In Newcastle we are very fortunate, in my view, to have THREE large City Centre educational establishments, each boasting a large City Centre Campus.
Also, at this moment in time, all three are contributing to the list of new developments in the city, by investing large sums of money in new buildings and major campus re-organisations.
I think I am fairly familiar with the recent, current and planned developments at
NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY, and
NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
and I know there has already been individual threads set up on the sub-forum, to cover them.
However, and this is a 'personal' view, I find that I am less aware of what goes on in the NEWCASTLE COLLEGE campus, than I am with the other two.
Perhaps it is because I visit that part of the City Centre (North and East) more often than I visit the 'West' City Centre . . anyway, I know that a lot has happened on the large Newcastle College Campus in recent years (perhaps someone has photos of some of this?) and that recently even more new developments were announced, with the acquisition of a large area of land next to the existing college campus . . .

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv345/manorpark_photos/NewcastleCollegeCampusexpansion001.jpg
Perhaps we could use this thread to monitor developments (as we do in the Newcastle and Northumbria University threads) and also to show some of the progress made recently . . .
.
johnnypd October 21st, 2009, 08:23 PM Good idea for a thread. been quite a few buildings going up round here recently. can't say i am too impressed with the build quality or integration into the surrounding context though. The two huge boxes they've built in the scotswood road carpark are pretty poor on both counts, large expanses of blank wall and cheap metal sheeting makes them look like slightly tarted up light-industrial units. They're also surrounded by poor landscaping, fencing that separates it from the street, surface carparking and random grass verges. The College has also refurbished a former industrial building on George Street for their Teaching Development Centre which looks fine, though I imagine with their big plans it will only be a temporary measure.
Up the hill they've been a bit better though, because the new building on Westmoreland Road respects the street pattern and also integrates a handsome old building into the design:

johnnypd October 21st, 2009, 08:25 PM some more news:
Watson Burton advises Newcastle College on Purchase of Landmark Site
Newcastle College have completed the purchase of a landmark site in a deal worth £1.5million. The College has purchased the former BP site on Scotswood Road, Newcastle to allow further development of their City Centre Campus.
The College is now working on plans for what promises to be an exciting development. On the site, which is located on one of the main thoroughfares into the City, just off the Redheugh Bridge, the College hopes to construct an iconic building to add to the array of landmarks across the City.
Regional law firm Watson Burton LLP advised the College on what proved to be a complex transaction involving both Newcastle City Council and BP.
Watson Burton Associate Deborah Jameson said “This was a complex deal for our property team as we had to ensure acquisition of the freehold and leasehold interest in the site. Everything went smoothly and we are pleased to have successfully completed the deal on behalf of the College.”
Jeff McCall, Director of Estates at Newcastle College, said “Once again Watson Burton provided an exemplary service, they knew what was required, provided commercially aware advice and moved quickly and efficiently to complete the deal.
We are delighted with the purchase. The site is adjacent to our City Centre Campus making it ideal for our expansion. The high visibility of the location provides us with the opportunity to develop another iconic building for the region which will also be recognised as a symbol of the success of the College at this gateway site. More importantly, the development will create jobs in the region and allow us to expand our offering both in terms of capacity and the range of courses available.”
The purchase comes at an exciting time for the College having recently received an ‘outstanding’ report from OFSTED and following last years purchase of Carter & Carter Plc which allowed the College to expand its services nationwide.

gregstone December 17th, 2010, 02:13 PM It got consent at the second attempt but by then the recession was in full effect and there was never going to be much point in adding a few hundred more apartments that were never going to sell.
Vico sold the land to the College for a planned expansion, but the College was then hit by the previous Govt running out of cash for the Building Colleges for the Future fund so it is semi-derelict at present (Bristol St Motors site)

Yeah a big suprise to me - Neer knew Newcastle College had any developments like this is the pipeline and in such a grotty area of newcastle city centre (and one of the main entrance points) it would be a real tribute. Other than this website though I haent heard anything more........?
WilfBurnsFan December 17th, 2010, 07:19 PM I remember some vague newspaper talk that Newcastle College was (possibly by merger, possibly alone) thinking about going for university status; maybe these expansion plans were tied to that.
Newcastle Historian December 18th, 2010, 09:50 AM I have searched on the Newcastle College Website, and I cannot find any information on expansion or new building. I think any plans have been shelved for now.
Also, is the "VICO Triangle" the same triangle of development that is shown in Post 1 of this thread?
They seem to be different areas, but very near eachother.

