Fantastic match today, spoilt only by a hideous piece of bad luck, inconsistent refereeing, and Wenger's whinging and generally shit personal conduct (plus twas a bit chilly). My other half is Arsenal through and through but sits with me amongst the home fans - interesting. :)

Elmohamedy and Henderson stood out in particular, as well as a solid tactical performance by Bruce. Thought the MOTD coverage was a travesty of the actual performance.

Brilliant game, and good result. Though we actually deserved all 3 points, not complaining though!

Re the pink man who invaded the mitched during the Villa mtch.

It turns out that he was Irish (stayed in TJ Doyes Deptford at the weekend ) and did it to raise money for the Gary Kelly cancer charity. Gary Kelly the former Leeds player lost his sister with breast cancer and he was the first footballer to donate his testimonial takings to charity. Ten days before Niall Quinns benefit match.

That explains while the guy shook referee Mark Hasleys hand as the offical has recently recovered from cancer.

And then of course next Sunday, the lumpen-proles from down the road travel from the regional shit-hole to the regional capital. The slack-jawed dullards have been getting mighty giddy about their elevated status over the last few seasons on the back of Hedge Fund yank Ellis Short and his gobshite puppet Niall “if he’s not dying his hair I’ll show my big white spotty Geordie arse in Fenwick’s window“) Quinn. Any of you who come into contact with the Village of the Damned fatties know they are looking to not only beat us at SJP but actually take 6 points from us this season. They are in confident, if not bullish mood and travel north (well some of them, most of their players live in Newcastle-Gateshead as they couldn’t bear to live in Albania-on-Wear amongst the great unwashed) fully expectant to give us a pasting. For the first time in living memory we are the underdogs in a local derby. We have to deal with our reduced status under Ashley but playing second fiddle to the Mackem mediocrities shouldn’t be something to be allowed to last for long. We are underdogs because of the money invested in players down the road and due to the catastrophic mismanagement of the club from Hall-Shepherd now to Ashley. Off the park, Quinn must look north to SJP, clock our attendances and the loyalty that exists to our just and righteous cause and wonder why the Wearside public won’t give him and Short the kind of support they gave Reid and Murray ten years ago. It is a genuinely bewildering position. It was ever thus.
There will be a special Barrack Road welcome awaiting Steve Bruce. The marshmallow man and fat headed prick has taken the Mackem shilling and sold his soul to the Red & White devil. There has always been something of the creep about Bruce - the tedious, if now previous, proclamations of Geordie-ness and the unbearable scenty-bottle twang that shames his background on the Wallsend/Walker border spell out loud and clear exactly what this bad phoney has become. The job-hopper will be at the Village of the Damned as long as it suits his motives for career development but at the first whiff of something he imagines is better, he’ll be off whilst the average (very average) low-browed Mackem will scream for his Mag head (some head) on the back of two losses. It is an uneasy relationship between club and manager - a careerist at the home of his first tribe’s fiercest foes barely tolerated by a support with a famously small-time view of the world. Altogether now .. “Stevie Bruce has got a very large head, has got a very large head” (repeat to fade).
For Bruce read Bramble. To be fair to Bramble he’s so fucking thick he probably doesn’t know who his team is playing from one week to the next and the lump cannot be relied upon to recognise his surroundings next week. A special welcome awaits that knacka too.
I’m sure most Mags would agree with me when I implore the manager, staff and players to give absolutely everything on the pitch next Sunday. To leave nothing in the dressing room. We are the underdogs now, Sunderland are framing themselves as the NE’s top club with some justification, their fat fans believe they are better than us, follow a better club and that the balance of power, so long on the Tyne, has swung to the Wear. They believe this coming derby affords them the opportunity to emphasise that superiority and they dream of little more than rubbing our faces in it, after years of humiliation rained down on them by their famous neighbours up the road in the big city. Our European adventures have given us the perspective on this provincial dispute and our cosmopolitan, European city has this game in proportion but one thing is certain, we want to win and SJP, our only, our historic home will roar that desire from every nook and cranny, man and woman, young and old this coming Sunday.
Come on United!
Keep On, Keepin’ On …

Bitter much?

