Why is the game noon today? Odd.
Suits me though, don't have to stay locked up at home all night to watch it!

That game really ruined my already not so great day.
Typical Sunderland. All over Newcastle, a million and one chances, but we don't know how to finish. We could sign Goaly McGoals, the Brazillian goal scoring robot, and he still wouldn't score for us.

BAD OLD DAYS: Highfield Hospital - also known as Sunderland Workhouse.

By Sarah Stoner
Published on Thursday 22 December 2011 10:10

CHRISTMAS Day in the workhouse may sound like the theme of a Charles Dickens tale – but it proved a harsh reality for one of the stars of Sunderland AFC.

Arnie Davison made over 100 appearances for his beloved club during a footballing career spanning two decades, even scoring the winning goal in the prestigious Durham Challenge Cup.

But, although top players can today command multi-million pound salaries, Arnie fell on hard times after losing his place on the team – eventually dying at the age of just 46 in the workhouse.

“A footballer’s career can end in the blink of an eye with a mistimed tackle, or by being struck down by illness,” said local historian Alan Brett, author of new book Sunderland At Work And Play.

“Today there are safeguards in place to ensure they are comfortably well off for the rest of their lives but, a century ago, this was not the case with Sunderland favourite Arnie Davison.”

Wearside-born Arnie signed up for SAFC in the mid-1880s. His enduring passion for the game, as well as his acclaimed skill on the ball, made him a great favourite with the fans.

The year 1887 saw Arnie help Sunderland clinch victory over Darlington in the Durham Challenge Cup and, the following season, he scored in a 4-2 win over FA Cup winners Blackburn Rovers.

One commentator at the time recalled: “His bright and cheery ways made him very popular.”

Arnie’s name was still near the top of the team sheet when SAFC started its 1888-89 season push for entry to the Football League – indeed, he scored in a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And he was also hailed as “outstanding” in a 4-1 win over the mighty Preston North End – a team dubbed The Invincibles after claiming the League and FA Cup Double without losing a game.

But the appointment of Tom Watson to the role of SAFC secretary manager at the start of the 1888-89 season was to leave local lad Arnie facing up to a bleak future.

Former Sunderland FC chairman, Sir Tom Cowie, dies
by Andrew Glover, The Journal, January 20th 2012

NORTH EAST entrepreneur and former chairman of Sunderland Football Club Sir Tom Cowie has died aged 89. It was confirmed yesterday that the former transport boss had passed away at his home in County Durham on Wednesday.

Sir Tom, who was knighted in 1992, became involved in his father’s motorcycle business soon after leaving Bede School in Sunderland, the city he loved.

He served in the RAF during the Second World War and returned to help run the family business which expanded to be a major car dealer with showrooms across the UK.

Sir Tom’s name became synonymous with public transport when Cowie Ltd bought into the bus industry. The firm became Arriva which was eventually bought by German giant Deutsche Bahn for £1.585 billion in 2010.

A keen sports fan, Sir Tom became chairman at Roker Park in 1980 and brought Laurie McMenemy to the club. He had six years at the helm before he was succeeded by Bob Murray.

The club reached the League Cup final at Wembley in 1985 during Sir Tom’s tenure.

SAFC climb the money league

Published on Thursday 9 February 2012 10:18

SUNDERLAND’S place in football’s financial big league was confirmed today.

New research from financial specialist Deloitte puts the Black Cats at number 30 in the list of the world’s top football money-spinners, with an estimated turnover during the 2010/11 season of almost £80million.

The figures highlight the importance of the Premier League to the financial success of clubs, with more than half of SAFC’s revenue coming from TV rights and prize money alone.

Last season, all 20 Premier League sides received a total of £31.7million in TV broadcast payments – £13.8million for domestic rights and £17.9million from overseas – for a set minimum number of games.

Clubs were then paid for any extra games broadcast – worth an additional £6.3million for Sunderland – and received prize money depending on their final place in the league.

Sunderland’s 3-0 win away at West Ham on the closing day of the season – coupled with Newcastle throwing away a 3-0 lead at home to West Brom – was enough to see the Black Cats climb above their North East rivals into 10th place, picking up a further £8.3million in prize money

If anything, however, today’s report undervalues the club. Deloitte’s figures include only income from the club’s ordinary footballing business activities, such as ticket sales and merchandising, as well as broadcast rights.

That means that although the figures cover a 12-month period to July 31 last year, the £79.4million turnover figure does not include the £18million Sunderland received from Aston Villa for Darren Bent in January 2011.

Nor does it include the estimated £20million paid by Liverpool for Jordan Henderson in June, or any of the income generated by events such as concerts or hosting Sunderland University’s graduation ceremony

Martyn McFadden from A Love Supreme has joined the development board of Foundation of Light

Published on Monday 28 May 2012 08:37

A BLACK Cats expert has joined his beloved team’s charity foundation.

Martyn McFadden, who runs independent fanzine A Love Supreme, has been invited to join The Foundation of Light’s board of development.

Martyn will join new recruits Darren Williams, director of Harland Corporation Ltd; Ken Bremner, chief executive of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust; and Darren Richardson, director of PR firm Gardiner Richardson, in helping guide the foundation and make crucial decisions about the charity’s work and future projects.

Martyn said it was a surprise to be invited to join the board.

“I got the letter out of the blue. At first I thought it was something to do with my season ticket. I thought about it for about two seconds and realised it was a huge honour,” he said.

Spare a thought for Darlington FC - relegated 4 divisions into the Crispy Bacon premier league or whatever - the ninth tier of English football. They finished in the bottom three of the Conference but have skipped both the Conference North and the Evo-Stick leagues to be in the same division as South Shields, Sunderland RCA and Jarrow Roofing. All down to financial irregularities, much of which are due to their massive stadium.

Yeah it was that fool George Reynolds that sucked up my football club. Happy to be away from that massive stadium

Darlo were in financial trouble before the Reynolds era after a redevelopment of Feethams that cost too much. Reynolds rescued them, but in one monumental error of judgement - a vanity project, really - saddled the club with much bigger debts. It just boggles the mind to think that they would make the same mistake twice. The idea that a big new stadium (and hardly an interesting one either) could be a springboard to the premiership is ridiculous. When you look at all the clubs that have nosedived through the divsions - chester, wrexham, luton, scarborough (R.I.P), it's always financial problems that are to blame. Maybe we'll see Blackburn added to that list in a few years :(

Matt Kilgallon takes on Chelsea's Fernando Torres

Published on Saturday 2 June 2012 09:14

LEEDS UNITED are keeping tabs on Matt Kilgallon, with the Sunderland defender’s future still uncertain despite his second coming on Wearside.

Neil Warnock was at the Stadium of Light towards the end of last season, with Kilgallon thought to be the subject of the Leeds boss’ scouting mission.

The 28-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract at Sunderland and Martin O’Neill could be open to offers for the centre-half, despite his re-emergence as a first-team player from the brink of the exit door.

Sunderland have three centre-halves on the books who have just 12 months left on their contracts and one is likely to leave the club this summer.

Kilgallon, Titus Bramble and Michael Turner are all vulnerable – with the possibility of them leaving on Bosman free transfers this time next year – and O’Neill is keen to make room in his squad for a new centre-half.