Newcastle Historian January 8th, 2011, 10:44 AM Northumberland College agrees to merger
with Newcastle College Group (NCG)
January 8th 2011, by David Black, The Journal
http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/nejournal/mar2010/8/9/northumberland-college-299688677.jpg
A TROUBLE-PLAGUED North East college is looking to secure its future by merging with a counterpart on Tyneside.
Governors at the 2,500-student Northumberland College have agreed in principle to become part of the Newcastle College Group (NCG) in a move which aims to safeguard the future of the Ashington-based college.
Northumberland College, whose principal resigned four months ago, has been hit by industrial unrest, financial problems and the collapse of major building plans in recent years.
Now governors have chosen NCG – which includes Newcastle College, Skelmersdale and Ormskirk College in Lancashire and Sheffield-based national training and employability organisation Intraining – as their merger partner to take Northumberland College forward.
The merger, which could take up to a year to complete, will have to be ratified by the Education Secretary Michael Gove.
The move follows a two-year period in which Northumberland College has seen £100m campus modernisation plans put on indefinite hold because of funding problems, strike action by staff in protest at job losses, management restructuring and a major review of its business model.
Governors hope the merger will allow the further education establishment to tap into, and benefit from, NCG’s financial clout, educational excellence and strong leadership and management.

STAFF at Newcastle College were facing an uncertain future yesterday as bosses announced plans for more than 170 redundancies.
Teaching staff are most at risk, with more than 120 positions facing the chop, while managerial and support posts are also in danger.
The mass redundancies were revealed after bosses received indicative funding allocations for next year, which will see £3.3m cut from its income for 2011/2012 funds.
Last night, union leaders slammed the decision to axe teaching jobs at the college’s main site in Newcastle.

FEARS over the potential impacts of merging two North East colleges will be raised with a Government minister by two local MPs next week.
Wansbeck’s Ian Lavery and Blyth Valley’s Ronnie Campbell are setting up the meeting with further education minister John Hayes to make him aware of growing concerns over the proposed merger of Northumberland College with Newcastle College.
Both MPs have backed a protest campaign against the plan – which opponents say is a potentially damaging takeover of the Ashington-based college by the powerful Newcastle College Group (NCG).
Fears have been voiced about “asset stripping” and the future of campuses at Ashington and Kirkley Hall, possible job and pay cuts, the choice of courses available at Northumberland College and the loss of local control if the merger goes ahead. If formal approval is then granted by the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable, the assets and liabilities of Northumberland College will be transferred to Newcastle College Group.

Newcastle Historian July 13th, 2011, 10:56 AM Newcastle College Group defends rebranding move
by Nicola Weatherall, The Journal, July 13th 2011
A TEACHING UNION has accused the management of a North East college of wiping out all traces of its Geordie roots in a rebranding of its umbrella company.
The University and College Union (UCU) say staff were told that Newcastle College Group had been rebranded as NCG to remove any reference to the city.
In a staff newsletter sent out via email, teachers and lecturers were told not to use “Newcastle” in any form of communication and to refer only to NCG.
The union has labelled the move “de-Geordification”, but NCG’s management says it is still proud of its North East connections.
The news comes as NCG is diverting resources away from the region to fund its national training company, Intraining, which has just won contracts to run services in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside.
Jackie Fisher, chief executive of NCG, said: “The University and College Union claims are simply not true.
“We previously referred to the group as Newcastle College Group. The group comprises of three divisions; Newcastle College, West Lancashire College and Intraining, based in Sheffield operating over a national footprint, so we rebranded as 'NCG' to provide clarity between Newcastle College and the wider activities of the group across the UK".

Public consultation fails to back college plans
by David Black, The Journal, July 18th 2011
A PUBLIC consultation on controversial plans to merge two North East colleges has resulted in 63% saying they oppose the move.
The proposed merger of Northumberland College with the Newcastle College Group (NCG) has been described by critics as a potentially damaging ‘takeover’ of the Ashington-based further education institution by its larger Tyneside counterpart.
Last month Northumberland College lecturers and students staged a protest march and rally, and the anti-merger campaign has been backed by local MPs Ian Lavery and Ronnie Campbell and Ashington Town Council.
Now a formal public consultation – carried out by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) – has resulted in 63% of respondents opposing the merger.

