Ranjith Abraham October 25th, 2009, 08:37 PM Asia’s fastest growing tourist destination, Kerala is also one of the most promising IT destinations in the world today. Its enviable progress has been made possible by a dedicated talent pool coupled with inn ovative and path breaking initiatives. The excellent quality of life, pro-enterprise government policies, low operational costs and attrition rates, has transformed this beautiful land into one of the most favoured IT hubs for investors.
Within the next few years Kerala is expected to attract capital investments of more than US $ 2 billion – heralding a perfect time for investors to move in and reap unlimited profits. Welcoming enterprising investors and developers for the slew of new IT projects in the state, Kerala presents a whole new world of opportunities.
Long before the time of Cleopatra, traders have been coming for the spices grown in humid climate of Malabar.Vascode Goma landed at Kappad, then there was Marcopolo, Sheikh Ibn Batuta,Abdurazzak , the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French
Once the capital of the powerful Zamorins and a prominent trade and commerce centre,Kozhikode was the most important region of Malabar in the days gone by. Today ,lush green country sides, serene beaches, historic sites, wild life sanctuaries ,rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambience make Kozhikode a popular destination.
Malabar’s potential is immense,Tourism,Agricultural and Marine exports and inward remittances which have kept Kerala Economy alive. Now the destination is the development of IT/ITES industries in the region.
Presence of large number of Engineering colleges and other technical institutions to provide easy manpower resource will be an attraction for the growth of IT/ITES industries in the region.
Cyber Park, a Government of Kerala organization planned in the lines of Technopark at Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi to build, operate and manage ITparks for the promotion and development of investment in IT and ITES industries in Malabar region of Kerala has been registered under the Societies Act 1860 on 28-01-09. Cyber Park is in the process of setting up IT parks at Kozhikode, at the SEZs approved at Kannur and Kasargode and may set up other such parks planned in future.
Ranjith Abraham October 25th, 2009, 08:43 PM The next IT destination in the state will be Kozhikode after Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The core group working towards a cyber park in Kozhikode consists of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC), Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K), National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College-Kozhikode), Kerala Builders Forum, the IT Forum of Kozhikode and the Calicut Management Association. Six high profile institutions have come up to make north Kerala the next IT hub. Kozhikode has the potential to become Kerala’s latest IT destination. The Cyberpark project is supported by the State government and so when it becomes a reality, IBS, US Technology and NeST would be the first to set up operations here. Considering other IT hubs in India, IT hub in Kozhikode would be a reliable one due to the amiable atmosphere and also expense will be much less. Lets hope the project would have a speedy take off.
Ranjith Abraham October 25th, 2009, 08:48 PM In line with its plans to develop Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi as the foremost IT locations in the region, the Kerala government has commenced work on integrated townships, specifically for IT and ITeS industry.

The new IT park and center of excellence being developed by the Government of Kerala has appointed Binu Pazhoor as CEO of Cyberpark. As Chief Operating Officer of Cyberpark, Pazhoor will lead initiatives towards the development of the ‘cyberparks’ planned to be built in the Malabar region — namely, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargode. He will be responsible for the development of infrastructure, marketing and promotion of the three parks and the development of other initiatives supporting the implementation and functions of the parks.
Pazhoor comes with experience as director in board for the Academy for Excellence, which is a non-profit organization geared towards building an education system that connects children from around the world. Commenting on his role at Cyberpark, Binu Pazhoor said, “…coming from this background, I am looking forward to this challenging task. Also being quite an environmentally conscious person, I intend to bring an eco-friendly state-of-the-art facility with all the modern amenities promoting a greener Kerala preserving the traditions and purity of the state.”

He will be responsible for the development of infrastructure, marketing and promotion of the three parks and the development of other initiatives supporting the implementation and functions of the parks.
Before joining CyberPark, Mr. Pazhoor was in USA for the last 12 years where he held the role of Director of Strategic planning at Fiserv (FSV), a major financal services firm in Houston, Texas, USA. He has also worked as a founder and CEO of a management consulting firm in the U.S.
To promote IT parks in Kerala, the government has adopted a ‘hub and spokes’ model. Two hubs — Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi — have already been developed. The third hub is Cyberpark, Kozhikode. These three hubs will cater to the respective nearby areas. Cyberpark is in the process of setting up IT parks at Kozhikode, at the SEZs approved at Kannur and Kasargode. There may also be plans to set up other such parks in the future.
Ranjith Abraham October 30th, 2009, 02:40 PM THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nearly two decades after ideating India’s first technology park concept in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala is poised to complete its
third and final hub in a proposed network of IT infrastructure, with the Cyberpark for the Malabar region.
The Cyberpark completes the trio that includes the Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and the Kochi-based Infopark that will together offer IT infrastructure to small and big players in the tech sector through a sub-network of mini parks under each of them.
The Cyberpark is projected to be a serious player in the tech sweepstakes, considering its proximity to Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore, and its promise to offer IT space at considerably lower costs.
“We believe the cost advantage is significant, and that tech sector employees would consider relocating to Kozhikode, Kannur or Kasaragod where the Cyberpark will have technology parks. An IT professional earning Rs 2 lakh per month in Bangalore may prefer to move to Kozhikode for half that pay, considering other benefits”, Cyberpark CEO Binu Pazhoor told ET.
“We are going ahead with developmental plans for parks at Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod simultaneously. The land acquisition is expected to be over by the end of the year, and construction of buildings is expected to commence latest by January 2010”, Mr Pazhoor said.
He said companies would have the option of either leasing out land at the parks and constructing their own facility, or move into ready-built infrastructure offered by Cyberpark, adding that initial interaction with tech companies in the region had indicated a keen interest among them to move into the Cyberpark facility when it was ready.
Cyberpark has a budget of Rs 10 crore for the first year, and is expected to leverage that with borrowed funds as well as attract private investment. Mr Pazhoor said a final call on the matter would be taken based on the market conditions and the clients’ requirements.
The Cyberpark facility at Kozhikode will be set up over a 43-acre campus while the parks at Kannur and Kasaragod will have an area of roughly 100 acres each.
Ranjith Abraham October 30th, 2009, 03:05 PM Cyber Park Calicut, going to be one of the three hubs, govt of Kerala going to develop in Calicut.Cyber Park will be headquarted in Calicut,an autonomous body, to control the "hub and spoke" model of development for the region of Malabar.

Ranjith Abraham December 16th, 2009, 05:02 PM KOZHIKODE: The Central government decision to confer the status of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the 27 acres that is already available for the development of a cyber park in the district has brought cheer to agencies which have been trying to establish the IT facility here.
Speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday, A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, who has been pursuing the proposal vigorously at the government-level, said the conferment of SEZ status would be a fillip to the efforts to set up the IT facility. The Kozhikode Cyber Park would need 70 acres. It has already been decided to use the 27 acres that is available with the Uralungal Labour Contractors Cooperative Society (ULCCS) for the first phase of the IT project. The SEZ status has been given to this piece of land. The ULCCS had applied for SEZ status through the State government.
The MLA pointed out that it was the first case of SEZ status being granted for IT development in North Kerala. He was confident it would now be possible to start work on IT facility on the 27 acres within two months. Meanwhile, action for acquisition of the remaining area of land needed for the 70-acre cyber park is under way. Negotiated purchase of the land is expected to start by the end of January since the rate of acquiring the land has been fina lised. Once land acquisition proceedings are completed, an application for SEZ status for that portion of the cyber park would be forwarded to the Central government thro ugh the State government, Mr. Pradeep Kumar said.

The Cyberpark being developed by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) in Kozhikode, which has been accorded special economic (SEZ) by the Board of Approvals of the Union Ministry of Commerce, will see a total investment of Rs 600 crore.
The company formed by the society, namely, UL Cyberpark, will implement the project in three phases and the first phase, expected to cost around Rs. 200 crore, will be completed within three years, according to Mr P.Ramesh, President, ULCCS.
He said that the society, floated in 1925, was probably the first of its kind in the country to take up the development of a technology park of this magnitude and also receive SEZ status.
While a part of the development cost will be borne by the society from its internal resources, the balance will be raised as loan from the banks.
The park will come up on 26 acres of land and when fully completed, it will feature more than three million square feet of built-up space. In the first phase, as much as 1.4 million square feet will be kept ready for occupation by aspiring IT companies.
The park will be developed based on green building concept and the company has already initiated steps to identify an architect for the purpose.
A total of 24 companies had responded to an expression of interest invited, of which two have been shortlisted and the final selection will be done in the coming days.
The first phase will generate direct employment for more than 2,000 people and indirect employment to as many people. It is estimated that when fully completed, the park will have an employment potential of around15,000.
The work on the first phase will begin after obtaining the environmental clearance from the Union Ministry concerned.
The Government has planned another cyberpark in the same locality over 43 acres of land. The land acquisition is progressing well and once it is completed, the project will be submitted to the Centre for SEZ approval.

