I wonder if anyone could help me out a little bit. I am planning (with almost a 100% certainty) to take the Moscow-Beijing train next year. I did a bit of research and it seems to be absolutely not a problem for me. I speak Russian and have fairly good understanding of the culture in general which I suppose should reduce any stress despite being a foreigner. All in all the technical side of taking the train should not be an issue in any way.

However there are a couple of things I would like to figure out:

- Which is the best mobile network (2G GSM. I wouldn't care much about 3G coverage). Are there any up to date maps of coverage of different operators in Russia? Just wonder what is the best option for the Trans-Siberian route in order to get connected to the Internet at least occasionally?

- Safety on the train. I have heard stories of people loosing their belongings or, even worse, money/documents while sleeping. I am aware that in most cases such stories are completely blown out of proportion and have no much in common with reality (as I have experienced myself) but it may happen nonetheless and I wonder how actually safe/dangerous it is to travel on the Trans Siberian?

This is the kind of trip I am planning to make: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8524/8562624163_8b73ae52d0_o.png

Are going to do this alone or with friends?
Anyway. here some common tips:

When using 3rd class, always try to book in advance to get perpendicular lower bench (at least 1 per company) - they have a locker, secured by you own weight, so there is no way to get your belongings unless throwing you of your bench entirely

For 1st/2nd class - use extra lock in upper left corner of the door when sleeping.

Sposibo Xan. That helps alot regarding my safety concerns. Given my size I don't think anyone would try to throw me out of bed. :D

I will try to arrange to go with some friends but if no success I would do alone anyway.

Also, I have checked some websites and only saw 2nd or 1st class options for bookings. I'm not 100% sure which is which but I suppose 1st class means a little room (kupe) for only two persons while 2nd is the same but for 4 persons and 3rd class a semi-open kupe (platzkart)?

I guess I'd have to go for 1st or 2nd class just to ensure more privacy and chances of having more decent sleep.

There is one more thing I was wondering. What the standard Moscow-Beijing trains look like? There is a variety of images and videos but most are rather old and I'm not sure whether it's the same today. Are they renovated and have contemporary equipment like air-conditioning, power sockets and good noise insulation or are they the pretty much what it used to be back in the Soviet times? I can still remember some of my train journeys in early 1990s (or even very late 80's) and I somewhat miss that atmosphere and environment.

Your suppositions are OK. I did it 2 years ago, we went for Kupe (2nd class)
and found it excellent. You won't find airco on all trains, just on the best
ones. And not, unfortunately, on the Moscow-UB-Beijing train whose cars
are provided by the chinese, and still as they were in the soviet era. The
positive aspect of it is that you can open the windows, which beats all
airco if you ask me. There were a few power sockets in the gangway but
none in the compartments.

The Gazprom railway :)
It's amazing how money makes people build things even on such hard conditions.

Yes but for the time being, the rail line still arrives on the wrong side of the
Lena river, right ? Iakutsk inhabitants must cross the water in order to get
to the trains... You can cross on the ice in winter, by boat in summer, but
there are those few months in between where the river cannot be traversed
at all. How is this being sorted out ? Will there be a bridge, a tunnel, or what ?

Really the main objective of the railway transportation of the goods and not passengers . It will push the whole region and will facilitate the export of natural riches along these 1250 km . And there-timber ,coal ,gold ,marble and granite and other

Ironically, this disaster are caused by technological works for installing extra mainline track for increasing capacity...
Bat doing so at Friday evening is a really dumb idea. :eek:hno:
