Tumkur Road flyover hits a roadblock

Quote:
DNA : Daily News & Analysis; Mumbai, Apr 19, 2010 | by Khanna, Bosky

Motorists bearing the brunt of slow moving peak-hour traffic on Tumkur Road every day can expect no relief for two more months as work on the signal-free elevated corridor here and the axis road to Nelamangala has been delayed.

Officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said that the work hit a roadblock in the form of two 66kv electrical transmission lines falling along the route of the 4.5km-long four-lane elevated expressway.

"We had written to the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) to shift the lines, but did not receive any response from them for 15 days. After that we decided to take up the task ourselves. Under KPTCL's supervision, we are increasing the height of the towers above the transmission lines. Once this is done, the last mile connectivity between the two segments at Peenya will be completed and the road will be thrown open to the public," said a senior NHAI official on condition of anonymity.

Work on the elevated expressway on NH-4 was started in November 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs775.7 crore. Once completed, it will connect to a 15km long, six-lane axis control toll road leading to Nelamangala, giving commuters seamless connectivity along a four-lane main carriageway, three-lane service road and four-lane elevated expressway.

To enable motorists to take U-turns along this stretch, NHAI has provided an underpass for every two kilometres.

Urban planner Dr AS Kodandapani said that though land acquisition and other technical issues delayed the project, it would ease traffic flow. He said that parts of the city along that stretch were fast developing and the density of traffic was expected to rise by 30%. The NHAI had to be prepared.

The flyover would also ease the flow of traffic plying to and from Tumkur, Davangere, Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum and from the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

After the completion of this project, NHAI will take up the task of converting the four-lane Hebbal flyover to six-lane, and make NH-7, from Hebbal flyover to the international airport, eight-lane wide and signal-free.

Bikes barred

Bangalore-Nelamangala flyover will be ready next month, but no two-wheelers or autos on it

A 4.5km long flyover that cuts travel time down from an hour to 15 minutes should be a reason for all of Bangalore to celebrate — unless of course you’re one of the 25 lakh people in the city who use two-wheelers for your daily commute.
Two-wheelers will not be allowed to use the Bangalore-Nelamangala flyover, which will be ready in about a month, official sources said. This access-controlled road will be the second-longest elevated corridor in the city after the one connecting Bangalore to Electronics City on Hosur Road.

Flyover features
» The project includes the construction of a 4.5km flyover and an access-controlled highway with six mini-flyovers.

» The road connects Bangalore to two-thirds of Karnataka, and to cities like Pune and Mumbai.

» 1.2 lakh passenger car units (PCU) travel on this stretch each day.

» Of the 19.5km, 4.3 km will be a four-lane elevated highway, while the rest is a six-lane highway with two-lane service roads on either side.
Banning autos is must, they dont know lane discipline, i've never seen 2 autos going one behind another!
Hosur road flyover is 9km, that is double of this one.
Lotsa good news these days!

Tumkur Rd traffic blues to end

Quote:
Police To Take Up Junction Improvement

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: Another 15 days and plying on the Tumkur Road stretch from Yeshwantpur will become comparatively easier. At present, commuting on this road is no less than a nightmare.
Traffic police, who had earlier taken up junction improvement to decongest Hosur Road before inauguration of the elevated expressway, are trying to do the same on this stretch.
To ease vehicular movement, traffic police have identified four new junctions starting with Hesaraghatta Cross. “We are already working on improving the junction and will have two new signals in place of old ones, one on Hesaraghatta junction and another on Jalahalli Cross. We will also install two new signals, one in Peenya police station circle and another at SRS junction. In another 10 days, the road below the elevated expressway will open fully,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood.

TRUCKS TO BE DIVERTED

Police are also diverting heavy trucks going to Hosur Road via Nice Road. Soon, trucks plying towards Kolar in Dobbspet will also be diverted, thereby barring them from entering the city.
With nine BDA flyover projects under way on Outer Ring Road, trucks are being forced to take the service road, resulting in more collisions and parking problems.
“Due to various ongoing projects, trucks ply on service roads. This has resulted in more accidents. Since we cannot do anything till the flyovers become operational, we are diverting these vehicles at Dobbspet itself,” explained Sood.
The trucks will be diverted at Dobbspet via Doddaballapur, Devanahalli and Boodigere Cross to reach Kolar. Trucks comprise a major part of traffic on Tumkur Road towards Bangalore and by restricting their movement before city limits, traffic police hope to ease the flow even before the elevated expressway opens.