Ranjith Abraham December 19th, 2009, 03:11 PM THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For over eight decades, members of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) near Vadakara in Kozhikode
district have excelled themselves in rural jobs ranging from road laying to flyover construction. The 2,000 member-strong society now feels it is time to take a plunge into – what else in these times – developing a cyber park.
The park has an investment outlay of roughly Rs 600 crore, of which Rs 200 crore will come by way of equity and the rest to be raised as debt, and the members have gone that extra mile to ensure that they have got a special economic zone status from the ministry of commerce for the project. The society has also roped in a former CEO of the Kochi-based Infopark to head the venture.
Christened the UL CyberPark, the proposed IT park will be established over 25 acres of land in Nellikode in Kozhikode district and have a total built up area of 3.1 million sq ft, and will be developed in two phases.
Says KG Girish Babu, CEO of what could be the country’s first technopark of its size in the co-operative sector: “The first phase of the park has an estimated outlay of Rs 386 crore and the equity is ready. We will finalize the debt part over the next month or so, and there are different options ahead of us for raising funds, considering that we are a co-operative venture”.
When the park is completed, it will have the infrastructure to provide direct employment to 20,000 IT/ITeS professionals.
Mr Babu says the park will also stand out for its green certification. “The Uralungal society insists that the construction should meet the latest green standards of international
levels, and it does not mind spending that extra bit on the buildings”, he says. When completed, the park is expected to be India’s first fully green-certified IT Park with the certification from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDS), an internationally recognized green building certification organization.
The master planning and building designs are expected soon and construction work will begin once the environment clearance is obtained.
ULCCS has been executing contract works for the Public Works Department, National Highways, Water Authority, Harbour Engineering and district and block gram panchayats, among others. The CyberPark the society is setting up, will be in competition to the state government-sponsored CyberPark in Kozhikode, which is also in the making. ULCCS feels the competition will just get the better out of it. For the children of the Uralungal co-operative society members, the project would provide the ideal opportunity to break away from what their parents have been doing, and enter a career in the cyber space.

Ranjith Abraham December 19th, 2009, 03:16 PM The property sector is set to boom in Kozhikode city with investments expected from the information technology (IT) industry. The hopes have increased with the Union Ministry of Commerce announcing the special economic zone (SEZ) status for a cyber park being developed by the Vadakara-based Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) at Nellikode early this week.
The UL CyberPark will be in addition to the proposed cyber park of the State government in the same area. Both these parks, aimed at attracting established and upcoming software companies across the globe, will usher in growth in Kozhikode.
The UL CyberPark will come up on 10 hectares of land, while the government cyber park will be on 17 hectares. The society has acquired the land and the acquisition of land for the government cyber park is apace. The government plans to get the SEZ status for its cyber park as well after the land acquisition process is over in January.
Ramesh Paleri, president of the ULCCS, say that the UL CyberPark is a Rs.600-crore investment project that is expected to provide employment to 20,000 people. Till now, the society had focussed only on the construction sector and it employed 2,000 people.
“Today, the young generation is not interested in taking up employment in the construction sector. Many have big dreams in the IT industry or leading a management team. That is why the cyber park idea struck us,” he says.
Initially, the ULCCS had in its possession 5.6 hectares of land when the State government offered to develop an IT centre for the city in 2007. However, the society felt that 14 acres were inadequate to meet the requirements of a cyber park. Then, the government decided to acquire land for the ULCCS, a reputable society since 1925 working on mega projects in and around Kozhikode. But the delay made the society take to other plans and started acquiring land on its own.
Mr. Paleri says that all the nine families displaced from the acquired land have been given a good package and rehabilitated. They did not want to be an impediment to an IT park project getting the SEZ status in the Malabar region. Besides, it is being developed by a cooperative society.
The cost of the cyber park will be raised from internal resources and bank loans. The total area of the buildings in the first phase of the project will be 14 lakh sq ft. The total built-up area will be 30 lakh sq ft.
The work will be started in a couple of months after securing the environmental clearance from the Centre, he says.
The park will also be the first IT space being developed on the green building concept. Modalities have been worked out for the project. “We have short-listed two architects out of the 24 applicants,” Mr. Paleri says.
More than 2,000 people will get employment directly after the completion of the first phase. The buildings are expected to be ready for occupancy within a year and a half. Leading software companies have evinced keen interest in the project. “Obviously, the UL CyberPark will face competition from the government cyber park, but it should be healthy,” he says.
According to the proposal worked out, 70 per cent of the space will be used for IT industries and the remaining for support services, including apartments and recreational activities. The companies will also get several tax benefits under the SEZ norms.
The creation of a SEZ gives unbridled opportunities for generation of additional economic activity and generation of employment. It is also expected to promote exports of services, secure foreign and domestic investments and develop infrastructure.
Kozhikode is yet to figure on the IT map of the country despite a huge number of youngsters from north Kerala working in other metros in the industry.
Software companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Sathyam, HCL Technologies and Cognizant together employ about 4.5 lakh people. These firms are recruiting more people and expanding their activities beyond the top seven IT cities in the country.
“The facilities coming up in Kozhikode should have come at least a decade ago,” Mr. Paleri says. Now, there is a glimmer of hope that Kozhikode, a tier-3 city, will evolve a road map to attract IT and ITeS companies.

An IT Corridor in the making in Kozhikode city
An information technology (IT) corridor is finally taking shape on the Malaparamba-Ramanattukara Bypass at the south-eastern tip of Kozhikode city, courtesy the two cyber parks coming up at Nellikode. An advanced technology park of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) is also coming up at Ramanattukara, on the outskirts of the city, also on the bypass stretch.
Massive development activities have already been initiated both in private and government sectors in the wake of the multi-crore IT proposals. At least 25,000 IT professionals and a large number of others in the IT-enabled-services (ITES) sector are expected to be employed in the region in the next decade.
Of the two cyber parks, one is being developed by the Vadakara-based Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) on 10 hectares of land. The Union Ministry of Commerce has granted the special economic zone (SEZ) status for this cyber park. The UL CyberPark is a Rs.600-crore investment project that is expected to provide employment to 15,000 people, says Ramesh Paleri, president of the society.
The government has initiated the process of acquiring 17 hectares of land for its cyber park near Thondayad. The total investment will be Rs.300-350 crore in the next three years.
“Once completed, the government cyber park and the UL cyber park combined will provide direct employment to 25,000 IT professionals. This means the city will have to accommodate 25,000 middle class people. Moreover, the city will have people with disposable incomes each of Rs.20,000 a month. Much of that will be spent in and around Kozhikode. That is a Rs.600-crore leisure industry to serve,” says Binu A. Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer, government cyber park.
He says the possibilities are endless; so are the investment opportunities. Every direct employment in IT means four indirect employments in other sectors. Already several builders have evinced interests in housing and villa projects in the region. An NRI has suggested a convention centre and a Chennai-based property developer a water-theme park.
The IT sector will complement the service industry. The government cyber park will also obtain the SEZ status.
Just as the trend in other cities, Kozhikode’s IT space will also be a little away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Malaparamba-Thondayad-Ramanattukkara Bypass will be a rural haven for IT professionals. But the city will then need more shopping malls, hospital beds, primary schools, play schools, high schools, finishing schools, multi-cuisine restaurants, traditional eating places, fast-food joints, coffee shops, ice cream parlours and pubs, resorts, bowling alleys, snooker pools, cyber cafes, gaming centres, health clubs, family recreation avenues and theme parks.
Thus, the roads will have more trucks, taxis, autos and air-conditioned and super-luxury buses. “We will need more school teachers, IT trainers, household help, cleaners, security personnel, Kudumbasree volunteers, chauffeurs, gardeners, plumbers,” Mr. Pazhoor says.
The city will also get the advantage of good highways connecting airports and major cities such as Bangalore, Kochi and Coimbatore. “A metro rail connecting major locations such as Head Post Office, Kallai, West Hill, Mankavu, Beach, Karaparamba, Palazhi and Medical College will be proposed,” he says.
K.N. Srikumar, spokesman of Kinfra, says that Ramanattukara town and adjoining areas will undergo a sea change with the completion of the advanced technology park. A sum of Rs.1 crore has already been allocated for acquiring land for the project.
The total investment is Rs.20 crore. The project will come up on 32 hectares of land. Initially, it was decided to acquire 80 hectares. The new plan has been prepared after avoiding the houses and paddy fields, he says.
The park will get a boost with the Centre announcing the setting up of the National Knowledge Network. This will promote knowledge sharing, resources and collaborative research among scientists, researchers and students from diverse spheres of activity.

