An Artist's rendering shows the new Central World Hotel Bangkok and Convention Centre, due to be completed in early 2006. Located at the Central World Plaza complex at Bangkok's prime Ratchaprasong intersection, the new tower designed by Tandem and BBG of New York rises 189 metres from street level to the top corwn.
Chad April 12th, 2004, 08:43 AM Central World Hotel Bangkok & Convention Centre
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thailand's Central Hotels & Resorts has selected the design of the Central World Hotel Bangkok & Convention Centre, the Group's future flagship hotel due to be completed in early 2006, designed as a collaborative effort between Tandem and BBG, New York.
"The Lotus Blooms Over Bangkok" is the architecture at the top of the tower unfolds into a dramatic outer shell, culminating in two elongated arches. This imagery is inspired from a young lotus flower blooming high above the water in the "Patumwan" area where the hotel is located. "Patumwan" in Thai means "Lotus Eden". This graceful architectural gesture evokes the harmony born out of the disorder and will become an immediate urban landmark.
The hotel tower is integrated into a multipurpose podium. In addition to the hotel public floors, this large volume houses parking floors and extensive convention facilities. This state-of-art convention center features 20,000 square meter convention hall and numerous function rooms. These facilities, easily accessed from the street via a dedicated bank of elevators, are situated in close proximity to the hotel ballroom and meeting rooms allowing the two facilities to be used concurrently.
The iconic hotel tower soars high above the podium to take its place as a landmark building in the Bangkok skyline. The mass of the podium is a succession of concentric circles layered around the tower shaft. The glass and metal cylinder rises directly from the street to a height of approximately 189 meters. Its architectural expression consists of an arrangement of horizontal banding overlaid onto a strong vertical framework. Dynamism and the play of transparency versus solidity are the hallmarks of the overall design. These elements combine to create a building whose lightness belies its large size of 57 floors.
Group' executive vice president, Mr. Gerd Steeb, said "The dramatic figure of the Central World Hotel Bangkok will be instantly recognized amid the busy skyline of Bangkok and that means the first
achievement in our Marketing mission".

Central really has a great plan for this project to compete with the mighty Siam Paragon.
Jo April 13th, 2004, 10:10 PM A unique and nice looking tower is good advertising for the business that occupies the building.. same as with Kasikorn Bank HQ. And that's advertising that only cost money during construction. :)
BTW, the diagram pic came very quickly!!
Central World Tower will only be 45 storeys tall?? :wallbash:

petey November 16th, 2004, 06:55 AM does anyone know the expected due date? hopefully the construction will speed up tremendously because the WTC office building is almost finish...
this building is one of my most favorite buidlings in the world!
anyway.. is the central world trade plaza and siam square going to have a major renovation since it's surrounded with all classy modern building? Plus.. MBK already had one!
Hitesh November 16th, 2004, 07:10 AM Central World Plaza is going to be renovated for sure. I think they are planning on starting it next year.
There have been proposals for renovating Siam Square which can be seen in www.2bangkok.com
I think that will be harder to organise though because Siam Square is leased out to many different tenants.
I dont really like some of the redesign plans for Siam Square, mainly because they want to cover it up and I like it when you can walk around there in the open air. hot, but nice.

OK, I think there are some misunderstandings.
Let see, Central World Hotel and Central World Plaza+Central World Tower are Practically different owner, Central Hotel and Resorts and Central Pattana.
They are related in a way, yes. But both got differents set listing own firm and directors of boards.
So, that means Central World Hotel still has to pay the rental fees of the land area which is the location of the Hotel to Central Pattana, the owner of the whole complex.
Despite that, the completion of two towers actually have nothing to do with eachother in one or another way., The early 2006 is the expectation of completion of the Hotel., while the office tower will be completed very soon from now on...:)
Hitesh November 16th, 2004, 01:28 PM They are seperate companies but theyre owned by the same people.

the "siam square" i was talking about is the old green building that is connected to Discovery Center.. It would be awesome if it gets renovated.