Bangalore-Nelamangala flyover

Quote:
A 4.5km long flyover that cuts travel time down from an hour to 15 minutes should be a reason for all of Bangalore to celebrate — unless of course you’re one of the 25 lakh people in the city who use two-wheelers for your daily commute.
Two-wheelers will not be allowed to use the Bangalore-Nelamangala flyover, which will be ready in about a month, official sources said. This access-controlled road will be the second-longest elevated corridor in the city after the one connecting Bangalore to Electronics City on Hosur Road.

National Highways Authority of India project director R K Gupta said such a proposal was under serious consideration.” In all probability, we will not allow two-wheelers on the elevated highway,” Gupta told Bangalore Mirror. “Bikes are free to use the roads below.” This ban from using the flyover comes as a big surprise as Bangalore has one of the highest number of two-wheelers – 24.16 lakh.

Also, sources confirmed that it wasn’t just two-wheelers that would be banned from using the flyover, but other “slow” vehicles. “We won’t allow two-wheelers, autos, and tractors to ply on the elevated road,” another official said. When asked to explain the logic behind the decision, he said, “They will be a hindrance to fast moving vehicles.”

Transport Department officials said that the four-lane road below the flyover and the service roads parallel to the highway should be enough for bikes and scooters.

This elevated stretch is set to cut the travel time from Goraguntepalya (on the Outer Ring Road) to Nelamangala down from one hour to just 15 minutes. Once it is completed, vehicles going out of Bangalore towards Tumkur, and then onwards to Pune and Mumbai, will no longer face a bottleneck. The Rs 776-crore flyover, being constructed by Navayuga constructions, is likely to be thrown open in August, but no date has been fixed yet. According to NHAI sources, the project is 98 per cent complete.

Traffic expert Prof M N Sreehari, however, believes the ban on two-wheelers is justified, as they tend to violate lane discipline. “Two-wheelers change lanes as they please, and that affects vehicles following them. This can be very dangerous for cars and big vehicles,” he said. Kishore Rangaraj, moderator of the Bangalore Royal Knights club, feels using poor road-sense as an excuse was not fair. “Today’s bikers are well-educated. Instead of banning them, they could monitor the flyover and fine those who are changing lanes.” Amrit Appaiah, founder of the Bangalore Java-Yezdi Club, agrees. “If they don’t allow cycles or mopeds, I can still understand. But why shouldnt they allow a good two-wheeler?”

While such bans have been in effect on other highways — notable the Delhi-Gurgaon and Mumbai-Pune Expressways — this will be a first for Bangalore.

1 Place | Entrance
The gateway (approach ramp) of the Tumkur Road elevated stretch is in the final stages. Upon completion, road users who wish for a non-stop journey towards Nelamanagala and beyond can take the approach ramp which promises them a signal-free journey of 20 km in less than 15 minutes.

2 Place | Toll gate
Road users from Bangalore have to stop at this point (near Kennametal factory) to pay a toll. Tentatively, a car has to pay Rs 15 to drive ahead. (Final rates will be announced just before the inauguration).

3 Place | Corridor
The six-lane highway between Kennametal Widia factory to Nelamangala will be a major relief for road users. Currently, travelling on this stretch is a hellish experience.

4 Place | Nelamangala

This is a crucial junction where Mangalore and Tumkur roads meet and is also notorious for traffic jams. The NHAI is constructing a six-lane flyover to provide a non-stop drive to those heading to Tumkur while those heading to Mangalore or Nelamangala have to drive below the flyover and take the turnings.

Bottleneck
The Silk Board junction is where the road to Electronics City runs into a bottleneck. Similarly, Goraguntepalya, where Tumkur Road intersects Ring Road, could turn into a bottleneck once the flyover is operational. The NHAI project concludes just before junction. As vehicles encounter two traffic signals here, it is likely to be a nightmare to negotiate. The flyover will have three closed circuit televisions (CCTVs) at three junctions. It will also have two electronics boards to display weather updates for the benefit of motorists entering Bangalore.

Quick facts
» Date of agreement: May 9, 2007
» Commencement date: Nov 2, 2007
» Projected completion date: Nov 2, 2009
» Revised date for completion: Aug 2010

Two-wheeler facts
According to RTO records, Bangalore has
» 5.27 lakh scooters
» 2.42 lakh mopeds
» 16.45 lakh motorbikes
The Nelamangala RTO has registered
» 2,512 scooters
» 4,594 mopeds
» 3,230 motorcycles

Flyover features
» The project includes the construction of a 4.5km flyover and an access-controlled highway with six mini-flyovers.