Kozhikode, Jan. 31
The Cyberpark project in Kozhikode, which forms the centrepiece of the State Government's initiative to establish a cluster of IT parks in the Malabar area, is expected to take off by the middle of 2011.
The land acquisition process for setting up the Cyberpark, the hub of the proposed cluster, is at an advanced stage. The 43 acres of land required for the project is being acquired through a fast-track mechanism and a major portion of it is to be brought in through negotiated purchase. The Land Acquisition Act of the Government will be applied in the case of the remaining land.
Mr Binu A. Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberpark, told Business Line that the park would apply for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status after the land acquisition process was completed sometime in March this year.
The spokes of the Cyberpark are coming up in Kannur and Kasaragod. The park in Kannur, for which 27 acres of land has already been acquired, has received SEZ approval and construction work there is scheduled to be taken up this year itself.
For the Kasaragod Park, the Plantation Corporation of Kerala is transferring 100 acres of land in its possession to the IT Department. The park will also seek SEZ approval after the transfer of land is completed.
The State Government will spend around Rs 43 crore towards land acquisition for the Cyberpark in Kozhikode and another Rs 250 crore over the next four years for providing necessary infrastructure and construction of buildings. Besides, the spoke-parks in Kannur and Kasaragod are estimated to cost Rs 150 crore each, spread over a five-year period.
The Cyberpark will feature ‘warm shells', which are completely built-up space and ready for plug-and-play operations.

Ranjith Abraham March 20th, 2010, 05:42 AM Kozhikode:Binu A Pazhoor ,Chief Executive Officer, cyberpark says Kozhikode has the unique advantage as third largest city in Kerala in terms of IT investment. The city was voted as one of the best places in the country to live in. Home to a couple of premiere educational institutions in the country and a number of reputed professional colleges and schools - the key input for a knowledge based industry- Kozhikode is the best place for IT investment.
Further, low cost of infrastructure, better quality of life, connectivity to major cities within and outside the nation makes it the best strategic location to meet the ever increasing demands of the Global IT market.
On top of the strategic benefits of planning the IT parks within the state to avoid infrastructure bottleneck due to clustered growth , the even spread of Cyberparks over the northern region reassures a long term advantage in maintaining the competitive edge on cost of operations, quality of living and availability of skilled human resources.
In a recent study performed by CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) the ratings of Kozhikode against all the major cities in India, on various aspects further emphasizes the potential of the region to be the next IT/ITES tier 2 destination for a global market.
The proactive planning of the Government to setup an environment with proper infrastructure and talent pool is certainly a step in the right direction to position Kerala as a positive contributor to help the global economy sustain in an environment like this. There are a number of options for the investors to choose from, while still being able to provide cost effective services by leveraging skilled resources within the state, to provide the most innovative and out of the box solutions to the Global Industry.
Over the next 10 years, Cyberpark is expected to provide more than 25000 direct employment and more than 100000 indirect employment in the region. The direct employment will be through the firms operating from Cyberpark.
Ranjith Abraham April 12th, 2010, 03:16 PM Work to begin after environmental clearance

Master plan for one park to be ready by April 15
Five bidders in race for government cyber park
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KOZHIKODE: The coming weeks of April will witness significant developments at both the cyber parks coming up in the district.
While the draft master plan for the development of the UL CyberPark will be presented on April 15 by the Japan-based architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, a decision on the selection of the architect for the Government Cyber Park is also expected within two weeks.
The initial concept for the master plan of the UL CyberPark, coming up on a 25-acre Special Economic Zone near Nellicode, was made by the Japanese firm to the promoters, Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), and the implementing architects for the project, C.R. Narayana Rao (CRN) and RAND Associates in the last week of February.
Master plan
The master plan will address the design requirements and operational capabilities of the park, including the expected volume of vehicular traffic, layout of roads, positioning of buildings within identified plots, number of floors for individual buildings, demarcation of green spaces, three-dimensional views of the entire project, parking spaces and other infrastructure.
UL CyberPark CEO K.G. Girish Babu said the studies covered by the master plan were comprehensive enough to also include pedestrian paths, landscapes, rainwater harvesting and drainage systems, safety evacuation paths, etc.
“Anticipating traffic, the width of entry and internal roads will have to be considered in advance because the entry roads will be shared with the Government Cyberpark. To enhance use of natural lighting within buildings, a study of the average solar path over the year needs to be done and buildings laid out accordingly,” said Mr. Girish Babu, explaining how the master-planning will be crucial to how the park shapes up.
Detailed talks
The master plan will be discussed in detail and the final version will be forwarded for environmental clearance after which construction of the buildings will begin. The detailed designing of the buildings and services will be undertaken by CRN which has been the chief architect of Tidel Park, Chennai, and other prestigious projects.
With UL Cyberpark stating at the outset that it would use the concept of green buildings, the detailed design suggested by the CRN will attempt to minimise the use of water, optimise energy resources, generate less waste and consume less natural resources during construction and after commissioning.
Five firms keen
Binu Pazhoor, CEO of Government CyberPark, said that five architectural firms were in the running for winning the contract to be architects of the park coming up on 43 acres at Nellicode.
The architects who have submitted proposals are Cannon Design of Mumbai, CRN, Prashanth Associates, N.M. Salim and the Thiruvananthapuram-based Jayachandran Associates.
The government was evaluating the five proposals and a decision would be taken in a week or two, Mr. Pazhoor said.
Both the cyber parks are aiming to complete construction of their first buildings and be ready for occupation by August 2011.

Ranjith Abraham April 20th, 2010, 11:28 AM UL Cyberpark master plan to be ready by April 30
Mony K. Mathew
Kozhikode, April 18
The master plan for UL Cyberpark, being promoted by Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd (ULCCS), in Kozhikode, will be ready by April 30.
The representatives of Nikken Sekkei, the Japanese architect firm entrusted with the preparation of the master plan, had a meeting with the cyberpark officials on Friday to finalise the plan. The Chennai-based C.R. Narayanarao Architects and Engineers is also part of the process.
The park has already been accorded the status of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by the Centre and the construction of the buildings will begin after getting the environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, according to Mr Gireesh Babu, Chief Executive Officer of UL Cyberpark.
Environment clearance
He told Business Line that the environment clearance was expected to be granted by the end of May, in which case construction work in the park would commence by the end of July.
The park, spread over 25.11 acres, is being implemented in two phases at a total cost of Rs 600 crore and over a period of eight years. The first phase, costing Rs 386 crore, will be completed in four years and to begin with, two buildings will be ready for occupation by the end of next year.
The Uralungal society will contribute Rs 128 crore as equity towards the total outlay of Rs 386 crore for the first phase of the project. The balance will be raised as loans from banks and other financial institutions.
‘green building' concept
The park is planned to be developed incorporating ‘green building' concept, which will mean optimising energy efficiency, conservation of water and natural resources and adopting effective waste management systems. When fully completed, the park is projected to generate direct employment to over 20,000 people.

