Cairo-Alexandria-Matrouh Highway Project

Cairo-Alexandria-Matrouh Free Highway is one of the most vital arteries of the highway network in Egypt, linking the largest and most important port in Egypt with the Capital and serving the internal trade movement between them. As well as serving the urban development in the West Delta, its desert expansion and touristic activities in the North Coast. Therefore, the authority transfers into a free highway to meet the economic requirements of coming phase. Thus, the company has gained a great confidence in the execution of free highways in Egypt and abroad. Therefore, the General Authority for Roads and Bridges contracted with the company for the implementation of the development of the 1st Phase (sector I and II)
First: (first phase - the primary sector): the development of the Cairo-Alexandria-Matrouh road to turn it into a free Highway.
(From kilo 26 to kilo 51) and raise its efficiency. Besides; the works include the addition of a serving road, road beautification and the establishment of the required industrial works to prevent the u-turn. By this, it will be a free highway with a maximum speed 120 km/h.
The project scope of works: earthworks - paving - construction - lighting and power - agriculture and irrigation – varied works).
2. Contract Value: EGP 237 million.
3. Contract Value (inc. additional and recent works): EGP 495 million.
Second: (first phase - the second sector): The development and expansion of Cairo – Alexandria - Matrouh existing road to turn it into a free Highway (from kilo 51 to kilo 76) and raise its efficiency.

Construction is on-going on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, the first of four stages set to turn it into an international freeway, paving the way towards developing the interstate transportation system.

The entire transformation process will cost an estimated LE 1.5 billion. The first stage will include excavation and construction work across 50 kilometers with a price tag of LE 443 million.

Minister of Transport Mohamed Mansour explained that the new freeway was in line with the ministry’s strategy to upgrade Egypt’s transportation network by establishing roads and highways meeting international standards in a bid to facilitate movement for passengers and cargo.

Arab Contractors Company will implement the entire project, expected to be completed in 36 months. Construction will first begin on the side lanes to avoid congestion on the road during summertime.

The new Cairo-Alexandria Freeway will have bigger lanes and better lighting, telephone booths, ambulance and emergency services, as well as rest stops every 40 kilometers.

Residential buildings and compounds situated on both sides of the freeway will be fenced with concrete barriers in an effort to decrease the occurrence of traffic accidents resulting from pedestrians crossing the road. Intersections and u-turn will also be redesigned in a way that does not disturb oncoming traffic, similar to the layout of the Cairo-Ain Sokhna road.

This one of the most important projects in Egypt.

For those of you who didnt understand the articles, the plan is to upgrade the current Cairo-Alexandria-Matrouh "highway", to a full scale mulit-lane, highway, motorway, freeway (or wahtever you want to call it) to international standards.

I use this road every summer to get to my beach house in Marina on the North Coast, and this summer whilst passing through the Burger King Drive thru, I was given a pamphlet about the project. This pamphlet had AMAZING renders, I was like !!! The plan includes making the main highway into 4 lanes, with a seperate 2 lane side road. The plan also includes several fly-overs, bridges, tunnels, and massive 4-leaf clover interchanges near Alexandria and Cairo! The renders looked fantastic, I was literally lost at words!

However I lost the pamhplet :bash: And i feel like an idiot now. So to make it up to you guys, I took some photos of the construction progress.

So far, they have repaved some sections of the highway and added lighting. Also, construction work has started on the side roads, and fly-overs and interchages. They have also constructed several new ambulance stations. The 4 leaf clover interchange however, I did not see.

All pics taken by me :) :

Re-pavement and lighting works:
(in the pics some are completed and some are not)

Construction on the fly-overs, interchanges:

Look carefully at this photo. The "black thing" on the left of the pic is a support beam for a future fly-over :

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0255.jpg

Several Ambulance stations were constructed:

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0247.jpg

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0252.jpg

Here are some of the main things I remember from the pamphlet:

1. There are plans for a 4- leaf clover interchange at Cairo and Alexandria.

2. At the section where Smart Village meets the Cairo-Alex highway, they plan to make and interchang which involves a tunnel under the highway, and rises at the gates of smart village

3. Where the Cairo-Alex highway meets Wadi El Natroun, they plane to make an interchange.

3. The Cairo-Alexandria part of the project is expected to be completed towards the mid/end of 2010.

4. The rest of the poject is due to be completed by 2012.

I am really disappointed I could not show you the renders, as they really were priceless.

I hope you guys enjoyed whatever I could provide you with in this thread

And please, please, please search all over for them renders!

Just a few years ago it was all desert between Cairo and Alexandria. Every year there is almost a new development happening, and I am amazed at the agricultural projects taking place there too.

Hope the same thing happens towards the north coast eventually.

^^ absolutely there tons of projects when you go out from Cairo and head to Alexandria I saw tons of under constructions but some how I got details and I am just lazy to search for them :P as well as in the north coast there is alot of projects but you can't see much under constructions. and I started to hate it when they care much about Cairo more than other cities.

well inside in Egypt Tons of people from all around of Egypt go there in the summer it have one of the best beaches in the mediterranean sea but yeah I understand what you mean it will open the door to that city and it will be known just as marsa alam and el arish.

