but the distance between the centers of the two cities is 130km. the outskirts may bring the distance down to 100km...that is still a very big gap!! but we can have something like a corridor which includes all the cities/towns between the 2 cities.

IT, BPOs bring in 14% of state GDP

BANGALORE: India’s IT and BPO industries together ($64 billion) account for 6% of the GDP, up from 1% a decade ago. In states where its presence is significant — like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Delhi — its share in state GDP is much higher, at 14%.

Revenues of these sectors will rise to $360-$375 billion by 2020, when it will account for 10% of Indian GDP, Nasscom president Som Mittal said on Wednesday. Even as the IT industry has attracted criticism from US legislators for taking away high-paying American jobs, Mittal pointed out the industry has helped US companies to save $25-$30 billion. "Our customers do not come to us for cost alone. We have multiplier effect that goes beyond costs."

Talking exclusively to TOI, he said that as per a Nasscom-Evalueserve survey, "IT has had transformative impact on Tier-1 cities and has positively impacted industries like hospitality, transportation and aviation.
There is immense scope to replicate this in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities."

The Nasscom boss expressed concern over the hike in fees for H1 and L1 visas saying it marks a departure from ‘rhetoric’ to one where there is clear discrimination and ‘legal immigrants are made to pay for illegal immigrants’.

Naxal's body spirited away

BANGALORE/CHIKMAGALUR: It was a secret operation throughout. A top Naxal woman leader, Hosagadde Prabha, was admitted to a city hospital with asthma and diabetes. On Wednesday, she died. When police got wind of her whereabouts, they rushed to the hospital. But her associates outsmarted police, got her body released and whisked it away in a gunny bag. This was an ‘encounter’ which police missed by 10 minutes.

The woman Naxal leader from Western Ghats, wife of naxal leader Bukkadibail Krishnamurthy, headed Naxal activities in Karnataka and was based around Kudremukh region. Sources told TOI that Prabha was suffering from asthma and was also highly diabetic. Recently, she developed gangrene due to an injury in the leg. Since the weather condition in the Western Ghats was very cold due to monsoon, her condition worsened.

BANGALORE August 21, 2010: Minister for Social Welfare Govind M Karjol in his maiden press conference here on Saturday has revealed some interesting facts about beggars at the beggars camp on Magadi Road in Bangalore.

According to him, a highest number of beggars in the camp are from Tamil Nadu. Of the 2300-odd inmates currently housed in the camp, more than 1800 belong to other states. There are 825 from Tamil Nadu, 625 from Andhra Pradesh, 125 each from Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, 62 each from Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The government will hold talks with states to send them back to their respective states, he said.

The Minister after visiting the beggars home on Magadi Road in the City, said the officials have been instructed to hold talks with officials of governments of other states to relocate beggars.

Mr. Karjol, who is also holding minor irrigation and planning portfolios, has been given the additional responsibility of Social Welfare by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Friday.

Hundreds of inmates of the camp deserted it yesterday and have returned to begging in several areas. Mr. Karjol directed the authorities here to ensure that those who fled the Relief Camp yesterday were brought back at the earliest.

Mr. Karjol has also ordered Deputy Commissioners to undertake visits to 13 such centres located in parts of the state and ensure that such tragedies did not recur. He said warden of the Beggars Relief Centre, against whom complaints be made would be removed.

He also directed authorities to construct 31 toilets and 18 bathrooms at the beggars home and construction work would start soon. Mr Karjol said three more doctors and 10 para medical staff would be deployed soon to provide medical aid to inmates. Besides supply of Cauvery water, quality food would be served to inmates, he said.

Four more inmates of the government-run Beggars Relief Centre here died since last night, taking the toll to 26 during the last four days.

Meanwhile, State Janata Dal (S) President H D Kumaraswamy, MP, demanded the resignation Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and held the CM responsible for the mysterious deaths of beggars.

Mr. Kumaraswamy called on Governor H R Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan and appealed to the Governor to seek a report from the government on beggars death at the Beggars Rehabilitation Centre on Magadi Road in the City.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Chief Minister was busy watching movie in Delhi and holding convention in Bellary and the death of the poor didnt bother the Government. He also said though Chief Minister had been to the rehabilitation centre eight months ago and directed the officials to improve infrastructure but nothing was done to change the situation, he said adding that the government has not taken any steps for improving the living conditions of beggars at the Centre.

They have come to meet their people. Why do you want to send them back? They will beg in their local languages (Tamil or Telugu) and get their alms.