Tynemouth MP's concern over college merger plans
by Nicola Weatherall, The Journal, August 1st 2011
A NORTH EAST MP last night expressed his concerns over a college merger plan which he fears could lead to a "monopoly" over further education in the region.
Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell is writing to Vince Cable, secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, to express his doubts over Newcastle College Group’s plans to merge with Northumberland College, in Ashington.
He said: “I am worried about what this proposal could mean for post-16 education for young people who live North of the Tyne.
“I am concerned it would give Newcastle College a monopoly and I do not think that is in the best, long-term interests of the students.
“There is no doubt Newcastle College is very successful and good at what it does, but I think partnership working and building a federation between the colleges in the region is the way forward – not mergers and takeovers.”

This site was planned to be a new sixth form college building which had got held up due to the FE sector funding squeeze (politician's note: introduced by the last Lab govt not the Coalition), so am glad to see that this looks like progressing. Not sure what the Bristol Street site plan is though.

Yes, and we were coincidentally just discussing that very fact on the Discovery Quarter thread, yesterday . . .
What ever happened to the Vico proposal for the site covering the casino up to the museum?
There is some information on this earlier in this thread, at Posts 4 and 10 . . .
Regarding the Discovery Quarter- it would be brilliant that those awful buildings right infront on the museum where to be demolished- the museum is a great building hidden by the backsides of some long gone era buildings.
The Vico development says that their current application is for their phase one (the pictures on here of that phase one), but if you look at their website a much better pictureshows the whole development and this clearly show that the whole devlopment includes further phases that include the old hostel down to the casino right next to St James Boulevard. So the junction of Westmoreland Rd south is already in Vico's plans. We just need to get rid of that bloody Hostel!!
Vico have sold their site to Newcastle College.
The scheme was of marginal viability before the recession and an apartment driven scheme is unlikely to proceed now. However the Govt public spending crisis has also hit the college's plan to develop this area as part of their expansion plans.
In terms of Blandford Square I would imagine that in common with the rest of the Blvd not much will come forward whilst times are hard.

Just to provide some info on this. The new sixth form building will start construction in the next 2-3 weeks. The hoardings around the old car garages have been put up as this will be used as the storage area for all the building materials/machinery. No development is taking place on that site.
The plan for the "triangle" area will be a UTC if Newcastle College wins the bid. Should be more news on that before the end of the year.

COLLEGE chiefs last night unveiled plans to build an innovative Sixth Form centre on Tyneside that will provide a state-of-the-art centre for learning.
Newcastle College will extend their current Rye Hill campus to house a new centre inside a new 11,000 square metre building.
It is not yet known how much the project will cost, but the facility will extend the college’s facilities to provide A level and AS Level qualifications in Newcastle.
Last night officials from Newcastle College released artist’s impressions of the new building and said the development will help cement their place as one of the country’s leading centres for further education.
Bev Robinson, Principal of Newcastle College, said: “We are delighted to announce our plans for Newcastle Sixth Form College.
“The college’s long standing commitment is to re-invest in learning which serves the needs of our students, industry partners and the wider community.
The Newcastle Sixth Form College has been designed by international architects RMJM. The college has also worked with consultant Turner Townsend as well as main contractor, BAM North East.
RMJM Studio Director, Conor Pittman said: “The new college will be a fantastic facility for learning and will help enhance its excellent reputation in the North East of England