Private Eye
December 19th, 2009, 04:43 PM
I don't know about that, I mean yes it's known to Egyptians as a summer resort but it's never really presented as a tourist destination unlike the red sea cities.
I completely agree about the great beaches though, plenty of unspoiled beaches with great waves. :)

By the way, does anyone know if this highway is also part of this project, or is it entirely different?

If you would ask me to guess then I would say it might be linked to, so I would say yes.

it's only two cities extra as the map shows. soz TBH I would be REALLY be surprised if there isn't a highway in that area now now. it would be SHOCKING!

egypt69
December 19th, 2009, 11:45 PM
@PrivateEye, yes that is indeed part of the project, but that slide only covers the Coastline part of the project, the other part of the project is the Cairo-Alexandria segment. Does the slide show the Cairo-Alex segment by any chance? :dunno:

The Highway is going to extecd all the way to Matrouh. You do know that Matrouh is not a very well-known town.

Not true.

The project consists of 2 segements, Cairo-Alexandria, then from Alexandria-Matrouh, covering nearly all the resorts of the North Coast.

The Cairo-Alexandria segement, is EXTREMELY busy all year round, with cargo, passengers everything. The project aims to facilitate more opportunities for transport, and to reduce accidents on the over-busy road.

The second, Alexandria-matrouh segement is also very, very, very busy, mostly in Summer time, as most Egyptians flock to the North Coast to escape Cairo. Th current "highway" between Alex and Matrouh is onl two lanes each way!! Some of it has no lighting, and its very busy, and there are lots and lots of accidents on it that I have seen myself.

This project is also very important because its part of the plan to develop the North Coast as a tourist destination equal to the red sea. And this highway will encourage investment, and more people in the area

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0267.jpg

Btw guys, my cousin ahd an accident on this part of the highway ^^ the other day :ohno:

Him and his friend were on the far left lane, and there was a car in the lane to his right, and he put on teh headlights and honked so the guy doesnt come in his way, but the guy went into his lane, and struck his car in the side.

he hit the cement blocks on the left 3 times, and then the car was thrown to the other side of teh road.

Thank god, he was fine, he only had a few scratches. its a miracle, the accident could have killed him. But the car was destroyed, and wont work again.

And the guy who crashed into him stopped to see if he was ok, and wehn he saw he was ok, he ran off!!! Can you beleive that!!!

xAbd0o
December 20th, 2009, 12:03 AM
O_O are you serious? I hope he's okey.

BTW the alex-cairo highway should take a title, TBH I have never traveled throw that highway without finding any accident, that day 22 vehicles crashed, I don't want to say what type of vehicles but yeah it's a true tragedy, and very shameful if a tourists used that highway.

egypt69
December 20th, 2009, 12:09 AM

That's really amazing. Alex is Egypt's largest port right?

Among the most important ports are Alexandria which is the biggest port in Egypt, Dekheila Port which is a natural extend to Alexandria Port. Damietta Port which has the largest container terminal and most sophisticated equipments in the Middle East, and ports Said and Suez at both ends of the Suez canal.

http://www.rafimar.com/ports/images/egy-map01.jpg
http://www.rafimar.com/ports/index_ports.htm

So this highway project will definitely benefit these ports as well.

The desert isn't a waste after all.. With Solar Energy Potential and you can still transform it into something very useful

Oh yes, definitely. Most of the highway lights and billboards have solar panels to power them.

Also, the Ambulance Stations on the highways are powered by Solar power, check it:

http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/CairoBoy94/IMG_0252.jpg

Speaking of which, this Highway network will have a very efficient Emergency system. As well as 2 dedicated lanes, these ambulance stations have been increased. The Ambulances are newly acquired Volkswagens less than a year old, and have world-class equipment.

Also, 2 helicopter ambulances are being added dedicated to this stretch of highway. And the new ambulances are fitted with GPS, and calls are monitored through a GPS tracking operations center.

BUTEMBO21

Its damn sad the kind of leadership we have.

I understand man. If we measured the ratio of each of our country's potential to what it has actully achieved. Then both of us have achieved a tiny percentage of what we can achieve.

Both of us have so much potential, btu its all going to waste due to leadership :ohno:

Several of my family members used the new highway recently, and feedback has extremely positive. They said the quality of the roads was excellent, and it felt much safer than before.

I will be travelling on this highway myself within the coming days, and I will do my best to get you pics and construction updates, no promises though.

Yes! You see that render you posted? Those are one of the renders I mentioned in my first post, which I lost.

Look at the render carefully, you'll notice that the highwa includes a 4-lane carriageway each way, as well as a 2 lane side road on each side.

I can confirm to you the nearly ALL the main carriageway (the 4 lane one) in the Alex-Cairo direction (southbound) has been completed, lighting and all, and they're working on completing the side roads.