This should hang in the players dressing room on Sunday.....

Well...I agree Sunderland is a bit naff compared to Newcastle to say the least talking of the cities. But historically Sunderland has been the best team in the north east, it was only really the 90s when we had a down spell at the same time Newcastle had a up spell that things were flipped.
And saying its just down to Short we're where we are today? That we're only good because of the money? err? What? No. Sunderland's resurgance is from before him. We haven't really splashed the cash all that much at all lately (except for the new chap who has yet to do anything...)
Some cheek from Newcastle to say Sunderland are the ones without heart whilst at the same time put down Sunderland for being a smaller city. Commercial city boy gits.

True - for one season, after which Sunderland beat Newcastle in the play-off final in, I think, 1990. Perhaps Tyr should have said that things flipped somewhere around the appointment of McMenemy, before which Sunderland - from the turn of the last century, through the glorious interwar years, the golden Carter and the Bank of England eras - generally had been the bigger of the two clubs (and certainly the most successful of the two teams). The recent reversion to form has obviously taken some on the black and white side of the divide by surprise. Those who believe football began in 1992, certainly.

Anyone brave enough to venture a prediction for Sunday?

I was at the match yesterday and it was a brutal performance from us.

With the exception of Phil Bardsley there was no heart and our midfield was overun even though we were playing 4 5 1.

I have always stuck up for Brucesy in the past but he got it badly wrong yesterday. When Bramble was wrongly sent off he brings Kieran Richardson on to play at left back and switches Bardsley to centre half when probably the best centre half at the club John Mensah was at that point left on the bench. That bizarre decision summed up Bruce yesterday.

Remember guys . . . everyone . . . this is our SkyscraperCity Forum, not a 'football forum' where anything goes.

:ohno:

We all get on well on here, normally, so I rarely need to have to get involved (long may that continue) but I will if needed.

Thanks for the calming words, denm.

LATER EDIT.

I had hoped the above would be enough, but it has continued.

It is simple, this is not a "football forum" and continual sniping and pointless arguing has NO PLACE on this forum, no matter what the thread title might be.

I have removed all the recent posts by (and involving/responding to) BMS100, and I will be writing to him about them.

If you disgree with my decision, please do not write to me about it, as my decision is final.

As you know, I did NOT want to get involved.

Just as well considering he was our best player again. I wonder what Bruce's chances are of persuading Sir Alex to let him come to Sunderland on a full-time basis? Probably nil if he continues to play the way he has been.

I'm afraid I regard weak link Ferdinand culpable for most of the mistakes made against Everton. The guy is a liability and how we paid £8million for a player of his quality is just beyond understanding. That said, it was a good, solid, hard-earned point against a very tough side who will probably appear very close to us in the end-of-season table.

It was great to see and thoroughly deserved, it seems ages since we won a game comfortably.

Also, as you say, good to see all three strikers score and Gyan's finish I thought was excellent. I don't think we've ever had a player with such ability at the sol.

He's clearly not been happy this season, I had put it down to his injury, but I think the fact he's asked to leave in the summer speaks for itself. Also we're getting a stupid amount of money if those reports are accurate and I doubt we'll get that much offered again in the Summer.

Agreed, 100 per cent.

Reading some of the Villa forums, it appears they think they've done one over on us. Nothing could be further from the truth.

However much they deny it, they've clearly tapped him up. He's been unsettled for ages, hence his crap form. Another consideration has been the blow to his ego of having Gyan and Welbeck grabbing headlines which were all his last season. Another has been money.

If we'd taken say £11m, then we'd have the right to feel aggrieved. As it stands I'm pleased - over the moon - that Villa, in their desperation, have paid almost treble the real value for a striker with a rubbish first touch, a shocking shots to goals ratio, an abysmal left foot and no aerial ability of which to speak.

With Bruce we have one of the best managers in our history. With Quinn and Short we have the firmest finanical foundations in our history. Our current squad is the strongest in our history. We're at sixth place in the richest, most-watched sporting league in the world.

And now we have another £24,000,000 to spend, and I trust Bruce to spend it on players who understand just what it means to play at Sunderland Football Club.

