From the Design & Access Statement:

INTO Newcastle University is a joint venture between Newcastle University and INTO University Partnerships to provide pathway courses for overseas students intending to access undergraduate and postgraduate studies at UK universities.

INTO currently occupy a newly developed area to the south of the University’s city centre King’s Campus, completed in 2012 and comprising both residential and teaching accommodation. 537 residential bed spaces are provided in the Joseph Cowen and Bernicia Halls, and the 3000sqm INTO Pathway Centre provides teaching, catering and administrative facilities for over 700 students.

Since the centre opened, INTO have seen a rapid growth in student numbers, and additional accommodation is now required to support demand which is currently being met through the temporary use of below standard University space elsewhere on the campus .

The Line East Building, immediately to the north of the Pathway Centre, is ideally located to provide the additional accommodation required by INTO. The building has four floors plus a basement, and is connected to the upper two floors of the adjacent building above the Crow’s Nest Public House. Both buildings have been used in the past by the University for teaching, however in recent years they have been under-utilised as they have become obsolete and better accommodation has been made available elsewhere on the campus.

The proposed development would therefore not only solve the increased accommodation requirements of INTO, it would also seek to reinvigorate and bring back into intensive use this part of the campus

DoubleTree by Hilton officially opens at Newcastle International Airport
Newcastle International Airport Website, 9th December 2011

DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport will today hold its official grand opening ceremony with the Hon. David Miliband MP in attendance, along with prominent business leaders from across the region.

This tenth DoubleTree by Hilton UK location, at the North East’s largest airport, providing luxurious accommodations and outstanding meeting and event facilities, complements the airport’s continued growth strategy which includes a terminal expansion and a focus on attracting the business community to the region with its connectivity and world class facilities.

Dave Laws, chief executive of Newcastle International, said: “As the first internationally branded hotel at the airport, the DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport is very much a sign of confidence in both the North East and in the airport. This iconic building is a gateway to our region delivering access to a global business network.”

“The airport currently employs approximately 3,000 people from across the North East. With 4.5 million people expected to travel through Newcastle International in 2012, we see further potential for increased visitor numbers in 2013 which will bring economic benefit, investment and employment to the region.”

David Miliband MP said: “The continued expansion of Newcastle Airport is great news not just for Newcastle but for our whole region. The North East has a lot to offer, whether it be our first class dedicated workforce, those coming to the region for weekend breaks or holidays or for those who choose one of the regions Universities to study at.

The expansion programme at the airport will allow more people to come in and out of the region more quickly and efficiently, and to have a good quality hotel on site will add to the airports commitment of providing an excellent customer service”.

Description from newcastlegreatpark.com:

Newcastle Great Park (NGP) is an impressive sustainable urban development situated in the North East of England. Uniquely positioned in a rural setting, the park will encompass high quality residential dwellings, commercial premises and community facilities offering universal appeal.

Just three miles from Newcastle city centre, the development already has more than 550 homes built and occupied by residents who desire a great new way of living. When completed NGP will offer a wide range of contemporary housing, a high quality business park and a fully developed town centre incorporating retail, health, leisure, hotel and community facilities.

Half of the 1,200 acre site is being landscaped to create a rich mix of woodland and meadowland with hills, vales and streams- all of which can be enjoyed by residents and visitors to Newcastle Great Park. With the inclusion of wide open spaces, cycle paths and walkways the park promotes a healthy lifestyle for everyone to enjoy.

Newcastle Great Park is one of the most accessible locations in the North East from air, rail, road and sea. The development benefits from an entirely new infrastructure of road systems, cycle-ways and its own dedicated public transport services.

This development will transform the site between the Tyne Bridge and the Swing Bridge on the Gateshead Quayside. It is a split level scheme with restaurants and office space.

The design makes a substantial yet sensitive contribution to the composition of Gateshead Quayside, amongst landmarks such as BALTIC, The Sage and the iconic bridges. It has involved significant consultation with Gateshead Council and English Heritage.

Note that Cruddas Park now has its own Project Thread as : 81. Cruddas Park Refurbishment & Demolition | Newcastle | Various | U/C

Architect's Blurb:

The proposed new 60,000 sq ft Tesco store is just part of an exciting scheme to redevelop the whole of the Newcastle General Hospital site. The overall proposal is for a large mixed use development consisting of the store, a university research campus focusing specifically on health and ageing, along with associated community healthcare facilities.

