaysia has kicked off with KTM Bhd launching its electric train service between Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. But the biggest challenge for the railway operator is to prove that the electrified double tracking project will not be a white elephant.
KTM, which will undertake a restructuring to return to profitability, is counting on the double tracking project to deliver earnings, and to do so, it is making sure the tracks are well utilised. “This is a good investment by the Government,’’ says KTM president Dr Aminuddin Adnan.
He dispels concerns that the hugely costly project will be a waste, as he says demand for rail services in the country currently exceeds supply. To match the demand, KTM will be ordering 40 more locomotives, both electric and diesel, to meet the increased capacity brought on by the double tracking project from the start of 2014.
The company will be looking at utilising solely electric trains along the electrified tracks, given the lower cost of operations. The diesel locomotives being ordered will be used for the non-electrified portions of the peninsula’s rail network.
The northern section of the double tracking project will be completed by end-2013 and the line to Johor Baru by 2016.
The MMC Corp Bhd-Gamuda Bhd consortium is working on the double tracking and electrification of the 329km Ipoh-Padang Besar stretch for RM12.5bil.
In terms of significant structures along that stretch, the consortium, as of July, has completed 43% of the tunnelling works (the 3.3km Berapit tunnel and 300m Larut tunnel) in Perak, 36% of structural works for new Swing Bridge in Prai, Penang, and 73% of the Bukit Merah viaduct in Perak.
Ircon International Ltd has bagged the RM3.45bil Seremban-Gemas electrified double-tracking project, which is scheduled for completion in 2012.
The final link for electrification and upgrade is the Gemas-Johor Baru stretch. The cost of that package is reported to be RM8bil and it is slated for completion under the 10th Malaysia Plan. The contract will be awarded soon, reports say.
The double tracking project is expected to ferry more passengers along the railway lines of the country, and is off to a good start with the rail service between KL and Ipoh fully booked during the intital stage.
However, industry experts say most of the demand will be concentrated in selected areas closer to the urban centres. “The Ipoh to KL route and the outlying suburban areas should see healthy passenger travel,’’ said a source.
KTM is hoping that with the faster travel offered by the electric train sets (ETS), people will switch from cars, buses and aeroplanes to rail.
One other benefit KTM has in that regard is that train stations in the major stops along the route are located in the centre of town, which makes travelling and access much easier for train passengers.
KTM, which Aminuddin says is seeing an annual traffic growth of 10%, is expecting that rate to increase once it allows other operators to ply its routes. “We are looking to do that so KTM can get more than the 10% growth,’’ he explains.
Currently The Eastern & Oriental Express (E&O) operates an independent train service between Singapore and Bangkok, carrying passengers in luxury on a scenic ride through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. KTM gets a fee for allowing the train to use its tracks.
Another reason why he feels people will make the switch is because of the increasing cost of fuel. With fuel prices expected to increase in the future domestically, Aminuddin hopes people will instead rely on trains for their current transportation needs.
While getting more people on trains would be important, it is essential for KTM to get more freight onto the rail tracks as freight services account for the bulk of the company’s revenue. Revenue from intercity travel and the commuter service, if added together, is however higher.
But industry officials say there is an ready market for freight to be carted along the tracks once the double tracking project is completed. “There is good freight forecast from Port Klang and the inland port at Nilai,’’ says a source.
Its been pointed out that the adoption of “metre gauge” tracks allows for freight trains to continue operating on the new double tracks alongside the passenger-use ETS.
KTMB is said to currently run 37 freight services daily, of which about 70% are concentrated in the northern sector. “There is a ready freight market that will utilise the double track in the northern region as Penang Port is the only available port to Thailand that’s located on the west of the peninsula,’’ says a source.
Upgrades at Penang Port, along with its supporting infrastructure, is being undertaken to add capacity for handling an expected boost in freight once the double tracking project for the northern stretch is completed.
Aminuddin adds that the electrified double tracking project can also draw more cargo into Malaysia from southern Thailand.
The improvements the double tracking project will bring offers KTM an opportunity to return to profitability. That task, however, will be tough to accomplish. But Aminuddin, who says a restructuring exercise is in the pipeline to make the company more efficient and profitable after 2013, believes the lower cost of operating electric trains will help.

project aliciel August 14th, 2010, 07:08 PM Kampar-KL, RM26... compared the bus fare (RM15.10), if concession is over, RM40 is possible... ETS is far more expensive than bus already, I doubt KTMB ability to challenge the express bus in long-haul commuting market. From what I see from the photo, it's second class seat is smaller than express bus VIP seat, from Kampar, still RM 15.10. I don't know the price from Ipoh to KL, but I guess ETS fare is 150% and above of the bus fares. Passengers may rather take Antarabandar than ETS because Antarabandar is RM20 from Kampar to KL in 2nd Class, RM10 in 3rd Class.
Maybe the fare can run lower if passenger demand become stable (I mean every train are fully booked).

I think they r trying to profit as much as possible from their ETS line. After Ipoh-Padang Besar line completed, hopefully the will drop their fare to be competitive with bus fare. Coz i dont think rm50-60 for kl-penang trip in ETS is reasonable.

rs25 August 17th, 2010, 01:03 PM This is true sad. News reports said the 1st ETS trip from KL on launching date just managed to get 10 passengers, while another passenger told the reporter saying that he felt being cheated because the train took 2hr 20 minutes to reach from KL to Ipoh, not 2 hr as promised. Everyone feels that the price is expensive. I would rather hope KTMB replaces all shuttle trains with ETS trains and maintains the fare same as the shuttle train fare.

Double tracking is just the infrastructure and it is not just ETS alone.
With the completion of double tracking, not just ETS will be introduced, intercity services (the current diesel service) will be improved due to the double track layout compared to current single track.
At the moment, RM 17 is the cheapest you can from KTM (Intercity, not ETS) for KL-Butterworth. Of course, if ETS eventually reaches Butterworth, it would be more expensive.
Likewise, the cheapest ticket to Ipoh using diesel train is RM 12 on KTM Intercity (Antarabandar). ETS costs RM 30 for the same trip (promotion).

nazrey August 21st, 2010, 10:52 AM Thumbs-up for new Seremban-Ipoh train service
Story and photos by CHARLES FERNANDEZ Saturday August 21, 2010

PASSENGERS were pleased when they boarded the train from Seremban to Ipoh in the newly launched Electric Train Service (ETS).
Beginning from the Seremban station, there were only fewer than 10 passengers, but when the train — looking like an upgraded version of the present KTM Komuter trains — approached the Nilai and Bandar Tasik Selatan stations, there were many waiting on the platform to board the ETS.
This ETS was much awaited by the people. The response, especially from KL Sentral onwards, was encouraging as it took passengers to Ipoh in just two hours.
The inaugural train service from Seremban at 5.55pm on Aug 12, took just 45 minutes to KL Sentral and the full journey to Ipoh was less than three hours.
Previously, it took passengers who travelled on the shuttle service, about three hours from just Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh.
Passengers who were on the inaugural Seremban-Ipoh route when interviewed said the service was excellent. They hope the ticket price would be capped at RM38 to encourage more people to use the service.
Currently, there’s only one service — at 5.55pm but travellers can look forward to a 10.55am service which is scheduled to be launched soon.
More importantly, the passengers were relieved that the ETS has finally taken off. It was supposed to have started in December last year. Then it was postponed to April, July and finally the first week of August.
Passengers were on a promotional rate of RM30 for the KL-Ipoh route and RM38 for the Seremban-Ipoh route.
The promised wifi connectivity was not available and the food bar in the middle coach was not operational yet.
Once these are in place, passengers who decide on this mode of transport fear that it would not be at the promotional price any more. They fear that there could be an increase in the fare when the promotion ends in February next year.
The ETS RM30 concession fare from KL-Ipoh has been extended to Feb 28 to ensure cheap rides throughout the festive season from this Hari Raya right up to Chinese New Year next year.

Normdas buying a ticket at the counter in Seremban for the trip to Ipoh.
Normdas Khairul, 29, a lecturer in Alor Gajah, was the first to buy an ETS ticket at the Seremban counter. He said the service was a blessing as he was a frequent traveller to Batu Gajah.
“Prevously, it would take me more than six hours, now it is all done in less than four hours, It is cheaper, faster and a convenient mode of travel. I hope they will keep the ticket price low to encourage more users,’’ said Normdas.
As for Hizam Harun, 52, and his wife Khalidah Hasiah, 49, from Butterworth, the ETS has reduced their travelling time.
“We used to drive twice a month to visit my son who is studying in a college in Malacca. Now I just have to drive until Ipoh and hop onto the ETS. It is so convenient. At least I can relax for three hours before getting to Malacca,’’ said Hizam.
The couple took the ETS from Ipoh in the morning and were back in Ipoh on the same day.

Conducive environment: Some of the Muslim
passengers breaking fast on board the train.
University Islam Antarabangsa student Muhd Hazziq, 19, was on the ETS for the fun of it.
“I love to try anything that is new. My college is in Nilai and I stay in Kuala Lumpur. I went to Seremban just to try the ETS and did not mind paying the RM16 fare. Usually my fare is RM4.70 from Nilai to Kuala Lumpur on the komuter,’’ said Muhd Hazziq.
He said he would keep the ETS ticket as part of his collection.
Like Muhd Hazziq, Normaliana Roslan, 20, from Uniten in Bandar Muadzam Shah in Pahang and who was travelling to Ipoh, said the ETS was more comfortable than the bus.
Australian Tom Ord, 59, and Briton Tom Harvey, 49, said although they found the service convenient, they were, however, disappointed because there was no wi-fi service.
“Due to the nature of my job, I use the laptop most of the time. I travel often and hope the next time around, there is wi-fi connection,’’ said Harvey.
Ord was, however, disappointed because there was a lack of signages and information at KL Sentral to inform passengers the time the train was arriving.
“The area was also dark and I had to move through several barricades to get to the platform. The lack of information on the new services was rather disheartening,’’ added Ord.
Another passenger S. Kanapathy, 36, loves the comfort and the fact that he can keep his schedules.
“The fare at RM30 is reasonable. Hopefully, they would cap it at that. I am home every weekend. Usually I take the shuttle service and now the ETS saves me time. I hope the ETS keeps to its schedule,’’ said Kanapathy.
As for Yvonne Blake, 50, she was just checking out the ETS.
“I drive to Ipoh during weekends to vist my parents. If the train can reduce my travelling time, then I would just forget about driving,’’ said Blake.
Other passengers said they opted for the train because of the availability of toilets compared with express buses on long journeys where they had to stop at rest areas along the highways.
The ETS is equipped with two unisex and two disabled toilets, a buffet carriage, two closed-circuit television cameras per coach and two liquid crystal displays per coach, for advertising and information purposes.
There are five sets of six-car trains and it stops at Nilai, Bandar Tasik Selatan, KL Sentral, Tg Malim, Tapah, Kampar and Batu Gajah stations.

