OK, you set me up for a deeper explanation of Orthodox architecture. When looking at these churches one might think that Russians had no money to build something more impressive - however, Novgorod Republic was very wealthy and advanced for it's time - for example, the whole city was literate almost entirely. But Orthodox architecture works on another level. Humans can only reach perfection in simplicity. But perfection is subjective. In case of Orthodox architecture we have a religious philosophy - when you study it you begin to understand the beauty of Orthodox architecture - so it's conceptual beauty we're talking about. But not necessarily - if these churches resonate with your psychological type you can get them without studying the Orthodox philosophy.

PS: Moscow style (http://www.skypalace.org/europe/slavic/east_slavic/russia/moscow.shtml) isn't truly Orthodox (still a great style).

In fact I like medieval styles, specially islamic and mudejar.

Indeed, no way. There are loads of cities with more baroque heritage in any single European country.


Think of Prague, Torino, Bamberg, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Bath, Porto, Valencia, Cracow, Vienna, Rome, ... And damn, there are so many baroque towns everywhere! In Germany, France, Spain, Austria and Italy they're everywhere.

No chance for Ouro Preto, sorry. But it definetely is the Baroque town outside Europe that stands first on the list to mention.

That's the fact, american baroque is different and very special, not an old fashioned copy of european models as it's used to say :okay:

For Baroque I think its birthplace deserves to be considered the most important city. Rome was the birthplace of Baroque and has an unmatchable amount of churches, squares, paintings of the Baroque age (XVII century)

Btw, Quito (capital of Ecuador) is another S-American city with considerable Baroque heritage. Also think of places like Havana, Old Panama City, Potosi & Sucre in Bolivia, Tucuman & Cordoba (Argentina), Old Lima and Arequipa in Peru, Santiago de Chile, Cusco in Peru, Salvador da Bahia & Sao Luis or Olinda in Brazil, Cuenca, Saint George’s (Bermudas), Coro in Venezuela, Mompos (Colombia), Willemstad, Antigua Guatemala, Mexican old towns such as those of Campeche, Puebla, Morelia, Oaxaca, Taxco or San Miguel de Allende (search for Pueblo Magico to find more!)...

Damn, just found some awesome places besides these I never heard of through some research :)

I love Baroque! It was the apex of beauty as far as European architecture went, and can be seen everywhere on the continent from Spain to Russia to Turkey. I also love Art Deco, especially the old skyscrapers in cities like New York and Chicago.

You just can't beat the opulence and intricacy of Baroque architecture. If I could tear down the piece of shit city called Edmonton and rebuild it in baroque, I would. :banana:
