ZAGREB - photos of lower town
Zagreb (Agram-Zagabria) - The Lower Town photo thread
Zagreb's Lower Town is famous for its cafes and taverns where people go to do their daily ritual of drinking coffee, chatting with a friend or going through the newspapers. The Lower Town is the main shopping area of the city, which means it is always crowded with people, especially on weekends. Then it becomes almost an obligation to go out for a walk and a coffee, to see and to be seen, almost as if Zagreb were a mediterranean city. Of course, the people are not the only reason why a visitor should go for a walk. Beautiful architecture, squares, streets, and parks are what is really worth discovering. The Streets Tell a Tale of History It is difficult to say what is most beautiful or most impressive in Zagreb, one of Europe's oldest cities and one of Europe's youngest capitals. Every visitor will find a favorite street park or square, each with its own view of city with a thousand equally attractive facets. Important dates in the life of the city include 1094 when the Zagreb diocese was founded (although there is evidence that the city is much older), 1242 when it was declared a free royal city, and 1557 when it was declared the capital of Croatia. Putting aside this nine hundred year tradition, behind the well-preserved walls of its romantic Upper Town, the city beats with the rhythm of daily hustle and bustle. Descending to the streets of the Lower Town, you will experience the youthful, though not young, city with its impressive Austro-Hungarian style. Did You Know ? When was Zagreb’s Lower City built and in what styles? At the base of the Upper City the Lower City was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century with squares, parks and buildings mostly in the historicism and secessionist style. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope all of you enjoy these photos An aerial of Josip Jelacic square : ![]() Josip Jelacic square : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jurisiceva street : ![]() Praska street : ![]() Krvavi most (The Bloody Bridge) : ![]() ![]() ![]() Tkalciceva street : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() construction in Tkalciceva : ![]() Central rail station - Glavni Kolodvor : ![]() ![]() ![]() Towards upper town (Radiceva street) : ![]() ...soon to be continued

Ilica is nice. I have always enjoyed my long strolls along this prominent retail strip.
I love this pic of the different trams rumbling up and down Ilica:

Hello, this looks like a beautiful city.
I hope to go there in July. Has anyone from Zagreb heard of Vanja Kalogjera who died recently? I believe he was quite well known. |