PETALING JAYA: KTM Berhad has apologised to all KTM Komuter passengers for its recent poor performance.
In an official statement yesterday, its senior corporate communications acting manager Mohd Fazil Ismail said this was due to the inadequate number of operating train sets.
“We need at least 31 sets of trains to operate the 15-minute and 30-minute intervals but sometimes, less than that are available for daily operations,” he said.
Mohd Fazil said all available and functioning train sets were being utilised now.
“But when some do not meet daily operational requirements, KTM will have to make do with the available trains and cancel other services,” he added.
“All 18 ten-year-old sets have been refurbished and are currently operating. We will continue refurbishing the other 15 sets by the second quarter of next year,” said Fazil.
He said the Government had also approved the acquisition of 38 sets of six-car trains, expected to be delivered between November next year and April 2012 in stages.
“Our intervals will then be improved from 30 minutes to 7.5 minutes,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Bhd is giving away food packs to commuters at selected stations during Ramadan.
The distribution of food packs, which started on Augu 11, will continue until tomorrow.
Five hundred packs are given away per day at each station which includes KL Sentral, Bank Negara, and Bandar Tasik Selatan.
"We hope the programme will help the commuters, especially the Muslims, who have to break fast on the train," said KTM Bhd president Dr Aminuddin Adnan. The programme has been held annually since 2005.
The food packs, which contain a bottle of water, dates and a piece of cake, are distributed from 6pm to 7.30pm daily.
Aminuddin said the public response to KTM's electric train service (ETS), which started on Aug 12, had been overwhelming, with the sale of tickets reaching RM43,000 on the fifth day. -- By Masriwanie Muhamading

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will introduce electric trains for its intercity service for routes in the west coast of the peninsula in five years.
Its general manager (Intercity service), Mohd Zain Mat Taha, said the service would be introduced for the Seremban-Gemas and Ipoh-Padang Besar routes.
"The electric trains will replace the locomotive coaches," he told reporters at a Merdeka eve celebration organised by the KTMB Intercity service.
However, he said the locomotive coaches would still be used for its east coast route as the railway tracks there had yet to have electric cables.
The programme for the Merdeka eve celebration involved the participation of more than 47 students and teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Sri Damansara, members of the media and KTMB staff. - Bernama

Festive treat: Dr Aminuddin (third from right) and Mohd Zain (second from

Senandung Wau 28 train to Tumpat.
PASSENGERS of the KTM Senandung Wau 28 heading to Tumpat in Kelantan from the KL Sentral station yesterday were in for a treat when they received Hari Raya goodies — courtesy of KTM Berhad before embarking on their journey.
KTM Berhad president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said 5,000 goodie bags were handed out to passengers of the KTM commuter and KTM Intercity yesterday in appreciation of their support and loyalty.
“Despite increasing the number of seats by 18,000 for the festive season this year, 80% of the 140,000 tickets have already been sold,” he said, adding that tickets to the East Coast until Sept 18 were completely sold out.
“We urge passengers to be careful with their belongings and to arrive at least half an hour before the train is scheduled to leave to avoid being disappointed,” he added.
KTM Intercity passenger Sudirman, 27, who was returning to Gua Musang to celebrate Hari Raya with his family, said he was pleasantly surprised to receive the goodies from KTMB while Nadarajah Kumaran, 54, who was heading south to Segamat said he travelled by KTM frequently as it was a much safer way to travel, as opposed to driving or taking a bus.
“Some of the other activities organised by KTMB during the fasting month include giving away of dates to passengers, the buka puasa ceremony in Singapore and National Day celebrations in Ipoh,” said KTM Intercity general manager Mohd Zain Mat Taha, adding that such events were carried out every year in conjunction with the festive season.
The family of KTM worker Marzuki Abdul Latif who died last month due to stomach ulcer was not forgotten during the festivities.
His wife, Khatijah Mohammad, 41, thanked KTMB for their contribution and was in tears as she received the donation and hamper.
KTMB launched the Express Train Service recently which travels the KL-Ipoh and Seremban-Ipoh routes with a promotional price of RM30 until Feb 28 next year.

tunomura September 21st, 2010, 12:18 AM Perak Suggests Introduction Of Ipoh-Lumut Train Service
LUMUT, Sept 20 (Bernama) - The Transport Ministry will be requested to carry out a study on the feasibility of having a train service between Ipoh and Lumut to spur development, especially in the Manjung district, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
"The idea (train service) was mooted by me following the rapid development in Manjung and Lumut where there is a need for another fast and efficient transport service," he added.
He said the proposed train service would be able to bring more tourists to the Lumut-Pangkor tourism zone, as well as provide an alternative transportation of goods from and to the Lumut Port.
The proposal had been handed over to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, he told reporters after closing a motivation camp for students at SJKT Mukim Pundut here.
Zambry said Manjung was the most rapidly developing district in Perak and that the presence of the train service would further enhance its development, as well as boost its tourism sector.
He said Lumut and Pangkor Island were popular destinations for tourists, adding that the availability of the train service would attract more tourists to the place.

Malaysia’s government is studying the viability of a high-speed rail system to connect greater Kuala Lumpur to Singapore with a traveling time of two hours, according to an exhibition in the capital.
The study will be led by the Land Public Transport Commission and the Economic Planning Unit, which will present the results to Malaysia’s cabinet in early January, the display shows.
The Cabinet will consider a study on a mass rail project for Kuala Lumpur by the end of this year, according to the exhibition.
The scheme could cost a total RM45 billion, comprising RM36 billion of infrastructure and RM9 billion of operating assets including trains, the display shows. -- Bloomberg
t3ars_culprit September 21st, 2010, 05:29 AM Why Gov waste money on double tracking??? ETS is like no help on reducing the traveling time... and its kind of expensive for such medium speeds train...
mrtfreak September 21st, 2010, 07:11 AM At least they can increase frequency and allow passengers the flexibility of choosing which time they want to travel at. :) And the Komuter system can be expanded too. Also, think of it this way. With double tracking, KTM becomes more competitive. This allows them to increase market share compared to if they had only a single track. With increased competitiveness, there is job security too.
Frankly though, don't think its such a fantastic idea to have Komuter spread so far. What would be nice is to have things like Komuter KL, Komuter Ipoh, Komuter Johor that would feature interchanges between the various states. For example, Komuter KL and Komuter Ipoh can both terminate at Tanjung Malim. Here passengers can transfer trains if they want. Or if they want to skip the having to change, just take the ETS straight to wherever they want to go.

MRT thats what i have in mind it a independent commuter system linking lumut -batu gajah to ipoh:)Of course linking it with the the main northsouth tracks.
mrtfreak September 21st, 2010, 12:16 PM Most definitely possible. But Komuter KL already has quite a bad service and they're seemingly expanding further and further out now. First with the extension to Tanjung Malim and Batu Caves, then in a few years to Senawang. Seems to be pushing further south. So to avoid overly long trips, it would be better to segregate Komuter into districts as I explained above. :)

try take the train during any festive season and compare it to highway travel, you'll see which one is the fastest. ETS for me is a good project but the problem is the ticket is too expensive. What i like to see is the ticket price is similar to express buses. From KL to IPOH for RM30 is too much. Maybe they will reduce the price once ipoh - padang besar line completed.

2010/09/30 By S. Ista Kyra

IPOH: After months of negotiations over the price for the release of a piece of railway reserve land in Kuala Sepetang, Taiping, to the Perak government, the Federal Government has finally decided to hand it over for free.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, in announcing this, said the Transport Ministry had waived the RM37 million price for the 94.5ha Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) reserve land between Taiping and Kuala Sepetang (then known as Port Weld).
"After months of negotiations and discussions, the Federal Government has in a generous gesture agreed to the release of the land without a single sen," he told reporters after closing the three-month long Warriors Day pledge here yesterday.
The status of the land -- where more than 600 families have been residing before World War 2 -- had been in limbo after the Perak government decided the price set by the Federal government early this year was just too exorbitant.
The state government maintained that the land was not going to be used for commercial purposes and asked the Railway Asset Corporation to review the price in the interest of the people.
Zambry said the state was now looking to solve the housing problem of the hundreds of squatter families in the area.
He added that the state was awaiting a detailed report from the Larut, Matang and Selama district office.
He also presented RM50,000, on behalf of the state government, as a contribution to the Warrior's Day collection fund. The fund, initiated in July, now totalled RM150,000 in donations from corporate bodies, political parties and the public.
The money would be channelled to help veterans, wounded soldiers and their families.