Personally I like it with its green facade that stands out from other buildings and even the large advertising on it.
BTW those ads on its facade, are they of the 'page flipping' or static kind?

You don't see them anymore in Los Angeles..
ThirskUK December 15th, 2004, 08:29 AM I just heard the news that CU will renovate all the facade in Siam Square, starting from the curved one onn the Patumwan intersection.
It'll be translucent glass curtain wall with media projected on it and also ads stickers.
They'll begin construction next year if I was not mistaken.
Hitesh December 15th, 2004, 12:32 PM thats very good news.
it will be a nice looking area when the art museum is completed on the opposite side in a few years.
Chad December 15th, 2004, 04:26 PM so they changed the design?
I dont think so.
Hitesh December 15th, 2004, 06:56 PM I think they have man.
The original rendering has the building more circular looking and one of the 'fins' are taller than the other.
http://skyscraperpage.com/gallery/data/500/898wtc_hotel_2.jpg
Chad December 15th, 2004, 07:00 PM What can I say, That rendering above (with the Office Tower) is not the rendering for the hotel, lots of mistaken occurs.
The Proportion of the complex is not evenright, just look and see that the Hotel is facing wrong site and it will not extended out from the main complex that much.
Seems funny.
petey December 15th, 2004, 07:01 PM atfirst i thought they changed the rendering too.. but then i assumed that the first rendering is probably misleading.. the reason why the first fin is taller is probably because it's closer to the "viewer".

Hitesh December 16th, 2004, 06:27 AM some people say the first rendering is wrong, some say the second.
if u want my opinion, i think the second rendering sucks.
i wouldnt be surprised if they changed the design to get more useable floor space out of the building, it wouldnt be the first time a building's architectural integrity was compromised in the name of higher profits.
Chad December 16th, 2004, 03:27 PM I'm still telling you here Hitesh, They did not changed the design., What made u think they changed it anyway, so funny to see how u reacted to referances so sensitively. Without suring anything, u already scream just like you know so well or may be you just accord to your self too much?
Jo December 16th, 2004, 06:05 PM Aah.. the tower looks a lot better in the original rendering. I sure hope it's just the new rendering that is messed up :(

no i wasnt screaming anything, it just looks different, im sure even you can see that.
the original rendering shows the building is circular whilst the second shows it as more of an oval shape.
and im not Thaksin where I think I am always correct, in fact that is far from the truth. If you explain where or how I am wrong I will be the first one to admit my mistake.
In this case however, I think the pictures speak for themselves right?
Pas December 17th, 2004, 03:57 AM I was under the impression that the architect used the same design as another (unsuccessful competition entry) design of a building in Dubai.

OK thanks for clarifying that Chad. I saw another rendering of a Dubai building posted here sometime ago and thought it's the same design.

Chad January 18th, 2005, 02:47 PM Yes, as I said at First it's Going to be 180 meters. But "Archstudent", one of our forummers concerns over the heigh tthat he was quite sute that 180 is the number of the last floor plate and if including the crown, total is equal 235 meters.
Never The less, my self still think it's going to be 180 meters as the news reported.

RafflesCity February 23rd, 2005, 01:28 PM awesome model!
the hotel is rising out of the ground now..
BKKinTO February 23rd, 2005, 05:11 PM The hotel looks so small from the model.
pon February 23rd, 2005, 07:22 PM The hotel is smaller than the rendering we have seen before?? :(
So the height of it should be around 170m? (Compared to 205m of CWT)
Pas February 23rd, 2005, 09:30 PM Nice model, Chad.. although hotel doesn't look as slender as the rendering.
I like the new 'glass box' addition to Zen.
Chad February 23rd, 2005, 11:19 PM The hotel is actually around as tall as the office, but it's smaller. Sounds reasonal though since the office tower's footprint is gigantual.
If you cant really think of the shape of the hotel, think of 2 joined tubular that formed into one cyclindral shape.
pon February 24th, 2005, 05:24 AM The hotel is actually around as tall as the office
Good.
The model is displayed in the lobby of the office tower?

