MAD Architects has recently completed the design for the Taichung Convention Center, its first project in Taiwan commissioned by the Taichung city government.

The design is conceived as a continuous weave of architecture and landscape that blurs the boundary between architecture, public space and urban landscape, proposing a futuristic vision based on the East 's naturalistic philosophy. The open courtyards that connect the individual 'mountain' are integrated into a natural sequence of outdoor spaces. Like the quest for a harmonic coexistence between people and nature exemplified by Forbidden City and ancient Chinese gardens, this project seeks greater meaning in its non-material qualities, spaces encircled with the upmost naturalistic spirit. A single tree, a patch of bamboo, or a pond become central figures of the space. This approach to sustainable development is based not on technology, but on traditional philosophy and aesthetics.

The city of Taichung requires a metropolitan landmark that goes beyond the local to renew urban life and redefine the cultural landscape of the city, that, through unique architectural concepts and proposing a new kind of architectural philosophy, launch Taichung into the arena of world class cultural cites. Today's landmark buildings are no longer characterized by mere considerations for height, but have turned to cultural inquiries into the future and nature. More than making visual impacts, landmark buildings should foster public recreation, and inspire communication and imagination.

The site for this project is inherently characterized by an energy-rich landscape. Under its calm surface, topological potentials await to be discovered and expressed as urban landmarks. On the one hand, the architecture's crater-shaped formation and resulting rotundas are the outcome of found site conditions. On the other hand, it simultaneously shapes and influences the surrounding environment, opening up a dialogue between architecture and landscape. The surface of the 'mountains' is a high-tech, eco-friendly pleated skin system. The smocking-like envelope provides air flow to the building while keeping energy consumption at a minimum by utilizing solar energy.

The open courtyards that connect the individual 'mountains' are integrated into a natural sequence of outdoor spaces. This approach to sustainable development is based not on technology, but on traditional philosophy and aesthetics.

this looks like disney world's space mountain to me. :P

i have a feeling this wont get built, just like the taichung guggenheim and i have a feeling the taichung metropolitan opera house too. they all are very over the top projects, more pomp than practical with difficult construction techniques which means too expensive to build especially for taiwan whose developers always value frugality over ambitious cutting edge design.

I think that Taichung has some interesting things going on, including the Opera House. I really can't wait till all of these are approved.

i dont know what's going on with taichung convention center and if they are still planning to build it. maybe our knowledgeable friend william chung can tell us as he knows everything that's going on in taiwan.

but this design by arup is just AWESOME!! i know some different renderings of it were posted in this forum before. but i'll repost here again. see, this is the kind of groundbreaking radical innovative architecture taiwan needs!!!

Sustainability embedded into the design from the beginning.
Renewable energy sources include wind turbines, photovoltaic panels and solar thermal energy.
Prevailing wind direction was incorporated into the design to utilise summer breezes.

Located in the Taichung City Precision Machinery Innovation Park, the Taichung Convention Center Mixed-use Development is set to be a new sustainability icon that aims to be the first LEED® Platinum–certified commercial development in Taiwan.

As the lead consultant, Arup provided an all inclusive integrated design consultancy of this commercial mixed-use complex spreading across 7ha. The complex comprises a convention centre, service centre, a pair of 150m high hotel and office towers and a retail podium.

Inspired by the mathematical 'Klein bottle', the convention centre is highly recognisable with its aerodynamic form while allowing for optimised ventilation around the building onto the public plaza. The concept for the low-rise commercial buildings as well as the site landscaping echoes the surrounding natural hilly landscape of Taichung. The towers are an extension of this idea; together they form a 'pixilated landscape' in harmony with the natural environment.
Sustainability

With Arup's integrated approach, sustainability was embedded from the very beginning and served as one of the major drivers during the design process. Across the entire development, a number of active sustainable design strategies have been incorporated including wind turbines, photovoltaic panels and solar thermal energy. Numerous passive design features such as natural ventilation, natural light, and a performance hybrid building façade will be adopted. Anticipated overall energy demand is reduced by about 48%.

At the masterplan level, the positioning of all buildings were carefully considered together with prevailing wind direction in allowing summer breeze into the plaza, creating a fantastic microclimate. All water will be collected and recycled in response to the water shortage problems in Taichung. With extensive green roofs, terraces, atria and vegetation, the site will become the largest green commercial hub in the region.

Given Taiwan's seismic activity, the office and hotel towers utilise a ductile reinforced concrete core and special cost-effective, seismic resistant moment frames. The space between the buildings will serve as an urban plaza for the public, large enough to accommodate exhibitions, performances, fashion shows and other special events.

The notion of sustainable design goes beyond the environment, contributing to the sustainability of society and the economy. With a wide array of amenities designed with optimum flexibility, Taichung Convention Center Mixed-use Development is expected to generate an economic buzz – the 'Taichung effect'.
