Well, gee, if you don't see the difference, it's prolly a waste of effort to try to explain it, but... from what I've seen, in Romania, most highway bridges and viaducts use boring precast beams and blocky-looking bents, like this:

As far as the Czech comparison, from what I've seen on this site, the Czechs seem to go for really nice-looking viaduct designs more consistently than most other countries, though most other countries do the same to some degree. I'm delighted to see that Romania has decided to use what I regard as a very aesthetically pleasing design for this important and highly visible project. To me, it looks like something the Czechs would build, and that's meant as a compliment. :)

I didn't say that i don't see the difference(off course i can see that it's not the same than most of the other similar constructions, i'm not blind) , i was just asking, what do you see so special in them? Now you explained it, so i have my answer.:) Still, they look pretty plain to me, and not so far off in "esthetics" in comparison to other new viaducts and overpasses built in the last few years in Romania.

Yes and yes. They are reinforcing the subway station at the end which overlaps with the bridge and there will be a direct lift link between the tram and subway stations.

I understand that the paint might be specially made to be more resistant to humidity and other types of temperatures, but I am sure they could have used a different color. Anyhow the flyover is a beauty :okay:

I was looking at the pictures and the span between the two bridge columns seem to be quite narrow How many lanes per direction would the bridge have excluding the Tram lines which will cut some of the actual space.To me it looks like a maximum 1 line per direction !!!!

I bet auto lanes will be on the other side of the columns ! Also becouse between them will be not only tram lines but the tram station too, as far as I know !

I do not know much about this project but it seems that instead of a great big bridge (over railway tracks no less) and elevated highway -- a tunnel or at least a much more modest overpass could have been built instead of this grand project. Elevated highways through built up city areas tend to destroy the quality of urban life. Although it seems that sections of this highway are over industrial areas. Perhaps someone can give a brief overview of the project and the areas nearby. Thanks

What great big bridge?? :dunno: We are talking about 2 km between houses, a shopping-mall, a factory, over railway-tracks and over a river !!! That bridge should have been like 100m tall and 2km long, to get to its destination. :nuts: Also you cannot build a tunnel in that area, given the fact that you have to dig under the metro lines, which themselves are under a river. So building a 70-80m deep road tunnel would have been a SciFi effort. (not to mention the safety and costs of such a construction)
What modest overpass?? Why do you consider this project a grand project?? Only the cable stayed bridge is a bit more "special", but i think it was a very good option, it will be a spectacular landmark for that area of the city, especially at night, with all the lights. Not to mention, that the bridge will have a multimodal station, which will connect tram with train and metro. It's much better than building an ugly grey concrete "modest" overpass. The landscape in that area is sad enough as it is. Maybe with this project it will recover.

You are right. Elevated highways tend to destroy the quality of urban life, but this is another loooong discussion...:), like i said, the Basarab Flyover was the only option for that area and for it's purpose: to ease traffic from North to South, and to take some traffic off the Grant Bridge, which lies a few hundred meters away, and which experienced some major traffic jams in the last years, and is not capable of handling all the traffic growth in that area of the city anymore.

Yes, it'll be soon finished. Work begun in 2007, i think, and it took so much time to reach this point of construction, of the landowners blame who were greedy and demanded huge sums for expropriation. Final cost = 210 million Euros (according to wikipedia). This is not the only project in work ment to ease our jungle traffic by the way, and thank you for your interest :cheers:

Well, it was open for traffic today at 6 AM, as planned. A large column of cars was already there waiting to be the first people to pass, and they did it with horns blazing. People have been waiting for over 9 years for the work site to turn into a bridge.

The bridge was later blessed :nuts: and with all the formalities ready, it's no longer U/C, but Completed.

...these are the new Bucur LF trams, so far 3 in number...

Five actually: #401 (built in 2007 and put in service in 2009) and #402,403,404,405 (these four have been built between 2010-2011 and will be put in service this summer) ;)

My honest opinion is that the result is truly amazing! And I think that more people need to see this achievement. Great job, neighbours! I visited Bucharest not long ago and I truly believe your wonderful city deserves projects like this one. :) :cheers:

2 reasons I think: rain can still come from the side of the bridge when coupled with strong winds and consistency of station architecture. That station model is lately adopted throughout Bucharest so maybe they want to keep the design.

BTW: This bridge is the first piece of infrastructure in Europe which has an early warning system for impending high power earthquakes, which has been implemented as well to other strategic infrastructure in Romania (such as nukes, dams etc). The system announces a powerful quake 45 seconds in advance on the screens installed on the bridge, warning cars not to get on.
