All set for grand water park

The state government has approved the blueprint for a RM250mil project to develop a strategic area near the Sarawak-Brunei border into an international water theme park.

The developer — Miri Housing Group of Companies — has received the greenlight from state authorities to go ahead with the recreational park project.

Group executive chairman Datuk Lau Siu Wai said the model for the project had also been approved by the state.

“This water park will be the biggest of its kind in East Malaysia. It will measure a total size of 43ha — a combined size of 107 football fields,” Lau said at a press conference here yesterday.

“It will have a 35ha man-made lake with a man-made island in the middle.

“The park will have an international-standard hotel with 250 rooms, a shopping mall with at least 300 shops, a recreational forest featuring unique plants, trees and herbs found in Sara-wak, facilities for water sports, a water ride and other unique features.

“The theme park will be very eco-friendly, constructed in such a way that we will incorporate a lot of nature into it.

“At any one time, it can accommodate at least 6,000 visitors.

“The design is based on a com-bination of ideas taken from our visits to theme parks in Kuala Lumpur, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and other countries,” he said.

Lau said the project site was located not far from Senadin residential estate, less than 15 minutes from the Sarawak-Brunei border checkpoint in the Kuala Baram district, some 30km north of here.

He said he had always dreamt of building such a landmark that would place Miri on the world tourism map.

Construction work would start in July, Lau said, adding that the park was expected to operate full-scale within two and a half years.

“Thousands of visitors from Brunei come here every weekend for shopping.

“Imagine the number of people entering on a daily basis once we have such an international-standard playground located so near the border,” he said.

“With GSC Bintang Megamall, GSC now has a total of 27 GSC cinemas and 228 screens nationwide including 93 digital halls.

GSC chain will be fully digital by 2014 as we continue to convert our current 35mm projectors to digital ones. All new GSC cinemas will be in digital from this year onwards,” said Koh at the launch of the GSC Bintang Megamall yesterday.

Koh added GSC Bintang Megamall which was built at a cost of RM17.5 million, has a total seating capacity of 1,010 seats to cater for Miri community and beyond. It is located at the fourth Floor of the shopping complex.

It also provides online ticketing facility for Internet and mobile purchases as well as GSC e-voucher facility for corporate loyalty programmes and promotion.

GSC according to Koh also planned to open its second cinema in Sarawak, a 10 screen GSC City One Mall, Kuching before the end of first quarter 2013, followed by a 10-screen GSC Palm Mall, Seremban and 11-screen GSC Nu Sentral, KL before the year end.

For 2014 it has already signed for GSC 101 City Mall, Putrajaya and GSC Aman Central, Kedah.

In conjunction with the new cinema opening, GSC Bintang Megamall patrons will enjoy complimentary ‘Wizard of Oz” multi-purpose pouch with each purchase of GSC combo 3 (while stock last) and 1,000 ‘Buy 2 Free 1’ vouchers with every two tickets purchased at the ticketing counter.
Movies shown this weekend will have special movie character appearances such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘G.I Joe Ninja’, balloon giveaway, ‘G.I Joe’ Xbox game and movie themed block puzzle games.

Mirians can continue to stand tall – Lau
Posted on February 8, 2013, Friday

MIRI: Mirians can continue to stand tall and be proud that it had achieved many firsts not just for the city, but also for Sarawak and Malaysia.

The executive chairman of Miri Housing Group of Companies Dato Lau Siu Wai said the opening of the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) at Bintang Megamall yesterday was among Miri’s achievements.

According to Lau, the setting up of the cinema was in line with the overall development of Miri, especially in the economic and tourism sectors, which were the two major sectors greatly needed to accelerate the city’s development.

As for his companies, Lau said among the efforts taken were the setting up of the Bintang Megamall which had Parkson as its anchor tenant and the development of the Water Theme Park at Senadin.

It will not only have commercial and recreational facilities but also Tenby International School and a university to enhance Senadin’s position in becoming an educational hub.

Currently, Senadin area has many educational institutions including Curtin University and the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri.

He said the Tenby School will start its operation at the theme park by September this year, while the whole project is expected to be ready in about three years’ time.

“As promised by Irving Chee during breakfast this morning, the park will also have GSC facilities,” adding that it augured well for the development of Miri.

He thanked GSC Sdn Bhd for making the GSC Bintang Megamall a reality.