A key design issue is the integration of the retail, university and healthcare elements to create a single comprehensive development. This will be achieved in part by the creation of a pedestrian route running north-south through the site linking all the proposed facilities. The south end will be enclosed with a glazed roof, while the north will open out into a wide, landscaped linear park terminating in a 'village square'.

West Road Fire Station Redevelopment:

The Council’s Executive is recommended to accept an offer for the 1.31 acre site from New Deal for Communities (Newcastle) Ltd and Groundwork South Tyneside & Newcastle to deliver a scheme for community benefit, following a 17-month marketing exercise.

The bold, imaginative scheme will be known as ‘The West Gate’ and will provide a community enterprise, training and leisure complex in an eco-friendly hi-tech premises with low carbon footprint which will be a focal point for the local community.

The planning application will be determined by autumn 2009 with rebuilding work completed in July 2011 and the building is expected to open in August 2011.

In between the two buildings is a landscaped courtyard with oriel windows that prevent overlooking and add visual interest. The Byker Bridge block is tall and brightly coloured, to create a gateway statement from the route from Byker Bridge into town. This building also protects the courtyard area and Stepney Bank building from the pollution and noise of the busy road. The Stepney Bank block is smaller and steps down towards the Ouseburn valley, with a material palette of dark brick, zinc and glass.

The former Luckies bar is part of plans to turn the whole of the end of St Mary’s Place into one large nightspot.

Premises which used to be Crown hairdressers, Paris Texas restaurant, Steel Wheels record shop, Northgate House and offices on St Mary’s Place will also be part of the pub, if planning permission and a licence are given.

JD Wetherspoon, which sealed a deal to buy up all the properties at the start of July, is looking for the green light to refurbish the interiors of the buildings, some of which are listed

Press Release from MGT Power -

Tyne REP will be one of the worlds largest renewable energy plants, providing enough carbon neutral electricity to power around 600,000 homes (295 MW). As it will operate base-load, it will produce in one year as much green electricity as the largest 1,000MW wind farm projects, and save 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted every year.

Tyne REP will bring substantial benefits to the region, representing an investment of over £500 million; the creation of 600 construction jobs; 150 on-site jobs; 300 - 400 indirect jobs and an annual spend of £30 million in the local economy.

52. Strawberry Place Masterplan | Newcastle | 29 fl | Pre-planning

Potential new 29-floor tower for Newcastle, to a site south of the football stadium. Design by Napper architects.
Napper were approached by St. James Park Football Club, (collaborating with Nexus and Newcastle City Council) to provide a mixed masterplan for an urban space south of St James Park known as Strawberry Place. The brief called for better connectivity and improved public realm ensuring better permeability between the newly masterplanned Science City and the city centre as well as providing a new commercial hub to the south of the football stadium.

The site layout proposes three main buildings fronting Gallowgate, including a landmark 29 storey tower, interconnected by a series of high level walkways to two smaller commercial blocks. The blocks configure to create a new square, sitting at the intersection of key routes through the city and contained by smaller scale buildings addressing Gallowgate, a bank of raked seating to the east and the refurbished metro station to the north and west. A media wall which has an aspect to the three main approaches to the square provides a central pedestrian focus suggesting a new city pedestrian meeting point.

PROPOSALS have now been submitted for the conversion of the former Co-op Department Store building in Newcastle City Centre into an hotel and associated leisure uses.

90% of the space is either let, or close to being let.

The Grade II-listed, six-storey Co-op building on Newgate Street, will be redeveloped to form a 231-bedroom hotel, restaurants, retail outlets and gym.

William Grafton, project director at Merchant Place, says the 150,000sqft redevelopment offers an “exceptional opportunity” to bring back to life one of the most famous buildings in central Newcastle.

The project has been designed by the Red Box Design Group, which was responsible for the award-winning conversion of the old Post Office Buildings in Newcastle about 10 years ago.

55. Tynemouth Station Restoration | Tynemouth | Various | U/C

Tynemouth Station, now Tynemouth Metro Station, opened in 1882 and is a grand Victorian station, renowned for its extensive and highly decorative iron canopies, by William Bell. It is a Grade II listed building, parts of which are very much still at risk.

Tynemouth Station with its beautiful wrought iron and glass canopy, originating from 1882, and in the early days it was respected and well maintained. It even won several prizes for being the best-kept station on the North Eastern Railway line.