Ranjith Abraham May 19th, 2010, 05:44 AM Kerala etched another milestone in the IT sector by laying the foundation stone for the State’s third IT Park – Cyberpark in Kozhikode . Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan laid the foundation stone for the Cyberpark to be developed in 43 acres of land in Kozhikode.
The Chief Minister also launched the project for – UL Cyberpark being set up by a Cooperative Society labourer group Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS Ltd), which is coming up adjacent to Cyberpark
Accommodating a number of reputed educational institutions including the Indian Institute of Management, National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode has been in the radar of the IT/ITES investors for a number of years now. Further the lower cost of Infrastructure, closeness to major IT destinations like Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore puts Malabar as the next strategic location for any kind of IT/ITES developments.
While tapping into the large pool of locally available skilled resources and reputed educational institutions, the purpose of Cyber Park is to provide a friendly, cost effective and top of the line infrastructure to the IT/ITES investors, there by acting as a catalyst for the social and infrastructure development of the region with a vision to provide unlimited employment opportunities and a substantial contribution to economical development of the state especially the Malabar Region. By 2015 when the Cyberpark and UL Cyberpark is completely operational, will together provide 70,000 jobs for IT professionals and over a lakh jobs indirectly.
A refreshing aspect of Cyberpark is the ‘incubation centres’ for start-ups on the built up space of 50,000 sq.ft. The incubation centres can host 300 start ups at least and will be an ideal workspace for Calicut’s IT entrepreneurs to set up shop and begin operation at minimal operating costs.
“ India's overall software exports have slowed down on account of the global slowdown, but those from Kerala grew 43.41 percent till February-end, fetching revenue of Rs.2300 Crores. While the STPI (Software Technology Parks India) figures for the country show a growth of 17.62 percent till February-end this fiscal, software exports from Kerala have grown at 43.41 percent, with the objective of encouraging, promoting and boosting the software exports. According to the STPI figures, the Technopark and Infopark together account for 25 percent of the total exports from tier-two and tier-three cities in the country and this is good news for those IT companies looking to shift operations from the metros.” Said Dr. Ajay Kumar IAS, Principal Secretary – IT, Government of Kerala. “We envisage the investment in the state for IT in the next eight years to be around Rs. 20,000 crore.”
“ With a vision to continue the economical and infrastructural activities of the state and being able to provide the most value added solutions to help firms around the globe to be profitable and innovate, CyberPark was the next right thing to do for the Kerala IT. Cyberpark is strategically positioned to provide the benefits of the large pool of skilled resources, the lower infrastructure cost, and the high quality of living combined with its location and benefits to investors around the world. Further the number of reputed universities and educational institutions in the region has made it even more compelling to start the next IT Park in this region. One of the benefits of the park will also be women empowerment as qualified women reluctant to move out of the State for career prospects will now have sufficient options in their neighbourhood. ” He added.
Giving a report on the work progress on the parks coming up in Calicut, Cyberpark CEO Binu Pazhoor said, “From June onwards, we will accept applications for developing the IT built up space and incubation space of the park. We are also accepting applications through Public private participation as well. Over 10 companies including NeST, US Technology, FinPro Business Solution Bangalore Ltd and Leela Group among others have shown interest in starting their organizations in this IT Park. In addition job offers galore with many IT giants like IBS is also offering to set up one lakh sq.feet at the IT hub in Kozhikode, which would ensure initial employment of over 1500, which would scale up to 40,000 in future.”
“ Demand for office space in Kozhikode is expected to grow at a brisk pace. The CyberPark initiative, various infrastructure projects, general business investments coming from the NRI groups, in the background of low manpower costs, high literacy, relatively peaceful environment, competitive power tariff structure for the industry, and easy availability of talent pool, low attrition rates, low to moderate real estate costs, inexpensive cost of living etc. are expected to attract more IT/ITES companies and other knowledge based industries to Kozhikode in the next 3 – 5 years.” He added.

The proposed Cyberpark campus at Kozhikode is designed to promote outdoor activities and a healthy lifestyle. The scenic 43 acres of land at Nellikode is located just 5 km from Kozhikode city and 21 km from the international airport at Karipur.
Designed by N.M. Salim and Associates, the project features buildings that blend well with the hilly terrain. The master plan follows a linear layout which follows the existing contours to minimise cutting and to retain the ground conditions. The buildings are designed to make maximum use of daylight and natural ventilation.
Glazed walls dominate the north and south façade, with balconies on the east and west sides. A pedestrian pathway, open to the sky, will connect the buildings. To reduce the impact on the environment further, the roof of each building will be provided with vegetation wherever possible.
The project will follow scientific methods in solid-waste management, rainwater harvesting, energy conservation and wastewater recycling. Other eco-friendly features include energy saving devices and use of solar energy.
Cyberpark is the first IT park being developed by the Department of IT in the Malabar region under the hub-and-spoke model. While the government will develop 43 acres of land as the hub in Kozhikode, another 25 acres are to be developed by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. The spoke IT parks will be set up in Kannur and Kasaragod.
Binu Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberpark, said the first phase of the project covering 4 lakh sq.ft of built-up space would be ready for commercial launch by mid-2011. As many as 2,000 job opportunities will be generated in the first phase, he said.
The master plan proposes the construction of seven buildings, together providing 3 million sq.ft of office space, to accommodate 30,000 employees by the time the project is completed in 2015.
The Cyberpark project features a host of facilities such as restaurants, health clubs, a swimming pool, banks, health-care units and expansive landscaped grounds. The plan envisages the construction of artificial waterbodies to store the harvested rainwater. Apartments and executive villas are other highlights.
“Kozhikode is already on the radar of a number of major IT investors from around the world. The rich pool of talents, the higher quality of living and the lower cost of operation make it an attractive tier-2 destination for IT/ITES investment. The Cyberpark project will leverage on these advantages to offer a good working environment for investors,” Mr. Pazhoor said.
An in-campus day-care and early child family education (ECFE) programme for families with pre-kindergarten children is a unique proposal to be taken up under the project. “ECFE is designed to strengthen families. It is based on the idea that the family provides a child's first and most significant learning environment and parents are a child's first and most important teachers.
The goal is to enhance the ability of all parents to provide the best possible environment for their child's learning and growth,” Mr. Pazhoor says.

Ranjith Abraham August 19th, 2010, 06:36 PM Draft master plan for Kozhikode Cyberpark approved
Mony K. Mathew
Kozhikode, Aug. 18
The draft of the master plan for the Cyberpark, being developed by IT Kerala in Kozhikode, has been approved by the board of directors and the final plan is expected to be ready by this month-end.
The Kozhikode Cyberpark, which will form the hub of an IT cluster in Malabar region with spokes in Kasargod and Kannur, is the third major IT park coming up in the State after the Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi.
It has already obtained the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) approval from the Centre.
Of the 43 acres required for the park, 30 acres have already been acquired through a fast-track mechanism with a major portion of it through negotiated purchase. The remaining 13 acres, for which the Land Acquisition Act is being applied, is in the process of being taken into possession.
According to Mr Binu A. Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer of the project, the design of the Common Facilities Centre has been finalised. The building is to be constructed using pre-engineered structure and is expected to be completed by early next year.
This will house the Cyberpark administrative and marketing office and will also have space for banks, restaurants and two or three incubation facilities.
The design of the first IT building, with a total built-up are of 1.5 lakh sq.ft., is in the final stage and the tender for its construction will be floated within the next few days.
The whole project, being developed as eco-friendly and aimed at achieving Gold LEED rating, will have a total built-up space of three million sq.ft. when completed, as projected now, in 2015.
The spoke-park in Kasargod is coming up on 100 acres belonging to the Plantation Corporation of Kerala, which is in the process of being transferred to IT Department. The park in Kannur, for which land acquisition is underway, has already received SEZ status.
Mr Binu said that the contour survey of the sites of both the parks had been completed and cost estimates of initial infrastructure such as boundary walls and security gates were under preparation.