KUALA LUMPUR: A KTM intercity train that plies the Kuala Lumpur-Ipoh route will be used from Monday to overcome the problems of delays and breakdowns of the KTM commuter service.
The train would be used on weekdays, three times a day during peak period on the train route from Seremban to Sungai Buloh, said KTM Bhd president Dr Aminuddin Adnan.
Dr Aminuddin said the train which has six coaches could accommodate 700 passengers, double the number on a regular KTM commuter train.
“We will provide the service until the old commuter trains are repaired or refurbished,” he said adding that they accommodated 60,000 to 70,000 passengers during peak hours daily. He was responding to public complaints on train delays which were highlighted by The Star Metro Central on Monday.
The coach will leave Seremban at 6.15 am and reach KL Sentral at 7.30 am and Sungai Buloh at 7.50am. In the evening, it will leave Sentul at 6.30pm and reach KL Sentral at 6.45pm and Seremban at 8pm.
Although the train is from the KTM premium fleet, passengers will pay the normal rate, Dr Aminuddin said at the KTM Bhd headquarters Hari Raya celebration yesterday.
Recently, the Government had allocated funds for refurbishing some of the trains, he said adding that they were surprised by the sudden surge in passenger volume following the hike in petrol price.
In the long-term, the Government has approved the purchase of 38 six-car sets which would start operations in January 2012, he said.
On another issue, Dr Aminuddin said KTM Bhd was also looking at drafting a law to penalise men who deliberately enter edwomen coaches.

allurban October 2nd, 2010, 07:49 PM MRT thats what i have in mind it a independent commuter system linking lumut -batu gajah to ipoh:)Of course linking it with the the main northsouth tracks.it's a good idea but they should follow the RapidPenang model - make the corridor work with a reliable bus service first - then they can start talking about investment in a railway.
It seems that government leaders, the public and railfans like to talk about big, capital intensive projects as if they can be accomplished easily, overnight, with miniscule costs. In reality these are very complex projects involving many different government agencies - not to mention all the complicated engineering involved.
Given that the Ministry of Transport just gave up the remains of the land of the Kuala Sepetang, Taiping to squatters for free, it just shows you how complicated it can be to build a railway.
That's why the "start with the bus" model works - it gets people using the service and builds a solid, reliable foundation for the future expansion.

allurban October 3rd, 2010, 06:38 AM Ipoh-Lumut line is not just about to cater passenger, it also will be utilize Lumut Port as a commodity port. I think single electrified line is more than enough. :)What they need is a plain, double tracked line - they can electrify it as part of the 11MP or 12MP or whenever.
Double tracking is far more important than electrification because double tracking allows 10x the number of train movements as compared to single tracking.
That is too good an opportunity to miss out on - which is why the lines to Pasir Gudang and Tg. Pelapas are both single track with a wide right-of-way leaving space for future double tracking.
All future railway construction in Malaysia should be double tracked or single track with wide right of way leaving space for double tracking (and triple/quad tracking in some cases/places)
Cheers, m
TWK90 October 4th, 2010, 07:20 PM I felt at this age, there is no point of building railway line if you do not consider the possibility of double track.
This is because these days, almost all places are connected with road, hence leaving it to be single track for long, will not be good, as it won't be competitive against road travel. Of course, that depends on the location.

Disappointing news: A filepic of a board erected at the site that states the
low-cost flats in Kampung Railway are for existing KTMB staff.
SOME 18 residents at Kampung Railway affected by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) village will be relocated to a nearby low- cost flats soon.
The residents affected are former workers or families of retired KTMB staff who were promised low-cost homes after their service years.
However due to a number of unforeseen reasons, the development was hampered and residents have been fighting for their rights for over 16 years.
Many were unhappy when they found out that the Railway village was only intended for current staff of KTMB. They took the matter to court but they lost the appeal and have been asked to move out by October 11.
Deputy Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) are looking for units close by for the residents before the due date.
Now YTL is in the process of finalising compiled list of house buyers by three different parties including the DBKL, the Kampung Railway Action Committee and YTL.
He said a plot of land has been identified and plans for the low- cost homes have already been submitted to the DBKL. He will urge the developer to complete the houses for the ex-workers by 2012.
“YTL has been very obliging, they have already identified the land which is located close to the current spot. I am sure they will be able to build the homes by 2012,” he added.
Meanwhile the Kampung Railway action committee member M. Sathasivam said they have asked Saravanan to ensure that their houses will not be demolished on October 11 as they have not received offer letters to move into their temporary low-cost flats.
“All we ask is a temporary home nearby,” he added.
Sathasivam said DBKL is looking at PPR Taman Wahyu and Kepong for the affected families to move into.

Forty-five others were also injured in the 7.45pm accident, which occured near the Negri Sembilan-Malacca border here yesterday.

Apparently, out of the 45 injured, four have been rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment, 22 were sent to a hospital in Seremban and 12 to another hospital in Malacca.
The express bus had left Malacca about 45 minutes before the accident and was on its way to Kuala Lumpur.
The accident caused a traffic jam stretching for more than 25km along the expressway.
Of the 12 who died, eight were believed to be passengers from the express bus.
One of them was decapitated.
Two others were from a MyVi, which was crushed by the bus, and another from a Honda Accord.
PLUS officials had to divert motorists at the Pedas/Linggi toll plaza as the south bound lanes were impassable to traffic.
A Plus traffic control centre spokesman said the accident occurred at about 6km from the Simpang Ampat toll near Alor Gajah, Malacca.
“The middle and left lanes for the south-bound traffic were blocked by the vehicles involved in the accident while the right lane for the north-bound traffic was closed to facilitate emergency works at the scene,” he added.

Lempar batu ke arah ETS: KTMB tahan 6 lelaki:ohno:
KUALA LUMPUR 13 Okt.

menamatkan perkhidmatannya malam tadi.
Pengurus Kanan Komunikasi Korporat KTMB, Mohd.

40 locomotives? electric or diesel?
lohxy October 22nd, 2010, 01:17 PM I think diesel because saw the word 'container'.
TWK90 October 23rd, 2010, 09:14 AM I think diesel because saw the word 'container'.
No such thing.
However, if the news report mentions that KTM expects the order to start arrive at 2012, then it might not be electric, as the double tracking and electrification up to Padang Besar may not be ready by 2012.
project aliciel October 23rd, 2010, 09:55 AM it may be a waste if ordered too much diesel locos. because electric locos is much more efficient in near future, since electricfication of whole West Coast line may be ready before 2015.
hafidz jon October 23rd, 2010, 07:14 PM i thought the electrification only up to butterworth.or i'm wrong.the whole part of west coast will be double track electrified.
mrtfreak October 24th, 2010, 02:54 AM Electrification is till Padang Besar in the north, and Gemas to the south. Gemas to JB is single track, non-electrified. Spurs to PTP and Pasir Gudang are single track and non-electrified. This is also probably why they need diesel as these lines are unlikely to be electrified.

nazrey November 16th, 2010, 12:58 PM KTMB-owned ETS now in use for daily commute
Monday November 15, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/11/15/nation/7394260&sec=nation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB)-owned Electric Train Set (ETS), previously only available to passengers on the Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur-Seremban line, is now being used for daily commute to increase the daily passenger capacity, an initiative of the urban public transport NKRA of the GTP.
KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the decision to use the ETS was a temporary solution while waiting for the 38 new electric trains that would only be ready in 2012.
He said there are currently 95,000 passengers who use the commuter service daily and 60,000 of them commute during rush hours.
“In order to provide commuter service every 15 minutes during rush hours, we would need to have 32 commuter trains. Seeing that we only have 27 commuter trains and four locomotive hybrid trains, we needed to use the ETS for the time being,” Aminuddin said.
The ETS has the capacity of 360 seats.
The Hyundai Rotem manufactured train set, would only be used during rush hours through 13 selected stations starting with a round trip from Seremban to Sungai Buloh beginning at 6.15am in the morning.
The train would then travel from Sentul to Seremban beginning at 6.30pm in the evening.
The ETS is only in service from Mondays to Fridays.
project aliciel November 16th, 2010, 03:33 PM The train to Batu Caves delayed 45 mins and arrived in 7:30pm, which supposed to be arrived in 6:43pm. The train arrives Batu Caves in 8:15pm. The train's efficiency is terrible, it suddenly stops like "stop for fun". The train turning back from Batu Caves to Pelabuhan Klang around 8:15pm, and found it having serious technical problem and have to change to board another train in Sentul.
The terrible train is EMU82. The EMU82 looks bad in its interior and the sitting plan is bad. (Don't know how to categorize it, short haul or long haul?!). EMU82 should be decommissioned as soon as possible. I saw quite number of EMU82 in Sentul depot, don't know they are dismantling the train or refurbishing the train. If I'm not wrong there are no more spare parts for EMU82 and EMU81 right?

Report ready soon on rail link to Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu
KUANTAN: Travel to Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu by train may be possible, if the Government agrees to the construction of a railway track from the Klang Valley through to Mentakab, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Tumpat, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said here.
He said a report of a study on the proposed project by a consultant, HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd, was expected to be ready in March and would provide a description of the possible future transportation infrastructure in the East Coast.
"The East Coast route is a comprehensive network not only for cargo but for passengers as well. There is no railway route to Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Baru.
"There is a need for the facility due to the active economic activities there," he told reporters after a working visit to the Kuantan Port here Wednedday.
On the Ipoh-Padang Besar electrified railway double-tracking project, he said it was 50% complete. - Bernama
With this line, it will help increase the rail coverage to the other part of peninsular Malaysia, which is currently underserved, due to the fact the Kuantan, one of largest east coast city is not served, and there is the potential of freight such as Kuantan port.
The challenge would be tunneling, especially across Titiwangsa mountain range. Long tunnels needed, with gentle gradient to enable relatively fast train travel across the tunnel.
It is important for the line to be built as double track, as it will help rail travel to be faster than expressway. Electrification should come second, although clearly, electric operation is very useful in mountainous section. Best if it is built similar to Rawang-Ipoh/ Ipoh-Padang Besar project (electrified double track).
Considering the possible cost, especially the tunnel, it would be better if the tunnel is built not just for metre gauge, but also to be able to fitted with another rail, to make it dual gauge (metre + standard gauge), so that the tunnel will be future-proof. This has been done in Seikan tunnel, Japan when the tunnel is designed to accommodate Shinkansen, even though initially, the tunnel is for narrow gauge operation (140 km/h for passenger trains).