Tony BKK February 27th, 2005, 05:19 PM I saw this model 2 days ago. The hotel does look rather short and definately not as nice as its rendering. It seem that this tower would no longer posess darker tone surface but grey and green.

Chad March 2nd, 2005, 06:31 AM I think the crown it's self is high, but seems like they increased 2-3 floors on the top.
http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~passean/centralworldhotel1.JPG
Pas March 2nd, 2005, 08:06 AM It looks better in the rendering.
Speed March 2nd, 2005, 08:34 AM the rendering drawing looks idealized & slimmer and taller, and the model looks a bit stockier and squatter, but I think the model design looks great anyway :) BUT it would have been nice if the angle of the loop was taller & sharper to create a much more noticable bold dramatic flair
anyway, I really like the way the line of the loop continues down the building to create a harmonic integrated design :cheers1:
Imperfect Ending March 2nd, 2005, 05:19 PM i just hope they light up the corwn like how they light up the wtc's crown. or it will be cool if the whole fin is lit up :D

I completely agree. It's still very good but it lost a lot of the dramatic flair that made it so outstanding :)
Hitesh March 2nd, 2005, 06:32 PM Chad how can you say the rendering and the model is the same design. look at it.
pon March 2nd, 2005, 06:52 PM The crown in the rendering is quite big with total height around 13-14 floors but in the model it was smaller...around 3-4 floors.
And also in the rendering it has more feeling of metalic facade. Anyway it is way nicer than amari watergate and novotel siam.:)
Chad March 3rd, 2005, 12:39 AM Chad how can you say the rendering and the model is the same design. look at it.
It is, but they increased 2 levels on the top. Thats why the crown looks shorter due to totaled levels on it.

