View Full Version : The Point | Gateshead | 9/6/5 Fl | Dormant
johnnypd October 29th, 2009, 02:21 AM This thread is for discussion of UK Land Estate's The Point development in Gateshead. As it is connected to the Ochre Yards residential development we can also discuss that one too as it is still under protracted, phased construction. As for "The Point", I don't think construction has started.
Description from UK Land Estates:
The Point rises above Gateshead Quays overlooking the River Tyne's famous Quayside.
The Point offers contemporary design alongside stunning Edwardian buildings; setting new standards for the modern city centre businesses.
Only a short stroll away are some of the region's iconic tourist spots including the Sage, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and within 10 minutes you can be in either Gateshead or Newcastle city centre.
Plans include office, leisure and hotel accommodation set in spectacular surroundings; the commercial heart of a true urban village.
* 4/5 star hotel opportunity approx. 120 beds
* Approx 200,000 sq.ft of brand new Grade A office accommodation
* Bar/Restaurant opportunities of up to 12,000sqft
* Refurbishment of listed buildings to form bars, restaurants and destination
retailing around central courtyard
* Mix of Edwardian & contemporary architecture
* Over 600 residential apartments comprising new build and refurbished
Edwardian structures
* True urban village providing the opportunity to Live, Work, Rest and Play
* External landscaping of the highest quality

bigchrisfgb October 29th, 2009, 02:27 AM Thats very interesting, and very good designs. A 5* Hotel is something which we need, It's just a shame that it isn't on the Newcastle side, the buildings seem to be more of a Newcastle style that we have seen recently, like Welbar Central, Kings Gate, Time Central, they would also keep in with the Tyneside Classical buildings.
By the plans it's a 10/10 from me, which isn't a score I give out much, or I don't even think I have given that score out before.
jayo October 29th, 2009, 02:51 AM wheres the site? :) looks of a high quality. Thumbs up for me

By the looks of the website, sort of east slightly to the Sage.
Talisker October 29th, 2009, 04:58 AM But I always thought this was one the other side of the Tyne bridge - next to the ochre yards development, right?
It's not bad, especially with that edwardian element and decent use of public space. Not sure about the blockniness of the buildings though as this will be very prominant on the skyline.
Geordie Ahmed October 29th, 2009, 05:19 AM The design looks good BUT it depends exactly where it will sit and how it will look within its setting - only then we will truly be able to determine what it will look like
Mr Brightside October 29th, 2009, 06:44 AM I love those renders, very high quality!
Irish Blood English Heart October 29th, 2009, 09:17 AM I think this is right next to my friend's apartment... that derelict goods building you can see at the Gateshead end of the metro bridge?
Looks good.

It is directly opposite the Copthorne Hotel on the other side of the river, next to (as Irish says) the Metro Bridge. I looked on the UK Land Estates site and there isn't a 'map' available showing it marked, but that's where it is.
SCNewcastle October 29th, 2009, 09:45 AM The website (http://www.uk-land-estates.co.uk/property/property.asp?return=developments&prop=1222&loc=&type=&size=&page=2) for this doesn't look in an entirely healthy state. Multimap subscription expired, and odd russian URLs pasted in at the bottom of each section. Are these people flourishing?
elliott October 29th, 2009, 11:59 AM Heres a location plan of the site,

i reckon it's been hacked as for a few months McAfee and Google both listed it as a site that could harm your computer. And now there's dodgy russian links at the end of paragraphs.
UK Land Estates are also responsible for 57 quayside and as we know, nowt has happened there either. Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, former MP, chair of the Baltic and the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative is Chairman of the company though.
Dan_NUFC October 29th, 2009, 03:07 PM Really impressed by these plans. I have a feeling they won't get built though which will be such a shame.
johnnypd November 2nd, 2009, 12:29 AM ive seen a few references to UK Land Estates as the north east's biggest developer and they are developing other things atm so there is still hope that this one may get off the ground. however i reckon we'll be waiting for another couple of years.
NewcastleStu November 3rd, 2009, 07:36 PM 600 apartments? I think they're mental!
johnnypd November 3rd, 2009, 07:39 PM pretty sure this scheme has no residential element to it, that's probably referring to the wider 'Ochre Yards' development, that this is placed alongside/within. i think it's all office, leisure and hotel.
Talisker November 4th, 2009, 03:15 AM So is the ochre yards finished now, or is it restricted to the buildings shown on the google aerial photo?
mickyjames October 26th, 2010, 03:51 PM where did you manage to get the outlined site image from??
i'm currently trying to find the exact size of the site without success,! can you help with that?

Hi mickyjames, welcome to the forum!
The outlined image is taken from Google Maps/Earth it would seem. However here is one of the layout plans from the planning documents...

This may help with what you are looking for? If not the planning application can be found at the following link: http://planning.gateshead.gov.uk/publicaccess/tdc/dcapplication/application_detailview.aspx?KEYVAL=IMWVG4HKI0000&module=P3&hidereturn=true
All of the planning documents can be accessed from there.
Hope this helps!
kedos October 27th, 2010, 01:01 AM I've heard the next tenement, sorry block of "apartments", is about to start construction again at Ochre Yards. I'm amazed Bellway think they can make any money out of them!
Tyr October 27th, 2010, 09:32 PM Strange this is happening, sounds like the sort of thing which was all the rage back in boom times 10 years ago but is fallng apart now. I thought the quayside was no longer so glitzy and expensvie and the bubble there had utterly burst?
Talisker October 27th, 2010, 09:43 PM There was plenty of activity there when I went past on the train last week, so it looks like it's already started.

Just having a look at some of those "dormant projects" and came across comment above dated 27 October 2010
Nothing seems to be happening on this project and I think the "so it looks like it's already started" comment relates to the Ochre Yards Bellway housing development works
All that is there at present is site hoardings and "Proposed Work" signboard (with slightly damaged plastic face)

I am not sure whether this partly demolished former railway building is to become part of the development - but it is located behind the site hoardings