If accepted, then KTMB would not be responsible for the Electrification and Double Tracking of the rail line from Pasir Gudang to Tanjung Pelapas. The concessionaire would build and transfer the service to KTMB.
And instead of facing the challenge of operating a 'komuter selatan' service (with all the PR problems that it entails), KTM can just focus on intercity (which is heavily subsidized) and freight. The concessionaire would operate the Komuter service for 20 years.
It's also possible that the concessionaire would expand to provide short-line freight services (from port to port) leaving KTM to deal with the long-distance and international freight.
It certainly would simplify things for KTMB.
And it looks like the future for KTM is in long distance, not local services.

stingstingsting January 24th, 2011, 12:27 PM Hey i noticed KTMB made a smart move long ago to electrify the network with 25kHz AC, the same as most HSR networks around the world. I'm thinking this would be good in the event that a HSR is to be integrated with the current metre gauge network.
However, would variable gauge axles be a possbility, as they have in Spain? The reason I ask is because the difference in gauge between standard and metre is quite considerable. I know they have experimented with this it in japan, but unfortunately, it didn't work.
Or would Pendolinos on the current network be the beter option, seeing as the network from KL down to Singapore looks like it would eventually be double tracked and hopefully electrified?
TWK90 January 24th, 2011, 12:40 PM Hey i noticed KTMB made a smart move long ago to electrify the network with 25kHz AC, the same as most HSR networks around the world.
The plan as it stands currently for Malaysia is that, if high speed rail is going to be built, it will entirely separate from the existing metre gauge network. The proposed KL-Singapore high speed rail line for example, will have separate infrastructure of which the HSR rolling stock will be kept for the use only in HSR tracks.
Regardless of HSR, the double tracking and electrified of existing metre gauge line has long being planned, way before the KL-Singapore HSR being proposed.
The Klang Valley (the term for greater Kuala Lumpur) lines were double tracked and electrified in early 1990's to provide commuter rail service around Kuala Lumpur and its environs.
After Klang Valley, the northern section (Rawang-Ipoh) was the next section being electrified and double track, with freight and long distance express trains in mind.
Currently, the electrified double tracking projects are being implemented on northern sections such as (Ipoh-Padang Besar) and southern section such as (Seremban-Gemas), all with freight and long distance commuting in mind.
Regardless of the progress of HSR, electrification and double tracking of metre gauge lines will continue :)
About the choice of 25 kV AC for metre gauge lines, i am not sure of the exact reasons, but i doubt it has anything to do with future HSR running to existing metre gauge lines via variable gauge axle system because, as i mentioned earlier, HSR will be entirely separate.
25 kV AC is technically superior because it has longer distance between substations and the fact that the project was being implemented in 1990's, there is no reason for us to go for DC :)

Komuter KTMB Tergendala Dari Laluan Bank Negara Ke Rawang Dan Batu Caves

nazrey February 28th, 2011, 11:33 AM Ladies’ coach: KTM must solve the real problem
2011/02/27 AAFINA ZAMIL, Sungai Petani, Kedah
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles//18ladies/Article/
I REFER to the letter, "Men, stop this invasion" (NST, Feb 9) on men getting onto the ladies' coaches. The writer has expressed dissatisfaction over finding men in these coaches.
Although men have no excuse to be in the ladies' coach, the whole idea of the introduction of this coach by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) to offset allegedly lecherous men groping and molesting women is indeed a regressive, knee-jerk reaction to the age-old problem of overcrowded coaches and commuters.
To simply accuse all men of such indecency is unfair when the crux of the problem is the inefficiency of KTMB, which is unable to accommodate the large number of commuters in its coaches.
The irregularity of services and frequent breakdowns have resulted in trains coming late and overcrowded. As a result of the overcrowding, men and women are in close proximity with one another.
There was never any action by KTMB to control and supervise the number of people on the platforms in the stations.
When trains come packed, people on the platforms, men and women, push and shove one another to get into the already-packed trains.
KTMB officials were never seen controlling or managing the crowd on the platform or in coaches.
And many commuters stood at the doorways and refused to move into the aisle and this, too, caused a lot of pushing and shoving. During such close bodily contact with people breathing down the backs of one another, some form of proximity could have been breached accidentally or unknowingly.
Any which way you stand, you are bound to knock and rub into someone.
The ladies' coach concept has "Nothing to do with politics or religion" (NST, May 20) but everything to do with overcrowding.
Therefore, the whole problem of the alleged groping and molesting is a result of the overcrowding of coaches during peak periods. KTMB is unable to handle the onslaught of human bodies pushing and shoving themselves into packed coaches.
The problem still exists, the only difference is that men are pitted against men to get the right of way into the packed mixed coaches. A sneeze or a cough has everyone closing their nostrils for fear of contamination.
Another reason given by KTMB for the introduction of the ladies' coach is that women made up 60 per cent of its commuters. This is an erroneous figure as more men use the service during weekends and peak periods.
The ladies' coaches are rarely crowded while the coaches for men and women are packed and crowded. So what is the big deal if a few men get into the ladies' coach when it is half empty.
To overcome the problem of "pushing and shoving", KTMB officials must monitor the crowds on the platforms and devise an orderly queue management system.
KTMB officials must be present at strategic stations such as KL Sentral, Mid Valley, Serdang and Kajang on the Seremban-bound line. The officials should limit the number of commuters embarking on coaches.
Finally, the best solution to overcome the "pushing and shoving" would be to get more coaches to accommodate the growing number of public transport users.

I HAVE been a regular user of Klang Valley's public transportation system for many years now. I applaud KTMB's move to provide ladies' coaches.
I recently travelled in one of these coaches. It gave me a feeling of security given the fact that I was travelling at night and alone.
To my surprise, however, it wasn't very long before a number of men started to fill up the seats.
There are pink signs strategically placed on every window to indicate that it is a ladies' coach. So, I do not know which I find more disturbing: the fact that some people are just plain ignorant or that they really do not know what the sign means.

1. Definitely a possibility, as KTMB is already getting old trains from JR, new trains from Rotem.
2. definitely necessary - it's quite possible that land has been shifting over the past few years.
3. As with #2 above, the upgrade is definitely needed but very tough. Another proposal, to build a set of double-track tunnels underground (giving a total of 4-tracks) between the junctions would cost about RM12 billion.
4. If SPAD and Prasarana work together to create a local public transport authority like Transport for London (Rapid for KL) then KTM Komuter services can be contracted to the authority (or taken over by the authority or Prasarana).

Singapore to conserve historic railway stations
Two railway stations to be returned by Malaysia to Singapore will be conserved as historic sites, officials announced Friday following a citizens' campaign to save the buildings from destruction.
There were fears that the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, located on prime real estate on the fringes of the central business district, would be turned into yet another shopping mall or condominium in construction-mad Singapore.
A government statement said the art deco-style terminal would be a national monument, while the smaller Bukit Timah station close to the Malaysian border would also be conserved, in recognition of their "deep historical significance".
Both were built during British colonial rule over the two countries as part of a railway line that serviced Singapore, Malaya and Thailand.
The Malaysian federation retained ownership of railway land and structures within Singapore after the two countries separated in 1965, and the stations became part of a long-running spat that periodically strained relations.
In May 2010, both countries agreed Malaysia would cede ownership of the land in exchange for real estate in two of Singapore's most expensive districts.
The agreement sparked concerns that the Singapore government would convert the shabby buildings to commercial use, triggering an online petition to save the buildings for posterity.
Carolyn Seet, an information technology specialist who started the petition, welcomed the government's announcement on the Tanjong Pagar station.
"Needless to say, I'm very happy. Hopefully, they will keep it open to the public. My wish is basically it will be a transportation museum like the one in London," she told AFP.
She also suggested the station can be "a place for people to reminisce, and see how far Singapore has come, from the humble rickshaw to the modern driverless" train system.

Final Report On East Coast Railway Project To Be Completed Soon
April 14, 2011 16:44 PM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/state_news/news.php?id=579077&cat=et
KUANTAN, April 14 (Bernama) -- The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) is in the process of completing its final report on the possible east coast railway project linking Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan-Tumpat, which covers a distance of 550km.
State Housing, Basic Infrastructure and Transportation Committee Chairman Datuk Mohd Soffi Abdul Razak said that the Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan route would involve five districts -- Bentong, Bera, Temerloh, Maran and Kuantan.
"This project will make an impact on Pahang's social and economic sectors, especially in the districts affected," he said in response to a question from Datuk Chuan Boon Seong (BN-Mentakab) at the state assembly sitting here on Thursday.
He said the project would create more employment for people through the development of projects, such as the Kuantan Port City project, Oil Palm Industrial Cluster, Wood Industrial Park in Temerloh, Pahang Technology Park and the Bentong Mixed Industrial Park, along the route.
Besides that, he said the districts involved would progress and develop with a more modern and efficient transportation network connecting them to the Klang Valley.
Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said that the state government would take action under the National Land Code 1965 against Temporary Occupation Licence (TOL) operators who flouted approval requirements by planting on a permanent basis for cash-crop projects.
He said that they had carried out some enforcement measures, such as patrols on rule violations.
"The Land Administrator can cancel the TOL. Continuous monitoring will also be carried out to ensure the problem does not recur," he said in response to a question from Syed Hamid Syed Mohamed (PAS-Kuala Semantan).
Adnan said 114.118 hectares of land in Temerloh, Jerantut, Lipis and Raub had been identified as flouting TOL approval requirements by growing permanent crops.
He added that action had been taken on 42.09 hectares of land, while action needed to be taken on another 73.03 hectares.

JOHOR BARU: About 700 squatter families living on KTM Berhad land were to have been evicted today but are breathing a sigh of relief after being promised alternative sites.
State MIC chairman Datuk K.S. Balakrishnan said those affected, 70% of whom are Indians, would be provided housing in the affected areas.
“The families have been living along the 100km KTMB land that in Kluang, Renggam, Layang-Layang, Labis and Segamat,” he said here yesterday.
He said Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had agreed to the families staying on there until alternative sites were provided.
The squatters were issued eviction notices, with an April 27 deadline, by the Railway Assets Corporation as the double-tracking railway project spans from Gemas to Johor Baru.
Balakrishnan added that the government had identified plots of agriculture land in Kahang and Kluang as alternative sites.
“Currently, we have identified 250ha in Kahang and another 60ha in Kluang,” he said.
“Some of the occupants do not want monetary compensation and prefer houses as they have no property of their own,” Balakrishnan said.
Unity, Human Resources, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan said the state government would ensure that the land offered was relevant to the squatters’ needs.
“We will also make sure that they are given priority to low-cost houses in the area,” he said.
He cautioned the squatters against vacating their homes unless a notice was issued to them from an authorised agency.
“Those who have doubts should contact the state government or the MIC.”