Kozhikode: As a major step towards making the much-awaited Cyber Park in Nellikode here a reality, the authorities have finalised plans to invite tenders for construction of the first building for the IT project.
The tenders for construction would be invited immediately after the Onam holidays, Binu Pazhoor, CEO of the Cyber Park, said on Friday. The building, to be known as common facility centre, would house the marketing office of the Cyber Park apart from common utilities like conference halls, incubation centres, banks, post offices, ATMs, cafeteria etc.
Mr. Binu described the design for the facility as one that had a distinctive postmodern style of architecture seen only in foreign countries.
“It is known commonly as the deconstructive concept, which is not very common in our country”, architect N. M. Salim said. The new office building was designed to generate a new corporate identity, he added. It would have a built up area of 1000 square metres (10,000 sq. feet) with two floors. A new concept of building technology known as ‘pre-engineered structures' was being adopted for the construction of this building, a Cyber Park press release said.
The beams, columns and slabs of the structure would be made to order at factories and brought to site where the entire shell would be assembled.
The common facilities centre was expected to be completed within three to four months of the award of the work to the contractor through open advertisement in newspapers. Tender documents would also be available at the Cyber Park office in Kozhikode.

Aslesh January 9th, 2011, 06:00 PM Any progress update on cyberpark?
Ranjith Abraham January 16th, 2011, 04:53 AM By Binu Pazhoor, CEO, Cyberpark
2010 - in Review
In 2010, Cyberpark received Rs. 17.5 Crores as funding from the government, which represents a considerable increase from the Rs. 10 Crores received in 2009. The largest portion of this fund will be used to setup infrastructure within in the park such as 6 Lane access road, dedicated electrical substation, Rain water harvesting, waste water treatment and recycling, sewage treatment etc. Up to the end of 2010, Cyberpark has been focusing on completing the land acquisition, finalizing the master plan for the park, finalizing the design of the initial buildings etc.
Among the years notable developments are the approval of SEZ for the 25 acres of land, acquisition of 31 acres of land from a total of 43 acres, attaining Single Window Clearance etc. Currently 92 % of the land needed for the park has been acquired and the balance land is expected to be ready by Feb, 2011.
A base for business to grow
The contribution from the lease of land is expected to be over Rs. 100 Crores in 2011. In terms of office space, Cyberpark will have close to 3 m sq ft of finished space available for investors which will be a 100% growth from 2010. Cyberpark is expecting to have a total floor area of 200,000 sq ft by the end of 2011. The next four years are expected to see another 2 million sq ft of office space come on stream.
Among the new enterprise buildings that will be coming up in Cyberpark in 2011 are the Common Facilities Centre and the IT Building which will add 10,000 sq ft and 170,000 sq ft of office space respectively. The common facility centre is nearing the initiation of construction activities, while the work for the IT Building will be starting by March 2011. While the common facility centre is scheduled to be fully ready by June 2011, the IT Building will be ready by late 2011, early 2012. The centres aim to enable more local technology start-ups to benefit from the resources, networking and support offered by Cyberpark, through its Resource Support and service centre while enjoying affordable rents in a conducive and comprehensive business cluster.
Tenants of the first IT Building are expected to be able to move in by late 2011 and will be offered the flexibility to design their own customized space and layouts to suit their business needs. Besides providing office space for SME’s, Cyberpark will play host to major players including global multinationals, who will be able to setup regional operations for global communications, outsourcing, data management, and technology development.
Other innovative enterprise developments are expected to emerge from Cyberpark, which will include Residential buildings, commercial buildings, recreational and hospitality services which will offer around 200,000 sq ft of finished space.
A thriving township
As Kozhikode is maturing as the nation’s premier information technology hub, Cyberpark is taking proactive approach in attracting major developers to make the city the next major destination to live, work, study and retire. With easy access to Bangalore, Kochi, Mangalore, Mysore and its environs, a thriving commercial, business and IT scene, as well as a comprehensive community calendar and amenities, Cyberpark is projecting 30,000 permanent residents by 2014.
Between 2011 and 2014, several developers will build a number of units of various property types in Kozhikode. This will include apartments, landed properties, small office home offices, schools, hospitals, shopping malls and town houses.
Hilite is developing high rise apartment buildings, 2 storey bungalows, retail stores, shopping malls etc. This will include hilite hills, metromax and spring dale, a township of super link houses, town houses and town villas. Some of the completed projects by hilite include hilite cliff dale, hilite manor, hililte park view, hilite harmony and Focus mall. Other key players include Alhind, Landmark etc.
In terms of commercial development in Kozhikode, the shop offices and residential units and service apartments are also experiencing good demand. The Kalyan Silks, Jayalakshmy Silks that opened its door in 2010 is yet another sign of growing demand from the city.
Aggressive Future growth
The attraction of Kozhikode has been growing, especially among the residential and commercial developers seeking opportunities in the greater Kozhikode area. With more than Rs. 2000 Crores of investment projected for 2011 to 2014 via the development of enterprise, commercial, institutional and residential developments, the cumulative investment projected by Kozhikode since 2008 is projected to reach Rs. 10,000 Crores by 2014.
The majority of the developments outside Cyberpark will be in residential developments which will be followed by enterprise, commercial and institutional investments, and a solid indicator that Kozhikode has already started its major page of aggressive growth.
A thriving community
Kozhikode’s reputation as a knowledge centre and learning destination is supported by the presence of tertiary educational institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National Institute of Technology (NIT), College of Engineering etc. Mean while the international school Sadhbhavana, which was opened in 2010 will cater for pupils aged 4 to 14.
There are currently over 70 restaurants serving local and international cuisine to the diverse community in Kozhikode, with Paragon, Taj Gateway, Kadavu Resort, Hyson Heritage, seven seas, Dominos, Chik King Square the current favourites among the residential, business and student population.
As further development take shape, the growing population of Cyberpark will fully enjoy Kozhikode as a place to live, study, work and play with the availability of more amenities that befits the international community.
Developing Human Capital
True to its focus on developing the State’s ICT, multimedia and innovation industries, Kozhikode is home to a number of skilled resources which includes an even spread of professional, technical, non technical population. Cyberpark will play a key role in nurturing ICT capability and entrepreneurship among the next generation of Kerala’s ICT talents in collaboration with the major players in the industry.
Knowledge and technology based employers in Cyberpark can send their staff to IIITM, Trivandrum, which will be the Nation’s premiere centre for Post graduate ICT training besides being a venue for seminars and educational activities for working professionals.
In collaboration with School of Business NIT, and IIM, Cyberpark will also hold a “hand holding” service to SME’s in its Resource Support Service Centre which will add value to its SME Technopreneur Centre cluster.
Local graduates from Kozhikode and neighbouring areas will also benefit from Cyberpark’s Graduate Attachment and Training (CGREAT) program, which will help to attract, develop and retain talents as part of the state’s effort to intensify human capital development. Interns will be trained in soft skills, given on the job training and even receive placements from companies operating from the park.
Further the “Talent Pool Database” hosted by the Kerala IT will also serve as a platform for skilled resources and fresh graduate to connect with potential employers from the state and vice versa.
Innovative local platform from global audience
The government has called for collaboration between the public and private sectors to propel the State forward into a high income and developed economy through key strategies such as developing the ICT and creative content industries. In line with the government aspirations, that Kerala IT has created a platform called “Networking with Kerala”, an online portal that will enable service providers from the state to publish their capabilities, to the international community.
This innovative new platform aims to connect the service providers operating from the state to the clients and investors around the globe, thus enabling the growth of local companies while maintaining its marketing and advertising expenses.
Besides being the first IT park in the region, Cyberpark is focused on thinking outside the box and creating an environment for an innovative growth, as Kozhikode has on its doorstep a pool of young talented resources ready to develop and showcase their creativity via Cyberpark.
Supporting the nation’s economic growth
Cyberpark’s vision closely echoes the four major thrusts identified by the national economic advisory council, which is talent development, the creation of research and development eco system, provision of growth infrastructure and institutional development.
Through Kozhikode’s efforts, Cyberpark is practically a microcosm of these aspirations as we nurture entrepreneurship through its holistic ecosystem of multinational corporations and Cyberpark nurtured local knowledge based SME’s, providing a globally competitive ICT infrastructure within a sustainable and liveable cyber city which also functions as a one-stop centre for innovation and creativity in products and services.

