Congress feuds to cost the coast
DC | Gururaj. A. Paniyadi | 10 hours 50 min ago

Mangalore: Differences among leaders and confusion over selection of candidates for next month’s elections to the Legislative Assembly could mar the prospects of Congress in the coastal belt.

Though there was a strong wave in favour of the Congress during the recent elections to urban local bodies (ULBs), partymen are worried that heartburn among unsuccessful ticket aspirants could dampen the prospects of the party in constituencies such as Mangalore City South, Mangalore City North, Kaup, Karwar, Sirsi and Kumta. While some have rebelled, others have chosen to abstain from electioneering. Besides, none of the star campaigners has toured coastal districts, leaving the task to local leaders such as Oscar Fernandes and B Janardhan Poojary.

Congress workers rued the fact that the party has failed to encash issues such as alleged involvement of former minister Krishna Palemar in porngate scam, attack on minorities and incidents of moral policing. They are also unhappy about selection of candidates.

For example, in Mangalore City North, despite senior leaders like Janardhan Poojary backing Vijay Kumar Shetty (who lost by about 3,500 votes in 2004), the party picked Mohiyuddin Bava (who lost to Palemar with a margin of about 16,000 votes in 2008). It has triggered differences between Oscar Fernandes and Janardhan Poojary.

Similarly in Kaup, Vinay Kumar Sorake has been fielded despite oppositing from local leaders including Member of Parliament Jayaprakash Hegde. Sources in the party alleged that rivals of Oscar Fernandes were instrumental in fielding Sorake. "M A Gafoor, a close aide of Oscar Fernandes was in the race here, but the leader’s adversaries ensured that ticket was not given to him," a senior leader added.

In constituencies like Kumta, Karwar and Sirsi, party denied tickets to candidates with high winnability factor, forcing them to either migrate to other parties or contest as independents. In Sirsi, the Congress has fielded Deepak Honnavar though he has a criminal background.

"Had our party fielded winning candidates, we would have won atleast five out of six constituencies. But some of our district leaders pressurized the party to field those close to them," a leader of Karwar said.

DHANANJAY KUMAR ATTRACTS IRE OF FELLOW PARTYMEN FOR REMARKS AGAINST ADVANI
Bangalore, Apr. 27- Senior KJP leader K.H. Srinivas has come down heavily on fellow partyman V. Dhananjay Kumar for making allegations against senior BJP leader L.K. Advani.

Addressing a press meet here yesterday, Srinivas said Dhananjay Kumar’s outburst against Advani will have an adverse impact on KJP.

Party President B.S. Yeddyurappa has expressed regret for Dhananjay’s remarks, which were totally unwarranted, he said.

Asking Dhananjay Kumar to change his attitude, Srinivas said those in a responsible position should not make such remarks which were in poor taste.

Claiming that Dhananjay’s remarks were in a way concerned with the party, Srinivas said there was no need for giving clarification to such remarks and added that Yeddyurappa has directed partymen not to make any irrelevant remarks in future.

Karnataka polls: Krishna attacks Congress candidate selection process

PTI | Apr 27, 2013, 04.10 PM IST

BANGALORE: Making no secret that he is hurt, former Union minister and senior Congress leader S M Krishna on Saturday attacked the candidate-selection process in his party for the Karnataka assembly elections.

At a meet-the-press programme, organised by the Press Club of Bangalore and Bangalore Reporters' Guild, Krishna said he had taken active part in candidates selection process since 1972, adding that the selection panel then used to have 15-16 members who used to engage in serious discussions.

He said the panel this time had close to 60 members — including himself — which he termed as "unwieldy".

"I was very surprised to see the list (with nearly 60 names). Can we finalize candidates with such a big panel? That's why I did not go to the (panel's) meeting," Krishna said. "It (the big list) left me cold."

Asked if the Congress has failed to encash the "fixed deposit" (good work done by him when he was the chief minister between 1999-2004), he said, "It's cleverness, intelligence and political astuteness to reap the dividends of good work done by erstwhile leaders. Those who say it's not required, it's their loss. It's not a loss to those who earned it."

The former chief minister refused to predict which party would come to power.

"It's difficult to expect people's verdict. People don't share secret (as to whom they will vote). Sometimes, polls go wrong because people who are approached give misleading information," he said.

Rebels are headache in Mandya and Bellary .....

Congress cant turn there chances in to fruits :) ha ha ha

they will loose some winning seats in bellary ....for bjp and BSR .

and they will loose there winning seats to jds in Mandya .(smk is rejecting to go to mandya)
Correct, I was just watching his press conference in Suvarna 24x7, He was clearly not willing to go back to mandya and he said he is sticking to Bengaluru now, indirectly telling (referring Mr Ambi) there are very strong congress people there to get victories to Congress. Think this time its clean sweep for JDS in Mandya.

The Congress party in particular lost a great chance in the first round of 177 tickets where Vokkaliga candidates were given a short shrift and even senior leader SM Krishna got terribly upset. Deve Gowda, on the other hand, has always been harping on Vokkaliga pride and the cauveruy issue which are so emotional in nature and good enough to make a major chunk of the Vokkaliga community rally behind him. With its second and third list, the Congress also lost of considerable amount of advantage both in the coastal Karnataka as well as Bellary.
Even intelligence sources confirm that the JD(S), even by the most conservative estimates, would be in a position to get at least 40 odd seats in the even of a fractured verdict in karnataka this time. If that happens, then it is bad news for Congress because Deve Gowda has an elephantine memory and even today he keeps harping how the then Congress President Sitraram Kesri called him a “ Nikamma’ and brought down his government at the Centre.
JD(S) would not like to go in for any post-poll coalition after the 2004 experience and that is why BJP is still hopeful of not facing a complete route in Karnataka even this time around. There have been some informal understandings between the two even after ULB polls at 23 places. The same equation is likely to continue even after the Assembly polls where a coalation government of BJP and JD(S) could be a distinct possibility in Karnataka yet again.
In addition, JD(S) has been quick in grabbing Congress rebels and even poached leaders like A Krishnappa and Vasant Salian, the moment they were denied ticket by the Congress party. The Congress party tally appears to be lesser by at least seats with these rebels and independents in the fary and would like to bring them into its own fold to swell its number.
Another reason for the JD(S) not touching the Congress aparty with a barged pole is that Deve Gowda is eying at the next Parliamentary elections where all the cards at the moment seem to be in the favour of BJP led NDA government.
Even a few senior Congress leaders now admit in private that the Congress party appears to have lot the initial advantage because of bungling in ticket distribution, alienation of both Lingayats and Vokkaligas as well as the absence of a tall leader capable of carrying all section together.
“ Now, reaching 100 mark figure looks a bit tough and at the end of the day, the Congress party may realize that it would be forced to sit in the opposition all over again because it would not have sufficient numbers “ quipped a senior Congress leader.:bash:
So, in all probability, the verdict of this round of Assembly polls would be more or less like the repeat of 2004 where the JD(S) would emerge as the Kingmaker and keep the congress out of power. Deve Gowda may not have been educated in Harvard or Wharton but still seems to be the most ardent follower of Otto Von Bismarck who said that” politics is the art of the possible” and even hypothesis and prognosis combined together, sometimes becomes’ synthesis.”. It remains to be seen on 8th may if his wish comes true yet again or not..