^^
That's ridiculous, its a transportation service, not a jewelery shop...I think this is branding gone over-board. A name should be intuitive.
The name 'transit' is fair enough, while the others could be replaced with age-old and effective names like local, semi express, express etc.
And don't get me started on why they have to set up separate ticket counters for ETS and intercity services...:ohno::ohno:

Cadangan khidmat tren Seremban-Port Dickson dikaji: Kong
2011/05/24
SEREMBAN: Menteri Pengangkutan, Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, berkata pihaknya sedia mengkaji cadangan kerajaan Negeri Sembilan untuk menghidupkan semula khidmat tren pelancongan Seremban-Port Dickson.
- BERNAMA

TWK90 June 8th, 2011, 01:52 PM How about a slight detour Seremban-KLIA-PD then to Melaka:lol:Highly unlikely but it would be nice ha.
A branch line would be good, say from Nilai, then to KLIA, to Seremban, PD, then to Melaka, before merging with the main line, probably at Tampin station.
However, I would like to see expansion of tracks (wherever possible in Klang Valley), because Klang Valley KTM lines are getting congested, even more so with future Komuter operation with higher frequency.

ya true....because KV population exceed more than 6 million people...of course they deserve better public transport like MRT...
what to do all aggressive development of public transport only focused on KV area and not other capital states...we have to accept that...
if other capital states have population merely 4 million and above there will be a good allocation of fund to make any progress on LRT or BRT lines...

nazrey June 14th, 2011, 06:02 AM Tickets snapped up for KTMB’s final Tanjong Pagar service
2011/06/14
By Atiqa Hazellah http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/TicketssnappedupforKTMB__8217_sfinalTanjongPagarservice/Article/
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 170 people will be on the last train out of Tanjong Pagar station in Singapore on June 30, but chances are, they will not be rushing to get aboard before the green flag signifying the start of the journey is waved.
Almost all of the 172 tickets for the final journey were snapped up after they went on sale at noon yesterday, pointing to the possibility that many wanted to be a part of the historic occasion.
Just five hours after the ticket counters opened for business, the second class sleeping coach tickets were sold out, while the first and second class coaches had only two and 56 tickets left, respectively.
The Ekspres Senandung Sutera locomotive will depart at 10pm from the Tanjong Pagar station, breaking the silence of the darkness of the night for one last time. The express train service ends at the Kuala Lumpur Sentral station.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd corporate communications executive Kelvin Khew said a sending-off celebration would be organised to commemorate the historic occasion. “The celebration will start at 11pm with many activities lined up, (including) selling the train’s memorabilia.” Besides that, said Khew, an exhibition would be held at the Tanjong Pagar station from June 26 to 29, in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia.
The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, will drive a special train from Tanjong Pagar and stop at the Woodlands Immigration checkpoint, then continue to Johor Baru Sentral after getting a licence last year.
Meanwhile, a page has been set up by several people on social networking site Facebook.
Called “The Last Train Into Tanjong Pagar”, it has already accumulated 357 fans since it was created earlier this month.
Most of them expressed their sadness over the closure of the Tanjong Pagar station.
On July 1, the curtains will come down on the Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah stations in Singapore as KTMB terminates its rail services in the republic south of the Woodlands train checkpoint.
The Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah stations have been providing rail services for Malaysians and Singaporeans since 1932 and 1915, respectively. The Tanjong Pagar site and other KTMB land parcels in the island republic will be jointly developed by MS Pte Ltd, a company with a 60 per cent stake held by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and 40 per cent by Temasek Holdings Ltd.
This was agreed upon during a series of bilateral meetings which also involved Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Singapore counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, last year.

gabriellim June 28th, 2011, 09:50 PM Farewell Tanjong Pagar!~
http://shin.disagrees.net/?p=518
Elsewhere in the world, people of all nations are "building bridges". They open more trade routes and channels for easier travelling. In ancient time, there was Silk Road linking China to the Mediterranean. With Channel Tunnel came Eurostar, London, Paris and Brussels was never closer before. USA, where currently intercity railroad is transporting merely 0.03% of all trips, is building 13 corridors of High Speed Rail (HSR). Closer to home, Indonesians are trying to realise a decade if not century-long dream, of building a 20 km road and rail bridge to connect Java and Sumatra.
This is the era of Globalisation, they are all busy "closing the gaps". With wide gaps closed, plenty of opportunities will be opened, and ties strengthen. But over here, we are unfortunately regressing. I have never thought of this heartbreaking event coming our way, but ultimately come it will, nevertheless.
History of Railway in British Malaya
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMB_125th_01.jpg
Serving the nation since 1885.
This time a year ago, in the middle of June 2010, we celebrated the 125th anniversary of rail transport in Malaysia. Apart from human capital and institutional integrity, an efficient transportation network is also a pre-requisite for the nation's political, economic and social progress, among others. British Malaya with her abundance of natural resources was a huge magnet for economic exploration, therefore it's not surprising that the first railway in the country was constructed to connect the tin-mining hub of Taiping to the nearby harbour at Port Weld, a.k.a. Kuala Sepetang, and opened to traffic on June 1st,1885.
Kuala Lumpur, another mining town, was connected to Klang in September 1886, and the line was extended to Port Swettenham (Port Klang) three years later. Sungei Ujong (Seremban) was connected to Port Dickson in 1891. Two years later, Telok Anson was connected to Tapah Road. However, they were all operated by individual states separately. With the formation of the Federated Malay States (FMS), comprising Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Pahang in 1896, a newly formed operator - Federated Malay States Railway (FMSR) took over the segmented lines, with a vision to amalgamate them all.
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_tank_road_station_01.jpg
Tank Road Station, Singapore - Kranji Railway.
As the administrative headquarters of the Straits Settlements, Singapore began planning for railway as early as 1869. However, she only saw its first railway line completed in January 1st 1903, when the railway between town centre and Bukit Timah was opened. Three months later on April 10th, the segment linking Bukit Timah to Woodlands was also completed. The system was named Singapore - Kranji Railway.
The terminus was located at Tank Road (near River Valley Road), and the line ran through what is Orchard Road and Bukit Timah Road today, with stations in Newton and Cluny as well. It is worthwhile to note that the Newton station then was said to be occupying the same location as the Newton MRT station today.

The end of the track in Woodlands before the construction of Causeway.
Two ferries named "Johore" and "Singapore" respectively were used to ferry rail passengers across the Tebrau Straits, linking Johor Bahru and Singapore, until the completion of Causeway in 1923 that enabled seamless travel between Singapore and the rest of the country. With the West Coast Main Line linking Butterworth and Johor Bahru completed in 1909, and work on East Coast Line connecting Tumpat to Gemas concluded in 1931, Singapore became an important terminus of the country's transportation system.
In the year of 1918, the properties and estates held by the Singapore Government Railway were sold to the Government of the Federated Malay States for $4,136,000, and a land lease of 999 years was given. As a result, the Singapore railway became physically an integral part of the FMSR network. In the 1920s, realignment of railway between Bukit Timah and Singapore town centre was planned. A new line would be constructed to link Bukit Timah to a new station in Keppel Road in the Tanjong Pagar area, which is a stone's throw away from the docks. The line was completed in 1932.

Newly opened Tanjong Pagar station.
After Tank Road sent off its last train to Kuala Lumpur on 8:30pm, May 2nd, 1932 (Monday), stations on the old line including Tank Road, Newton, Cluny and old Bukit Timah stations were permanently closed on the very same midnight, and beginning the next morning all trains would terminate at the new station in Tanjong Pagar instead.
The new Tanjong Pagar station was officially opened by Governor of Straits Settlement, Sir Cecil Clementi at 5:15 pm on May 2nd 1932. There were other halts along the way, including Kranji, Mandai, Bukit Panjang, Tanglin and Alexandra, but over time they ceased to function one by one.

