Euro 270 million spent for construction of new hotel in Ashgabat

New luxury five-star hotel "Oguzkent" (Country of Oguz) was inaugurated in Ashgabat on October 15. As reported by Turkmen television, it is Central Asia's largest luxury hotel. The hotel is designed for the highest rank guests and major international forums.

"Hundreds of thousands of people gathered this morning at one of Ashgabat's central highways - the Prospect of Neutrality, where the majestic hotel was erected. The hotel's appearance inspires a sense of respectability, solidity and ceremonial grandeur," the state news agency TDH said.

As Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated at the opening ceremony, hotel "Oguzkent" should become an embodiment of the age-old hospitality of Turkmens, national spirit of peace-loving and good-neighborliness, our openness to the world and willingness to cooperate with all interested countries."

The new hotel has 299 rooms, 14 of them are president class apartments. There is a separate room for the President of Turkmenistan. The roof of the building is equipped with a helipad. The complex boasts a conference center, a fitness center, a spa, pools, free-standing 8-storey hotel and shopping gallery, barbecue-park, tennis courts and other facilities. The hotel worth Euro 270 million was built by French Bouygues company.

The hotel interiors are decorated with elements of oriental dcor and Turkmen carpets, paintings of Akhal-Teke horses, as well as bas-reliefs describing the history of Turkmens.

Turkmenistan to allocate US $ 10 million for development of science

The government of Turkmenistan will allocate funds in the amount of US $ 10 million with the view of strengthening the material-technical base of scientific research institutions of Turkmenistan. This was reported by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at a government meeting on October 14.

"Turkmenistan will fully fund all scientific research works that are of priority importance for the development of the national economy of the country," the Turkmen leader said. According to him, production and processing of rare chemical elements such as silicon, which is widely used in the manufacture of microcircuits, solar panels and construction materials are promising areas."

"Our country is well placed to efficiently use alternative energy sources, including solar energy," the president said. In addition, Turkmenistan, according to reputable astronomers of the world, has "very good natural conditions for observation of outer space."

The President also instructed Vice Premier Gurbanmyrat Mezilov to prepare a program of work to introduce scientific research and achievements of modern science in the national economy of Turkmenistan and submit it to the Government.

Qatar to help Turkmenistan to build sports and tourist facilities

Turkmen and Qatari experts will share their experience in constructing major sports facilities, including the Olympic facilities. The agreement to this effect was reached during a meeting between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the son of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Turkmen leader invited the sheikh to visit Turkmenistan and to "get acquainted with targeted work undertaken by Turkmenistan in this direction." He also stressed Turkmenistan's interest in learning the experience of Qatar in constructing tourist facilities, which can be used further development of Turkmenistan's national tourist zone "Avaza" on the Caspian coast.

IBRD allocates US $ 62 million for modernization of Turkmenbashi seaport

A Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Turkmenistan and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) for the modernization of the seaport of Turkmenbashi was signed in Ashgabat. The signing ceremony was attended by members of the Turkmen government and major banks, as well as the World Bank Country Director for Central Asia, Motoo Konishi, and representatives of this bank in Turkmenistan.

As the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat quoting the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the memorandum provides for the financing of the project for modernization of the international seaport of the city of Turkmenbashi, which would cost about US $ 62 million.

Following the signing ceremony, Moto Konishi expressed confidence that "the IBRD's international experience in the field of marine transportation and logistics will benefit Turkmenistan in the context of solving problems on taking this sphere to the level of international standards."

Center for restoration of archaeological finds opens in Dushak

A Research-Restoration Center opened at the archaeological base of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Abiverd" in Kaahka district of Akhal province. The center will accommodate specialists of Turkmenistan and France who will work together on the restoration of archaeological finds made in the ancient village of Ulug-Depe near Dushak.

The idea of establishing this center belongs to the French archaeologist, Professor Olivier Leconte, who is now in his tenth year of excavations at this major archaeological monument in Kopetdag band of oases.

Among the finds discovered by the expedition are jewelry, stone and metal ware, thin ceramic pots with ornamental painting, miniature figurines depicting people and animals, as well as murals, stone mosaic panels dating from the II-I millennia BC.

