OldNews:THIRU BAALU REVIEWS ROAD PROJECTS IN TAMIL NADU

THIRU BAALU REVIEWS ROAD PROJECTS IN TAMIL NADU Wednesday, January 02, 2008
source:http://trbaalu.nic.in/minister/press/2008/Jan08/Jan0208.htm
The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu reviewed here today the progress of projects being implemented by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the state of Tamil Nadu. There are 31 projects costing Rs. 9650 crore presently in progress covering a length of 1788 km. The projects are in the Hosur-Kaniakumari section of North South corridors, between Tindivanam and Trichy, Trichy and Didigul, Trichy and Madurai, Karur and Coimbatore, Coimbator and Mettupalayam, Salem and Kerala border. In addition other four laning projects between Madurai and Tuticorin, Pondichery and Tindivanam, Thanjavur and Trichy, Trichy and Karur, and Salem and Ulundurpet have also been undertaken. In and around Chennai city two projects, viz. Chennai bypass and improvement of access to Golden Quadrilateral by providing free flow facilities are also under construction.

Of the 31 projects, 16 projects are expected to be completed during the calendar year 2008. Two of these 16 projects are expected to be completed by July 2008 (Thumipadi-Salem and Lalapet ROB), 3 (on North South corridor) by November 2008 and 11 (6 on North South corridor, 4 between Trichy and Madurai and 1 in Chennai city) by December 2008. The remaining 15 projects are likely to spill over to calendar year 2009, of which 6 will be completed during the first quarter itself. The remaining 9 projects will spill beyond March 2009.

The Minister impressed upon NHAI officials and the Consultants supervising the projects to monitor the projects very closely and ensure that not only the projects are completed as per the targets fixed in the review, but sincere efforts are made by the contractors to complete the projects ahead of schedule.

The Minister noted that the projects suffered some setbacks on account of heavy rains causing the quarries becoming inaccessible and the efforts being concentrated on restoration work rather than the main work. The works in Chennai city projects which were in critical stage suffered badly due to rains as well as certain unforeseen circumstances like emergence of certain leaking pipelines. Now that the rains are over, he urged all concerned to take up the work in the right earnest.

OldNews:Work on four-laning of the Tindivanam-Tiruchi section completed by September

http://www.hindu.com/2008/04/11/stories/2008041161770300.htm
TIRUCHI: Work on four-laning of the Tindivanam-Tiruchi section of the National Highway-45 would be completed by September, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu said.

Addressing presspersons here after inspecting the work currently on a stretch of 204 km between Tindivanam and Tiruchi on Thursday, Mr. Baalu said that the work would be completed well ahead of June next year, the schedule fixed earlier.

Demands conceded

Mr. Baalu, who earlier interacted with the villagers en route, said that he had conceded on the spot local residents’ pleas for foot overbridges at a couple of places -- Jakkampettai near Tindivanam and Janakiupuram near Villupuram.

The cost of the bridges would be included in the project being implemented at an outlay of Rs. 1,260 crore.

Mr. Baalu said that the stretch accounted for four bypasses; 12 grade separators, fly-overs and vehicular under-passes; 12 pedestrian underpasses; nine railway overbridges; 13 major bridges and 44 minor bridges.

70 per cent completed

Pointing out that the work has been executed at a fast phase, he said that about 70 per cent of the project had been completed so far.

“It had been executed to my satisfaction and I had requested the constructors to keep up the pace,” he said.

The Union Minister said that the Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway would not be closed to traffic on any account. There would be no alteration in the alignment notified for the four-laning of Tiruchi-Karur sector.

Mr. Baalu, accompanied by the top NHAI and district officials, also inspected the progress of the flyover work at Mannarpuram in the city.

Earlier, accompanied by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice K. Venkatapathy and Rajya Sabha member N. Siva, he inspected the ongoing works between Tindivanam and Tiruchi.

Union Minister warns contractors for unreasonable delay in Road Works

The Union Minister for Highways, Road Transport and Shipping T.R. Baalu has warned contractors that if found guilty of unreasonable delay in executing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) road works, they would be blacklisted.

Not only would the particular work be withdrawn from them but also other road sector projects they are executing elsewhere in the nation taken away from them, he cautioned them. No new projects would be given to them for sure, he added.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the construction of the Road Over Bridge at Lalapet near here on Saturday, the Minister, however, conceded that there was acute shortage of trained or skilled labour force as many huge projects were progressing simultaneously in various regions in particular in Tamil Nadu. For instance, for the particular Lalapet ROB project that has seen several time schedule over runs, the Minister said that for expeditious completion of the project, skilled workers were being brought from West Bengal. Once they land here the work would gather pace.

The Lalapet ROB would be 2.689 metres long including 645 metres of elevated carriage way stretch. Of the total 18 spans, only six remain to be completed. While one span would be completed in May, three spans would be erected in June and the remaining two in July.

Mr. Baalu said that the civil works would be fully completed by July and the ROB would be ready for inauguration by August.

He expressed confidence that there would be no further hold-ups in the construction of the much-delayed ROB would see inauguration positively in August.

The Minister exuded optimism that the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project would become a reality soon. He hoped that the Supreme Court, which is seized of the matter, would deliver a “good verdict” and that was the “expectation of the people of the State, the Chief Minister and the allied party leaders.”

Chief General Manager, NHAI, Ashok Wasson, Project Directors M. Thangamani (Karur) and K. Viswanathan (Tiruchi), Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation General Manager Muthusamy, Project Coordinator Rangarajan, MLAs R. Manikkam (Kulithalai) and P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram), former MLA Vasuki Murugesan, Kulithalai Municipal Chairman A. Amuthavel, and others were present.

Preliminary works underway for widening NH-47

Crossposting from CBE thread
Coimbatore: The 82-km-long National Highway-47 from Chengapalli to Walayar will be widened into six lane. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is in the process of receiving public opinion on issues relating to land acquisition and the need for bypass roads.

At present there are plans for bypass roads at Perumanallur, Avanashi, Karumathampatti and KG Chavadi.

The total outlay for the project was likely to be around Rs. 900 crore to Rs 1,000 crore.

The NH-47 connects Coimbatore with Tirupur, Erode, Salem besides Chennai and Bangalore.

It accounts for heavy traffic and considering the increasing number of accidents, there was pertinent need to widen this road. The authorities propose to have flyovers at the point of commencement of the L&T bypass road at Neelambur and at the end of the bypass road at Madukkarai.

In addition, there would be flyovers where the bypass road cuts across the NH-67 (Tiruchi Road) and NH-209 (Pollachi Road).

Works are underway for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The Ministry is yet to decide on whether the work should be given to a a private infrastructure service provider on a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) basis.

Authorities have planned to make the road from Chengapalli to Neelambur into a six lane road while the bypass road and the stretch from Madukkarai to Walayar four-lane. Authorities expect the preliminary works to get over in four to six months and the project execution time would be around 30 months