For many years, as well as being a busy station on the Tyne & Wear Metro, the extensive areas of the old Victorian Station are used on Saturdays and Sundays, as a very popular and well attended indoor Antiques and Collectables market . . .

But, to either end of the station, the old Victorian arches are as shown in the first photo at the top of this page. and so there is a lot of work still to do to save those areas of the old station that have not yet been repaired.

Here are the detailed proposals . . .

So . . much to do yet, but a VERY deserving restoration, in my opinion

57. Central Hotel Bar Refurbishment | Gateshead | Completed

News this week that the Central Hotel at the Gateshead side of the Tyne Bridge is to be redeveloped. As many people know it's a great looking, grade II listed building that should be great when redeveloped. The Head of Steam group (The Cluny, Tilleys, etc) are taking it on. The work is set to cost £1.1m. Sorry I couldn't find a more recent image!! http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nort...up-central-hotel-in-gateahead-72703-24917561/[/QUOTE]

If you think that is an OLD photo . . . how about this one then??

and, here is a much more recent one . . .

also, here is the INSIDE, taken in 1997. Personally, I love these genuine old wooden pub interiors, my old favourite pub in the 1980s, The Burton House next to the old BBC building, used to have one just as good!

59. The Point | Gateshead | 9/6/5 Fl | Dormant

This thread is for discussion of UK Land Estate's The Point development in Gateshead. As it is connected to the Ochre Yards residential development we can also discuss that one too as it is still under protracted, phased construction. As for "The Point", I don't think construction has started.

Description from UK Land Estates:

The Point rises above Gateshead Quays overlooking the River Tyne's famous Quayside.

The Point offers contemporary design alongside stunning Edwardian buildings; setting new standards for the modern city centre businesses.

Only a short stroll away are some of the region's iconic tourist spots including the Sage, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and within 10 minutes you can be in either Gateshead or Newcastle city centre.

Plans include office, leisure and hotel accommodation set in spectacular surroundings; the commercial heart of a true urban village.

* 4/5 star hotel opportunity approx. 120 beds
* Approx 200,000 sq.ft of brand new Grade A office accommodation
* Bar/Restaurant opportunities of up to 12,000sqft

Edwardian structures
* True urban village providing the opportunity to Live, Work, Rest and Play
* External landscaping of the highest quality

60. Mouth of Ouseburn | Newcastle | 39m | 13fl | Proposed

There have been a number of proposals for this site, the below is the current one.

Oct 8 2007 by Peter Young, Newcastle Evening Chronicle

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a £25m waterfront flats, office and leisure complex on Newcastle Quayside are set to win city council backing.

Planning officials will recommend members of the development control committee support the scheme, at the mouth of the Ouseburn where it meets the Tyne, at a meeting on Friday, despite objections.

These include residents, a 1,300-name petition from customers of the nearby Free Trade pub and Star and Shadow cinema, Byker councillors Nick Kemp and Veronica Dunn, and members of the Ouseburn management board.

Council officials are backing the scheme which also has the broad support of English Heritage, Newcastle conservation advisory panel, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

The proposal by George Wimpey UK Ltd is for a 13-storey block with 89 apartments and cafe and gallery on the ground floor, a five to seven-storey office building with a restaurant and newsagent, a public square, and a 40-space underground car park.

Around 320 jobs would be created, plus 100 during construction, and if the go-ahead is given it will end a seven-year wrangle over the future of the site.

Objectors complain about the size and design which they say will obscure views of the Tyne, impact on the historic Ouseburn area and cause potential traffic problems.

Coun Kemp, who is chairman of Byker ward committee, is concerned about the size of the building and traffic and says there is already a huge number of vacant apartments on the Quayside.

In a report to councillors, Harvey Emms, the council’s head of planning and transportation, says that in his view the design does justice to what is a unique and remarkable setting.

“Given the prominence and sensitivity of the site and the considerable public interest, I suspect it is probably impossible to identify a scheme which would satisfy everybody’s aspirations or achieve unanimity,” said Mr Emms.

“In my view, the applicants and their architects deserve credit for learning from the previous unsatisfactory proposals and seeking to design a scheme which sits comfortably with its surroundings.”

Looks like this is set to be built then, i think it is a decent design but nothing extraordinary, glad that the site will finally be filled though. only the imperial quays plot to go and the quayside will be 'complete'.

I assume this proposal is still on the stocks, but has probably been delayed by the current 'slump'.

It would actually be quite interesting to see photos/visualisations of some of the previous proposals (may they yet still be revived?) as I seem to remember one was a very tall slim (and I thought quite impressive) building.

It was described as representing a "full stop" to the East Quayside area, at the point where it reached the Ouseburn.

BELOW are photos/CGIs, of 'the most famous' of the previous proposals for this site . .

2011/0860/01/CAC | Conservation Area Consent: Demolition of unlisted building | Strawberry House 4 Strawberry Place Newcastle upon Tyne

From the Design and Access Document :

The site is located at the junction of Strawberry Place & St James’ Street and has an area of approximately 0.06ha. It contains a brick-built, disused former sub-station building and is within the Leazes Conservation Area, to the north west of Newcastle city centre.

The site is bounded by St James’ Street to the south west, Strawberry Place to the south and the back lane serving the rear of St James’ Street to the east. The northern boundary is defined by the four storey brick-built gable end wall of Albion Buildings. Therefore, it has dual aspect to the south and the southwest.

62. South Shields Riverside (New Shore) | South Shields | Various | Completed

Masterplan for 35ha scheme includes 1300 homes and the UK's first 100% recycled park

Architect Studio Egret West has unveiled these images of a 35ha masterplan for South Shields riverside. The scheme, which will include five new neighbourhoods with over 1300 homes, will also create a waterfront park, New Shore.

The design connects the park with South Shields town centre via a community terrace that covers a six metre change in level. This terrace, which the architect describes as “like a giant oyster encrusted with barnacles” will be constructed using engineered fill from other large scale projects in the north east of England. This makes the park, the architect says, the first 100% recycled park in the UK.

63. Imperial Quay | Newcastle | 15 Fl | Dormant

Original Developer - AWG Ltd
Original Architect - Carey Jones Architects

I know the proposed building planned for this site (above) known as Imperial Quay (which is what I have named the thread for ease of identification) has I think been cancelled so the site is currently dormant but this is a very important development site and we should monitor what happens here.

This is one of the three major remaining “gaps” in East Quayside, with the other two being ’57 Quayside’ and the ‘entrance to the Ouseburn' plot, all three of which are important (in my view) if we are to achieve 'completion' of the East Quayside Streetscape.

The last mention of this development site on the old 'Projects Thread' was on December 10th last year when Gregstone wrote . . . "Known as Plot 12 or Imperial Quay and owned by One North East, Very little info or news on intentions or indeed why it has taken so long. I understand the CDC is keen to bring forward "Lower Ouseburn / East Quayside" as a priority area for redevelopment."

Last I heard was that One North East are supposed to be marketing the site.

I, personally, think that this major "gap" in East Quayside has a very detrimental impact on the overall appearence of the area.

Below is, out of interest, a bit of the history of the Imperial Quay project, leading up to the most recent news in 2007 . . .

August 2002 - The new proposal is described as the "final piece in the (East Quayside) Jigsaw" . . .

September 20th 2002 - The PROTESTS begin . . .

2007 - The protesters have won, we have a LOVELY undeveloped GAP on East Quayside, and One North East put the site back on the market . . .

64. Discovery Quarter | Newcastle | Various | Dormant

The specific project named "Discovery Quarter" may have failed (I believe) but this is still the best title I can think of to describe any proposed developments within the area in question.

I think this is an important area of the City Centre, requiring (and at one time nearly-getting) a great deal of attention, so I felt we should have this thread to monitor it.

My own particular sub-area-of-concern (within the Discovery Quarter) is that directly in front of the Discovery Museum, in between it and St James' Boulevard. The very scruffy "backs of buildings" (that were never meant to be seen like this) are now in a very prominent location, and 'blight' what could be a very impressive view from the Boulevard, at (or very near to) one of the major road entrances into the City Centre from the South.

Essentially, I mean this area here . . .

65. Forth Banks New Police Station | Newcastle | 5fl | U/C

Plans unveiled for new £37m police station
October 22nd 2010, by Adrian Pearson, Evening Chronicle

A NEW £37m police station is to be built in the centre of Newcastle.

Northumbria Police have revealed they are to build the new complex behind Newcastle Central Station.

The force’s police authority members have agreed to purchase a site at Forth Banks next to the Stephenson Quarter.

Network Rail currently owns the site but will be handed £5.5m for the land.

The total cost of the new building expected to be around £36.8m.

Northumbria Police currently own part of the Pilgrim Street station, shared with Newcastle magistrates, and all of the Market Street building.

