SHANGHAI: King Cheese aka Plaque City aka Dice Game

It's been a minute or two since my last photo thread. Shit, I haven't done one since I got my new camera in July. What's the hold up, you say? I've been busy up in this city of glass, grim and glitter.

So my question to you is;

When are you coming to the city that pushes, shoves and shows love for $20?

First things first, let's get some pictures I took with my Nikon D200 out of the way

Out with the old, in with the new. All these shots are with my second wifey; the Nikon D3.

My hood; the Jing An District. Best area in Shanghai. Yup.

Rooftop pool party at the Marriott. A cross between some cool folks and some proper cockholes.

$28 for a jug of orange juice? F off!

What do you do when its 5 in the morning, you've got a camera and you're slightly inebriated? You walk on to a giant construction site of course.

This is a collection of pictures of the last night the infamous Tongren Rd. strip was open and funtioning.

Tongren Rd. runs right through the commercial heart of the Jing An district. A very small (like half a block) of this road was one of many red light streets that are scattered through out the city. What made this particular strip interesting was that it existed for a quite a long time surrounded by some of the most expensive real estate in Shanghai and China. On December 17th, this notorious half block was shut down in preparation for the Expo in 2010. There is also a billion dollar plus development going up right across the street (the site I went on at 5 in the morning). The new Kerry Center office complex and a Shangri-la hotel will open in two years.

While I don't normally frequent areas like these, I have to admit that I always had a soft spot for Tongren Rd. It was its long-lasting grittiness and sleaziness amongst the immediate generification that surrounded it that made the strip unique.

What better way to end this thread with pictures from Lujiazui. Whether you love it or hate it, it definitely likes the camera

Great shots

What's going on with the shelter? I hope they're not blowing it, that was always the best bet for affordable fun and drunkardness in SH

Sorry for not answering you sooner. I was just going through this thread and realized that I didn't get to your question.

The Shelter still gets some good acts, but their hip hop is dire these days. Same dudes playing the same beats (think Blackstar followed by the Beanuts followed by the Jackson 5). I was thrilled the first time I heard a set like that in SH, but not so much the eighteenth time.

The photos with the swimming pool were taken on the 11th floor of Tomorrow Square.