On completion of the 6th form building both the Parsons and Trevelyen towers will be refurbished, with Trevelyen most likely being first. It will be the same as they did with the Sandyford campus, ripped right back to the shell and updated. They won't be demolished as planning permission for something of a similar height probably wouldn't get the green light.
Stagknight August 12th, 2011, 08:05 PM Well in my day, Trevelian was building and construction services. Parsons was humanities, business studies, science and performing arts, Cambridge street was child care and physical education training, Sandyford road building was catering and beauty and Bath lane was art.
During that time they decided to move art onto main campus and built the Mandela building. This went down badly with the students as it was built on the student car park! After a large amount of campaigning we were told new car parking would be provided, we went off for a weeks holiday thinking that as the staff car park at Parsons only ever had 8 cars in it would be shared, when we came back how ever we were greeted by the sight of diggers removing our football field behind parsons to build a new car park on. And the staff car park still only had 8 cars on it.
Irish Blood English Heart August 13th, 2011, 02:58 AM I remember being there just after Mandella opened it seemed so modern, now it looks ancient!
I also remember the asian newsagents on the industrial estate that every student went to, it was a Godsend at lunchtime!
growly grace August 13th, 2011, 09:04 AM I was watching "Wire in the Blood" (as you do) and noticed that the Mandella building was used as a hospital for the criminally insane and some how that was fitting.
The printing and bookbinding class rooms were in the basement.
Newcastle Historian September 12th, 2011, 09:44 AM Business Minister criticises Newcastle College Group boss
by Adrian Pearson, The Journal, September 12th 2011
THE region’s largest college has been accused of shifting resources to other parts of the country while cutting jobs on Tyneside.
Newcastle North MP Catherine McKinnell has criticised NCG, the parent company of Newcastle College, for putting 180 staff at risk of redundancy at the same time that chief executive Dame Jackie Fisher got a one-off bonus of £72,788 on top of an annual salary of £186,984.
The group has added a college in Lancashire and a national training group to its business while it is also in talks with Northumberland College over a merger.
The college says any surpluses generated in Newcastle are reinvested in learning in the city and it has recently announced plans for a new sixth-form college following multi-million-pound investments in other facilities in recent years.
Last night, Ms McKinnell said the ongoing situation at Newcastle College was a cause for concern adding “so many jobs are being cut across both the public and private sector as a result of the Coalition’s savage public spending cuts, and the last thing we need at the moment is to be reducing the number of people whose role it is to train the workforce of the present and the future".
“There are also concerns about NCG’s plans to continue its expansion when it is making a large number of people in Newcastle redundant."

COLLEGE chiefs last night unveiled plans to build an innovative Sixth Form centre on Tyneside that will provide a state-of-the-art centre for learning.
Newcastle College will extend their current Rye Hill campus to house a new centre inside a new 11,000 square metre building.

Newcastle Historian November 17th, 2011, 10:15 AM Northumberland College pulls out of deal to
merge with Newcastle College
by Emma King, The Journal, November 17th 2011
A MERGER between two of the region’s biggest colleges has collapsed just weeks before it was due to go ahead.
The plans to merge Northumberland College with NCG, the parent company of Newcastle College, collapsed after governors at Northumberland decided to pull out of the deal.
The announcement came just days after Newcastle College said that it would spend £25m on facilities in Northumberland, including a new vocational campus to be built in Cramlington and improvements to the college’s Ashington headquarters.
Yesterday a statement from Northumberland College said that the board had pulled out because it felt the merger proposal agreed in July had “materially changed” and “no longer represented the best solution for students, staff, stakeholders and the local community”.
The board will now consider other options to secure the future of Northumberland College, although no details of these options have yet been revealed.
Chris Todd, acting principal at Northumberland College, said: “Students, staff and stakeholders did not want this merger to happen."

by Adrian Pearson, The Journal, February 28th 2012
http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/nejournal/aug2011/0/0/newcastle-college-833944960.jpg
A CITY leader has withdrawn council support from the region’s biggest college amid fears its free school plan will damage education across Tyneside. Council leader Nick Forbes has written to Newcastle College bosses accusing them of backing an “outrageous and highly inflammatory” attack on local schools.
He claims this was made by education chiefs in order to advance a new bid to set up a free school in Newcastle. In a letter to college governors, copied to all the head teachers in the city and the chief executive of NCG, parent group of Newcastle College, Mr Forbes said NCG’s plan to open a free school in the city’s West End is something his administration is “vehemently opposed to”.
But last night NCG chief executive Dame Jackie Fisher said her group “believes in young people, and believes they deserve a high quality education that gives them the right qualifications and experience to progress into good quality, sustainable jobs, higher education, or a solid, worthwhile apprenticeship”.
The row started when at a meeting last Wednesday John Collings, executive director of children’s services at the council, was informed that NCG would be submitting a bid to ministers this week to create a free school.