Meanwhile, the main carriageway (the 4 lane one) in the Cairo-Alex direction (Northbound), only around 50 km of has been completed, the rest is still the same 2 lane road we've had for years.

But they're working fast on it, and like the article says mid-2011 sounds reasonable.

As for flyovers and bridges, there are several undercontruction, nearly done across the highway, I also noticed a new hospital being built on the highway (I think it will serve as a trauma center for accidents), as well as several Ambulance Stations, equipped with the new Volkswagen ambulances I mentioned in the Emergency Services thread.

You should see the pics I got for this project, I have a really comprehensive update coming for you guys soon.

Cool. I can't wait for your update. but that two lane road is it in anyway or any part linked with the main 4 lane highway?? I mean what's the point of it?? is it for truck use?

egypt69
August 6th, 2010, 05:25 PM
It is linked with the highway when there are certain exits on the side of the highay such as gas stations, resedential areas, restaurants. Its so that people dont exit directly from the highway. I think its also used for Emergency Vehicles too.

Alright I see, we have the same system here, but without that barrier. and each lane have it's speed. so that one is used to slow down. very nice to see it in Egypt.

Sorry, but I need to correct you here. Suez Canal Container Terminal (East Port Said, not West) is much more bigger terminal than Damietta. It is actually becoming one of the biggest and most important transhipment HUBs in the whole mediteranean region (among Algeciras, Gioia Tauro and Tangier). Due to perfect position, very good leadership (APM Terminals) is growing extraordinary. It's used by many TOP containership companies in the world. The productivity is also much higher than in Damietta due to new equ and good stuff.

^^

AS you can see from the above render, the highway is composed of a 4-lane carriageway each way, as well as a 2 lane side road on each side.

Here are some pics I took this summer of progress on the project.

I took these pics in August 2010, on my way to Marina El Alamein.

Northbound, Cairo-Alexandria

This is the area before the toll booth

Right After toll booth, Alex Bound as you can see they still hadn't put up the side barriers. They completed and leveled the 4-lane main carriageway, but the 2 lane side road hadn't been completed :

At this point, I exited to Wadi El Natroun road, which takes me Marina, since I wasn't going to Alexandria. So I didn't see how far progress was on the last 50 Km stretch of Highway to Alexandria.

Right now, you still have to make a U-Turn to take the exit to Wadi El Natroun road which takes you to Marina. But since they are aiming to completely eliminate U-Turns from the highway, to make it safer, here is the flyover under construction, which will allow an easy interchange for those on the Cairo-Alex Highway, and wanting to get on the Wadi El Natroun road.

Flyover to Wadi El Natroun Under Construction:

Continuing from the last post. Its now the end of summer, time to head back to Cairo.

Southbound, Alexandria - Cairo

Again, Wadi El Natroun flyover into Cairo-Alex highway under construction:

On the main Highway now. As you will see, the Main 4-Lain Carriageway has been completed. They also finished most of the Side Barriers, and FINALLY, the highway is fully lit now. There are lights across the entire highway, something we've long been waiting for! Its a really smooth, even and very comfortable, safe ride. For the majority of the Highway, the only thing left to work on were the 2 lane Side Roads, and the flyovers:

As you can see.

Things that have been completed:

Main 4 Lane Carriageway
Majority of Side Barriers
Lighting. Highway is now finally fully lit

Things still under construction:

2 Lane Side Road
Flyovers
Tunnels

Overall, there has been great progress so far. The quality of the Highway has improved drastically from the old road that used to exist between Cairo and Alexandria. It is now wide, smooth, even, level, fully illuminated at night, and over all, a safe, comfortable drive.

I used this highway at least a dozen times in the past few weeks. I'll be uploading pics soon, but let's say it's amazing. The highway is so smooth and safe, good signage and lighting, very smooth and easy ride.

Construction seems to have been ongoing, because some flyovers and bridges are still under construction. The main carraigeway (4 lanes each way) as well as the 2 lane side road have been completed. I say one more year by far and the flyovers, bridges and tunnels left will be complete.

It's about 6 months old but we get a good idea at least! I hope this thing ends soon, we have other infrastructure projects to be focussing on. It should have been like this 20 years ago.

This program follows a group of riders who meet regularly. On this episode, their trip is along the Cairo-Alex desert road, half of which is under construction. The other half seems to be complete :) and looks good.

They spend most of the time chatting (as egyptians do) but if you keep watching into the second half of the clip there are a lot of nice shots of them enjoying the road :)

Have you never been to Egypt?
Also, did you not watch the video three posts above of the police van driving high-speed in the wrong direction (post-jan25)?
I swear if Egypt doesn't start implementing serious punishments against corrupt animals who drive like this, people will continue to be killed on the roads.

I've been in Egypt 7 times to be precise and I know that many road user don't drive between the lines (If there are lines on the road :D ) So I was quite surprised to see that they are driving between the lines in the last 2 photos. I think you misunderstood what I said :)
