View Full Version : ARCHIVED: Southern Cross Station - v1 plotstyle June 8th, 2004, 11:10 AM reminds me of the fran banga proposal.... kasperluke June 8th, 2004, 12:21 PM Walked passed today, there is scafolding all over the main old specer street building and they have removed the air conditioning etc from the roof, looks like it will be coming down soon. Also, along collins street they have already put some new glass. It is nothing spectacular but it is going to make the station look pretty good. I took a picture but you can't see it because of the temporay fence that they have put up already. Also walking along under the new roof you already get a great feel for what is it going to become! I can't wait it is going to be great! plotstyle June 9th, 2004, 11:41 AM dbl post plotstyle June 9th, 2004, 11:47 AM the bleaker the better eh ... we do need the rain heh 47% we need stronger water restrictions... and heres the whats going on area for tayser! http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic94.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic95.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic96.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic97.jpg tayser June 9th, 2004, 01:02 PM sweet as. looks like everyone wants to get arty farty now - what have you done silvermb! :) it's all good. Collin June 10th, 2004, 01:34 AM Plotstyle they're the best perspective of the roof I have seen so far! Thanks man. Yardmaster June 11th, 2004, 03:00 PM The fourth "roof arch" section was there today but wasn't there Wednesday: so the 600 tonne crane doesn't just work early Sunday mornings ... At the risk of being called "arty farty" ... http://www.users.bigpond.com/potaroo/Melbourne/spencer/spst5355.jpg Yardmaster June 11th, 2004, 03:22 PM I was just about to ask the same question fishcatdogbird. I hope they are suspended from the roof. There is no need to clutter the platforms with ugly poles. Re: power for electric trains: While they haven't appeared in any rendered images I've seen, I think you'll find the overhead wires will be hung conventionally. If they hung them from the roof, they'd need to stabilize them 5m or so above track level anyway. More ugly poles & cables! tayser June 11th, 2004, 03:32 PM You can see the new pylons in plotstyle's pic here: http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic83.jpg (large one) and it hadn't occurred to me earlier, but you can also see some of the "new" platfroms, which, thankfully, look like they're getting completely replaced. The new pylons wont be too bad, they're fairly simple, even bordering on minimalistic, compared to the dark grey that's there now. They're probably going to compliment the pylons for the roof more than anything IMO. thanks for the update Yardmaster! Yardmaster June 12th, 2004, 11:14 AM Now why didn't I notice that? So much clutter at the station ... The new platform visible here is the north end of "8A" extending under Collins St. & way south of it, under a new skillion canopy designed to catch the south-westerlies. fishcatdogbird June 13th, 2004, 03:37 AM Took these yesterday thought they would be of some interest: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/pc2cbbbb87b24c1b80e6aab423883bede/f84c491c.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p01aa05781d33e832a97a0f12893ed3ee/f84c4934.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p54649e74373a6f22fdc2d857c34f3dd3/f84c4941.jpg A new section waiting to be transported from under the Bolte Bridge: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/pd7462631f53dc450dc67f089a73621c9/f84c4938.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p7473d27a6453fc52dfb1c5059653b25e/f84c4925.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/pafa184efb185c960c96201e1a3da436e/f84c4947.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p32b74bf81b040ba187b7a764e6a43bb1/f84c4913.jpg This is such a massive crane: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p77c6020e83eddb1b45f5eb5af39f9bac/f84c492e.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p6c9724a2ca699dbad93ce444efa2b258/f84c494c.jpg Cheerio FCDB :) plotstyle June 13th, 2004, 03:42 AM great small shots :) if you have bigger versions i would be happy to host them for you check my profile or pm me for my email tayser June 13th, 2004, 04:08 AM Right click each of the images, double click the url to the pic, right click, copy, paste the url into another browser window and add ".orig.jpg" to the end of the url and hit enter: that'll show the original pic (they're HUGE! btw). It's all good FCDB! Yardmaster / or any of the Railpage forum lurkers: do you know what's happening with the two outer tracks at the station? http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p6c9724a2ca699dbad93ce444efa2b258/f84c494c.jpg.orig.jpg ^^ copy / paste that into a browser window. plotstyle June 13th, 2004, 04:36 AM thanks tays :) Dalts 1985 June 13th, 