» The road connects Bangalore to two-thirds of Karnataka, and to cities like Pune and Mumbai.

» 1.2 lakh passenger car units (PCU) travel on this stretch each day.

» Of the 19.5km, 4.3 km will be a four-lane elevated highway, while the rest is a six-lane highway with two-lane service roads on either side.

Tumkur Rd expressway to be opened by mid-August

Shwetha S / DNA
Tuesday, July 13, 2010 9:03 IST

Bangalore: The Rs775.7-crore elevated expressway and access-controlled corridor on Tumkur Road are likely to be thrown open to vehicular traffic by mid-August, sources in the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said on Monday.
Quote:
It has been estimated that the expressway would daily benefit more than the estimated 1.2 lakh commuters, heading towards North Karnataka and farther to Pune and Mumbai.

“National Highway - 4 is likely to be inaugurated by August 15,” the NHAI source said. The 15km long, six-lane axis control toll road leading to Nelamangala will provide commuters seamless connectivity along a four-lane main carriageway, three-lane service road and four-lane elevated expressway.

Commuters, who use the expressway, would cover reach Nelamangala from the city in 15 minutes, compared to present one hour.

The NHAI said it had tentatively fixed the toll to be levied on motorists for using the elevated expressway. Claiming that the charge would be “cheaper” compared to those in other toll roads in the city, the source said the rates would be between Rs15 and Rs50.

“If you are driving a car along this stretch, you have to pay Rs15 toll for a distance 19.5 km, which narrows down to about 13 paise a kilometre. For a kilometre drive on the elevated expressway along Hosur Road, people are shelling out 33 paise a km. And for the NICE Ring Road, it is Rs2.50 a kilometre,” he said.

The NHAI official said the toll has been partially finalised. “Toll rates have been partially confirmed. Four-wheelers, which include cars and jeeps, have to pay Rs15. ‘L series’ vehicles (SUVs and MUVs) and minibuses will pay Rs25 and buses and trucks will pay Rs50,” he said.

The deputy commissioner of police (traffic-west), Panduranga H Rane, said the expressway would segregate the local traffic flow.
“The service roads provided are quite helpful. But until we see the usage of vehicles on the expressway, we cannot analyse the traffic movement. If it becomes like the Hosur Road expressway, then it will be of no use,” he said.

Several motorists have been avoiding the Hosur Road expressway. citing high toll rates.

Zoom to Nelamangala from Yeshwanthpur
August 2nd, 2010
DC Correspondent

Aug. 1: The 19.1 km long expressway which will allow motorists to drive without a stop from Yeshwanthpur to Nelamangala, will be opened for traffic in the next two weeks. If officials at the work site are to be believed, the six-lane expressway will be thrown open on August 15. Except for the two overbridges, where the final phase of work is on, the rest of the expressway is almost ready for traffic.
Quote:
The expressway will be a boon for those who do not need to stop at Jalahalli on their way to Tumkur and beyond. With most buses and other passenger vehicles left with no option but to stop at Jalahalli to pick passengers, it’s still uncertain which category of vehicles will pay the toll and use the expressway. On Sunday, a lane of the expressway was opened for traffic movement with several vehicle owners making the best of the opportunity to enjoy a ride on it. The work on two toll gates has been completed and sign boards are being erected at necessary points.

“We are confident about opening the expressway on Independence Day. For the first one month, toll will not be charged on any vehicle. The new road is expected to reduce the travel time between the city and Nelamangala. During peak hours, the travel time between Nelamangala and the city stretches close to 90 minutes due to traffic congestion,” said an official from the National Highway Authority of India.

The new expressway itself may not be enough to solve the problems on the ground, feel traffic experts. “There is an urgent need to create a bus bay at Jalahalli which could ease traffic movement on National Highway No. 4. With no bus bay available, all the buses moving to almost 22 districts of the state, not to mention city and private buses, have to stop on the highway itself along with city and other private buses. The expressway will benefit those who want to drive straight to Tumkur, but as far as traffic congestion in and around Peenya is concerned, it may not be the solution,” said a traffic expert.

The traffic police too are apprehensive about the traffic congestion likely to occur at certain points once the expressway is opened to traffic. Deputy commissioner of police, West, (traffic) P.H. Rane said the department is keeping a close watch on the traffic movement at Goraguntepalya junction. This is to make sure that vehicles moving from the expressway, do not impede regular traffic on the highway, the officer said.

◗ Total Length of thesix-lane expressway – 19.1km. It will be opened for traffic from August 15.
◗ Once opened the expressway aims to decongest Peenya and allow vehicles to reach Nelamangala faster than usual.
◗ Police are planning alteration in road engineering so that the traffic from the expressway does not hamper the traffic moving on regular lanes.

Elevated expressway on Tumkur Road gets finishing touch
TNN, Aug 16, 2010, 12.04am IST
Quote:
BANGALORE: The much-awaited stretch of Tumkur Road on NH-4 will be open to commuters finally. The Rs 720-crore elevated expressway and access-controlled corridor are likely to be thrown open to vehicular traffic by August-end.

The stretch of 19.5 km, combining the newly-constructed expressway and access-controlled road, will benefit an estimated 1.2 lakh commuters heading towards North Karnataka and further to Pune and Mumbai and other parts of North India every day.

According to NHAI officials, this stretch on NH-4 is likely to be inaugurated by August-end. The six-lane axis control toll road leading to Nelamangala will provide commuters seamless connectivity along a four-lane main carriageway, three-lane service road and four-lane elevated expressway. The stretch, which was a nightmare to traverse, will turn into a swift commute.

According to officials, commuters can reach Nelamangala from the city in 15 minutes, compared to one hour at present.

The toll rates will be notified soon. "The gazette notification about toll rates will be announced from Delhi,'' said an NHAI official. Asked if they are planning to prohibit two-wheelers on the stretch, he said they were initially thinking about it but it had not yet been decided. "We will decide it in consultation with the police,'' said the official.

Easy ride to Nelamangala may be delayed

Toll rates, ban on movement of two-wheelers yet to be finalised

Bangalore, August 17, DH News Service:

The inauguration of 19.5-km Yeshwanthpur-Nelamangala elevated toll way is likely to be delayed as the National Highway Authority of India is yet to finalise the dates.

“No decision has been taken on throwing open the stretch for public in the coming month,” Project Director R K Gupta told Deccan Herald on Tuesday.

He neither divulged the factors delaying the inauguration nor indicated a timeline. However, some sources in the Authority said the project should be completed in a week or two and opened by the end of this month.

Reduced travel time

The elevated expressway and access-controlled corridor on Tumkur Road (National Highway-4), will benefit over a lakh people travelling to North Karnataka. The travel time to Nelamangala from the City will come down to 15 minutes as against the present one-hour drive.

Gazette notification

Issues like toll rates and ban on movement of two-wheelers are said to be delaying the decision to throw open the Rs 720 crore project to public.

The rates for the six-lane axis control toll road leading to Nelamangala is yet to be decided. The gazette notification will be out soon, sources added.

Further, officials also pointed out that no final decision has been taken yet on banning two-wheelers on the stretch as mooted earlier.

The decision will be arrived at after consultation with police.

The elevated flyover starts near Gorugunte palya after the ring road signal, Near CMTI.

Guess this place, that's Peenya first stage. Earlier it was congested, now its free.

Was wondering, what this guy is doing there in between?

That's a paradise to see, its the Jalahalli Cross road. Was surprised to see the empty road. Earlier this road was jam packed.

Use of new generation equipments.. I think its one of the fastest completed roads in Bangalore as I remember. Day and Night work used to go on.

That's the road after Dasarahalli 8th mile junction. Completely free now.

End of the 4.5 KM elevated flyover near Parle factory. Its going to be a zip ride soon.

Tool booth near Parle factory.

There are several underpasses for crossing, all well done. Far better than the Magic blocks. Spacious and neatly built.

Sign boards are everywhere.

Entrance of NICE road while going from Bangalore city. For people staying in North Bangalore, its the best way to go to Mysore. A little more KMS, but worth taking it.

Special tool plaza for Extra wide and Exempted vehicles.

Small but cute looking bus stands built bu NHAI.

Looks like a fort..

There are exclusive subways for pedestrian crossings

Went till Nelmangala Check post and took a round back... the pics below are towards Bangalore City from Nelmangala Side

Tollgate in the middle will allow for more entry/exits... unlike hosur road
So it will be 3 years from Nov 2007 the project started.
This is useful esp for karnataka people, including mangalore(NH48)/shimoga(NH206)/hubli, chitradurga/hospet/bidapur NH13