Work to be complete by middle of next year
Kozhikode: Major IT companies such as CTS, UST and IBS have evinced interest in setting up shop at Cyberpark that is coming up in Nellicode, here, the IT park's top officials said here on Wednesday. Cyberpark, being promoted by the State government's IT Department, is expected to be ready by the middle of next year to welcome its first batch of tenants.
Binu A. Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberpark, said, Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd. (KSITIL), which is developing the park, had completed acquisition of more than 40 acres of land. The remaining, a little over two acres , would be taken over shortly. The construction work of the Common Facility Centre would begin as soon as land acquisition is completed.
The price bids from pre-qualified contractors had been invited for the construction of the first IT building, which is expected to be commissioned by the middle of next year. Also, the leasing of land for co-developers would start by April 2012, he said.
Besides facilities for IT majors, the park will also provide office space for small and medium enterprises. They will be free to design their own layouts in the IT building to suit their needs.
Also, the park is planning to offer a ‘hand holding' service to small and medium enterprises at its Resource Support Service Centre in association with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
The Cyberpark would be designed in such a way as to play a critical role in promoting Information Communication Techonology (ICT) capabilities and entrepreneurship.
Graduates from Kozhikode and the neighbouring areas are also expected to benefit from the Cyberpark's Graduate Attachment and Training Programme, which is designed to develop and strengthen the State's efforts to intensify human capital development activities. The interns would be trained in soft skills, given on-the-job training and even helped to obtain placements in the companies operating from the park, he said.

Ranjith Abraham March 17th, 2011, 02:00 PM Kozhikode, March 16: The Cyberpark being promoted by the IT Department of the State Government here, which is expected to be ready by the middle of next year to let in the first batch of tenants, has already attracted the attention of major companies in the IT field.
According to Cyberpark officials, companies like CTS, UST Global and IBS have expressed interest in setting up their units in the park.
The Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd. (KSITIL), which is developing the park, has completed acquisition of more than 40 acres of land and the remaining little over two acres of land will be taken possession of shortly. The construction work of the Common Facility Centre would begin soon after, Mr Binu A. Pazhoor, Chief Executive Officer of the Cyberpark, said.
The price bids from pre-qualified contractors have been invited for the construction of the first IT building, which is expected to be commissioned by the middle of next year. Also, the leasing of land for co-developers would start by April 2012, he said.
Space for SMEs
Apart from major players, the park will provide office space for small and medium enterprises and they will be offered the flexibility to design their own customised layouts in the IT building to suit their business needs.
Also, the park is planning to offer a ‘hand holding' service to small and medium enterprises at its Resource Support Service Centre in association with the National Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management here.
Mr Binu said that the Cyberpark, which is conceived on the lines of Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark in Kochi, would play a key role in nurturing ICT capabilities and entrepreneurship among the next generation of Kerala's youth in collaboration with major players in the industry.
The local graduates from Kozhikode and the neighbouring areas will benefit from the Cyberpark's Graduate Attachment and Training Programme, which is designed to develop and retain talents as part of the State's efforts to intensify human capital development activities.

Ranjith Abraham May 15th, 2011, 03:19 PM Kozhikode is on the threshold of major IT development with cyber parks and a knowledge park coming up. The realty sector is changing accordingly.
http://i56.************/33w733r.jpg
The realty sector is riding on a new wave of growth in Kozhikode with work on two cyber parks in the south-eastern tip of the city and a knowledge park in the suburbs going apace.
Property developers are reworking their strategies for development along the Malaparamba-Ramanattukara bypass, the location of the mega information technology (IT) projects.
One of the cyber parks is being developed by the Vadakara-based Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) on 10 hectares of land. The Union Ministry of Commerce has granted the special economic zone (SEZ) status to the Rs.600-crore UL CyberPark. Another is the government-sector cyber park coming up on 28 hectares of land at Nellikode and Pantheerankavu villages. It has also received the SEZ status.
One of the first residential projects to be commissioned now is from the stables of ‘HiLITE' Builders, ‘HiLITE' Metromax, on the Thondayad bypass. “It combines craftsmanship and quality along with never-before amenities. This trendsetting project is sure to change the landscape of Kozhikode,” P. Sulaiman, managing director of the building company, says.
Metromax is one of the biggest residential projects in north Kerala, with a built-up space of 5 lakh sq.ft and a common amenities area of 50,000 sq.ft. The 272 customised apartments have novel features such as a special department to take care of cleaning, laundry, and waste management. The facilities include a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, a party hall, a children's play area, a yoga centre and a jogging track on the first floor.
Sauna and Jacuzzi, proximity-sensor card entry and an amphitheatre with 150 seats are among the features. A health club, a food plaza, a general store, a courier desk, salons, a library, a home theatre, a conference room, and provision for Ayurvedic treatment means the added advantage of having all necessities under a common roof, Mr. Sulaiman says.
A facility management office, a conference room, a recreation room (provision for indoor games such as billiards and chess), a Wi-Fi zone, and a tuition centre are among the amenities. The car park can accommodate 400 cars. There are a drivers' room and four fully furnished guest suites.
The company is building a new township, ‘HiLITE Hills,' on the Thondayad bypass, with commercial space, luxury apartments, and a mall.
Property developers say that more companies are vying for space on the IT corridor to construct apartments. Homes will be needed when 25,000 IT professionals and a large number of people in the information-technology Enabled Services (ITES) will be employed in the region in the next five to seven years.
Already 40 IT companies are operating in and around the city. The KINFRA Park at Kakkancherry has accommodated 16 companies. The IT sector is expected to complement the service industry. This will further generate employment in various sectors. For every one direct employment in IT means four indirect employments in other sectors.

coolclt May 24th, 2011, 07:37 AM Kozhikode: The work for the main building of Cyber Park here will begin in July, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Binu Pazhoor said here on Tuesday. Speaking at the Collectorate here after drawing lots to finalise the plots offered to those who had to move out from the proposed Cyber Park site at Nellikkode in the city, Mr. Binu said the work for another building at the park (of 10,000 sq ft), which was started earlier, would be completed in four months. District Collector P.B. Salim was also present on the occasion.
New plots
As many as 23 persons, who had given away their land for the park, had been offered five cents of land each between Chevayur and Kovur in the city for building houses.
According to Mr. Binu, authorities would make road, water, and power available to these plots.
“Help of Nirmithi Kendra will also be made available for constructing the houses of those with financial difficulties,” he said.
The CEO also agreed to consider the demand from the landowners to provide them with a common plan for their houses besides setting up a common well for them. The registration process of the distributed land would be completed within a month, he said.

navjot July 18th, 2011, 09:12 AM Kozhikode Cyberpark to function in about a year
Two buildings to be constructed at a cost of Rs.70 crore
The information technology potential of Malabar is all set to get a fillip with the work on the first IT building of Cyberpark, Kozhikode, soon to be launched.
“We have entrusted the work with the Hyderabad-based Krr Infrastructure Private Limited and it is expected to mobilise the work in ten days,” Cyberpark Chief Executive Officer Binu Pazhoor told The Hindu on Wednesday. “The company is expected to complete the work within 14 months,” he said.
Since the building has been designed in two sections, it can be opened for operations as soon one section is completed. So, it is likely that the park may begin operations even before the 14-month period, Mr. Pazhoor said. When completed, it will have a built-up space of 1.70 lakh sq.ft generating about 1,700 jobs.
Meanwhile, construction of a 10,000 sq ft-building which will house the office of Cyberpark is likely to be completed in a couple of months. “About Rs.70 crore will be spent on these two buildings during the 2011-12 financial year,” Mr. Pazhoor said.
Employment creation
The idea is to have a built-up space of 3 million sq.ft in another four to five years generating about 70,000 direct jobs and another one lakh jobs indirectly.
Estimate for the main access road and bridges for connectivity has been approved by the board of Cyberpark and tenders will be invited towards the end of this month.
The Board of Approval under the Union Ministry of Commerce has already notified 25 of the 43 acres of Cyberpark as Special Economic Zone for developing IT/ITES infrastructure.
“Add to that the SEZ approval received for 25 acres of UL Cyberpark, developed by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society, and Kozhikode already has 50 acres of SEZ space for IT development,” Mr. Pazhoor said.
He said the proposed spokes of Cyberpark in Kannur and Kasargod could be focussed on only after the hub was fully developed and made operational. He said Kozhikode was fast turning out to be a sought after destination among start-ups and small and medium enterprises.
Research facilities
“With the presence of the Indian Institute of Management and the National Institute of Technology, companies are keen to start operations here as they saw a possibility for collaboration with these premier institutes utilising their research and development facilities,” Mr. Pazhoor said.
With the IT industry yet to flourish in Kozhikode, most of the professionals from here at present work in cities such as Kochi or Bangalore. “Development of IT parks here will therefore enable a large talent pool to work closer to their homes thus bringing down the operational cost of companies,” he said.

