Which social class would you say you're from?
As title
^ Seems to be very difficult to define these days as what criteria do you use - wealth, attitudes, education, aspirations, values, or all? what if you change your job, or your parents chnage status, move house etc etc, but then again does it matter? and what purpose does classing people serve? So what do you all think??? |

Middle. Both parents trained as Architects, Paternal Grandfather Professor of economics, Maternal Grandfather Mayor of Harrogate. Went to Private school, grew up in Chiswick.
Not that you'd know it from meeting me. My closet poshness is a filthy secret ![]() To be fair though all 4 Grandparents were from humble backgrounds in Yorkshire and they and in turn my parents were all frugal, humble, and down-to-earth. My parents spent every penny they had on our education, there wasn't much left over so our holidays were without exception always in Yorkshire and we never ate out, had flash things, etc... |

I'm a real mix.
On my dads side he's done real, well at working his way down the family the classes. I have family on hs side who are most probably upper middle. My dad was brought up in a Mansion, was educated at one of Britains best public boarding schools, the family had servants, three cars and a chauffeur, gardner, cook, and a nanny. His dad was an electrical/mechanical engineer. The family lost their wealth in the war, but set up this and that company, did okay. We were brought up badly. We had a big house, a dad with a good job, but we didn't matter. We went to crap schools, were carers for my mum from the age of 6. We were the servants, the gardner, cook, and the nanny. We looked after ourselves, the house and my dad. When the weather was like this I was a stray kid with no place to go cos we weren't trusted with a key to the house - it was very cold back then just like it is now.My dad was angry, aggressive, violent and domestically/paternally useless. I guess I was brought up like a forgotten underclass. I guess on the surface people thought we were something we weren't. My mun was always ill, she spent her life in hospital so never went to school. I was told she couldn't read much - which might be why we as kids never had books. Her family came to the UK in 1953. Her dad died and the family struggled making a living in London in the ragg trade. When she got cancer nd found there was nothing could be done for her she didn't want to go back to hospital so she lived the rest of her life at home - with us. She was a very amazing lady. My inspiration. lol I guess she was hospital class! No one in her family ever went to uni or to good schools. My other half is normal good solid salt of the earth working class - he is the only member of his family who is educated beyond 0 level or who has a degree - but no one in his family have been to uni. But all were well loved and well cared for. We probably kind of ordinary upper working class in some ways lower and in some ways higher. We are a real mush.

My whole family is working class (extended family is probably about 150 ppl) Most have small houses, small car, rubbish jobs and more than there should be have had a brush with the law. Education ain't to good either. Could count easily on one hand how many have been to university - an Uncle in London, who prob has the best job out of all of us, a cousin who's a teacher and another who wants to do something hospitalish. Most retired ones in my family have managed to move abroad now: Australia, NZ, Greece, US, Canada and Spain. Becoming a tradition now lol Saying all that, I live a life where Im as happy as I could be, have pretty much everyting in need (realisically anyway) good food and a warm bed. My mum and dad have done all they could to make sure we don't end up like most of our family.

I'm middle class. I'm not at all wealthy, but went to public school, listen to Radio 4, read The Times and we didn't have a television when I was growing up.

Haha at the scouser option
I am meant to be middle class. I probably only one on my street that shop in primarks, go to the market, Aldis, Netto, Tesco etc... I'll stick to my Sun. I am a chav and a half. Everyone on my street are posh. They get cars I could only dream of, have their weekly food shopping at M and S... so posh. They read The Times, listen to radio 4 etc... That just my family including the whole street. Last edited by nosey; January 9th, 2010 at 12:42 PM. |

Aristoprat.
![]() And I'm lower middle class I think. Though, the move to Sutton Coldfield probably means I'm sliding slowly towards middle class.

I have read articles from the The Times. Even analysed them for coursework when I had to do a comparison between The Sun and The Times over a United/Liverpool match.

i agree with some of the comments on here re: class. Money is only part of the equation. It will move you up and down the middle class bands but wont take you into upper class. That is all about background and although its possible for a family to move into the category it takes at least two generations. I coudl never be upper class whatever I did. Neither could my son. But if I sent him to Eton and he wnet on to be very successful in life he could perhaps be upper middle class. Alas that would be the ceiling for him by virtue of his parents being bog standard middle class. But his children could potentiall be upper class if he gave them a priveleged environment, went to a top tier private school and were able to say 'daddy went to Eton' and he could at least say 'and grandad was an investment banker'.
Its a very strange thing class when you think about it. |

Working to middle class probably, somewhere in between.
Dad is a pilot for a major european airline. Mum doesn’t work because she chooses not to work – not forced. Think they've bought us up quite well - 2 boys, 1 girl. Have never been spoilt (apart from my sister) but we were always told to value money and save if we wanted to something. |
