Well, like I said none of the tallest buildings in western Berlin is visible in these pictures.
Like for instance Europa Center, Kudamm Karee,
Technische Universität, Steglitzer Kreisel,
BVA, etc.
What we see on these two pics are mostly buildings from the middle
and eastern Berlin so the city is quite vast without one
single concentrated cluster.

The skylinie is anything but historic, but thank god not too highrise (sorry if I say this in a skyscraper forum but I prefer to keep the characteristic skyline of a city, including highrise limits).

First: one Reply is enough...
Than : Poland is going to join Europe in the Future...

But you`re right... Jerusalem is similar with Berlin because of this:

www.berliner-mauer.de/medien/literatur/mauerbuchbebra.jpg

I cannot remember something that`s nearly that bad in friendly Poland.
(But you`re Country was not the only one which was destroyed in second World War Man)

Hamburg and Cologne for Example...

Think about it next Time! :bash:

delfin_pl

well poland was the most destroyed, and warsaw virtually didnt exist, so how can we compare it to berlin? every 5th pole lost his life becase of the world war two, and its incredible that it managed to rebuild its cities from totall rubble

Mediocre compared to what!! London and Berlin are both European cities. Most European cities barely rises above 5 or 6 stories except for a few churches. With the major exceptions of Frankfurt and Paris L.D there are not many nice tall skylines in Europe.

I like the skyline, not very tall but dense and full of nice designs.

The fact is that destructions in Germany and Poland were similar. Some cities were flatted with the ground because the same red army went through the our countries and the nazis resistance was very hard. Except that Berlin was bombarded by western courtiers but Warsaw was destroyed during the rebel.

Now Berlin has got many examples of modern wonderful architecture made by great architects. The big number of skyscrapers is probably only the meter of time.

That´s indeed right!
Berlin and ALL the major cities of Germany was bombed to ruins
and more or less completely destroyed during WWII!
It´s a great shame because it was mostly
unnecessary and done just to kill and
destroy everything and everyone!
God bless the united Berlin,
the united Germany and
the united Europe!

anagorn, berlin may be an exciting city for some and an interesting city for fans of all styles of architecture, but the skyline isn't very exciting at all. this city is so big that a few highlights (like the occasional highrise building or the a tv tower) don't have a big impact on the skyline. a great skyline doesn't have to be filled with skyscrapers but in a huge city like berlin the lack of them makes it boring to look at. nowadays there is a long list of cities in europe that create landmark skylines (I'm thinking of vienna for example , or a couple of emerging metropolises in the east, almost all big dutch cities, or the major spanish cities), only berlin has failed to do so. potsdamer platz was a nice try - it is a great development btw. - but it's just to small for a huge city like berlin. the only project that could change berlin's skyline would be the realization of the alexander platz masterplan. but that's more than uncertain.
berlin is just too big considering the population. the city will always suffer under the over-capacities you will find everywhere in the city. having said that a potsdamer platz development in a city like rotterdam or barcelona would make an impact there, but in berlin it's to small scaled. berlin should concentrate on developing fewer areas on a larger scale instead of spreading the development across the entire city.

Anagorn
April 13th, 2004, 03:21 PM
Well, it´s miles better than the skylines of other over 3 million inhabitants cities
like Rome and Athens and it doesn´t have one big concentrated cluster
but it sure as heck does have a skyline at least unlike those two.
Sure it´s spread out but that goes to show the unique fact
that Berlin has three main city centers:

Alexander Platz (City East)
Breitscheid Platz (City West)
Potsdamer Platz (New Middle)

THAT sure makes it a worldclass metropole at least!

actually rome and athens have both better skylines than berlin, despite a total lack of highrise buildings. rome and athens have more visible highlights in the skyline in a smaller area than berlin. what also helps is the geographical aspect: what makes the rome or the athens skyline more appealing are the hills, for example. berlin is flat.

having 3 centres sure makes a city more interesting, but in the case of berlin it doesn't help much. I said it already: berlin has too many over-capacities. it's too big for a city of 3 million. the artificial creation of a "luxury mile" at friedrich strasse failed and it happened at the expense of the ku'damm. it seems berlin's developments always get built at the expense of another developments in the city. same happens with areas. berlin doesn't need 3 centres.

sorry, but they don't impress me much. however, what they do show is the diversity of berlin. there is not many cities in europe that are equally diverse.

btw. the fischer (?) island skyline pic is nice. in other cities this would have a huge impact on the skyline, not in berlin though.

HD what are you talking about!!!

With the exception of the acropolis,, Athens has no skyline and Rome's skyline is historic and lacks modern buildings for the most part, which is okay for a city like Rome. Try to make a logical point next time.
Berlin is not my favorite city (not even close) but it is a fascinating place and its look and architectural mix is interesting, it is despite its lack of architectural harmony probably the most interesting city in Central Europe as far as buildings go with an incredible mix of pre-20th century buildings, 1920s Art Noveau, Third Reich buildings, Capitalist 150s and 60s, Socialist Urban planning, post-modernm etc.......No other city has that.
Stop complaining about Berlin because skyscrapers or not it is a far more interesting places than either Frankfurt or Warsaw and certainly should not look to either city as models for future development.

Yeah but that is just one sector of the city....like Anagorn said there is no one cluster. As far as skyscrapers go...well unlike other cities it size..Berlin is just a major political center but the corporate centers of Germany are still in the west so the towers get built in other cities (Frankfurt, Munich, Ruhr, etc). Governments rarely build skyscrapers. But that photos is not Berlin...just one of the several "centres" the city has.