I didn't realise we already had a Newcastle City Mayor (Supreme Leader) who can unilaterally withdraw support himself.
Does the rest of the council not have a say?
The council is obviously frightened it's grip on educational provision is being loosened by other educational providers.
As someone who went throught the state comprehensive system in the city I would welcome an alternative to be offered

They must be doing something right then!
bigchrisfgb March 5th, 2012, 07:22 PM What is the opposition about the free school about?
In Newcastle's West end there isn't enough schools, they are all overcrowded and most are under performing. Even the academy at Scotswood is under performing despite having state of the art new facilities. I can't see why councillors and other schools would oppose a new school being run from an organisation who are proven at getting the best results out of students. In this case I would see it being a win win case for the students which is whats needed. We need another school in the area to ease the pressure off the other schools and we need a school in the area to out perform the others so that other schools start to shake themselves up and start performing well so that we have more schools offering our students and children a real and successful education.
Seamaster March 5th, 2012, 07:53 PM What is the opposition about the free school about?
The usual. Vested interests.
bigchrisfgb March 5th, 2012, 10:20 PM The usual. Vested interests. How though?, how would a councillor be losing out?, I can understand how other schools may lose out, loss of students therefor money and the chance of being shown up in Ofsted reports etc, but how can city councillors be against it?

Make your own mind up.It's disgusting how some of our cities schools are doing so poorly. It seems to be the ones that our free as well which is such a shame. If I had children and I had enough money then theirs no way I would let one of my kids go to one of those schools, in fact I would even drive one of my children to a better performing school in North Tyneside or even Northumberland.

Because Labour politicians are collectively ashamed at how that whole "education, education, education" thing worked out, and they cannot countenance the idea that there might be a better way to give our children a decent education other than lowest common denominator comprehensives and p¡ss-easy GCSEs.

Newcastle College unveils its new Energy Academy
A “REBIRTH” of the River Tyne has been predicted as a new energy skills centre officially opened yesterday. Newcastle College has unveiled its Energy Academy ... a dedicated centre for training for the energy sector.
The multi-million-pound facility, on Hadrian Road, Wallsend, has already started teaching students skills including welding, electronics, turbine and solar-panel testing and diagnostics.
College bosses are hoping the academy will revitalise the Tyne as a centre of industry. Robin Ghurbhurun, deputy principal of Newcastle College, said: “For us, we’re part of the rebirth of the Tyne. What the academy will deliver is the skilled workforce that is required not just today, but by the future investments and ventures that will come along the banks of the Tyne.”

Newcastle Historian August 17th, 2012, 10:04 AM Newcastle College downgraded after Ofsted inspection
by Adrian Pearson, The Journal, August 17th 2012
NEWCASTLE College has been downgraded following a confrontational Ofsted inspection. Dame Jackie Fisher, chief executive of Newcastle College parent company NCG, has launched a formal complaint against Ofsted following the watchdog’s decision to grade the college as good rather than repeating the previous outstanding award. The Ofsted downgrade was widely expected following an inspection in May in which the team of monitors were asked to leave the premises.
College sources said at the time that senior staff and inspectors had had heated disagreements. The team returned to complete its inspection in June.
Dame Jackie last night said she was “astounded but not surprised” at the final outcome, saying there were obvious flaws in the inspection process. The Ofsted report does cite many areas in which the college excels, with ony a handful of issues raised over the “variable” level of support for some students.
Dame Jackie said: “The inspectors ran out of superlatives to describe us, there are more than a hundred mentions of words such as outstanding, exceptional, excellent, superb and successful, more than four on every page. The inspectors’ report reads just like that of the handful of other outstanding providers, which is no surprise because I know we are outstanding. As the inspectors found, we offer exceptional teaching and learning which is among the best in the country.”

Fab building! Does this mean the old hostel is history??
jkkne May 17th, 2013, 01:10 AM Brilliant scheme. For many the Boulevard is an entry point to Newcastle and it should look its best
AngerOfTheNorth May 17th, 2013, 11:21 AM Wow! I'm not convinced that they'll be able to build that building to look at sharp and shiny as that render, however that'd be a pretty impressive frontage onto the boulevard. I've got a lot of respect for the way Newcastle College have redeveloped their campus.
