I have a problem. I've been looking for an old school Ethiopian song. The chorus goes like this "ADDIIIIIIIS AAAAABAAABAA instrumental (lalalalalallalalalal) ADDIIIIIIS ABABA" It's not "addis ababa bete" i'am looking after as many at this point would think. I've been looking for a year now without any results :ohno: I would call the genre Funk or Swing.

One of the the instrument is called TOM-TOM (I think) - popular in south west Ethiopia. Anyway, great to see / hear people crossing the traditional boundary and creat something different and inclusive.

Hi Abesha: thanks for posting mulatu's jazz. This is one of Mulatu Astatke's great ethiojazz. It is classic. Here I attached the Hip hop/reggae version of the new nas and damiam marley song from the album Distant Relatives. As you all know, they sampled from the above song. Knaan is the one who gave for Damian. Knaan's four hot songs from the album Troubadour were also sampled from ethio oldies. Nowadays ethiopian songs are being digged by international musicians which is good to get a spotlight for our music popularity in the future.

fame from all his work, did you know his songs were also used in the soundtrack of "Broken Flowers"?

K'naan actually gave credit for all samples he used. If you have K'naan's original TROUBADOUR album you will see it in the CD cover pages.
Here are five samples that he used in his album.

1. ABCs
"Kasalefkut Hulu" Mulatu Astatke
2. DREAMER
"Tey Gedyeleshem" Almayehu Eshete
3. I COME PREPARED
"Shellela" Getachew Mekurya
4. AMRICA
"Lanchi" Tilahun Gessesse
5. 15 MINUTES AWAY
"Yene Felagote" Tilahun Gessesse

*All samples use courtesy of Bada Musique and CRC Editions.

However My question is though, how come Badu Musique & CRC Editions have the right to give permission on those songs?

By the way it worths to have Knaan's Troubadour album as well as Distant Relatives by nas and Damian Marley. All lyrics are amazing.

good video. Did he think no one would notice? ded deb gettata somali.

seriously? This man takes samples from great artists, credits them in his album cover, who also mentioned them in an interview, you're going to say he violated copy write laws?
I guess if i were going to do that, i would take the time to go ahead and credit the musicians who i ripped off.
ignorance is bliss... i'll say it again, ignorance is bliss especially when it's fueled by hate.

on the flip side, he's a new star, his album is being pushed in major stores and online fronts. People will listen to this and think, "who made these sick beats?" the enthusiasts will look it up and have now opened new doors for them to explore great Ethiopian classics.

And i'm guessing Common, Kanye, any of the Marley brothers are all gettata for sampling Ethiopian classics as well?

We are bound to have some Western influences in Ethiopia, just look at the rest of the world. I think Ethiopia is one of few countries where traditional music and culture still is very strong.

dorzew
November 24th, 2010, 09:24 AM
I don't have any problem on western influences. I am fusing with my own culture and exercising it as well. My problem is that most of us (ethiopians) don't have any clue about the culture that we grab and adopt without knowing its negative and positive impact. Since we are in music thread, let me bring some examples to make my point more obvious. I have heard (not listened) many ethio hip hop musics for the recent years. Almost all musicians seems don't have any idea what hip hop is all about. They focussed on western songs' video images rather than lyrics and arangements. (it may come from lack of understanding the language or not paying enough attention). When they sing in english, I always have a hard time to listen the lyrics. I am afraid to say this but I don't think the singers themselves able to understand their own words. When I listen to the amharic version of hip hop, I ask my self this, "doesn't realy hip hop needs a good lyrical flow?". At the matter of fact, there are few artists who are on the right track. But generally speaking ethio hip hop is not on the right direction at all. If our artists pay close attention, they can learn from Soweto and Nairobi hip hop artists. To be a hip hop artist, they don't have to change themselves like westerns rather they can take good elements from the westerns and fuse it with our own. I believe the talent is there. However everybody is rushing and using a shortcut to gain popularity. Hip Hop in Kenya came out about 10 years ago. Look at them now. They make it their own like the Soweto did. They fused western hip hop with some african flavor and made it global. What I am saying for our ethio hip hop artists is that stop copying others, be yourself. Make enough research and understand well before jump on to westerns' creativities and at least try a lil hard to make testy and meaningful music.

Yoniii
November 24th, 2010, 12:31 PM
I agree with everything you said. I rather listen to Amharic hiphop, because it sounds ridiculous in English (you automatically compare it to American artists and they can't compete).

Madcon is a multi-platinum award winning (World Music Award, and 5 Norwegian Grammys) Norwegian europop duo. Madcon was founded by Tshawe Baqwa and Yosef Wolde-Mariam. their musical style is a retro-urban mix with influences from funk, soul and hip hop (with additional elements from reggae, Latin and African musical influences).

"Beggin" is one of Yosef and Tshawe's greatest hits that helped them to expand their popularity all over the world.

yap! Indeed Yosef and Tshawe were established madcon in 1992. They have been doing their thing for long and they became well recognised in Norway and many Europe countries since 2002. As far as I know, Yosef is the only Ethiopian blood who achieved such a prestigious honor and recognition in the worldwide music industry.

Their second album, entitled So Dark The Con Of Man, was released in 2007. In Norway, the album was certified gold in 3 hours, and platinum in 3 days. The single 'Beggin' earned the group several #1 chart positions in Europe (including France, Portugal, Norway and Russia), and an overall #2 position on the European Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also achieved 9 x platinum status in Norway, and stayed #1 on the official Norwegian sales chart for 12 weeks making Beggin' one of the biggest hits in Norway of all time.

American born artist Kenny Allen is living in Addis since the end of 2005. "Ethiopia Watch Over Me" is a hot single from his album that came out (I think) last year. He titled his album "251" after the country code (phone code of Ethiopia). He works as a DJ aka 'Pulse' at AfroFm105.3 the only Ethiopian Fm station broadcasts in english. I heard he also teachs english in private school. He and his band 251 also jam every week in different nightclubs and bars. Ofcourse he has his own recording studio in addis and he is producing songs for others and indeed for himself. Life in Addis is way way better than life in Washington DC for him. Infact Addis has been a better choice to live in for renowned music producers like Abegazu Shiota, Theodros Mekonnen aka Tedy Mac and Abreham wolde. We ethiopians who are living abroad should have to see the posibilities to go back home and establish a new life there.

Here is a clip of Kenny talking and singing.

rabutjak'aluo

this borana night was held in nairobi. major borana town is marsabit in northern kenya.actual pop. of borana-oromo is most likely 120,000-150,000 or more.borana consist of other sub tribes who have inter-married or assimilated like gabbra and ameru people.real pop. is inconsistant because of nomadic nature of northern kenya/south eithopia borana. to them the border doesn't exit.so the borana real pop.# are not accurate. the whole northern regions-(lake turkana to somali border)have always been marginalized and under represented

Yes, obviously the lyrics and the language don't sound anything like Amharic, but the instrumentation does, it reminds me of some Gonderr songs with the Masinko and the Kirar. They play a similar musical scale with Amhara songs.

As for the singing it does sound like Harari/Adere or Arabic, definitely not Oromigna.