Beautiful Bukit Timah station.
After the Second World War, Straits Settlement and FMS was disbanded, all their member states (minus Singapore) together with the unfederated states of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Trengganu and Johor was injected into a new entity called Malayan Union, while Singapore was carved out as a Crown colony. Malayan Union became Federation of Malaya in 1948, and achieved her independence on August 31st, 1957. Accordingly, FMSR was transformed into Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), and later corporatised as Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).
Singapore gained self-governance in 1955, voted for a merger with Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak to form Malaysia in a 1962 national referendum, and after a postponement from the previously decided date of August 31st, 1963, Malaysia was officially formed on September 16th, 1963, some said to coincide with then Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew's birthday. However, due to irreconcilable differences, Singapore was expelled unilaterally by Tunku Abdul Rahman, then Prime Minister on August 9th, 1965, shocking the King as well as all the citizens. Malaysia was partitioned, and the rest is herstory. Thank God, the vital railway service was not affected significantly, at least for the time being.
Eyeing The Railway Land
On the last day before stepping down as Prime Minister of Singapore, November 27th, 1990, Lee Senior visited Kuala Lumpur and signed a comprehensive deal, albeit a raw deal, with then Finance Minister of Malaysia, Daim Zainuddin. This set of raw deals were aimed to solve a host of outstanding inherited bilateral issues, including the use of Malaysian airspace by Royal Singaporean Air Force (RSAF) jets, withdrawal of Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings by West Malaysians et cetera, but unsurprisingly the most controversial was the railway, which the ruling family of Singapore was eager to get rid off.
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_bukit_timah_03.JPG
Railwayfans visiting Bukit Timah at the turn of the century.
The rulers of Singapore was offering a few reasons why KTM should go. Among them, the narrow strip of land corridor occupied by the railway is cutting Singapore into two halves. Since the customs and immigration posts of both Singapore and Malaysia are located in Tanjong Pagar station, undocumented migrants might jump off somewhere along the track to enter Singapore without Malaysian and Singaporean immigration clearance. Similarly, they also claimed that criminals onboard the train might sneak in contraband such as narcotics into Singapore by tossing it onto the land beside the railway before reaching the checkpoint in Tanjong Pagar, and come pick it up later.
Are these concerns justified? They are. And we will examine it one by one. But isn't there any meaningful solution, apart from scrapping off the railway system altogether? Why not implement any of the solutions? Probably if the problems are solved and railway remains, their ultimate motive of grabbing the railway land for "development" would take a back seat again.
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_tanjong_pagar_03.jpg
Malaysian Immigration and Custom posts stayed put in Tanjong Pagar.
When Singapore's immigration and customs post were located in Tanjong Pagar, the possibility of illegal entry and smuggling was true, at least on paper. However, since 1999, Singapore has relocated its checkpoints to Woodlands. Now with immigration and customs clearance conducted in Woodlands as soon as trains enter Singapore, the worries are eliminated once and for all. Of course, having to alight the train and wait for everyone to complete the immigration clearance before resuming the journey sometimes take as long as one hour. But that at least render some of Singapore's excuse to get rid of the railway irrelevant.
Next, does the railway track cut Singapore into half? Yes. Is it a huge hindrance to development that is insurmountable? There are plenty of other railway tracks and highways that cuts the city into pockets. For example, the elevated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) beyond Bishan, Tiong Bahru and Kallang all splits their left from their right. Okay, they are elevated, at least the ground level is passable.
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_tanglin_halt.JPG
Republic of Singapore West and Republic of Singapore East...
There are also numerous expressways, which are not exactly elevated. For instance, East Coast Parkway (ECP) cuts off neighbourhoods such as Tanjong Katong and Marine Parade from the East Coast Park. Otherwise, why is the need for pedestrian tunnels? Similarly, Nature Society (Singapore) (NSS) has been arguing that by cutting Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR) away from the larger Central Catchment Area, Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) has effectively made life more difficult for wildlife in BTNR, especially in aspects such as feeding and breeding.
Choa Chu Kang is split by Kranji Expressway (KJE), Clementi by Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), Eunos by Pan Island Expressway (PIE). If you have a copy of Singapore Public Transport Map (New 2010/2011 edition) published by Mighty Minds, from Maps 1 to 22, I find only Map 1 Kranji, Lim Chu Kang area, Map 3 Sembawang, Yishun area, and Map 16 Jurong Island is not cut through by surface level expressways. Why don't the government convert them all underground, into something like Central Expressway (CTE)'s Chin Swee Tunnel and Kampong Java Tunnel, or the newly built largely underground Kallang - Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE)?
So, why only single out the railway? Why not ask it to be elevated?
Failure of Southern Commuter System to Take Off
There was, actually, a plan to double track and electrify the railway in the Southern part of Malaysia, after Commuter trains were introduced in Klang Valley. The mainline from Kulai to Johor Bahru and Tanjong Pagar, as well as the spur line to Plentong and Pasir Gudang, was supposed to be double tracked and electrified. If that was meant to be, coupled with sufficient rolling stocks, a frequent and safe mode of transport is created. It could operate like other MRT lines in Singapore, set up interchange with other lines to enable seamless transfer, for example in Buona Vista, Kranji and Bukit Panjang (I would love cross-platform transfer but that is not possible), and best of all, it crosses the border into Johor.

Realising that this was actually possible, the rulers of Singapore added another condition. They wanted the line to be powered by third rail on the side, instead of overhead catenary lines. This was actually not unreasonable, bearing in mind that Singapore needs to maintain a pleasant landscape, and we all know how high tension cables (and not so much overhead catenary lines) have spoilt our view everywhere in Malaysia. Some rapid transit systems in the world do use overhead catenary lines, such as the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong. But since Singaporean regime made it the prerequisite, I really have no idea why the Umno Barisan Nasional regime insists against it, by arguing overhead catenary allows for faster trains.
Had KTM's Southern Komuter service taken off, where people depends on it to travel across the countryside in a more speedy manner, public opinion alone would have halt the impending scrapping of this line. Unfortunately, by insisting for the overhead catenary line that enables faster trains, and reluctant to power the future Southern Komuter system through third rail, we in the end lost the whole railway altogether.

Singapore signal box
Apparently, cutting the city state into half, undocumented disembarkation or smuggling are not solid ground to argue for the scrapping of railway. However, logical deductive reasoning only work when one is debating with a logical and rational partner, and also I seriously doubt the ability of our negotiators to present proper arguments like what we just did. See their embarrassing outing to the International Court of Justice over Pulau Batu Putih / Pedra Branca issue and you get what I mean.
Perception of KTM vs Potential of Railway
The last time I count, there were only seven trips between Singapore and Malaysia daily, namely day and night trips to Kuala Lumpur, day and night trips to Tumpat, one trip to Butterworth, and two mail trains to Gemas and Kuala Lipis respectively. Without frequent services, KTM is regarded by many as archaic and inefficient. However, reluctance of Umno Barisan Nasional regime to double track the system timely as the need arise was a major contributor to this.
Surely, with only metre gauge, single tracks, diesel locomotives and shortage of coaches, there is only so much we can do. Hence the frequent late arrival, faulty aircon, waiting eternally for bypassing other trains all formed the chief complaints the general public held against KTM. Not just Singaporeans, but middle class Malaysians as well. Thanks to this perception, every opportunity is capitalised by certain quarters to get rid of the historical railway.
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_bukit_timah_05.jpg
"Is it time for KTM to go?"
Even then, railway has several advantages over other modes of transport between the two capitals. First of all, it is downtown to downtown. The railway stations in Tanjong Pagar and KL Sentral are closer to respective town centres, compared to airport or coach terminal. Both KLIA and Changi are faraway. In Kuala Lumpur, South-bound coach terminal was just relocated from Puduraya to Bandar Tasik Selatan, whereas in Singapore, there's not even a centralised terminal, thus Transnasional terminates in Lavender Street, Sri Maju in Golden Mile, First Coach in Novena Square, so on and so forth. Railway is the only mode of transport without the need to pay toll, airport tax, fuel surcharge, or to check in two hours early. And it definitely spares us of the brutal, tragic, fatal highway accidents.
Whatever the current deficiencies of KTM are, these are not excuses to disregard the advantages of a modern railway system. Malaysia may be a perfectly mismanaged country, but I am sure one day there will be talents who can modernise the system, provided there is time and financial resources. To deprive the chance to modernise the system is thus a huge injustice. New technologies, new attitude and new work culture will ensure a safe and convenient travel, but if the strip of land for tracks is confiscated today, where are we supposed to build High Speed lines in the future? The way I look at it's, this is throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
Railwayfan STN said it categorically in his forum post,
Quote:
"Even if it were to close, public opinion should have sought (through referendum) beforehand instead of relying on simple agreement between two men at one meeting. If for example 51% of people say yes through referendum to close then at least I am still willing to suck my thumb...
What's more, the lack of foresight to build a much better alternative to replace KTM before letting such line closures to happen is another thing which I am even more disappointed at."
We don't know whether the future High Speed Railway linking KL and Singapore will materialise. I ain't a big fan of High Speed Rail either. However, for me it is immaterial. Land-scarce Hong Kong didn't dismantle the Kowloon - Cantoon Railway (now MTR East Rail) in anticipation of the Beijing - Hong Kong High Speed Rail to be built come next decade. New York still has the Pennsylvania Station -- one of the busiest intercity and commuter station in the world -- in central Manhattan, where land is even pricier, population density higher than in Singapore. State of Penang will never asked the train to stop at the border at Nibong Tebal, force all passengers to take bus to the Kedah border town of Pinang Tunggal, in order to resume the train journey. So, what's so uniquely Singapore?
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_woodlands_checkpoint_01.JPG
Woodlands Train Checkpoint, the new KTM Southern terminus...
Some claim, with Thomson Line MRT, Woodlands - JB Rapid Transit System (RTS) targeted to complete by 2018, and the future High Speed Rail, travelling from downtown KL to downtown Singapore need just 3 hours. But all these projects are still on paper only, nothing more than the proposed Malacca - Dumai bridge or the Penang Monorail. We run the risk of "<em>yang dikejar tak dapat, yang dikendung keciciran</em>" -- losing what we had without achieving what we want.
Why not follow the more prudent way, build the Thomson Line MRT and Woodlands - JB RTS first, see whether Intercity passengers prefer to switch at JB Sentral and ride the new alternative into downtown Singapore, or would they follow the old way? Competition will tell us which is more popular, then we can decide whether to close the KTM line.
When Razak Junior and Lee Junior met on May 24th, 2010 to announce the demise of KTM in Singapore after a secret four-eye meeting, both seemed delighted. It was only said both countries will increase bus routes (so Johoreans can visit Marina Bay Sands and Resort World Sentosa easier), and Singaporeans will invest more in Iskandar Malaysia. CPF, sales of sand, use of airspace by RSAF jets were not touch upon at all. Six plots of KTM land in Tanjong Pagar, Bukit Timah, Kranji and Woodlands will be swapped for four in Marina Bay and two in Rochor area for future development. But no amount of new shopping malls, hotels and skycrappers will facilitate easier, speedier and more affordable transportation between the two nations, will they?
http://shin.disagrees.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KTMS_woodlands_checkpoint_02.JPG
Confusing signs contradicting one another in Woodlands Tran Checkpoint...
In the end, Umno Barisan Nasional regime and the ruling family of Singapore will be laughing all the way to the bank. They don't allow sales of sand to Singapore, but they can't care less about constant outflow of brainy kids lured by scholarships, who will reside and work in Singapore after their study. Half million of Malaysians working in Singapore now will be deprived of a trustworthy way to balik kampung during festive seasons or elections. So where is the priority?
The Straits Times on the 11th of April 1903 published a description of the first "through train" journey:
Quote:
"The first through train left 'Singapore' station at Tank Road punctually at 7 o’clock yesterday morning for 'Woodlands', at the Johore end of Singapore, a little run of fifteen miles. The train consisted of seven carriages and was well filled with a very cosmopolitan lot of passengers."
The article also described the marvellous scene along the line from Bukit Timah towards Woodlands in these beautiful words:
Quote:
"The line runs through some of the prettiest country in the island and the lover of tropical scenery will be delighted with the trip."

