New tower to call time on the City Pride pub?

By John Hill on April 24, 2008 9:00 AM

IT could soon be last orders for the City Pride pub.

The Westferry Road haunt looks set to make way for a flagship tower, with a hotel, apartments and retail space.

Developer Glenkerrin has plans for a large building on the site after snapping up the prime development land for a reported £32million. But it remains tight-lipped on when it hopes to call time on the watering hole.

It has been suggested that Glenkerrin is considering a building rising as high as 55-storeys, with a five-storey hotel and 400 apartments.

The Irish company has already appointed world-renowned architect Foster and Partners to look into options for the site, which is just one of a cluster of proposed high-rise buildings on the western end of the Island.

i would be happy to see a building just like the landmark go there.
i think i would like the public realm to be dealt with better than what's along marsh wall- no tarmac/ crap tile roads/ crap tile (the redish things) pavements and no concrete curbs.
stone paving flags, granite curbs and so on should be laid.
maybe i'm just being spoilt living in manchester with it's high quality modern public realms that seem to stretch as far as the eye can see. ;)
that said, the quay area here is just as bland..

Developers reveal plans for City Pride site
JOHN HYDE
24 June 2008

THIS is the first glimpse of a landmark development that will transform a Docklands pub site.

Developer Glenkerrin wants to build a 63-storey state-of-the-art residential tower on the site of the City Pride in Westferry Road.

The proposal is for 410 residential units, including eight luxury penthouses, rising above a 200-bedroom five-star hotel.

But the sheer scale of the development, designed by architect Foster and Partners, is sure to upset people living nearby who will see their view virtually wiped out.

They will have their say via the development's website and through a series of public exhibitions being held next week.

Ray Grehan, chief executive, said: "Glenkerrin prides itself in building developments of the highest quality.

"We have taken this ethos to the next level with The Pride development, which will be a world class major iconic addition to the Docklands skyline.

"Our plans aim to contribute to the future success of Docklands and London. We look forward to hearing the views of the local people."

The exhibition dates are on July 3, from 4pm to 8pm, July 4 from 4pm to 7pm and on July 5 from 10am to 2pm. They will all be held at the Marriott Hotel in West India Quay.

Residents can also view and comment on the plans via the project website, www.the-pride.co.uk, from July 1.

The development will mean the closure of the popular City Pride pub, built in the 1950s, with the land estimated to have cost £32 million to buy

their view of what?! Their view of the City Pride pub?! How exactly would a 2 story building be any different to a 60 story building when interacting with a view from a two story house?!

I would assume they are talking about people in 22 Marsh Wall in which case nobody will actually be living there for at least another year as its still U/C.

I wonder if these same people (whoever they are) realise to the NW of the site is the considerably sized RS & to the NE 1 Place & the hotel/resi newfoundland tower. Not forgetting a planning application for a 40ish storey resi tower should be made for the site to the East along Marsh Wall & not forgetting the site of Arrowhead Quay.

From The Wharf:

City Pride pub to become UK's tallest residential tower?

THE UK’S most expensive pub could soon become the country’s tallest residential tower.

Irish developer Glenkerrin has unveiled ambitious plans for a 63-storey building on the site of the City Pride pub in Westferry Road, which it acquired for a reported £32million this spring.

It may not appear to be the case from the view in the rendering released by Glenkerrin, but The Pride would be a significant presence on the Canary Wharf skyline.

At 209 metres high, it will be the UK’s tallest residential building, dwarfing the planned 172-metre Lumiere tower in Leeds and the Wharf’s own 152-metre Pan Peninsula apartments.

One Canada Square is Canary Wharf’s tallest tower at 244 metres, while the planned Riverside South development’s tallest tower will be approximately three metres shorter at 241metres.

The development, currently known as The Pride, will contain a 200-bedroom five-star hotel, 410 residential units ranging between one and three bedrooms as well as eight luxury penthouses.

As reported in The Wharf in April, the 1950s former dockers pub is set to disappear, but Glenkerrin has not yet set a date for its closure.

A design for the development (pictured right) has been cooked up by renowned architect Foster and Partners, who are also responsible for Canary Wharf tube station and the UK headquarters of HSBC in Canada Square, which was sold for a record £1.1billion last year.

Interested parties will be able to view and comment on the plans when a project website launches at www.the-pride.co.uk on Tuesday.

There will also be a series of public exhibitions at the Marriott Hotel in West India Quay.

The plans will be on display from 4pm to 8pm next Thursday, July 3, from 4pm to 7pm on Friday, July 4, and from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, July 5.

The 2,525 square metre site at 15 Westferry Road was snapped up by property firm Oracle Group last year, but it claimed it was “not in any rush” to cut short the pub’s lease. But Glenkerrin has indicated that if the public reaction is favourable, a planning application could be submitted to Tower Hamlets Council as early as the end of the year.
