Population register work to begin by next week
The massive exercise of collecting National Population Register (NPR) details from the residents of the four southern districts will commence in the first week of August, Director of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu, S. Gopalakrishnan has said.
Mr. Gopalakrishnan was here on Wednesday to address the revenue and the senior officials of the local bodies on the things to be scrupulously followed during the exercise to be started from August first week onwards.
After adequate awareness is created among the residents through repeated publicity measures on the necessity for providing details for creating NPR, the residents will be asked to come to a particular point (like the polling stations) where their basic identity details such as name, address, date of birth, photographs and other personal details etc. would be collected and scanning of their biometric identity that includes fingerprints and iris would be done.
All these information would go into the NPR that would facilitate the issue of chip-enabled Resident Identity Card with the Aadhar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
The residents having ration cards should be asked to mention their ration card numbers, while the fact could be recorded and the NPR details collected in the cases of those who do not possess ration cards.
In Tamil Nadu, the biometric details of 60 lakh persons had been collected and the task would commence in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Viruudhunagar districts from August first week onwards so that the exercise could be completed before December-end.
Though this operation is completed in the first phase, a permanent data collection centre will be established in every taluk so that the updation of the existing database will be possible.
The data collected from the public would be shared with Tamil Nadu Government’s Civil Supplies Department so that it would lead to the distribution of electronically-devised ration cards that would completely phase out the bogus cards, Mr. Gopalakrishnan informed.
District Collector R. Selvaraj and District Revenue Officer P. Umamaheshwari were present at the meet.
Tuticorin
Earlier, holding a review meeting with officials in Tuticorin, he said that it was mandatory for all people above five years of age to the Resident Identity cards. Family cards would be replaced by smart cards in 2013, he said and added that acknowledgement slips, which were provided to every individual during the census taken in June and July -2010, would certify them to be eligible for availing this benefit. For those left out during that census programme, the data would be taken during the next camp.
This would not only help in revealing identities of persons but they could also avail all welfare schemes of the Central and State governments. Those who have already registered for Adhar cards should again register for availing the Resident Identity Cards, he said.
Collector Ashish Kumar and Commissioner of Tuticorin Corporation, S. Madhumathi attended.
