View Full Version : A city I am modelling (not SimCity)
AcesHigh April 5th, 2004, 07:41 AM So I dont know if this is the right section for this thread!! But it would be cool if there was a section for 3D modelled cities...
well... right now the city is in its beginning phase of construction.
The tallest building so far is 508 meters tall.
The Swiss Re style building is 210 meters tall.
The 2nd tallest building is 363 meters tall.

sdes April 11th, 2004, 04:04 PM Cool!
What program are you using?
I am working on a similiar project too, my neighborhood.:)
Style™ April 11th, 2004, 04:09 PM Somehow I missed this thread!
Oh well! Now that I do see it, this looks awsome! That is a creative mind to get such unique builings that all fit together so well. Show us any more updates! :D
AcesHigh April 13th, 2004, 02:24 AM @SDES: Im using rhinocerus.
@Style: actually, I didnt planned anything very well. I just created the building and textures and got lucky they got cool together.
I still havent updated the city. I started doing some other things. As soon as I do it I will post it ok...
Gendo April 15th, 2004, 03:39 AM Good old Rhino 3D is what I use also. You should turn on 3D clouds, but nice buildings dude.
reptar April 20th, 2004, 02:29 PM I'd like to work with you and your skills in modelling cities on my online comic, in the future I need some tall buildings for it. Well if your interested have a look - link below - and then we talk again
Skyrise July 20th, 2004, 01:12 PM wow looks cool! as soon as my harddrive is working again ill post some pictures of my city I made with Bryce5. Im trying to get that city online asap and I HOPE there are a lot people here that want to participate (anyone knows how to convert 3dsMAX or Maya format to Bryce? cause then the more advanced COULD model in those programs).
Vesle July 21st, 2004, 09:16 PM these are real good! how does a program like that work? do you draw a picture or do you design the building and then it can caculate how it looks from different angles and make a picture???
sorry I'm really olschool;)
btw: how tall would these buildings be irl?
AcesHigh July 21st, 2004, 10:42 PM i dont remember the height of these buildings. If I am not mistaken, the taller is over 400 meters.
You draw a 3D shape of the building. You know... polygons and such, which the computer can change the angle just calculating...
Have you never seen any documentary or anything about 3D movies like Toy Story or special effects in movies?
Vesle July 22nd, 2004, 02:33 PM no unfortunately not. thank you for the explanation. how much does a program like that cost?
the white building kinda look like it resembles the hight of the old wtc in ny.. in that case the tall glass building would be a lot taller than 400m..??
Skyrise July 23rd, 2004, 05:16 PM I'm really losing my patience on the guys repairing my harddrive! :(
but ill post some ugly small pics I still have:
(ps @ Aceshigh: I don't intend to ruin your topic but see my pics as an addition. besides that: we should do some stuff together real soon ;))

Welfe July 23rd, 2004, 05:59 PM Wow, totally awesome.
P.S. The Germany Int. Building looks like the Messeturm in Frankfurt. What a co-in-ki-dink ;)
Skyrise July 23rd, 2004, 07:27 PM Wow, totally awesome.
P.S. The Germany Int. Building looks like the Messeturm in Frankfurt. What a co-in-ki-dink ;)
that is why it's called the German Int. Bld. indeed ;)
Actually I build a LOT of towers inspired by others =/ The only building im really really proud of would be the Floriat (which is right behind the GIB on the picture).
The AEX for example was inspired by the WFC in NYC a little bit and I have a clone of both Citigroup Centre and Empire State Building too :P. Oh and WTC ofcourse ;)
AcesHigh July 24th, 2004, 03:46 PM Skyrise: awesome!! Much better than mine of course, although that was my first city, i have already done a much better one some 2 months ago, still worst than your though. You modelling skills are clearly better than mine. How do you do the buildings façades? Do you use bitmap textures, procedural textures, or do you MODEL them (holes in the walls, another polygon for glass, etc)? What programs do you use?
Here is a model i recently did of the COPAN building (130 meters i guess) from São Paulo

Skyrise July 27th, 2004, 01:52 PM hey AcesHigh, REAL nice building!! :)
Do you know the program Bryce5 (or Bryce3d)? It's not really modelling, it's more like "blocking" :) but it's fairly easy and I can produce nice buildings with it, so :)