About Warsaw....in all honesty I am not too fond of the buildings built in Warsaw in recent years, they are tall for sure and that is good for Europe but the designs are barely better than what the communists made and most are just tall boxes with shinny facades.

If you mean this two at front you have right. Both skyscraper remember old communist time because it was build before 1989r. There is no surprise about that.

But I like the old modernist architecture of this skyscrapers. It is prove that new skyscrapers were build not only in few last years but it started 20-25 years ago.

The architecture of the latest is usually on very high level. Look on Intercontinental, Polish Telecommunication or new just u/c Rondo1

By the way, this photo I like very much.

Ofcorse you are right Berlin's history was much more harder than Warsaw's history :bash: . Warszawa didn't exist after German's escape. All historic monument were tore down!

http://www.um.warszawa.pl/muzeum_historyczne/img/rynek-2.jpg

First image - treasure of Germans in Warsaw (1945)
Second - treasure of Poland

In WII died all the greatest Polish people and that was the main loss, not thousands of buildings. The damages after WII worthed over 1.000.000.000.000 euro but Poland didn't receice 1$ !! Poland wanted a little credit from USA after a war but we didn't receive it. Germans received ! And now Germans remembered that they lost some terrains in Western Poland. Who should pay them for that? Ofcorse those ugly thiefs - Polish people. I watched a interview with some German who told that it is normal that robbers should return it :eek2: .

sorry for offtopic but I ddin't stand when i read the beginnig of that Topic

The damaged caused by bombs on German cities must
have been at least five times worse than the damage
on Polish cities.
Almost all cities in Germany were in complete ruins
after years and years of allied bombraids.
None of the two countries damage caused by
the war was fair though and it´s a great
tragedy altogether that must never be
repeated ever again in the future
history of our united continent.
So many innocent civilians have suffered
and died in worse ways than we ever
possibly can imagine.

Rome doesn't have more than 3 milion inhabitants... :nono:

real Metro-area's like in the rest of the world with strong Metropolitan Authorities don't exist in Italy, you know that as well as I do Genius Loci, it's an empty box with no power in it :nono: And even if you take that in consideration Berlin has a far bigger Metro-area than Rome, so comparing them is still not possible...

I'm sorry to disagree with you Caesar: but Berlin and Rome are two cities at same level of bigness
Not only they're in Europe quite unique and have many things in common:
-Similar population:
Berlin: over 3 mio and no many more with metro (Apart potsdam Berlin "hinterland" is not very crowded)
Rome: 2.8 mio and (as I said) 3.5 with metro (mostly on "Castelli Romani")
-Both the cities haven't istitutions for their metro areas, even 'cause their metro is not big respect the population of proper city (in Europe normally is the contrary)
-Both cities have a big municipality area
Berlin: 881 skm (and it's a Lander, istitutionally)
Rome: over 1300 skm
-Both cities are capitals (quite obvious :sleepy: )
-Both have big spaces in them I never saw so big in other cities in Europe, even bigger; and have more "centers" sprowled in a vast area

But even have a deep difference:
Berlin is a city pratically totally destroyed till the end of the war and having for more than 50 years no men's lands in it: its nowadays urbanistic developpement is based on this peuliarity
Rome, at the contrary, is a city with a huge history and an immense heritage: and even this influenced its urbanistic developpement

Obviuosly, in two different ways, both are beautiful cities :) :okay: ;)

CAESARS-PALACe
May 13th, 2005, 10:42 PM
I used Emporis, I don't know how accurate that is, but it says that Berlin has a metro-area of more than 4 million. I'm not refering to Rome's municipality area, it is huge but empty so that doesn't make it a big city...

http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/?id=100559

Rome: 2.8 mio

I think that is very optimistic :runaway: Only recently a few positive articles claimed it was now back above 2.7 million but 2.8 would be even more incredible...

(and it's a Lander, istitutionally)

indeed so it is totally different, Rome doesn't have a special "Roma Capitale-status" for the moment, it is not a Länder it is not a Regio like Madrid....all those people comparing should take that in consideration...or vote for special powers for Rome :)

by the way I find it pretty strange that someone thinks they've reached something when they have a better skyline :sleepy: than Athens and Rome (two ancient historical cities). As a city wih enormous potential to construct modern things Berlin should be compared with other cities.

I didn't want this thread to get into a Rome vs Berlin...

I only wanted to notice the two cities are comparable in population and bigness

Then, their history and conformation is incredibly different
They are two unique cities: one for its ancient history and the other for more recent one
Those things make them anything not to be comparable to any other city

For that their developpement is different (btw in Rome there are modern bouroughs, but not in city-center like in Berlin)
To be honest Berlin skyline is not a very impressive one: in Germany itself a city like Frankfurt can easily make it look shabby
But I prefer Berlin to Frankfurt: its atmosphere and its dynamism are unique

And, sorry for Berlin, I prefer Rome: a city can surprise you even when you think you know it very well...

Taking this consideration apart: Berlin is one of European cities I love most and its rapid growt of last years make me love it even more ;)

:runaway:

Tysklandsplikt- How many times have you been banned and how many screen names have you had???????????

I looked through this thread and it made me wonder. What does your obsession stem from? It's one thing to have a favorite city, but another to be creepy and obnoxious about it. I love Berlin too, but you might wanna tone it down dude. You make a mockery of Berlin with your over-the-top comments.