Officers have been using Pilgrim Street since the 1930s and opened the Market Street office in the 1960s.

These will be put up for sale and the funds will help cover some of the cost of the new station, with spending chiefs expected to borrow some cash to help out.

The new site includes the Kings House building, which will be substantially upgraded, and an adjacent Grade II-listed warehouse building, which kept as part of the new station. A new building will be built to the rear of Kings House to link the two others. There will be more then 50 cells in the new building and a 24-hour reception.

66. Grey Street-Mosley Street-Cloth Market HOTEL (nightclub, restaurants & retail) | Newcastle | Various | Proposed

5-13 Grey Street

DAV Developments are proposing a conversion on Grey Street for a 55 bed hotel to run through from Grey Street, through Drury Lane and to include Balmbra's in Cloth Market.

The site comprises buildings at:
5-13 Grey Street
5-7 Drury Lane
6-8 Cloth Market (Balmbras Bar)

This Design, Access and Heritage Statement has been prepared by _space as part of a full planning and listed building consent application on behalf of DAV Developments Ltd. The application is for the proposed conversion and refurbishment of buildings located at 5-13 Grey Street, 5-7 Drury Lane and 6-8 Cloth Market (Balmbras Bar) into a leisure complex that includes a minimum four star hotel to Grey Street and Drury lane and a high quality bar to the Cloth Market and Drury Lane.
Planning Application with NCC under Ref 2011/0350/01/DET - see http://planningapplications.newcast...s.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=LHC7G9BSAP000

Certainly looks an interesting development and with recent discussions on Balmbas it is notable that the development promises a high quality bar.

Ryder Architecture have new design plans for a St James' Quarter for Newcastle (under Projects/Masterplanning)

This seems to encapsulate Citygate (phase 1), the pending Strawberry Place development (phase 2), and a new radical looking public realm between the two (phase 3).

They obviously have big plans for Phase 3, and the contract value is £125m

This thread has been created to discuss Phase 3 (as it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else, and it's a newly named quarter I've never heard of before).

70.Haven Point (New Pool and Leisure Complex) | South Shields | 2fl | Completed

South Shields to get new £15m swimming pool complex
BBC Newcastle News Website, 7th February 2010.

Plans for a £15m swimming pool complex on South Tyneside have been unveiled. South Tyneside Council said the pool, planned for the foreshore area of South Shields, would help to attract more tourists to the seaside town.

A detailed planning application is due to be lodged in the Spring and building work expected to start in September.

Tracey Dixon, South Tyneside Council's lead member for culture and wellbeing, said: "The new pool on the South Shields foreshore will have state-of-the art design and technology features. "It will be designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users and making it a truly inclusive building for all members of the community and visitors to the area.

"It is an investment for the future and the building will be designed to ensure it is sustainable and energy efficient. "It will also make our stunning seafront even more attractive for visitors who will have even more reason to return to South Tyneside for holidays and visits whatever the weather."

The complex will include a 25m swimming pool with spectator seating, fitness suite and an outdoor performance area, as well as hosting school swimming groups. It is also hoped the pool will be used to host competition swimming events.

Large new JD Wetherspoons Lloyds No 1 bar that was formerly known as The Sports Cafe. The bar has been transformed and now has 3 floors with a bar on each level.

The ground floor bar is accessed directly from the main entrance and there is a long bar to the left hand side. There are plenty of tables and chairs on all floors for diners. The upper levels can be accessed by a large staircase near the main entrance. Regular music is on play at most times with a dance floor at the rear of the ground floor and on the upper levels.

There are several widescreen TV's showing videos. The bar will be a very popular addition to the Central Station area and will appeal to a mixed clientele of students, locals, business crowd and tourists. It shouold be very busy at all times especially at the weekend and on Thursday Curry night. There is a small outside seating area open until 6pm that is used for smoking.

Disabled access is excellent with a designated disabled toilet on the ground floor.

This £74m residential scheme on the former site of Gateshead College on Durham Road is being developed by Grainger PLC. It looks like it has the potential to be something quite special, with it being designed by none other than recent Stirling Prize winners Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, the first practice to win the Stirling for a residential scheme. It includes family homes and apartments in a sensitively landscaped setting.

Employment boost as college site plan revealed
September 27th 2007, by Nick Whitten, Evening Chronicle

MORE than 150 jobs will be created through the redevelopment of a Tyneside college site. A mix of family homes and flats, complemented by a neighbourhood shop, has been designed to herald a new community on the site of Gateshead College.