2004, 06:18 AM the bleaker the better eh ... http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic97.jpg Im Backkkk. Ok a quick question in regard to platform 1, Say I want to take pictures of the car sidings from the end of platform 1 or the overland arriving into platform 2 can I still do it, I notice there is a yellow barrier running the length of platform 1 so is this section of the Platform still open to the public? Dalts 1985 June 13th, 2004, 06:25 AM I noticed some where that as part of the SSS project, there is mean't to be an elevated walkway along one of the (Country) platforms from the Collins Street Concourse to the Bourke Street Bridge. Now Question 1: can any one tell me if this walk way is to still go ahead, Question 2: if it is, what platform will it be built to run along? Tayser, Tried that thiong you asaid to do, but I can't find a URL anywhere when I right click, all I get is the usual stuff that comes up on the right click menu. Paul dynamoultraclean June 13th, 2004, 07:11 AM Right click then go to properties :) Yardmaster June 13th, 2004, 07:59 AM Yardmaster / or any of the Railpage forum lurkers: do you know what's happening with the two outer tracks at the station? I'd like to know: all I can say is they're still there under the "campus style building" in the rendering you posted. Yardmaster June 13th, 2004, 08:16 AM Im Backkkk. Ok a quick question in regard to platform 1, Say I want to take pictures of the car sidings from the end of platform 1 or the overland arriving into platform 2 can I still do it, I notice there is a yellow barrier running the length of platform 1 so is this section of the Platform still open to the public? The section of Platform 1 north of Bourke St. is where the toilets & booking office etc. are now located (in portables). I don't think they'll let you past that yellow barrier. I did get photos of the carriage sidings from the Lonsdale St. access bridge into Platform 2: the section bridging the tracks seemed to be excluded from the construction site. But with the increased activity north of Bourke St. where the tracks servicing platform once were, this may no longer be possible: your last photo shows a truck on this bridge. http://www.users.bigpond.com/potaroo/Melbourne/spencer/spst5077.jpg Aussie Steve June 14th, 2004, 08:43 AM The station looks amazing. My partner and I took the train home today from Spencer Street Station, and he too was impressed with the size, scale and shape of the new roof. There were a few other people also talking about the new roof too! Dalts 1985 June 14th, 2004, 11:49 AM The section of Platform 1 north of Bourke St. is where the toilets & booking office etc. are now located (in portables). I don't think they'll let you past that yellow barrier. http://members.optusnet.com.au/~wadad/mypic97.jpg So the toliets are where, behind all the wood panelling? But can you still walk up the platform next to the yellow barrier? or does the panelling come across the platform to the platform edge and cut the area where the yellow barrier is off from the general public? Yardmaster June 14th, 2004, 01:02 PM So the toliets are where, behind all the wood panelling? But can you still walk up the platform next to the yellow barrier? or does the panelling come across the platform to the platform edge and cut the area where the yellow barrier is off from the general public? I didn't try to go that way- having already been ordered to stay behind the yellow line in the temporary bus terminal at Lonsdale St. I think the wooden panelling actually turns in at the north end ... Bluestar June 15th, 2004, 09:36 AM Question: at the midpoint of each roof span (midway between each Y column) there appear to be pairs of rather ungainly, awkward looking I-beams rising up to support each span. Surely these are not permanent, but shall be removed when all the spans are in place, at which point the structure will be self-supporting? They just don't work aesthetically. Blue plotstyle June 15th, 2004, 11:19 AM im guessing when the structural grids connect :) ciaobellaxo June 15th, 2004, 04:09 PM http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid121/p01aa05781d33e832a97a0f12893ed3ee/f84c4934.jpg Another question: What will be put in place in the gaps between the sections of roofing? Will it be the same type of material? AUboy June 15th, 2004, 04:33 PM I think it's supposed to be glass panels. plotstyle June 16th, 2004, 01:18 AM glass but at the moment theres workmen around :) Dalts 1985 June 16th, 2004, 11:39 AM The section of Platform 1 north of Bourke St. is where the toilets & booking office etc. are now located (in portables). Is the Spencer Street Station Box going as well? How do they go now getting those cars out stationed behind the box with the bulk placed across the rails? tayser August 26th, 2004, 12:38 PM THREAD #2 (http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=111547) [ threadid = 111547 ] |