Season Tickets rise, ---from the Echo, --

Sunderland announces season ticket price riseSponsored by Lumley Castle
Sunderland fans will have to pay more to watch their team next season.
By Kevin Clark
Published on Thu Feb 17 09:46:23 GMT 2011

THE cost of watching Premier League football at the Stadium of Light is going up.

The club today announced its new season ticket prices – with increases across the board.

And it is the Black Cats’ youngest fans who face the steepest rise. The cost of a season ticket for under-16s is up £20 from £49 to £69 – a rise of more than 40 per cent.

Pensioners will be be hit too, with the cost of an over-65s season ticket rising from £285 to £300, while under-22s’ prices start from £280 next season, compared to £265 at the moment.

Adult season tickets will cost from £400 for 2011/12, up from a minimum £380.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, March 7, and fans have until 5pm on Wednesday, April 6, to take advantage of the current prices and guarantee their seat. Anyone opting to renew their ticket or buy a new one before then will again be able to spread the cost over eight months, interest free.

Martyn McFadden, editor of fanzine A Love Supreme, said he didn’t believe anyone would be put off by the increases.

He said: “It is a very small rise, really, though I don’t know if they would have been better off not having a rise and making a big thing out of that, in terms of the extra money it is going to bring in. The interest-free credit thing does help a lot of people – I have used it myself.

“A lot of people will continue to be frustrated at the amount that Premier League footballers are paid, but if we weren’t bringing in exciting players for people to watch, they would be frustrated by that and we would probably be battling the drop – it is damned if you do, damned if you don’t. We want to be battling at the top – it is the price of love really.”

Chairman Niall Quinn sparked controversy recently when he criticised supporters who choose to watch foreign broadcasts of games in the pub rather than go through the Stadium of Light turnstiles. Today he said he believed the pricing was fair and appealed to fans to back the Black Cats where it counts.

He said: “I do appreciate that with all the passion and enthusiasm in the world – which our fans certainly have – it still isn’t always an easy decision for supporters to commit financially to a season card.

I was recently given a Bobby Robson memorial medal, which lists on the reverse the list of teams he was in charge of. Along with all the well known names like PSV, Newcastle, England and Ipswich I was suprised to see 'Vancouver Royals' listed. This team, or Vancouver Royal Canadians to give them their full name turned out to be none other than Sunderland AFC, taking part in a short lived (1 season) 1967 North American soccer league called the United Soccer Association, which involved European clubs playing in the USA and Canada. Other British clubs included Dundee United (Dallas Tornado), Stoke (Cleveland Stokers!), Wolves (LA Wolves), Aberdeen (Washington Whips) and Hibernian (Toronto City). I had no idea that this league even existed. Anyone have any memories to share?

Think all those injuries certainly didn't help the cause, --I also think that there were some games when there didn't seem much fighting qualities, ----it's incredible to see such a massive slump, ---sixth off top in December and playing some very good Football, ----then come May and only another 6 points gained, it's baffling ---so apart from the decimation of the injuries, ---you have to wonder if there is something else going on, --was it down to the players, --was it down to the Manager, --I'm pleased this season is just about done.

The away win against Chelsea (which I saw) was one of the most 'complete' (excellent) performances in the Premier League (by any team) all season.

Chelsea have a quality team at the moment, with all the Russian money, and they seemed to be playing well, but were COMPLETELY outplayed.

It is incomprehensible, what has happened this season, since then!

Some news for the Supporters, -- this from the Sunderland Echo, ---

Niall Quinn

Published on Friday 17 June 2011 12:04

SUNDERLAND AFC fans are the best behaved in the land.

That is the verdict of Barclays Premier League match assessors, who have decided that Black Cats followers conducted themselves best out of all 20 top-flight sides last season.

Supporters scored consistently highly over the course of the 38-game season, with points being gained for good-natured verbal support and recognising outstanding play by opposition teams.

The honour has come with a £20,000 jackpot, which chairman Niall Quinn says the club will put towards something suggested by fans.

He said: “Sunderland fans are known for their passion and commitment and the lengths they’ll go in order to support their team.

“It’s great that they’re now also getting recognition for their spirit and respect of the game too.”

He added: “They’re the reason I fell in love with the club