Checkout previous posts. This is just first building which will accommodate 3 companies. Second building which will be bigger will come by next year. Rest of the buildings in the pic you saw will come one by one. Havent heard of any land acquisition problem yet. I believe both cyberparks have acquired most of the land and has SEZ status already!. Irshad November 4th, 2011, 12:54 AM The ‘Quick Space' building of UL Cyberpark, which offers incubation facilities for aspiring companies, will be ready by the first week of next month.
All the 164 seats at the 10,000 sq ft building in the domestic tariff area of the park have already been booked, according to Mr T.K. Kishor Kumar, Manager, Administration.
The cyberpark, being established by Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), is coming up on 25.11 acres and the first Software Development Building (SDB) within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) area of the park, the work on which is fast progressing, is expected to be completed in December next year.
Mr Kumar said that many companies, including some IT majors, had expressed interest in setting up units in the first SDB, which will have a built-up area of 5.08 lakh sq ft and is estimated to cost Rs 90 crore. The park is being developed in two phases to cover a total built-up area of 32 lakh sq ft over the next eight years at an outlay of Rs 600 crore. The first phase of 14 lakh sq ft is slated to be completed in three years.
The master plan of the park has been prepared by Nikken Sekkei of Japan and all the buildings have been so planned as to comply with the parameters of ‘green' certification. When fully operational, the park is expected to provide direct employment to 20,000 people and indirect job opportunities to 80,000 others.
The cyberpark will have all self-contained facilities required for modern living. There will be service apartments to take care of immediate settlement of critical staff for short and medium-term and a variety of recreational avenues and eco parks will add to the facilities. The campus will also have banks, ATMs, food courts and food kiosks.
According to preliminary projections, the value of exports from the park will be to the tune of Rs 144 crore in three years, which is expected to touch Rs 1,500 crore by the 10th year.

How many renders have we seen???? Which one is real?
dinakar January 11th, 2012, 05:47 AM How many renders have we seen???? Which one is real?
there is no changes in renders for UL park from day 1, they are going ahead with the same plans, this render just shows one building that is going to be constructed first....
psanthosh January 16th, 2012, 04:08 AM Kozhikode, Jan. 15: The ‘Quick Space' building at the upcoming UL CyberPark, being developed by Uralungul Labour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd (ULCCS), will be inaugurated on January 20.
The building, offering fully furnished plug-and-play space, will be available for start-up initiatives facilitating low initial investment cost and speedy start of operations. The modules in the building, where an entrepreneur will be able to commence operations within an hour, will be released on a first-come-first-served basis, according to Mr P. Ramesan, President, ULCCS.
The CyberPark, which has already received Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status, will come up on 25.11 acres of land at an estimated total outlay of Rs 600 crore. It is planned to be implemented in two phases with a total built-up area of 3.1 million square feet, out of which, 2.15 million sq.ft. will be for IT and ITES companies.
The foundation stone for the 14-lakh sq.ft. software development building in the first phase will also be laid on January 20. The building is slated to be completed by the end of 2010. With the completion of the second phase also, as many as 20,000 people are projected to get direct employment in the park, apart from indirect employment opportunities for another 80,000 people.
The master plan of the park has been done by Nikken Sekkei of Japan, which has been involved in over 20,000 projects in 40 countries around the world. The buildings are designed by CRN, a leading architect in India. The ‘green' IT buildings will be LEED certified for Gold Standards.
The park will feature multi-purpose meeting hall and training rooms, food court, travel and tourism counters, courier and service centres, banks, ATMs and convenience shops.
There will also be service and residential apartments, recreation facilities, including multiplexes and gaming areas, warehouse facility for hardware storage and e-waste disposal and healthcare centres.
Mr Ramesan said at press meet, where the Minister for Panchayats and Social Welfare, Dr. M.K. Muneer, who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee, and Mr A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, were also present, said the CyberPark would account for exports of Rs 1,500 crore through software development and outsourcing activities over a period of ten years.
Within the first three years after commencement of operations, the exports would amount to Rs 144 crore, he said quoting studies carried out by the society.

Irshad January 20th, 2012, 10:42 PM UL CyberPark, a project of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) Kozhikode's first IT Park has been award the Special Economic Zone status by the Board of Approvals of the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. UL CyberPark is Malabar region's first Special Economic Zone. The UL CyberPark will be set up in 25.11 acres of land in Nellikode in Kozhikode district and have a total built up area of 3.1 million sq.ft. The planned project will be developed in two phases. The construction of first phase began on 24th June, 2011 and is expected to be operational by December 2012, will have a total built up area of 14 lakh sq.ft The second phase will be developed subsequently. When both the phases are completed, it can provide direct employment to 20,000 IT/ITeS professionals and indirect employment to 80,000 others. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.600 crores.
The launching ceremony of the project was done by Former Chief Minister Sri.V.S Achuthanandan. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Software Development Building-1 will be done by Honourable Chief Minister Sri. Oommen Chandy today.
M/s Nikken Sekkei of Japan has been appointed for Master Planning and M/s CRN will undertake the building architecture and services. All IT buildings are expected to be Green certified which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, uses renewable materials, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants when compared to a conventional building. CyberPark will stand out in terms of quality standards, both in facility and in service.
UL CyberPark is committed to support infrastructure incubation to deserving start up companies in IT. Fully furnished space will be offered to start-up initiatives so that the companies can keep their initial investment low and can start their operations without wasting time. UL CyberPark has already completed the construction of a building with all facilities like fitouts, furniture, fixtures, fittings, air-conditioning outlets etc. enabling entrepreneur to start an IT business within an hour. This building named QuickSpace will be inaugurated on 20th January 2012.
Impact on Local Economy
During the project stage, a huge segment of construction workers get the benefit of salary and wages, more than 80% of which is usually spent in the local economy.During the operational phase, in the account of salary itself, there will be an inflow of Rs. 250 to 300 crores per year when the direct employment becomes close to 10,000 which can happen by the year 5. About 25% of this amount can also get disbursed to the indirect job part for maintenance and other services described above.
Such a development has been clearly witnessed in Kochi when the Infopark came up. There the opportunity development for residential apartments and other services (hotels, taxi services, shopping malls, automobile sales, service etc) have created a massive flow of money to the local economy. Deposits in the local banks have gone up. High profile shopping malls and hotels have come up. The living style of people has changed. Even the tourist destinations in and around have started flourishing. Same scale and style of development can happen in Kozhikode. The city will go through a complete transformation.
Regional Development
Apart from already identified tourist destinations like Wynad, more fresh destinations will be identified by the IT folks and there will be opportunities emerging for development of these destinations. In short, the establishment of UL Cyberpark in Kozhikode will trigger a growth in various fronts of economy in the Malabar region.
Facilities planned in the UL CyberPark
UL Cyberpark will have self-contained facilities required for modern days living. Eco friendly buildings with energy efficient layouts and interiors. Fully furnished incubators to support start-up SME initiatives. Service Apartments will take care of immediate settlement of critical staff for short and medium term. Wide driveways and well designed walkways, which will make the whole campus friendly. Residential facilities will be available as Apartments, though in limited number. A variety of recreation facilities and adequate eco parks will be built. Banks, ATMs, Food courts and food kiosks are planned in the campus. Essential warehouse facilities will be there for hardware storage. Waste collection and disposal systems will be scientifically implemented. Reprography centers and Internet centers, are planned. Emergency management systems including Ambulance will be provided. Commercial complex will provide supermarkets and branded sales outlets. Multiplexes and gaming areas are planned for entertainment. Healthcare, gym, pharmacy and related services. Utility services like travel/tourism counters, courier and post office will be there. Rainwater harvesting, and in-house water purification plant will ensure uninterrupted water supply. The whole facility will be backed up 100% in terms of electricity.
More Facilities in Education and R&D
When IT and related technologies develop, the education institutions will also go through a matching transformation. The curriculum can get tuned to the requirement of the technology. The Universities will be tempted to offer courses that will match the job demands. More finishing schools will come. Distance education will also become more common. Thus the opportunities are endless. All these developments can happen without creating any pollution. The UL CyberPark is being set up based on environment friendly philosophies. Green certified buildings (which uses more local, recyclable materials and which consumes relatively less energy, and are more human friendly) are planned.