After passing through the full restoration cycle, all findings will be handed over to museum of Turkmenistan.

Turkish contractor builds giant sports facility in Turkmenistan

Turkish construction company Polimeks has undersigned a deal with the Turkmenistan government to build a significant part of the biggest Olympics-standard facility in Central Asia.

The Turkish company, which started doing business in the country in 1995 with the construction of a $30,000 paving project, will undertake construction of $2 billion worth of a $5 billion project.

The Ashgabat Olympic Complex, which is scheduled to be built on an area of 150,000 square meters, will host the 2017 Asia Olympics.

The project is a stepping stone both for Turkmenistan and Polimeks, said Erol Tabanca, chairman of the company.

“This will be the biggest sports complex in Asia. Turkmenistan President (Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow) considers this project very important,” he said.

Speaking at the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony Sunday, President Berdimuhamedow said Turkmenistan is aiming to nurture its international caliber sportspeople.

There is a great potential for business in Turkmenistan, Tabanca said. “Up until now we have undersigned 99 projects, 78 of which have been finalized while construction continues on 21 others.”

Today, Polimeks has topped a capacity of $5 billion, the chairman said.

The company has built hospitals, museums, public buildings and monuments, he said. “The common culture between the two countries, common religion and language has helped develop a relation of trust,” Tabanca said, adding that, of Turkish companies, Polimeks has the highest revenue in the country. “We provide jobs for 20,000 people,” Tabanca said.

The first phase of the project being handled by the Turkish firm is to be completed by 2014, while the completion date for the entire project is 2016.

The project includes construction of a 10,000 capacity skating facility, along with several swimming pools, tennis courts, cycling racetracks, schools and accommodation facilities. The capacity of the football stadium will also be increased to 60,000, up from 33,000.

Turkish president studies Avaza resort

Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who arrived in Turkmenbashi on Nov. 11, lauded the concept behind the development of the Avaza resort on the picturesque Caspian coast, the Altin Asir national television channel reported today.

During the concept's presentation, Gul studied the system of tax benefits provided at the resort for foreign investors.

"The presentation was of great interest to the Turkish leader, who appreciated the on-going large-scale project, stressing its undoubted success and exceptional promise," the source reported.

Gul was presented with a draft of the next stage of the Avaza resort's construction, including a palace of congresses, luxury hotels, a trade fair, and cultural and entertainment centers.

Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov personally familiarized his Turkish counterpart with a number of attractions at the resort, including a new park ensemble consisting of a seawater fountain, a coastal complex of fountains and an amphitheater.

Tourism holds special place in Turkmenistan's strategic plans. Presently, the total cost of its facilities constructed on the Caspian coast have reached over $1.5 billion.

Today a new airport, highways, gas turbine electric power station, water desalinating and water treatment facilities are all being constructed. Several sanatorium-resort facilities will be put into operation in October. Aqua parks, yacht clubs, an artificial navigable river and other facilities will be constructed within the second part of the resort's construction. Other projects include the construction of an oceanarium, a sheltered skiing resort, a cycle track and a casino city.

The Great Silk Road passed via Turkmenistan, which is rich in folk culture, various natural landscapes, and unique archaeological sites, including areas on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List such as Ancient Nisa, Merv, and Kunyaurgench.

The Turkmen coast and the southern limits of Kopetdag is a land of healing, natural health clinics. Archman, Bayramali Mollakara, Yilisuv and other natural sources are known for their healing properties and are comparable with the best resorts in the world, the Turkmen government reported. Additionally, the Kopetdag Mountains, the Karakum Desert, and the coast of Amu Darya are a perfect fit for ecological tourism lovers.

Turkmen-Japanese fertiliser plant construction begins

MARY, Turkmenistan – Construction of a US $1billion Turkmen-Japanese fertiliser plant has begun, Central Asia Online has learned.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov participated in laying the cornerstone of the factory January 25. A consortium of Japan's Kawasaki and Sojitz Corporation, in co-operation with Turkmenkhimiya and Turkey's Renaissance Holding, is building the factory to annually produce 640,000 tonnes of carbamide and 400,000 tonnes of ammonia fertiliser. Completion is expected in 2014.

