We don't have much castles in Norway. Norway has, throug the ages, been a very poor country, with little rich people.
The royal castle is about the only one, and that is not even as big and nice as it originally was suppposed to. Like many other projects from that time, they went out of money before it was completed. The royal castle. http://gallery.timaltman.com/albums/2003_06_18/aaa.jpg http://www.norphoto.com/r/images1/norphoto5558.jpg http://www.norphoto.com/r/images1/norphoto5582.jpg http://www.oslo.kommune.no/dok/felle...oBolognesi.jpg |
why do you think tis the greatest one? For me its just four rococo houses and a big square. The chruch in the background is cool
In my point of view Drottningholms royal palace is the greatest even if the palace in Stockholm is bigger. http://www.abiyoyo.com/suecia/estoco...stocolmo21.jpg Drottningholms palace was build in the middle of the 17th century and was a bit a copy of Versailles. Its today one of those UNESCO world heritage things. But the greatest was the castle of Tre Kronor, the old castle of Stockholm, it burned down in the late 17th century, just before the big nordic war. http://home7.swipnet.se/~w-70853/modell3.JPG |
Kaunas Castle (Planning rebuild/reconstruct)
http://sophia.smith.edu/~ekaralyt/project2/stop1.html http://members.lycos.co.uk/attackeri...tai/pilis2.JPG http://members.lycos.co.uk/attackeris/miestai/pilis.JPG Kaunas castle is the oldest castle in Lithuania. It is situated at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers - the Nemunas and the Neris where the town was founded. The castle was built in the middle of the 14th century. Until the beginning of the 15th Century, Kaunas Old Castle was an important resistance post against the attacks of the Teutonic Order. After the victory of joint Lithuanian-Polish forces in the Zalgiris (Grunwald) battle in 1410, during the reign of Vytautas the Great, the Grand Duke of Lithuania (1392-1430), the period of true prosperity started. At that time Lithuania had already acquired Christianity. Kaunas was given the Magdeburg rights and enjoyed the years of development in trade, crafts, culture, and extensive contacts with Western Europe. Built in the 13th century, the castle was Lithuania?s first defensive bastion and the only double-walled castle in all of Lithuania. The surrounding walls were initially over 2m wide and 13m high. In 1362 however, after a three-week long siege, the crusaders destroyed it. By 1368 a second, stronger castle had been constructed. The castle originally had four towers, but over the centuries the river Neris has washed them away, forcing the northern walls to collapse. The remains of the castle rebuilt by Vytautas in the beginning of the 15th century reached our times. However, only the third of the castle survived. |
I'd agree with Amalienborg being my favourite, I think its unique layout is probably what sets it apart, Drottingsholm is amazing as well, they're all friggin amazing!

As NS said we don't have many castles in Norway. Exept slottet in Oslo we have only smaller ruines of castles which has been devastated during wars.
But here are a few from Trøndelag. Steinviksholm Slott Steinviksholm Slott is situated in the Trondheimsfjord, on a small island between Stjørdal and Leksvik. The castle was built in 1532, during the ages when Olav Engelbrektsson ruled Nidaros and Norway. However, Norway was in this age finally taken by Denmark in 1536. In the sevenyearswar the Swedish tried to conqure Nidaros several times. And on its way to the city they had to pass Steinvikholmen. The castle was then destroyed even though the Swedes never managed to take Nidaros for a longer period. Steinvikholmen was never rebuilt back to its first model, only the runies was cept. http://oddso.nvg.org/nsh/t-steinviksholm2.jpg Steinvikholmen when it was built. http://home.online.no/~john-pt/artim...einvikholm.jpg Steinvikholmen today. Austrått Austråttis a old and small caste further out in Trondheimsfjorden. It was first built in 1200 as a church, but was rebuilt into a castle in 1654-56. The castle was in the years after destroyed by wars including WWII and fires, but the main castle is still standing. http://oddso.nvg.org/nsh/t-austraatt2.jpg Austrått in 1853. http://www.kysthotell.no/images/Austrattborgen.jpg Storfosen In Trondheimsfjorden entrance you can find a island with some 200 inhabitants. But you can also find a small castle here as well. It was first built in the 11th century, by Ivar Horte who was killed under the battle of Kalvskinnet in Nidaros. The castle was destroyed several times during wars, but rebuilt again. http://oddso.nvg.org/nsh/t-storfosen2.jpg The castle in the 1770. |
