Hi Sonnyville! Have an inquiry. Are you still at the LAX station? Anyway, I have a friend who flew PR103 on Oct 22, US date. Her back went on random check and my friend was not able to take her luggage with her. Anyway, may I request status of this luggage and if its on its way to Manila? Her name is January Zinnia Milanes Permalino.

    Thanks!

In August I think you should be fine as it is towards the end of the summer time vacationing season in the US. If you have anymore questions, I'd be glad to answer them. I hope this helped you a bit. I am sorry I cannot give a more definite answer, but explains the reason for direct/tech stops. If your flight is departing in the morning with PR113 operated by an A343, and direct flight it is declared after final weight and balancing is calculated - your arrival time in MNL will be around 17:00-17:30 PHT next day arrival opposed to the standard scheduled ETA of 19:05PHT with the tech stop in Guam.

This tends to work in favor of those who have many mileage accumulated specially when (Y) Economy/Fiesta class is overbooked. They will upgrade those who have enough to business class to accommodate more in Y class. But working against the favor of those non-reving or standby passengers.

Also be advised that with this mandate from PAL headquarters to operate direct. They are very strict with luggage policies. As much as possible they want the aircraft balanced in weight accurately to pull a 13hour 49minutes direct to MNL. They tend to offload cargo/baggage in favor of passengers when it operates direct.

If you want to avoid tech stopping in Guam, you have a better chance with PR113 in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. It is peak season summer time and PAL is almost fully booked every morning/night as it is the only carrier that operates directly to the Philippines.

Also this time of the year is the rainy seasons and weather conditions also force the flights to tech stop in Guam. I can tell you that the morning flight has a better chance of going direct compared to the evening PR103 flight. PR103 is operated by a B744 and it is the workhorse of PAL on this route. It is always full and also carries heavy cargo payload.

I really can't really give you a straight forward answer because right now it is peak season for US outbound to Manila. Everyone is back to work and school in the Philippines, but everyone else is spending vacation time back home there. So the load factor on PR113/PR103 is almost always full capacity. Meaning that the planes are heavy with passengers and cargo, warranting tech stops in Guam for refueling.

    Hi Mike,
About direct flights to Manila. We have a mandate from PAL headquarters, directly from the CEO himself - Ramon Sy Ang, as much as possible to operate our flights PR113/PR103 directly to Manila as much as possible and to avoid making tech stops in Guam. It is to cut cost - ground time in Guam and also it is to reduce airframe cycle. The age of the aircraft is determined by the number of cycles (landing and taking off) it has.

I notice you work at LAX. I fly LAX to Manila four times a year. I always use miles to upgrade to Manila and get two certificate to use on the way back.
two trips back to LAX I am in economy. i notice from your post that the new morning flight is going non stop to Manila because of load factor. I was wondering which day is the lightest load. I would try and find four empty seats in the middle to sleep. Also, I wonder with school out, would that affect which days are the lightest amount of people. I have a flight out of Lax in August. Will be buying ticket soon. Thanks, Mike Meyer at the beach in San Diego.