Chad July 31st, 2005, 02:00 PM It's the crown Property Bureau's Land, no one can really do anything unless the Firm them selves decide to develop something there which likely to be one very soon.
This is a very honesty from me, I dont see many slumps in Bangkok anymore, a lot less than in the 90's and this is (I believe) made it to the top 3 biggest.
DD2020 July 31st, 2005, 05:22 PM Yeah...I see.
I know that we are getting better and better everyday but I can't hold my humour when seeing this picture.
:)
Zoowatch July 31st, 2005, 08:14 PM with regards to those little houses in the picture.
i would call them "community" rather than slum
how many of you have actually walked in there and explore the entire precinct? come on, don't judge it just by looking at those roofs. calling it slum is a little harsh here.
the part closer to Th. Ratchadamri may be a little messy but once you get in there... it's quite a cosy and safe community with all public utilities (water, electricity, sewage) supplied.
this community isn't too crowded either in my opinion. there are no smelly puddles / sewage, no filthy heaps of rubbish left uncollected, no pests teeming about and that's why it doesn't fall under the slum / shantytown category.
just that those lower-income families don't build their houses with beautiful roofs, glass facade and a marble floor lobby does not mean that we should brand it "slum". if Bangkok is all about high-end elitist estates, then I wouldn't like it anymore.
this community is not as established / well-constructed mainly because of the C/D road saga 10 to 15 years ago when the ETA wanted their land to build the 2nd-stage expressway.
Even in cities like London, Dubai or even Singapore, there are still many less well-maintained estates to be found. Sometimes, we you see along a few stretches of roads can be a lot worse than what we see in BKK.
The thing is that we do not believe in / do not attempt to hide those ugly bits of Bangkok away from the expats / tourists' eyes. Not the same can be said about other cities which I mentioned earlier. When you go to Singapore or Dubai, you confine yourself to the touristy parts of the city where everything is nice, neat and beautiful. How many Thai tourists have ever seen the not-so-nice parts that the Thai construction works in Singapore have to live in? How many of us have actually ventured out of the 'typical tourist routes'?
i take pride in Bangkok being very honest to the world not only about how we have modernised our city, albeit lagging behind some of our neighbours, but also in the many social problems or urban ills that the ciy is currently confronting.
the fact that there is:
a presently in-use palace (Wang Sa Pathum),
a Royal temple (Wat Pathumwanaram),
a modern office tower (Central World Tower),
2 world-class shopping malls (CWP / Siam Paragon)
are all lying side-by-side with this low-profile community speaks very well of a civil society that the city currently enjoys.
if we can look at things this way, we will appreciate the fabric of this city better...
Bangkok can never be a pastic city full of modern but soul-less towers, and i don't think it should try to be one...
Chad August 1st, 2005, 03:32 AM I have, I often use the walkway inside the "community" to go to Petchburi Road from the WTC.
And I think it's really called "slum", when the government agency come to my school for some volumteery teacher they always claim the area as "slump behind Wat Pathumwanaram".
Besides, I dont really want to called it slum but thats what likely it is. " a district of a city marked by poverty and inferior living conditions" : :sleepy:
Pas August 1st, 2005, 04:24 AM I remember going to my highschool I used to walk through that area a lot. While I don't think we should be removing or relocating this community, and as zoowatch pointed out, destroying one of the city's fabric, I think at least the area can be made more presentable w/ better sanitary conditions. I mean for the sake of the people living there.
For a start, I don't know how they resolve the drainage problems all stormwater must have been flushed directly into the canals including all domestic wastes??
And imo from a fire hazard point of view the confine spaces and the kind of building materials used are totally unacceptable. They are DEATH TRAP. What about ventilation, fire escape routes, are there any?
if this area was to catch fire.. think about the potential losses.
if there was a fire everyone would probably have to jump into the smelly canals and then they probably get toxic poison!!!
I remember there was a couple of incidents of gas tank explosions in Pratunam. What tragedy. anyway sorry for the rambling.
Pas August 1st, 2005, 04:29 AM btw thanks for the update Chad :)
kuanteen August 2nd, 2005, 10:24 AM Yep...part of the city's fabric. That's why there're so many high walls in town, 'cause you can't choose your neighbourhood....
Chad August 17th, 2005, 04:32 PM Steeb to steer firm’s overseas expansion
Industry veteran takes over from Suthikiat as company president
Suchat Sritama
Central Plaza Hotel Plc has put veteran hotelier Gerd Steeb in charge of its hotel operations to guide the company’s foreign expansion.
His new marching orders come after the company, with businesses in the hospitality and restaurant sectors, announced that former president Suthikiat Chirathivat was made chairman, paving the way for Steeb to succeed him.
Suthikiat will continue to oversee company policy and provide key strategic direction.
The group is expected to dip its toes into the hotel and restaurant business abroad but would give no details. The expansion onto foreign soil dovetails with the company’s five-year business plan, which calls for building five-star hotels in Krabi, Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok. It will also expand the number outlets under the many restaurant chains it operates, including KFC and Pizza Hut among others.
Later this year, the company will open Central Krabi Bay Resort, a five-star resort with 192 rooms. The firm anticipates that it will be as popular as its other resorts, including the Sofitel Central Hua Hin Resort and the Central Samui Beach Resort.
Construction is already underway on Central World Hotel Bangkok, a 55-storey, five-star hotel that will boast 505 rooms and a large convention complex when opens in late 2007. The targeted market will be corporate customers, incentive groups and organisers of meetings, conventions and exhibitions.
Also, Central Wong Amat Pattaya Beach Resort will close for renovation and be turned into a five-star resort with 555 rooms. Construction will start later this year and finish in 2008.
And in Phuket, the company plans to start constructing a five-star hotel in 2007, to be completed it in 2009.
The company’s restaurants include KFC, Pizza Hut, Mister Donut, Auntie Anne’s, Baskin Robbins and Steak Hunter, all managed by its subsidiary, Central Restaurant Group Co. The company plans to increase the number of outlets to more than 500, from the current 371, an expansion that should be completed in the next two years.
Prior to his new post as president, Steeb served as executive vice president of Central Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality-management arm. The German national has more than 30 years’ experience in the hotel industry, including a 15-year stint in senior management with Accor. The group also appointed Thiradej Chirathivat senior executive vice president of company.
The eldest son of Suthikiat, Thiradej was executive director of Central Restaurants for the last 14 years.
