I assume natural light is an optional extra then!

Well, it's a budget boutique hotel so you get what you pay for.

I'm warming to the design - especially with the way the signage wraps around the building. Be interesting to see how the black bricks work in an area that is predominantly red brick or stucco.

A quick spot of research brings up this. These are what the bricks will look like:

And some data for brick geeks: http://www.wienerberger.co.uk/servle...=wb_uk_home_en

I like the idea of something other than red brick or terra cotta, and it's nice to see such a brick chosen - something with a bit of character. I also thought the brickwork for Bloc's Rhubarb development in Digbeth was very good.

The architects office is 20 metres away at 3 Mary Street, B3 1UD.

The development site is former garage & petrol station

I think it's a great shame that the architect doesn't draw inspiration for the window design/style from the great buildings close by in the jewellery quarter.

A few buildings within 20 metres of the development site....

The design does have nice bricks, but the building dominates the street scene (in an overbearing way) on that side of the road. If it needs 4 floors to be viable, it could have a basement as many of the rooms don't have windows.

I'm not satisfied with a bland boring depressing look just becase the bricks are nice (and they are).

Exactly what is needed here in terms of use/scale, a bit dull pending proper renders

I love the Jewellery Quarter - shame it's close to some of the nastiest gangsta areas..

Still thios building looks good - not necessarily groundbreaking but tasteful. What is public transport like to this area?

Midland Metro passes through the area - two stops. Jewellery Quarter train station too which is connected to Snow Hill. Numerous bus services running along Newhall Street and such. Oh, and there's always the canal which passes through the south of area.

I like the simple shapes and brickwork, I'd rather it be understated and simple than fussy and contrived like that hideous post modern thing opposite.

Given this is called Bloc I assume it is nothing to do with Blok Developments, even though it shared architects and colour palette with Rhubard?

I probably assumed wrongly that it was the same developer (Blok Properties), however I'm sure someone can advise.

It does seem odd that two such similar schemes have similar names, perhaps there is some connection, does anyone know who the applicant for this is?

Well, the name of the applicant given is a Mr Robert Morgan, whom I can't find any affiliated propert companies for. Reading through the application, 'bloc' is the only name I can find for the developers.

I can't find a website for 'blok properties' either.

Blok Properties are Piers Harding and Martin Saxon, with a registered address in Stratford upon Avon, also I believe a Liverpool address. I am trying to find out a phone number.

Update from Engels on the Jewellery Quarter thread, suggesting that this one is underway!
