View Full Version : Designer of Los Angeles International Airport Tianbian October 8th, 2009, 06:02 AM Who designed Los Angeles Internation Airport? milquetoast October 8th, 2009, 09:35 AM Mines Field, named after the real estate agent William Mines, arranged to have some acreage of wheat and lima bean fields turned into an airport closer to the ocean. The Los Angeles City Council set aside 640 acres in Westchester. The first hanger, Hanger 1, was built in 1929. Amazingly, this acreage was WEST of Sepulveda, so as the airport expanded west, a tunnel (first of its kind) was built under the airport runways. Pereira & Luckman was contracted and architects Welton Becket and Paul Williams designed a complete revamped version to celebrate "The Jet Age." Paul Williams designed this: . http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/album%202/theme_building.jpg . http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/album%202/Williams_Paul_R_.jpg . http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/album%202/Aerial-lax-theme-tower_A-01.jpg . http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/album%202/AARON-1.jpg A*R*R*O*N/FLICKR LAWA Kenny October 11th, 2009, 08:04 AM This was the first Hangar and building of Mines Filed (LAX). At the time, the airport ran north to south along side Sepulveda Blvd. 1928 http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1012/795507436_5b7f2b2c57_b.jpg floyd b bariscale, flickr http://www.insidesocal.com/history/minesfield.jpg At this point it was renamed "Los Angeles Municipal Airport" And the runway was built east-west as they are now with a second runway crisscrossing http://www.militarymuseum.org/Resources/MinesField2.jpg 1960 http://aerofiles.com/AP-lax1960.jpg The whole building still stands, it is used by FED-EX (or DHL or both) http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1110/795471194_29c6ebe9dd_b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1072/795471318_78fbfdcc93_b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1072/795471400_ba22199e7f_b.jpg This its current status http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Los_Angeles_International_Airport_satellite_view.png milquetoast October 11th, 2009, 10:42 AM AweSUMMMMMM Unbelievable! They kept the folding hanger doors! http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee192/trolltoast/album%202/795471318_78fbfdcc93_b.jpg AlexTheMartian October 11th, 2009, 01:46 PM AweSUMMMMMM Unbelievable! They kept the folding hanger doors! I found out that it is a Registered National Historic Landmark. That is good :) http://www.afcoinc.com/properties-lax.html It seems the side shown in these recent pictures is now facing a parking lot, and the opposite side of the building is the side actually used for cargo operations, and seems to have similar-looking hanger doors, however the sides of the doors are different (shown on the link above) |
