Ankara - The Turkish Capital

Recently I have been to Ankara and these are pics I have taken.

Let's start with Ulus. Ulus is a quarter which is located at the old center of the city. Ulus was once the heart of the young turkish capital but today it has lost it's old spirit. But there is still hope for this quarter a renovation and recreation project could change the whole quarter. Many of the old and important buildings are in good condition and few of them e.g. the first and second parliament buildings are even open for visitors.

Interesting start, I have to say I haven't seen many photos of this city. It's all been about Istanbul on the forum. Good to see something of the actual capital.

Indeed, I would like to visit Ankara once on a trip through Turjky, but I've read there's not much to see or do over there. Just one big and important museum and some recent mosques or so.
What's your opinion and impression about Ankara, DU999?

Btw, nice pictures!

You are right the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara is one of the most important museums in Turkey. I have taken pics there and I will show them later in this thread. Ankara has also historical important buildings for turkish politics such as the first and second parliament buildings which are open for visitors and of course "Anitkabir" the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Istanbul is bigger and has more culture but Ankara is definitely not borring. The population of the city is very young compared to european citys. Just imagine Ankara has more than 10 universitys!!!
These young people need of course entertainment. Ankara has everything for cultural life many theatres, malls, cafes etc. The only thing missing are foreign artists imo.

Also very important I was during Ramadan (month of fasting for muslims) there and the city was suprisingly tolerant. Some people were fasting others ate and drank (also alcohol).

Istanbul is bigger, wealthier and there is more culture in Istanbul because it has been the capital of some of the greatest empires like Byzantines and Ottomans. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think Ankara has ever been like a majorly important city so it doesn't have as many things to see or as grand architecture as Istanbul does.

Yes it is. But all turkish citys have one common problem, tourists spent somehow most of their time in borring quarters. You should be well imformed so you can have more fun cuz turkish people and their social life is interesting.
Imo tourists should spent more time in places where local people spent their time.

I had a couple of photos I had taken of the Ulus district but they all got lost when my previous laptop kicked the bucket

PS: Thanks for the thread DU, Ankara is usually a far too underrated city

PPS: If this is your first time in Ankara I can give you a couple of tips to take nice photos in, if you are still in Ankara that is
