$58m upgrade for N Sydney station

September 21, 2005

A $58 million upgrade to the North Sydney railway station will be completed by 2008.

The city's fourth busiest station during peak hour, it is used by about 45,000 people every weekday, expected to grow to 70,000 by 2021.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma said it will be the first major upgrade since it the station was built as part of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932.

A North Sydney Council developer levy will pay 22 million of the cost.

Anyone has more info?

They've been talking about North Sydney upgrade for about 10 years, looks like it will finally go ahead.
Not related but Hornsby Station platform 5 & Stabling Project is also swiftly moving ahead and will be completed by 2008.

Fourth busiest? really?

Ahead of wynyard, central and town hall i presume. What about strathfield, parramatta? eastern subs line? Museum, St James

Anyway, upgrade is good news.

45'000 a day isnt that much is it? I thought it would have more... :S
What does Town Hall work at? I know Shinjuku is at about 2 million a day!!!

MILIUX September 21st, 2005 10:42 AM

I used to go to school at North Sydney and yeah, it's heck of a lot busy during rush hour. You have thousands per min stuffed on narrow stairs and train arriving regularly. Don't start with the horrible number of gates - it's shocking. It takes me 7 min to get off the train then through the gate. Most divert to Greenwood Plaza - it's a stampede!

You can find a list in Railpage's forum (provided they haven't deleted it citing the "security" implications of posting it)

It will look something like -
1. Town Hall
2. Wynyard
3. Martin Place
4. North Sydney
5. Bondi Junction
6. Parramatta
7. Chatswood
8. Central
9. Kings Cross

The figures are calculated on station entrances and exits, so Strathfield which might also have a large number of interchanging passengers loses out a bit.

St James is out of the top 10 and Museum is right down. Those stations don't do the traffic they did prior to Circular Quay station joining the circle...

Edit: And IIRC Town Hall does around 130-150k entrances/exits per day. Bondi Junction was near 50k.

About time. For a centre that size to have a little station is shocking!!!!!! I hope some renders come out soon.

MILIUX September 21st, 2005 12:57 PM

There are renders!

MILIUX September 22nd, 2005 02:48 AM

A $58 million upgrade of North Sydney train station was also revealed yesterday, with construction likely to begin next year.

The station, which is the fourth-busiest on the metropolitan network, has not had a substantial makeover since the Harbour Bridge linked it to the city lines in 1932.

Thanks for the ranks.

Central is only no. 8??? That's not at all what i expected, i would have thought at least no 4. But maybe that is because as has since been quoted, the figures are based on numbers starting and ending rail journeys and not transit points. Ie, Central is a big transit point.

The Figures that Hornetfig provided are for the peaks though... throughout the day you end up with these figures....

1.)Central 76,320
2.) Town Hall 70,050
3.)Wynyard 49,940
4.)Parramatta 26,830
5.)North Sydney 23,270
6.)Bondi Junction 19,450
7.)Circular Quay 17,920
8.)Redfern 17,830
9.)Chatswood 17,770
10.)Martin Place 17,560
11.)Strathfield 16,910
12.)Blacktown 15,240
13.)St Leanords 13,670
14.)Hurstville 13,190
15.)Burwood 12,260
16.)Kings X 11,630
17.)Hornsby 11,470
18.)Ashfield 10,850
19.)Kogarah 10,670
20.)Cabramatta 10,130
21.)Fairfield 9,980
22.)Liverpool 9,470
23.)Museum 9,070
24.)Bankstown 8,990
25.)St James 8,790
26.)Rockdale 8,630
27.)Penrith 8,190
28.)Epping 7,940
29.)Lidcombe 7,940
30.)Auburn 7,420

Overall out of the City Stations Martin Place, Museum and St James have a large amount of unused capacity. Central and Circular Quay have a minute amount of additional capacity and Kings X & Wynyard (upper levels only iirc)are at Capacity and Town Hall is well over capacity.

Central isn't number 8 but I forgot it and plopped it in at the end! :p

I did say they went "something" like that...

All the ESR stations have the same theoretical capacity except Martin Place with 50% extra (number of escalators), so if Kings Cross is at capacity, what is Bondi Junction at? And both these stations were supposedly upgraded (which actually meant lifts, toilets and paint) within the past 5 years. That said Martin Place is well used in peak, but out of peak passengers are concentrated at Town Hall and then the suburban commercial centres because of shopping. Martin Place on a Sunday is a ghost town - even the McDonalds doesn't open!

Essentially i think that Bondi Junction is over capacity (in peaks the escalators are usually set so its 3 peak direction 1 against as you probably know) Bondi Junction really needs 6 escalators, or higher speed escalators... To be truthfull im not 100% sure why Central handles the loadings better than BJ, with the same station layout....

Yes Martin Place outside of peaks is dead.

And North Sydney is just attrocious, and should have been upgraded more than a decade ago.

Out of the City Stations after North Sydney, i would look at Town Hall (occuring - and i dont quite agree with the new design i saw - all stairs are replaced with high speed escalators, with the old ones also replaced with high speed escalators. And the removal of one existing escalator and iirc staircase for an emergency exit to the unpaid area.), Then Bondi Junction, Wynyard (more barriers iirc are needed) then Circular Quay.

hornetfig September 23rd, 2005 02:14 AM

Bondi is run 3 up and 1 down in the PM peak. That's the only time problems occur - AM is OK. But doing anything from station-station concourse doesn't fix the problems with moving from station concourse-bus concourse.

It will be interesting to see what actually happens at Town Hall, with Treasury now I assume looking at what will need to be done when/if a station at Pitt St is built in the next 10 years, potentially meaning they'll be unwilling to release all the money (it was $50 mil or something) RailCorp wanted. Which probably means the concourse will be shoddily renovated. Then again with Woolworths lease with RailCorp running until 2011 (off the top of my head), it's not possible to reclaim the eastern part of the currently-unpaid concourse, which they would likely want to do post Woolworths leaving (which will happen because SCC won't renew the offices or shop lease)

Regarding the escalators: I've never ever come across escalators so slow. One wonders what sense it made to put them in everywhere in the the late 70s. (Maybe they were parts-compatible with the older ones then in use at Town Hall, Wynyard and North Sydney?) They're not even especially reliable these days, despite most having had their "25 year overhaul" to use RailCorp's words.

Do we have any pretty pictures of how they will look internally yet? :o)

Randwicked September 23rd, 2005 04:25 PM

Thanks James, always wanted to see a cross-section of Town Hall. Bloody hell, I didn't realise the CCT was so deep.

Randwicked September 23rd, 2005 04:33 PM

I can't see the North Sydney pics though.
