My last picture in the main post is in fact in the Incheon International Airport. Come to think of it I think I've seen the back of it when I last went to Korea to visit my grandmother. You can also see the Green sign that leads to stairs which is familiar scene found throughout other Korean subway stations

I guess the train in the last pic was imported from Japan, which explains why the same train runs in two different countries.

I wish someone from Seoul can answer this question.

I was in Seoul a few weeks ago and right before I headed down to the subway station, my tour guide warned me that some stations (especially the interchanges) were very complex and that it might be really hard to find the desired platform. Is that true?

When I used the subway, I found the signage wasn't so clear. Sometimes I didn't even know what they were talking about. But I travelled from Myongdong to Hoehyeon and both were not interchanges so it was relatively easy.

Moreover, my tour guide said that not many people in Seoul were willing to use the subway because the passengers often had to change trains a few times. Is this true?

I personally think that the Seoul subway is a pretty good system (brightly lit, clean, and TV on some trains! I didn't try changing trains so I didn't know how difficult that was). Stations are quite pleasent looking as well. I wasn't able to hear the announment clearly (I heard something like "The next stop is Hoehyeon, the left side doors will open". Correct me if I'm wrong) as the train was a bit too noisy.

Ok.. since I used to live in Seoul's metro where they actually had an elevated railway/subway system connected with Seoul's, I'll be able to answer some of your questions.

"I was in Seoul a few weeks ago and right before I headed down to the subway station, my tour guide warned me that some stations (especially the interchanges) were very complex and that it might be really hard to find the desired platform. Is that true?"

Yes, some of the stations are complex, but it's not that difficult to find the platform(s). When I was eleven years old, I was able to go to Yangchun District from Suwon by myself using the subway/el train systems. Though if you cannot read Korean at all, it might be difficult since the English signs are smaller than the Korean ones.

"Moreover, my tour guide said that not many people in Seoul were willing to use the subway because the passengers often had to change trains a few times. Is this true?"

Uh.. that's true in a way. It is true that some people hate subway because it is very crowded, relatively expensive (starting from 75 cents), slow, and sometimes complicated. But still, 7 million people uses Seoul's subway everyday.

"I personally think that the Seoul subway is a pretty good system (brightly lit, clean, and TV on some trains! I didn't try changing trains so I didn't know how difficult that was). Stations are quite pleasent looking as well. I wasn't able to hear the announment clearly (I heard something like "The next stop is Hoehyeon, the left side doors will open". Yeah, it's crowded and noisy, but you heard the announcement right :)

Ok, since this thread is about subways which are related to railways, i have a question about Korean Rail system. As you and i know, South Korea is a small country (size, not population). So, what is the situation involving freight traind/companies involvedin it? Is it still profitable to use trains to transport production. While i was watching Arirang TV, which from timr to time shows about the economy of S.K, it is visable that most of freight are transported by trucks (aka containers). So ...... .

Yeah. In South Korea, almost all freight depend on container trucks since you can reach anywhere in the country from Seoul within five hours by car. The rail system (especially the KTX) is mostly built to carry passengers. :)

So theorically in the future it is a chance that rails might be chaged into Maglev, as almost all freight is transported by vehicles?

If Maglev becomes "more" realistic and cheaper than now, there will be a better chance for that. But I guess it won't happen in the next twenty years since the Korean government is still building two more railways for the KTX. (Their estimated completion date is 2010.)

It is very excellent trains. Seoul's subway is very colorful and beautiful appear. It is very futureistic design.

But a crrection, I see the last picture of the blue train, which is color of dark blue and a circle front, it is the train called "Nankai Rapit-alpha Limited Express" whichgo to Osaka's Kansai International Airport. "Nankai Railway" is the name of company which own those train. It is in Osaka, Japan.

You say it Incheon International Airport, but in fact the station is Nankai Railway's "Namba Station" in Osaka. I recognize the blue and orange color of stripes on side of other train beside it, that is company colors of Nankai Railway's train. I recgnize the sign of the stair, under the green sign of exit, see the another sign which is blue and white, it is the sign says: "Namba CITY Nankai" which is the shopping center under the Nankai's Namba Station.

"Namba CITY Nankai" shopping sign

Are you nuts?
Is there any reason they can never ever be artists? huh?

:?

Kyenan

:sleepy:

:sleepy:

What the width of the car?
http://photoimg.enjoyjapan.naver.com/view/47/43/enjoyjapan_12/6000/5860.jpg

It looks much wider than in Moscow (we have 2,7m wide carbody in metro trains)

Ellatur

What's that woman in that advert pointing to? What does it say...
By the way she looks real good!

The South Koreans are really good at innovation and all things creative...like their clam shell phones too...

Trains in Singapore are about 3.21m in width

The Singapore MRT (Subway) is cool generally (The newer trains) as in they have these LED & LCD Panels in the trains which display advertisements, train safety videos and important train service information...and the trains are sleek and modern and stuff...
But...
You won't see themed train cars here (They do cover the train car body and interiors with advertisements but thats about as far as it goes... You won't expect to see the lights in the trains cars become green nor will you see things hanging down from the poles) Nothing is placed or spent on the Subway unless it serves a practical purpose... That's why I consider the Seoul Subway SUPER COOL is this aspect... Imagine stepping into a subway car and actually being entertained by what you see on board...cool...

(This train will be imported from Japan and get installed to Incheon Airport according to some rumors)
http://photoimg.enjoyjapan.naver.com/view/47/43/enjoyjapan_12/7000/6667.jpg

The left train is actually Osaka's famous Airport Express 'Rapeat' and the right train is Osaka's commuter train (judging from the train colors, it's Nankai Private Railways), and the station in the shot is Namba Station in Osaka.
I didn't know that Incheon had imported that airport express from Osaka. but is that true?

All of these pictures are extremely outdated, I'm afraid.

The entire metropolitan subway system is being upgraded to screen door standards. Yes, the entire system. Many (if not most) of the Line 2 stations already have screen doors (like the ones they have in the new Hong Kong system).

The overall effect of a massive subway system being completely remodeled to 21st century standards is - quite impressive.

 Great! Those screen doors on line 2 really improved the stations, cutting down on noise greatly and looking lovely too.

I really miss the Seoul subway (not so much the crowds on line 2, but...) it makes it really easy for foreign residents and visitors to navigate the city. It is already a huge network, and should get even better by the looks of it.

Haha.. wow those themed cars are really cool. Seoul's trains are so wide! Looks like you can fit four standing people between the two side seating benches!

I had to look twice at this one, as it looks like hanging pigs..

Yeah, line 2 was pretty crowded most of the time. But i liked the old trains on line 2 that still had cushoned seats. The new line 2 trains look awesome too. My favorite part is the elevated section between 건대입구 and 잠실, it is easily 4-5 stories high and you get such a great view.

There is a nice elevated section round the other side of the loop as well. Maybe around Sindorim?

Yes, Korea has some nice metro systems, especially the Seoul one which is quite underrated to many people for some reasons.