Our exclusive fly-through pictures, which can be seen at www.chroniclelive.co.uk, reveal the plans.

Newcastle developer Grainger plc, which bought the 10-acre site on Durham Road earlier this year, is holding a public exhibition of the plans today.

Two public consultation days have already been held, but the new development has attracted so much local interest that Grainger has decided to hold a third. Visitors will be able to see the plans in more detail and hear how the scheme will fit into the site’s conservation area status. They will also have a chance to make suggestions so these can be incorporated while the proposed scheme is still on the drawing board – and help to choose a name for the site.

Nicola Osborne, Grainger’s director of development, said: “We’ve been delighted by the response to our invitation for local people to get involved with our vision for the Gateshead site. “We understand how much value local residents can add and genuinely want to give every opportunity to hear their views about the proposals, along with any ideas and suggestions they might have.” “When we first bought the site we said it deserved a very special treatment, and, hopefully, that’s exactly what we’ve come up with". “We want to turn it into one of the most sought-after addresses in the region and believe buyers of all ages will be attracted by the location and the pleasant, leafy setting.”

The college moves next April to new premises at the Baltic Business Quarter.

Old Newcastle Project

This exciting project focuses on Newcastle’s social, cultural and creative heritage using the ancient Black Gate as a new portal to the City’s rich history, culture and character.

Heritage Lottery Funding has been secured to create an accessible, heritage-led education and interpretation centre in the vacant and closed Black Gate, transforming its current lifeless and substantially ignored presence into a hub of heritage activity that will be open and available to the entire community and visitors from near and far. The Black Gate will combine with medieval neighbours, the Castle Keep and St. Nicholas Cathedral to provide an outstanding and dynamic heritage asset that will tell the story of the remarkable history of the City and the ingenuity of countless generations of its inhabitants.

From the Planning Statement:

Lambert Smith Hampton has been appointed by Crosslane Student Living to prepare a planning application for the redevelopment of the existing buildings on the F1 Car Sales and Servicing site for 159 student bedspaces, being; 121 study rooms; 6 assisted rooms; 30 studios and 2 assisted studios a a larger property and ancillary accommodation.

The application site consists of regularly shaped land and buildings of the existing Formula 1 Car Showroom and servicing buildings and forecourt situated on Albert Street in the Shieldfield area of Newcastle.
The buildings are of a modern utilitarian appearance commiserate with their use. The site is bound to the south by a neighbouring building, currently in office use, to the north is Albert Road and new build student accommodation is situated to the east and west.

The planning application proposes the demolition of the entire existing building on the site replacing them with a new student accommodation building of five floors (plus ground floor) providing 159 student bedspaces. The bedspaces are made up of 8 accessible bedrooms and an overall mix of 20& studio bedrooms and 8-% cluster bedrooms.

As detailed in the accompanying design and access statement the cues for the height, scale, massing and character of the building are taken from those in the immediate vicinity of the site. The proposed height is similar to that of the recently completed student accommodation building to the west of the application site. The proposed materials are also inkeeping with that building.

Status - insufficient fee

From the Planning Documents of that application:-

An external electrical substation has been added to the design. This change is in response to comments from Northern Powergrid which is unwilling to terminate the two incoming electrical supplies from Gateshead East Primary East Substation into a high voltage (HV) switchpanel that would be owned by Gateshead Council. There is insufficient space within the Energy Centre as permitted to locate the revised configuration of the Northern Powergrid and Private Wire HV switchpanels. Northern Powergrid requires a dedicated plantroom and HV switchpanel to be located within 25m of the Energy Centre.

The Design & Access Statement confirms this as student accommodation.

This design and access statement (DAS) has been prepared in support of a full plans submission in association with the conversion of Aidan House from vacant office accommodation to student accommodation.

The scheme submitted is largely a refurbishment of an existing building and as such the proposed design elements limited to refreshing and overcladding of the existing structure, with elements being replaced and or upgraded as required by the technical requirements of the building regulations and change of use.

148. White Hart Yard Development (Restaurants and Bars) | Newcastle | Various | Proposed

Redevelopment of White Hart Yard Site

Summary from NCJ

Entertainment group Ladhar Leisure has unveiled details of a raft of North East developments which are set to create up to 130 jobs as part of a major New Year growth strategy.

