The Signature Bridge across the river Yamuna is an eight lane bridge , four lanes each way, and has a harp shaped cable stay solution. The boomerang shaped pylon provides to a substantial extent the stress balance required for supporting the deck. It also contains elevators and stairs for reaching the top of the pylon, where a visitors gallery for obtaining a full view of Delhi is planned. The pylon shows two inclined legs rigidly connected to the deck which meet at half height. The upper single leg of the pylon contains the cable stay anchorages and the visitors gallery. The composite deck consists of 2 main girders and cross girders at 4.5 m spacing with 25 to 60 cm concrete slab on top.

Guys I have a question..
when I googled about the bridge, this is what I got >

Quote:
The Delhi Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for construction of the new Wazirabad bridge and its approaches over the Yamuna downstream from the existing bridge. This controversial bridge, which was first proposed in 1997 and is better known as “Signature Bridge”, would not be referred to as such in official records.Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting, Ms. Dikshit said the nod had been given for construction of the Wazirabad bridge under two packages -- approaches to the main bridge and the cable-stayed main bridge across river the Yamuna. Once commissioned, the bridge will bring about a positive change in traffic scenario on both sides of the Yamuna near Wazirabad, she said, adding that the much-needed bridge would become a reality and facilitate smooth flow of traffic from all sides and benefit commuters on Outer Ring Road and other colonies that have come up on both sides of the Yamuna around the old Wazirabad bridge.

The new bridge will have a main bridge, western approach, eastern approach, pedestrian sub-ways, road sign-boards, horticulture and landscaping works. It will be ensured that compensatory plantation is taken up to eliminate any loss to greenery. Care would be taken to undertake shifting of services without any interruption.

Though Ms. Dikshit did not give out the financial details of the project, whose cost was pegged at Rs.464 crore when it was first passed in February 2006 by the Delhi Cabinet, it is understood that the cost now stands at Rs.1,128 crore.
And this from The Hindu newspaper dated Feb 25, 2010. So its a reliable source. If this news is true, then I fail to understand how the pictures could be of the bridge. Is it that they had already started the constructions before they got the permit? Or is it just some other bridge that we are misunderstanding for the Wazirabad cable stayed bridge? Because, one thing is sure, that much construction simply cant take place in 20 days anywhere in this world.

Many controversies:

* Why such an expensive bridge when same effect can be achieved by an ordinary bridge.

* Increase in costs several times due to delays which further delayed it and made it even more controversial

* Gammon, the contractor, was in controversy after Delhi metro accident and this contract was being reviewed

* Opposition MP (MP of North-East District) wanted to have an ordinary bridge as this one will take a long time to complete and the current bridge is already choked beyond its capacity.

Very well put. This is the state of most controversial projects in India. Unfortunately most of them end up being scrapped for the same reasons.

All of IR updates in all threads are gone .

Name is "signature bridge - Delhi" or you can use "Wazirabad signature bridge - Delhi", though former is the more used one.

Now, a plan to clean up 1-km Yamuna stretch for tourists

Quote:
Though a clear and pollution-free Yamuna remains a distant dream for the city, there's now hope that a small stretch of the waterway will be cleaned up within a few years and made attractive enough for Delhiites to visit and enjoy their river again.

The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has come up with a novel proposal to clean up the stretch of river from the Wazirabad barrage to a kilometre downstream to help make the yet-to-be-built Signature bridge a tourist destination.

"Since tourists will not come to see the bridge if the river is dirty, we have decided to clean up this stretch. We plan to place a rubber barrage 1km downstream of the existing barrage. Just after the flood season, the barrage will be inflated and water will collect between the Wazirabad barrage and the rubber barrage. In time, this water will clean up naturally. Before the next floods, the rubber barrage will be deflated, the water let out and the process repeated after monsoon. The technology is being used in Andhra Pradesh,'' said a tourism department official.

There is also a plan to shift the mouth of the Najafgarh drain, which at present empties near Wazirabad barrage, about 600-700m downstream. "A pipeline will transport all drain water downstream,'' said a tourism department official.

The DTTDC also plans to use the water collected between the two barrages for water sports. "But this will be taken up in the second phase since at the moment our priority is to finish the Signature bridge,'' the official added.

The Signature bridge project was first proposed in 1997 and was originally slated to be completed before the Commonwealth Games. The government now hopes to finish the work by December 2013. But, as a result of the delay, the project cost has escalated to Rs 630 crore from the original estimates of Rs 460 crore.

Signature bridge and its two approach roads, together called the Wazirabad bridge project, will cost the government a total of Rs 1,131 crore. The project includes construction of a main cable-stayed bridge, the western and eastern approach roads, pedestrian subways, road signages, landscaping and horticulture work.

The bridge will have a bow-shaped pylon in the middle. Two high towers will be placed on the inner periphery of the carriageway to provide double support. The decks will be composite (steel and concrete) while the pylon will be of steel.

The project was recently revived by the Delhi government after years of indecision. "For a long time, the project did not get the go-ahead at several Cabinet meetings. Because of the delay, costs have escalated,'' said a senior government official.

The expenditure on the project has raised eyebrows. "Had the task of building the bridge been given to any other agency, they might have made a regular bridge. But since we were given the task, we decided to make the bridge a tourist attraction,'' said a DTTDC official.

Work on the approach roads is on. The bridge will connect NH-1 on the western bank of the Yamuna to the Khajuri Khas intersection on the eastern bank.