Half of the factory's output will be exported, Berdymukhamedov said. The factory is also meant to serve Turkmen cotton growers.

A 13-year loan by the Japan Bank for International Co-operation is financing much of the project.

Turkmenistan unveils 200-metre constitution monument

ASHGABAT: Turkmenistan, whose former leader built statues to himself and named days of the week after family members, has a new soaring monument adorning the capital: a 185-metre pillar to the constitution.

Riddled with symbolism, the 64-million dollar obelisk’s height fits the 18th day of the fifth month of 1992 on which the ex-Soviet nation’s constitution was adopted.

In Turkmenistan, modern media and totalitarianism’s towering love affair



Editor’s note: A 137 million euro television tower is set to be inaugurated in October in Ashgabat. The facility shall be incredibly state of the art — and totally hypocritical. neweurasia’s Emerson reports. “Besides the fact that it’s basically an enormous hypno-ray beaming out propaganda, who knows what technical abuses can be done with it?” he writes, “This tower is practically a dictatorship’s gift to more extensively monitor and pry into the private electronic communications of the Turkmenistani population.”

A lucrative new television tower is set to be inaugurated in October in Ashgabat. It has cost almost 137 million Euros but it appears to have been well worth the investment. Consider: the Turkish construction company Polimeks, which has been responsible for several projects in the capital, boasts that it shall stand at 211m atop the Gindivar foothill of the Kopetdag range and shall be state of the art:

The tower has viewing terraces, a restaurant, a VIP lounge and a revolving restaurant of 100 people capacity. There are 4 large TV studios and 2 small TV studios, 140 editing labs and 5 broadcasting studios. There are rooms, offices for technical staff, exhibition and conference halls, a child entertainment center, as well as teleradio broadcasting, satellite and radio communication and rooms for technical equipment of the Meteorology Department. TV broadcasting and communication antennas will be installed at the top of the tower. An underground parking structure with 189 car capacity, storage rooms for decorations, electrical rooms and other maintenance rooms will also be included in the project.

Much of the technology has been supplied by the German company Rohde & Schwarz. Back on 23 July, 2010, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) quoted* a commentator in Ashgabat that the government was “spending millions of dollars on improving the way television works, staff are on high salaries by local standards, enjoy good working conditions- high-end equipment, and separate studios and rooms.”

This is an incredibly rich media outlet, and moreover, it’s intended to be the most distinguishing landmark of Turkmenistan. Yet it is for a country that has neither democracy nor a diverse and independent media.

Turkmenistan - Ashgabat and Minsk to enhance cooperation in construction industry

A high-level delegation of the Republic of Belarus headed by Minister of Architecture and Construction Anatoly Nichkasov paid a working visit to Turkmenistan. According to the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH), the delegation included the heads and specialists of leading enterprises and institutions of the friendly country.

Turkmenistan appoints Caspian Avaza resort project supervisor

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov appoints the current Deputy Chairman of the Avaza National Tourist Zone Committee, Emir Patjanov, as acting chairman of the committee.

The former head Taymammed Shiraliyev was dismissed due his inability to "cope with the assigned duties."

Berdimuhammadov has recently "made some remarks on the prepared projects for the further development of the international seaside resort on the Caspian coast and instructed that they be improved ".

Turkey Prepares Ashgabat’s Energy Supply Project

The Turkish firm Calik Holding has prepared a project to provide the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat with stable and reliable electric power and to modernise the country's energy system, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported today.

Implementation of this ambitious project which for decades will guarantee a reliable and uninterrupted supply of electricity to the rapidly developing capital is to take five years and will be implemented in three phases.

Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan interested in discussing joint projects

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has received Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Elchin Efendiyev, Turkmen TV reported on Thursday.

Efendiyev arrived in Ashgabat at the head of a delegation to participate in the celebration of the international Novruz holiday, celebrated on March 21 in the Turkmen capital at the regional level.

Ongoing consultations on a regular basis and meetings between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan "directly contribute to the growth of trade and engaged discussion of new joint projects", said in the television report.