The owner of several regional venues – including Newcastle Quayside’s Hop and Cleaver and Redhouse – plans to convert the Lounge opposite Central Station into a contemporary Neapolitan-inspired pizza and cocktail offering. Around 30 jobs will be created in the project, which will be called Central Oven and Shaker once open.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the much-talked about White Hart Yard scheme, bringing exciting new concepts in food and drink to the Grey Street scene will also start in 2016. Detailed plans are in the process of being submitted and, subject to permission, the initial phase should be opened at Easter, when it anticipated some 40 full-time and up to 60 part-time jobs will be created.

Meanwhile, a rebranding exercise is also poised to take place in 2016, with Ladhar Leisure changing its name to Crafted Projects to fit the company’s profile of developing contemporary destinations for food, craft ales and cocktails.

The announcements come as the firm’s directors unveil a new look for its High Bridge venue Pleased to Meet You, which has undergone a £500,000 expansion. Pleased To Meet You’s continued success has driven Ladhar Leisure to add extensive additional seating to the existing venue, creating a relaxed dedicated dining area with an additional bar, luxury events space, private dining facilities and the creation of an experimental cocktail club – Viceroy – discreetly hidden in the basement. It has involved a major refurbishment and renovation having expanded into two adjacent shop units, a move which has also created 25 jobs. Renowned North East chef Dave Kennedy joined the group earlier this year and has primarily been working on some amazing food concepts.

151. World Wheel Company "Whey Aye" WHEEL at Spillers Wharf | Newcastle | Proposed

Team assembled for project to build Europe’s biggest observation wheel in Newcastle

The company behind a project to build Europe’s tallest observation wheel in Newcastle has appointed an advisory team to bring the scheme to fruition.
Developer World Wheel Company will build the wheel, nicknamed ‘The Whey Aye’, on the Quayside with the help of nine companies from across the North East and Yorkshire. Appointed to the development are communications agency SHA, commercial law firm Muckle, international design practice Ryder Architecture and retail property consultants @Retail, all headquartered in Newcastle.

Subject to planning approval, the observation wheel will stand almost 460 ft high – making it 16 ft taller than the iconic London Eye. Forecasts suggest it could see over £100m invested in the city and help create up to 550 jobs.
The Whey Aye would anchor a 344,500 sq ft development that includes a new food and beverage destination; a ‘world-leading’ visitor attraction; a family entertainment centre; and a multi-purpose play and sports complex with covered five-a-side pitches, tennis courts and a virtual golf club. If approved, the entire development is expected to take 18 to 24 months to build.

A detailed planning application for the wheel and visitor attractions will be submitted to Newcastle City Council later this year.

152. WINDMILL HILLS - Restoration and conversion of former school to Church of Scientology | Gateshead | Proposed

From Robert Cooper on the BBC News Tyne & Wear website on 19/08/14

EXTRACTS

The Windmill Hills former school and care home was supposed to be a regional centre for Scientology

The Church of Scientology, famous for its Hollywood celebrity followers, once hailed its new home in north-east England as a centre for spiritual enlightenment. Several years on, the building lies empty and is a haven for squatters and drug users. So will it ever open?

The Windmill Hills former school and care home in Gateshead looks like the ideal setting for a ghost story.

Damp and derelict, the spooky Victorian day school sits at the mercy of vandals, squatters and the elements.

AND

The Windmill Hills building was bought for £1.5m in 2007 by Richard Pickles, who the church described as "one of our parishioners".

He is listed as a director of a dormant company called ATD CCTV Ltd and was formerly a director of a company in East Grinstead in West Sussex, where the Church of Scientology has a large UK base.

AND

The building was transferred to the church in 2009 but remains unused. The church has refused to give a renovation timescale or explain how much this would cost.

"The buildings we are opening are of high quality and perfectly renovated," said Mr Wilson. "To achieve this standard requires a lot of planning, time and funds. But we are making excellent progress."

Not everyone is convinced. The building - on the edge of a park in central Gateshead - is regarded by many as a prominent eyesore.

"We have repeatedly pressed the owners to make repairs and clarify the long-term future of the site," said Gateshead Council's head of development and public protections, Anneliese Hutchinson.

"We are clear that further works are required in the short term to improve the condition of the building."

She said the council was "exploring the options available" to reach a solution. Councils can require owners to carry out repairs to listed buildings, or undertake works themselves and bill the owner.

They also have the power to make a compulsory purchase, but only if they have a plan to secure the building's long-term future.