The good old time...
After running for 107 years, not all are delighted. You don't usher in a new era of integration by disintegrating the transportation links. The decommissioning of KTM railway track along Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar is indeed among the most tragic event in recent years. A vital link to strengthen bilateral ties is gone for good. I have never seriously thought of it coming our way, yet it came nevertheless. Farewell Tanjong Pagar, farewell Temasek, you will be dearly missed!
p/s: Wish all friends riding the last train out of Tanjong Pagar (http://www.ktmrailwayfan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4006&start=195&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=) a pleasant and memorable journey. JOHOR BARU: The last train out of Tanjong Pagar tonight will be Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s farewell to the 79-year-old railway station in Singapore.
Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar will be in the driver’s seat of the symbolic train service that will depart the railway station about 11pm.
The last train service, Ekspres Senandung Malam, will depart at 10pm. From tomorrow, southbound trains will end their journey at Singapore’s Woodlands Train Checkpoint near the Johor border.
KTMB Tanjong Pagar station manager Shamsul Bahri Sahri, one of the 67 Singapore-based KTMB personnel going home, said the railway line, and the Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah (located between Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands) stations in the republic were a repository of history.
“It would be a lie if I said that I would not be saddened by the handover of the Tanjong Pagar station on Friday,” said the 43-year-old, who served in Tanjong Pagar for 15 years.
Stanley Tan, a member of the Singapore-based KTM Railway Fan Club, said: “We hope to be part of the last train back to Johor as it will be a start to a new future.”
Tan, who chronicles the history of railways in Malaysia and Singapore, said his club was planning a small gathering to commemorate the occasion tonight.
The train service to Tanjong Pagar was introduced in 1932 as a trade link between vegetable and agricultural producers on the mainland and Singapore.
The 45-minute train ride from here to Singapore was a relaxing way to enter the republic.
It was an alternative to the traffic crawl on the Causeway.
Located in Keppel Road, Tanjong Pagar was chosen as the site of the railway station to realise the British’s vision of creating an extensive transport network across land and sea at that time.
The last train out puts into effect a Malaysian-Singapore agreement that will see the development of KTMB land parcels in the republic by M-S Pte Ltd, a company owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.

It was a poignant scene at the station's platforms when the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar himself drove out the last train from the station at 11pm, marking the end of a long chapter in KTMB's history.
SINGAPORE: After 80 years of faithful service, the curtains came down on Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) Tanjung Pagar railway station here tonight.
Eyes were moist in the people gathered as it was a very sentimental moment. It was the southernmost station in KTMB's railway network.
At the stroke of midnight tonight, the station, which has been operation since 1932, ceased all operations and from Friday (July 1), KTMB's train service from Singapore to the peninsula will operate from the Woodlands railway station.
The Sultan of Johor accompanied by his son Tengku Temenggong, Tengku Idris and daughter Tengku Amina had arrived at the station at 10.20pm and were taken on a tour of it by the station's management.
Thousands of people and a horde of media personnel were at the station to witness the historic occasion. -- BERNAMA

AnuarHisham July 6th, 2011, 05:43 PM First China Made EMU For KTM Commuter Service To Arrive Before September
From Alan Ting
ZHUZHOU (Southeast China), July 6 (Bernama) -- The first consignment of 38 Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) units of six-car trains ordered by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) for commuter services will arrive in Malaysia before September, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.
He said the EMU, build by China state owned CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd (CSR ZELC) were well ahead of the schedule with the first consignment expected to be put into service before the end of this year.
"The delivery will be in stages with full delivery of the total 38 EMUs by June next year," he told Malaysian reporters here after "the roll out ceremony" for the first of the 38 EMU sets of the six-car trains ordered by KTMB at SCR ZELC plant here.
Also present were the Governor of Hunan Province Xu Shousheng, chairman of CSR ZELC Zhao Xiaogang and KTMB President Dr Aminuddin Adnan.
KTMB has signed an agreement with ZELC, a well known China EMU builder on May 19 last year to purchase custom-build EMU sets of the six-car trains for commuter service in Klang Valley under the government's National Key Results Areas (NKRA) for public transport. Kong said the custom build EMU specifically to run on Malaysia meter gauge (measuring one metre or 3 ft, 33/8 inches wide) which can travel up to 140 km/h.
He said the purchase of 38 EMUs cost RM1.89 billion and was awarded to ZELC based on the lowest price offered in their bid for the government procurement tender.
"The contract does not include Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) which we are still looking into awarding soon," he said.
The trains of six sets has a futuristic design, using latest train technology from China with two KTM engineers based here for the past three months to ensure all systems follow the specifications set by KTM.
Each train set is capable of carrying about 900 passengers and this means KTM can double its passenger transport rate as well shorten the waiting period from currently 30 minutes to 10 and to only seven and half minute at peak hours.
Meanwhile, Dr Aminuddin said the 38 new EMUs will be used to serve the routes between Rawang-Sungai Gadut, Batu Caves-Port Klang, Sentul-Port Klang and Batu Caves-Rawang.
He said with the entry of new EMUs from China, the usage of "EMU hybrid' will be reduced.
KTMB had introduced the use of EMU Hybrid trains since last year to overcome the problem of cancellation, delays and shortage of trains.
The KTM Komuter EMU Hybrid sets use diesel locomotive power with the help of power-generating car that provides electricity for their air-conditioners, public address system and automatic doors.

We have learned that:
KTM will build a "bypass" route for freight trains to avoid the Klang Valley;
This line will be routed from Batu Tiga to Sg. Buloh;
The line will probably be an extension of the Sri Subang spur line (which links Batu Tiga to Subang Airport);
TRANSIT has expressed our preference for the original proposal, a complete bypass of the Klang Valley from Alor Gajah - Port Klang - Batu Gajah;

tunomura July 16th, 2011, 08:41 AM Disruption of KTM services at KL station
KUALA LUMPUR: All Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) services passing Kuala Lumpur station were disrupted after a crane toppled at platform 4 at KM 387.3 at 12.44am Saturday.
The incident occurred when the 60 tonne crane was removing advertising billboards and unipoles near the station's platform 4.
"The crane failed to stabilise and toppled on the roof and electrification cables at platform 4, 3 and 2, rendering them impassable. Only platform 1 can be used," KTMB said in a statement Saturday.
No casualties were reported but work to remove the structure, cleaning and re-installation of damaged cables will go on until Monday.
KTM will provide a bus service to transfer train passengers from Bank Negara station to KL Sentral and from KL Sentral to Bank Negara for the onward journey.
For ETS service from KL Sentral to Ipoh, it will start and end at Sentul station while the Seremban-Ipoh service will end at KL Sentral station and passengers will board buses to Sentul station to proceed.
The bus service starts at 6am until the last service at 11.45pm and services will continue until the clean-up is completed.
For KTM Cargo and Intercity services, it will only operate one line at platform 1 and will slow down near the scene causing passengers delay of 30 minutes to one hour. - Bernama

Good if we can take train to the newly upgraded Tampin / Pulau Sebang KTM station, and drive to Malacca town centre once we reach. But the pre-requisite is, KTM must add autoracks to their consist, so we can drive our cars into their trains.
Seriously I doubt it can be done since KTM is running on metre gauge. So if impossible, a spur line to Malacca town please. Then we can discuss whether to link it upward to Port Dickson, KLIA and Nilai, and downward to Muar, Batu Pahat, Pontian, Nusajaya and JB Sentral.

asd5139 July 26th, 2011, 07:42 AM When? To be exact... i don't know. Since the videos is posted on 22nd of July.. High probably within the last 2 weeks.
Where? From the videos.. it shows that the train is bound to Ipoh from KL Sentral when it suddenly stalled somewhere... before being towed by locomotive to the nearest KTM station which is Serendah...
Why? The vid says that the train happened to have electrical problems (understood as the problem is the train not others)..
Sadly.. after waiting for such long hours, the were asked to get into the next train with some/probably most of them need to stand for the next 1-2hours journey. If I were them, i would ask for refund.
Maybe Mr. Moaz can ask KTM of what was the exact cause of the problem of this newly bought train.

Railwaymen to protest against KTM President's contract renewal
2011/07/26
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Railwaymen's Union of Malaya are planning a peaceful picket at the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) headquarters compound on Friday to protest the renewal of contract of KTM President, Dr Aminuddin Adnan for two years from Aug 1.
Union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan claimed that they had obtained approval from Dang Wangi police to hold the picket from 6pm and that about 1,000 KTM workers are expected to take part.
Speaking at a news conference, Abdul Razak said the extension of Aminuddin's
contract has created uneasiness with the union, as according to him, Aminuddin
has a negative attitude towards the union. - Bernama
Old news:
Railwaymen’s union objects to KTM subsidiary for ETS
PETALING JAYA: The Railway*men’s Union of Malaysia has objected to plans to set up a subsidiary company for KTM Bhd’s (KTMB) Electric Train Set (ETS).
Union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan said this was an “unwise move” that would not only affect KTMB’s core business but also liquidate its revenue, as it would be channelled to the subsidiary.
“We strongly object to the KTMB management’s decision to create an ETS subsidiary. It is also not practical as there are only five ETS sets.
“There is no need for a subsidiary. The KTMB management can set up a new department or a new strategy business unit by just appointing a managing director to oversee the ETS unit.
“This will not only save administration costs but also increase KTMB’s revenue,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Abdul Razak also listed 14 reasons and claims why the move should be shot down, including the fact that the government allocation was to KTMB and not to any subsidiary.
The union, Abdul Razak said, was appealing to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to step in and help resolve the issue, adding that an objection letter was sent to the KTMB president, Najib and Members of Parliament.
KTM really2, badly need for restructuring...need for new progressive business model, need for company road map and masterplan..need to seek for strategic partners...get rid of cronysm (example; you only can join KTM if you have good cable inside) ...My hope for KTM was too high and I love KTM so much :bash:

