Yeah the article is up on the Jewellery Quarter thread. Looks like it was pretty much contained to the extractor unit in the building but obviously there will be more damage within that structure - though nothing that bad.

HUNDREDS of workers were evacuated today after fire swept through a fabricated metals factory in Birmingham.

Smoke filled the skies and could be seen right across the city after flames engulfed Cooksons Precious Metals in Vittoria Street, Hockley, one of the country’s leading suppliers of gold, silver and platinum.

Six fire crews dealt with the blaze at about 1.30pm, which is thought to have started in a dust extraction unit.

No one was trapped in the three-storey building.

Paramedics and West Midlands Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team also went to the scene.

Marie Haddleton, an office worker in nearby Frederick Street, said: "There were flames everywhere and smoke was billowing out from a tower.

"There were hundreds of evacuated workers in the street and loads of people watching from the road and from office blocks.

"I think they wanted to get them out quick because there’s gas cylinders in there.

"It was really black smoke and looked really dramatic.

"It’s just a black charred tower now."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said there had been no reports of anyone trapped inside the burning factory.

The spokesman added: "It doesn’t look at the moment as though any persons are in the building and we are liaising with the fire service to see whether we need to remain on standby."

Workers were later allowed back into the building and were due to start work again today.
