Thanks for the updated photos. Columbus continues to move forward with some nice developments. Downtown and the Commons is really coming along and the Advanced Manufacturing Center is a nice addition to the higher education complex by the airport.

WOW!! The Commons looks so different now, its like having a new building. Love the changes and love all the new projects going on in Columbus. I think the ole hometown is doing pretty good. Thank you for posting the great pics!

600 jobs in Columbus with new Cummins headquarters expansion:

Cummins Inc. announced Friday that it will add 600 employees to work in an $18 million office building the diesel engine maker will construct in downtown Columbus, where it is headquartered.

The development is the third expansion in southern Indiana announced by Cummins in the past year. Once the new building is filled, in 2013, Cummins will employ nearly 3,000 workers in a two-block area of downtown Columbus, three times its local presence in 2008.

Cummins executives credited international growth for its expansion at home. In addition to engine sales, Cummins officials said overseas sales and service of power generators and engine components such as filters and turbochargers have been strong.

This section of the article talks about how the new building will fit into the downtown area - with first floor commercial uses. The 800 space parking garage will be able to be used by the public when it is not being used by Cummins employees. Here are a few paragraphs from the article:

"Cummins expects to break ground this month on the new facility at the corner of Jackson and Fourth streets, a block south of the headquarters building. The 130,000-square-foot building will connect to a similar-sized office building that Cummins moved into in 2009.

The ground floor of the new building, facing Fourth Street, will be converted into commercial space with plans for additional restaurants.

To provide parking for the new employees and the employees moving into the former First Financial property Cummins purchased earlier this year, the city of Columbus will build an 800-space parking garage along Jackson Street, between Sixth and Seventh streets, for use by Cummins employees during daytime working hours and for the community at other times.

The city also has agreed to provide $1 million to Cummins to use for the Community Education Coalition’s education improvement initiatives."

“Cummins continues to be a major economic driver in our community, and we remain committed to partnering with the company as it grows in southern Indiana,” Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong said in a prepared statement.

LHP to build new $5 million headquarters

"LHP Software plans to spend $5 million on a new Columbus headquarters building, creating at least 200 new high-paying jobs by 2014.

The three-story structure will contain 25,000 to 30,000 square feet and be in the Woodside North Industrial Park. It will house employees who currently work in LHP buildings in downtown Columbus and near the airport and will accommodate the software company’s continued growth.

Ryan Hou, LHP co-founder and chief executive officer, said he expects employment to grow from 210 employees today to about 460 by 2015. The new employees will earn average salaries of about $75,000 a year."

New downtown apartment complex planned

"Columbus, Ind. - A Columbus hotel developer plans to build a new downtown apartment complex on Washington Street east of the soon-to-be-built Cummins parking garage.

The project, by Sprague Co., is expected to cost about $4.5 million and offer about 40 one- and two-bedroom rental apartments that will cost between $900 and $1,200 per month."

Forbes names Columbus one of America's prettiest towns

"Forbes has named Columbus one of America’s 10 prettiest towns.

Columbus “is an unexpected municipal gem,” the magazine wrote, naming the south-central Indiana city in the same selection as Newport, R.I.; Key West, Fla.; and Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Forbes wrote that Columbus has “a dizzying selection of public buildings” from famous architects.

“Considering that it’s such a small town, it’s an amazing place to visit,” Don Wildman, host of Off Limits and Mysteries at the Museum on the Travel Channel told Forbes. “It’s an incredible architectural town, and the whole place has that kind of vibe to it.”

Yeah Columbus! Congrats. It was a very interesting and good looking place when I last visited it a few years ago -- and it seems like it is only continuing to get better. I'll have to get back down there and see all of the latest.

Toyota Material Handling moving HQ to Columbus

"COLUMBUS, Ind. — Toyota Material Handling USA will move its North American headquarters from Irvine, Calif., to Columbus.

The company, which makes forklifts in Woodside Industrial Park at its Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing plant, said the move would begin this fall and would be completed over several years.

Toyota Material Handling employs 72 in Irvine and 53 in Columbus. The Columbus production plant employs about 700."