On track: Kong (third from right) launching the first EMU train built by CSR
Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd at its factory in China earlier this month.
ZHUZHOU: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will receive its first set of six-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains in September while another five sets would be shipped by year-end, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha. He said the remainder of the total 38 sets is expected by June 2012.
Kong said the trains manufactured by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd (CSR ZELC) must be tested on Malaysian tracks before they could be commissioned.
He said the 38 train sets cost RM1.89bil (excluding maintenance, repair and overhaul expenses).
KTMB signed an agreement with CSR ZELC in May 2010 for the purchase of the custom-made EMUs that could run on Malaysian meter gauge track and travel up to 140kph.
KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the new units allow an increase in the frequency of trains, which could transport more passengers in shorter time intervals.
He said the EMUs also offer more comfortable travel as they were cleaner and the air-conditioning system is more efficient.
Aminuddin said the trains have security measures like close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in all the cars.
One coach for each EMU would be designated for female passengers only.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's cargo business, coupled with its multi-modal and distribution units, now makes about RM210 million revenue a year.
Kuala Lumpur: National railway company Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) aims to rake in revenues of more than RM1 billion from its cargo business in five years, its chief said.
Currently, the cargo business, coupled with KTMB's multi-modal and distribution units, makes about RM210 million revenue per annum.
Business Times reported on Monday that KTMB's cargo and multimodal units will be combined and parked under a new company called KTMB Logistics Sdn Bhd, headed by Datuk Alias Kadir.
KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the RM1 billion target is achievable.
He is attributing growth to the new six-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains and strategic alliances that KTMB is forming with other train operators.
KTMB will get its first set of EMU trains on September 6 while five more will be shipped by year-end.
The rest of the 38 sets, which the government had ordered for RM1.9 billion, is expected to be delivered by June 2012.
"This is the kind of transfor-mation that we are working on. We are waiting for the Ministry of Finance Inc to approve the plan after which we will come up with a new business model to turn around KTMB," Aminuddin told Business Times at Balai Berita here yesterday.
KTMB is segregating its core businesses under a two-phase restructuring plan, with the aim of being more efficient and profi-table.
Under the Government Transformation Plan, 33 listed and unlisted government-linked companies will undergo restructuring in various stages, including KTMB, to operate more efficiently.
"KTMB has a lot of potential waiting to be unleashed. We hope it will start making operating profits in two years. The cargo business will be the first to help it turnaround," Aminuddin said.
KTMB has been making losses since it was corporatised in 1992 due to high operating costs. It did, however, make a net profit of RM9 million to RM15 million from 1993 to 1995, before falling into the red again in the following years.

Union threatens disruption of train services for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations if Aminuddin Adnan does not resign immediately.
================================================================================
KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) employees want their president, Aminuddin Adnan, to step down immediately or face a drastic backlash.
“Malaysia’s trains may come to a screeching halt during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations if does not quit,” said Abdul Razak Md Hassan, chief of the Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya (RUM).
“We want the government to end the president of KTMB’s contract or we will take drastic action!” he told hundreds of KTMB employees in front of the company’s KL headquarters.
“First of all, work to rule, be careful with Hari Raya!” warned Razak. “There’s real possibility that KTMB workers would go on strike.”
More than 300 disgruntled KTMB employees took part in a picket along Jalan Sultan Hishammuddin at around 6pm yesterday evening.
Armed with air horns, the crowd, some hailing from as far away as Alor Star, Kedah, were boisterous as they announced their arrival in front of the KTMB office.
They also carried protest banners, all of them against Aminuddin’s position as KTMB president.
“It’s too late to negotiate, KTMB president. Banggang (stupid),” and “The KTMB president should learn how to be a leader,” read some of them.
Unfurling banners and handing out RUM badges, the protest also took on a carnival-like atmosphere, with the crowd belting out the union’s anthem and the patriotic “Inilah Barisan Kita”.
Culture of fear
The picket was the second of its kind in the last two years. In July last year, 200 RUM members picketed outside the KTMB headquarters in Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin.
They demanded that the Electric Train Service (ETS) remain within KTMB’s purview, instead of becoming a separate private subsidiary. They too, called for Aminuddin’s resignation.
Later on, the union met with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and presented their views. Najib is in charge of the Finance Ministry, which oversees KTMB.
Although the government acceded to their demands over the ETS, Najib asked RUM to be patient with Aminuddin, who only became KTMB president in August 2009.
Aminuddin was previously the president of the Express Rail Link, a YTL subsidiary.
But RUM appears to have had enough of the KTMB president. Aminuddin, they said, was to blame not only for the company’s poor performance, but also the alleged RM300m loss of KTMB’s cash reserves and overdrafts.
FMT previously reported the union accusing him of creating a “culture of fear” within the company, with KTMB senior officials allegedly being punished for being union-friendly.
Members from other unions also supported this evening’s picket. Khalid Atan, Malayan Trades Union Congress (MTUC) president slammed KTMB’s top management for ignoring its workers.
“We want (KTMB’s) leaders to see this. We don’t want RUM to be sidestepped,” he said.
Representatives from the International Transport Federation, National Union of Bank Employees and even the Malaysian Airlines union (MASEU) were also at the protest.
The picket ended at around 6.35pm, with the crowd dispersing peacefully.

PASSENGERS of the Electric Train Service (ETS) now have more reason to opt for the service.
The ETS is allocating 64,800 seats at a lower price for grabs until the end of the year for the Ipoh - Kuala Lumpur Sentral route.
KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said under the new ‘Koc 1 Rakyat’ service which was introduced by the ETS on July 1, passengers need to pay only RM16 for a one-way travel between Kuala Lumpur Sentral and Ipoh.
With the latest promotion, he said, those who wish to take the ETS now can choose either the ETS Platinum train which is a direct, non-stop service, costing RM45; the ETS Gold train which has nine stops and costs RM35; the ETS Silver train which has 12 stops, costing RM25 or the Koc 1 Rakyat.
“There are 30 seats allocated per trip. Passengers may purchase their tickets two weeks in advance before the travel period. However, the ‘Koc 1 Rakyat’ service is only applicable to Malaysians.
“In order for passengers to enjoy the promotional fare, they only have to present their MyKad at the counter when purchasing the tickets,” he said in his speech during the launch of the service at the Ipoh Railway Station by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir on Friday.
Also present at the launch was ETS chief operations officer Azizullah Kinayatullah.
Dr Aminuddin said the promotion is to encourage Malaysians to travel by the ETS which is more comfortable, convenient and safe.
He added that ETS will also provide WiFi facilities for its passengers soon.
For more information, he advised the public to visit www.ets-train.com.my or contact the Customer Service Call Centre at 1-300-88-5862.

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/8642/30hst.jpg
SAUDI ARABIA: Contracts have been signed for construction of four of the five stations for the Haramain High Speed Rail project, Saudi Railways Organization announced on February 16.
The contracts form Package 2 of Phase 1 of the HHR project. Saudi Bin Laden Group is to build the stations at Makkah (3·18bn riyal) and Madinah (21·56bn riyal), while Saudi Oger will be responsible for Jeddah (2·90bn riyal) and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh (1·75bn riyal).
Engineering designs have been prepared by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold. According to SRO, the stations will be 'to the highest international standards and specifications', with 'aesthetically iconic' designs which take into account Islamic architectural traditions. The stations in Makkah and Madinah will be 'consistent with the religious dimension' of the holy cities.
In addition to arrival and departure concourses, shops, restaurants and cafes, the stations will feature mosques accommodating more than 600 people, civil defences stations, short and long term car parking, a helipad and VIP lounges. Connections to local public transport will include pedestrian links to proposed light rail services.
A fifth station is planned at King Abdul Aziz international airport in Jeddah.

KTMB keen on Saudi high-speed rail project

KUALA LUMPUR: National railway company Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) aims to work on the Haramain high-speed rail project in Saudi Arabia to gain expertise so it could undertake a similar project here.
The US$6 billion (RM18.06 billion) Haramain project involves a 450km rail link between Makkah (Mecca) and Madinah. The project has commenced and is expected to be completed by end-2012.
KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said it has sent several staff to the project site to lobby for contracts.
"We believe with the expertise and exposure gained, we will be ready when Malaysia decides to implement its own high-speed rail project from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.
"We want to grab the opportunity to work on the high-speed project," Aminuddin said in an interview with Business Times recently in Kuala Lumpur.
The KL-Singapore high-speed rail job, estimated to cost RM8 billion to RM14 billion, will stretch about 400km and reduce travel time to 90 minutes from the current seven hours.
YTL Corp Bhd first mooted the idea to build a high-speed rail in the late 1990s, and then, in 2006. The project was put on hold in April 2008 due to high cost to the government, estimated at about RM8 billion.
By the middle of 2009, YTL again revived talk on the project and expressed hope that the government would relook at the proposal.
In 2010, Malaysia made a proposal to revive the project.
Performance Management and Delivery Unit director Ahmad Suhaili said recently that a pre-feasibility study for the rail project will be concluded on August 19 and submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
Ahmad said the study would allow the government to decide on the corridors and stations to be located between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Thats a good news, thats mean the design is from Germany but manufactured in China just like the rest of products nowadays in the market. Let's see how long it will be last, but at least the German company will scrutinize the finish products in term of quality.
Aquaglas August 12th, 2011, 03:50 PM Great to hear that my countrymen have their fingers in the game. This might be the reason why the EMUs were so expensive ... hahaha
It is good to see the interior design as functional and spacious as possible without compromising passenger convenience (sufficient large doors, powerful aircon etc.). I do hope that there are enough seats, because compared to LRT, the komuter routes are a lot longer. And who wants to stand on a train all the way from Sg. Buloh to Seremban or even further. I can't really tell by the pictures if the whole train only has those side seats or if the seating landscape is diversified like in the original class 82 or 83 designs, which I do prefer. Of course under current conditions it makes sense to reduce the number of seats, but in the long run if there are sufficient trains, commuters will be happy to sit down during their ride.
Unfortunately, design is not everything. In Germany their are some very well designed trains, which break down due to technical/electronic failures. Since those crucial components are made/designed in China we will have to see. I hope KTM will get the funds to maintain the new trains properly and not repeat the mistakes of the past.
I still can't get over the fact that the almost equally old Ampang line trains are so much better off and I don't think any of those trains is in a state beyond repair. (correct me if I'm wrong)