That is great! Kozhikkode thanne alle? Kannurile pattikkadu IT park allallo?
sudheeshnairs February 2nd, 2012, 03:55 PM ^^It is ULCS Cyber park, Calicut. The person who called me used the term ‘North Kerala’ and she was speaking as if I may not be knowing about the things happening there and was surprised when I asked Calicut or Kannur.
Sadly I cannot relocate out of Bangalore now. It is indeed a matter of pride to be considered for such top posts, but other domestic factors are also there. Last time when NASSCOM office was about to be opened in TVM, I was also asked by one of the known people whether I would be interested. The issue is that I don’t want my wife to quit her present nice career (better than mine, in comfort wise & monetary wise) in Bangalore. When compared with her present organisation, the only good option which in Kerala is with 'Oracle' only. Even then the work profile also may not match. And she also says is that we should live/work for some time outside India also (mostly Germany), before relocating back home.
And yes, I look forward to a Calicut Trip and having a thread in Showcase gallery. The last time I was there was during 2001-02 to attend some expo at ‘Arayidathu palam,’ when I was with KINFRA. Those days I was not in to clicking pictures on the go nor was having even a mobile, so no pictures. Before that I had come twice also, first to REC for an interview and secondly in 2000 during a driving trip to Wayanad with my friend from Kochi. The Skyline of Calicut has changed much from those days (as seen in the pics here in SSC).

dinakar February 6th, 2012, 08:03 PM IT cos make a beeline to UL Cyber Park
KOZHIKODE: The first group of companies in the UL Cyber Park is all set to start functioning by the end of February. The Cyber Park will ink agreements with three companies in the coming week to allot space in the incubation centre Quick Space, which was inaugurated recently.
The companies include Bangalore-based Canadian Technologies, Kozhikode-based Posics Technologies and Dubai-based E-dot Technologies. Discussions are on with another Bangalore-based software company too. The four-storied incubation centre has a seating capacity of 170 seats.
The city's IT expectations received a shot in the arm when Infosys executive co-chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan agreed to take up the mentoring role of the industry here. "The visit by Kris is expected to help in building confidence among the companies who are considering smaller cities like Kozhikode, where the cost of living is low," said A Pradeep Kumar, MLA. "The city's proximity to tourist destinations, including Wayanad, is an added advantage. If opportunities are available in the city, Malayalis who work in other cities are most likely to return," he said.
"Several leading Indian and multinational companies (MNCs) are approaching us for space in the park," said P Rameshan, chairman and managing director, UL Cyber Park. However, the park would go to the market only after finishing the work of the ground floor of the software development building, which is likely be completed by March end.
During his recent visit to the city, chief minister Oommen Chandy had assured that the work of the incubation centre for start-up firms will be completed by June. He had said that construction of the approach road to the Cyber Park will start in March.

Im afraid that calicut will have presence with MNCs . Considering Smart city , and other info parks are coming in kochin in another 5 years , calicut holds little chances to invite huge companies. No one will prefer to have their presence in both these places too . Cost of living in calicut or kochin will remain the same and Kochin surely has more talent poool

it took ages for MNC's to start looking at TVM eventhough it had technopark since early 90's , it will take time man.

agnath. February 28th, 2012, 02:49 PM As far I see it , calicut has enough city infrastructure for software companies but it lacks quality office space , which should get addressed by cyberpark. If we have quality space Indian software biggies would be ready to invest in Calicut, Moreover calicut has world class institutes in NIT & IIM, proximity to them can bringin good software startups as well, given the cost advantages.

Yes, considering the distance between Calicut and Trivandrum you are right, latheesh was infact pointing into this, being from Kannur, for him Calicut and Kochi are more close and there are a major chunk of techies who thinks the same from Kozhikode and Kannur districts working in Bangalore.

well.....I think MNCs and IT companies and such are started according to "THEIR CHOICE" and NOT "OUR CONVENIENCE".

So, I am happy:)

Accessibility to bangalore is tough after the travel ban by Karnataka. Any time Trivandrum now a days is nearer than bangalore. Moreover Bangalore has
become so congested now. Its really the quality of work and oppurtunity of growth that drives people to Bangalore. The luxury of having fishfry and rice for lunch without burning a hole in pocket is possible only in Kerala. Just this convenience of travelling to hometown and having food of one'x choice is what many Mallus lack in Bangalore.
Irshad February 28th, 2012, 08:44 PM Those who have any doubts about whether any MNCs will start functioning from Calicut soon..PLS WAIT AND SEE.....I HAVE NO DOUBTS

Sali, I liked the rice & fish fry part. We all think alike. Food is a major problem and what we get mostly is the veg food in,ka/ tn style which is not suited to our palette.
I have heard that Travel is becoming a nightmare these days due to travel restrictions(there was an article in mathrubhumi varantha pathippu about the bad treatment by forest & police at border)
Another thing is taking/riding an outstation vehicle, esp a two wheeler which turns out to be a good source of revenue for the cops.
Life is good here if you earn well and get insulated from everything. Quality of life for general public is much lower.
And whatever said, on a grass route level, an outside state guy is always an outsider.

If you can plan your journey in advance travelling to Trivandrum is much easier than Bangalore or Kochi. Especially from Kannur we have three trains now. Just get into your train in the evening, sleep well and wake up in the morning at your destination. You don't feel tired after a train journey and rates are cheap too. :)

Hospitality, Retail ,Healthcare and Realty are equally important and the city is witnessing tremendous growth on these sectors
2021 Census ,there are chances Calicut might become a 3M UA :)

It is true that Malabar districts does not have as many engineering colleges as South. But many from malabar districts study across engineering colleges in Kerala.Another thing, students from Malabar has got the easy accessible locations like Mysore,Mangalore,Coimbatore,Shimoga,Hassan and those places got very good reputed engineering colleges. If you take all these parameters in to consideration, talent pool won't be a problem.
But the thing, we have to watch is that, how long would it take for Calicut to be a matured location for IT/ITES.
Malayaali February 29th, 2012, 02:06 PM ^^
Calicut has the life and vibe for an IT city. More over, presence of IIM and NIT is a big advantage that will definitely considered by IT Co's.

Come on, how can we expect to have majority of students from Malabar when we have equally talented and competitive south and central Kerala and as a matter of fact whole of India looking for seats in NIT-C which is one of the best in India, still there are a fair share of Calicutites in NIT. And talking about talent pool, Calicut is centrally located city which have very good options nearby, so students from Calicut need not stick back in the district for their education.

arunjith February 29th, 2012, 03:14 PM thats where im still wondering . I am an alumini of NITC , considering the share of people studied there in those times I still wonder how many will opt for calicut as an option . Moreover Trichy has NIT , surathkal too has , those cities dont see much an IT growth based on this technical school alone . Nishi Ranjan who was an Ex crec ite had a special interst for calicut , thats how Arbitron opened an incubation centre there . Had we have such people in the industry more and more , then we can expect more growth there.

Sanju, I am an alumni of NITC, and I did my engg there @ 97-2001, that time it was like 50% of the NITC seats were for Keralites and 50% for non-Keralites. back then number of the north kerala students in campus was substantial, actually I feel we had more students from north Kerala compared to south and central Kerala in our batch. The argument the NITC has very few from north Kerala is not true. I am not sure about the data now....

Disagree to things related to engg. IIMs does contribute in terms of management consultancy they provide. So does NIT in technical consultancy. West hill college is far better in infra compared to its counterparts. It has decent buildings and full labs for whatever course it has. kannur college is old college so cannot compare with these relatively new colleges which are just 10-12 yrs old. Many of the mananthavadi engg colleges are run under kannur engg college.
simpliCITY March 1st, 2012, 08:10 AM Don't forget the KMCT and other private colleges around Calicut. KMCT is huge. they have Medical, Dental,Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing and Ayurveda college in their Mukkam campus. The buildings and surroundings are still under construction.
